I liked this movie. In my opinion the story was about how people are affected psychologically by living in slavery.

The only really bad part was Brad Pitt. It felt a bit boring that it was him in particular just dancing in out of nowhere and saving the protagonist.

Story's fine. It was the casting that bothered me. Can't really explain why but it somehow felt wrong to have this super-well-known actor show up as the perfect gentleman. I instantly knew when I saw it: "allright, Brad's here, everything will be OK now".

I took that as the point. Eastwood's gotten loopier over the years, sure. But Look at Pale Ride from 30 years ago, it's the same sort of plot setup. The American Hero meta-narrative is failing but at the same time that's the idea that's holding us altogether for Eastwood.
