And to answer OP it's shown that Craven is uncomfortably empathetic at times despite his quiet exterior, like the interrogation sequence where he's caressing the suspect's hand and holding it to his face. It's part of contrasting his personality with Jedburgh's who's all charm on the outside but a cold, dead husk on the inside.
