Whether he actually did it or not doesn't matter, the film was about Batman not his victims and he believes that he did it
It matters more than anyone's interpretation
The film felt extremely unfinished, probably because they couldn't translate Ellis's commentary on Bateman's mental state in the last like 70 pages of the book.
He basically comes soul-crushingly close to feeling empathy but fucks it up at the last second. Movie doesn't show any of that. All we got was 'le crazy christian bale xD' and the 'DUDE NOTHING' monologue

Doesn't matter, the point is everyone around him stays indifferent towards his actions or is just like him so he is stuck in his own personal hell. Book points toward him making most of it up however
