The stakes seems to be put more on the First Order than the 'good guys'. They were trying to rise up against the Republic and ensure their way of being can maintain and achieve dominance again. They had all to lose and all to gain.

Compare that to the Resistance, who, though was faced against an awesome super weapon felt like they were going through a routine squashing of a small upitty empire faction and felt like they were going through the motion (see Han's nod with the "how do we blow it up, there's always a way"). Rey seem to be able to handle everything perfectly so there wasn't really much at stakes by the end (at least for her personally). Those who lost something was Finn (coma) Kylo (injured and defeated, also lost his father by his own hands), Leia/Chewbacca (Han) and the First Order (army devastated, super weapon destroyed).

The thing is the bad guys are the underdogs in this film, and they ended up looking more humane, compared to the dominant and seemingly perfect alignment of the 'good guys'.
