I've yet to see a black and white film more recent than the 1960's that has decent lighting.
YOU DON'T USE FUCKING SOFT LIGHT IN BLACK AND WHITE YOU PRETENTIOUS DIPSHITS. LEARN TO USE HARD LIGHT OR SHOOT FUCKING COLOR.

I saw it recently but someone on /tv/ ruined my experience of it. It was recommended to me as a surreal film, but it didn't turn out to be one at all. If I didn't go into it with these kinds of expectations I would have probably enjoyed it more.

I never thought about this before but I think you're on to something.
sweet smell of success
great shots of new york
Nykvist was a great photographer. Everything from he did with Bergman is breathtaking. I like the photography and cinematography of Tarr's films especially Satantango and Werckmeister Harmonies. Bresson, (mid-career) Renoir, Antonioni. The list goes on.
Pretty meh cinematography in all, but there are a few amazing shots.
