Why were the filmmakers insistent this guy's look could not be achieved with practical make up artists?

All I can think of is that they originally had something much more extreme in mind, and then at the last moment decided to go with Gollum

Thats what I think too. Serkis said something about it not being possible for him to be in makeup for this role, but clearly thats false.

I am envious of people who can watch stuff like this and not be instantly be pulled out of the movie. I'm not an edgy contrarian i do like to enjoy movies and i wish ny brain would not instantly bark at me "real people talking to a fucking cartoon"

Looks like shit.

He just looked like Gollum to me. The same kind of facial ticks and head movements. You'd think the guy who is typecast as THE motion capture actor would have found a little more range.
