>The problems of female characters being under-represented in geek merchandise is real. But when it’s a secondary character like Gamora or Black Widow, at least toy companies have an excuse. When the girl is not just the star of the movie, but of the whole franchise, that’s another story.
>That character, of course, is Rey, the main character of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and the latest problem has to do with Hasbro’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens Monopoly. In the game, the four playable characters are Luke Skywalker, Finn, Darth Vader and Kylo Ren. No Rey.
>Obviously, she should be in there instead of Finn. Not just because she’s a more important character, or a girl, but for reasons in the context of the movie as well. There are parallels with the other four characters, implicit or otherwise. I have no problem with Luke and Vader being in there if you want to pay tribute to the original trilogy but Finn over Rey seems crazy.
WHY DONT YOU MEN WANT WOMEN IN YOUR FILM MERCHANDISE
This is the legitimate ending of the article
>It’s 2016. There’s no reason for a character like Rey, the star of Star Wars, not to be part of every single piece of merchandise possible. Everyone—not just girls—wants toys featuring this amazing character.
It's 2016, we NEED a black character in Star Wars Monopoly.
On a serious note, though, I think they probably didn't include Rey for plot-related reasons. If she is indeed destined to turn to the Dark Side they wouldn't want to include her as a "blue" character on the Monopoly board. Finn is probably going to be the real Jedi hero long-term in the New Trilogy to it makes sense that he should be the blue guy.
Because boys don't want to play as girls, while girls don't care if they have to play as boys. If I was a kid I would whine, with good reason, if my parents buy me a Rey doll. I'm not a girl. Kylo or Finn, on the other hand, are fair game.
Having a woman protagonist for a children movie was a total mistake if they want to sell the toys.
Wait why does a Monopoly game only have four pieces? Doesn't that allow for at least eight players?
Also yeah this is pretty dumb at least from a marketing viewpoint because they're basically ignoring a core demographic. If they wanted to involve the chicks I'd have done the characters like this:
Luke, Leia, Rei and Finn for the good guys.
Vader, Kylo Ren,SHEEV and I guess Captain Phasma for the bad guys.
Didn't read your greentext because it's probably feminist clickbait, but it is bullshit if they didn't include Rey.
Now have some of Hasbro's latest Dungeons & Dragons game to be upset about.
I guess that makes it less of a big deal. Still doesn't make sense that Rey isnt included over Finn
I dont really care. Point being if OP wants to complain about sjw's there are far far better examples out there to pull from
Forget Rey, where's the real breakout character of 2015?
They're always the ones who cut deals with their friends.
"Tee-hee, Sarah, I'll lend you the money for that hotel if you agree not to charge me rent!"
"But girls, it says right here that you can't lend money to another player."
"Oh lighten up! It's not like this kind of strategy goes against the spirit of the game and makes it even longer. Now I hope I land on Free Parking, it means I get to collect all the tax money!"
>a real problem
A REAL PROBLEM IS HOMELESSNESS, HUNGER, DISEASE AND WAR, NOT SOME BITCH BEING LEFT OUT OF A FUCKING BORED GAME NOE ONE PLAYS REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
It makes more sense to include her once you see the film, but the trailers and pre-release media are all about baiting you into thinking Finn is the big hero character, not Rey. This is why she's never pictured with the lightsaber or anything, only Finn.
This is a super simplified version of Monopoly. It's something like you go around and buy a property, you get multiple properties in a single area you can buy an extra property (like a monopoly). Game ends when all properties are bought and whichever side (light side/Dark side) has the most wins. It's not a free-for-all, play until everyone else is bankrupt thing like normal.
I'd rather see her than Finn.
Not that I hate Finn but he's just some guy, Rey is a Force user.
This is an outrage and I’m sending Hasbro.TM a postal letter immediately. Why is it not IN WRITING, that I may play myse…character as dog trapped in a transgendered male body. Just because I want to be a male dog but in a body with breasts and a vagina I am discriminated against, by not only my dad, but now by Hasbro.TM.
Monopoly keeps becoming more stupid.
Remember when it was a decent simulation game that was both fun to play and a clever satire on Georgism?
>The problems of female characters being under-represented in geek merchandise is real.
Said someone who never had real problems.
And if it's supposed to be based on real medieval society, why don't the drow have seasonal affective disorder, vitamin D deficiency, and an increased risk of heart disease because of their lack of sunlight?
Make women buy more of the merchendise?
Why do I never hear of problem of men not being enough targeted in cosmopolitan magazine?
This is becoming a REAL problem guys.
In a lighter news, ISIL still wants to kill us, North Korea still wants to kill us, the economy will need decades to recover if ever, oh -- and we've polluted the planet into certain doom.
WHERE THE FUCK IS MY REY TOKEN FOR STAR WARS MONOPOLY?
>mfw I made my older sister cry by bankrupting her, and she never played Monopoly or Risk with me and my little bro ever again
I had actually forgotten about this, thanks for reminding me
they really hate strategy games and hardball
>a real problem
>a Star Wars monopoly set doesn't have any female characters
>Iran and Saudi Arabia are about to go to war with each other and this is a real problem
Why is west so gay?
In Asia you have tons of actions series with girls. And tons of merchandise with action girls.
Yet the supposedly progressive west is lagging behind.
He wasn't, a main character cant show up halfway through the movie
Are you talking about AotC or the Clone Wars series? He was prominent in AotC and was obviously the main character, and Clone Wars jumped around with its characters because it was a TV show
Luke was the main character
20 000 people die due to poverty every day. EVERY FUCKING DAY. Nobody cares. When 100 Americans die due to whatever reason TV cries for days.
In case you didn't notice we are the evil Empire.
the west doesn't have interesting female characters
the west doen't buy action figures and toys are for kids
the one that buy action figures usually buy japanese stuff because those are the good ones
>Oh fucken hell, not this defence already.
But it's 2016, anon. It's not... 2015 anymore.
>In Asia you have tons of actions series with girls. And tons of merchandise with action girls.
Because in "Asia" (read Japan) grown adults masturbate at the idea of fucking a carton 12 years old "girl".
1 hero vs. 1 villain from the OT
1 hero vs. 1 villain from the NT
The latter villain must be Kylo Ren. The hero must be Rey or Finn. They went with black over a woman, white feminists should be ashamed of themselves for kicking off about this.
Figmas always get this shit so you can do poses with them. Figures without moving parts don't get them.
>people actually buy figmas and nendos and not exclusively scales
I wonder how much Germain Lussier was paid for this article.
Oh fair enough.
Wouldn't it make more sense for them to just not have a base?
I guess you could argue then they won't stand up, but that's when you GET a base (plus it's a problem with almost any action figure ever).
I'd be annoyed if my monolopy game included Han but not Luke desu, this is kind of a similar situation. It's basically ignoring the actual main character over the irrelevant side character.
From what I've heard, Disney features Rey in their shit, while Hasbro doesn't.
It's weird how they think males are so very fragile that they can't have one girl in the group, when little girls play with Kens and princes/etc with no problem.
>an action figure isn't available in my board game
All those people die of poverty because they live in shit societies run by corrupt assholes, it has very little to do with the USA, and if the USA disappeared tomorrow there would be far more people starving because the USA gives a fuckton of aid to these countries.
Grow up, I know you're desperate to rebel but please.
One victim, 28 year old ‘Katja L’ spoke of her ordeal as she tried to make her way to the waiting room of Cologne railway station with two other girls and a boyfriend in the early hours of new year’s day. She told Der Express – one of the largest regional newspapers: “When we came out of the station, we were very surprised by the group that met us there”. She said the group was “exclusively young foreign men”. Keeping close to her friends, they pressed on:
“We then walked through this group of men. There was an alley through [the men] which we walked through. Suddenly I felt a hand on my buttocks, then on my breasts, in the end, I was groped everywhere. It was a nightmare. Although we shouted and beat them, the guys did not stop. I was desperate and think I was touched around 100 times in the 200 meters.
“Fortunately I wore a jacket and trousers. a skirt would probably have been torn away from me”.
yeah for 2016!
>there won't be a Fantasy Flight Games RPG set in the current timeline for years
>Hasbro/Wizards of the Coast probably lost the rights to miniatures or won't want to make/sell them
>Star Wars Miniatures Battles was 20 years ago
>Except she was. She's the new Luke and the story is basically about her.
This new movie was all about Finn and his struggles against space nazis.
Stop being so racist you cunt.
You were supposed to name a different movie you fucking nigger
The trilogy is about Anakin, but he was not the main protagonist of Episode 1. Hell, one could argue that since he turned to the dark side in Episode 3 that he wasn't the main protagonist, and instead was the main antagonist.
Isn’t she actually on screen more than any of those characters too? I only saw it once, but I think she has the most screen time of any individual character (unless you count BB-8).
Maybe and I mean really just maybe you could make an argument that the four characters they give you make sense if Finn was the potential Jedi in the movie, because then all the characters you could play would be Force users, but this is just sexist bullshit and I guarantee you there’s some cigar-chomping 50-something asshole executive who said to leave Rey out because no one will buy it if you have to play as a girl. Eew cooties.
>Hell, one could argue that since he turned to the dark side in Episode 3 that he wasn't the main protagonist, and instead was the main antagonist.
Now I see why the other guy stopped replying.
>Replacing the black man with a mary sue white girl
Ugh, could you like not? I cannot believe how RACIST you are being right now. It's about time blacks were represented in Monopoly
>if I bought the game
the thing is you and people who want that dull cunt in there won't buy the game. You'll just fucking bitch about it. I'd rather have at least 10 different characters before her or finn.
Probably because that guy was you and you're retarded. TPM is the only movie you can think of where the "main character" shows up halfway through. Anakin is not the main character in TPM, he is a major plot point and a major character but he is not the "main character"
it probably had to do with focus groups. More black male adolescents will probably play this version of monopoly over white female adolescents. And >>64490107 <- what this guy said. Feminists need to shut the fuck up, monopoly is a shitty game anyway
oy vey this is a really problematic post
I agree with you. It makes no fucking sense why theres finn.
THIS IS FUCKONG RIDICULOUS ON SOO MANY LEVELS. GIRLS MATTER. BLACK LIVES MATTER. LUKE SKYWALKER WAS THETR FOR LIKE 2 SECONDS AND NO REY IN THE MONOPOLY GAME??!?!?
Women are important for more reasons than men could ever fathom, realize or comprehend on any level. Without women there are no people and the patriarchy in this here country is so extreme and divisible that if you don't question the order of this superficial construct then you are the problem.
>Baldur's gate 2
>Go to Drow City
>If you are a woman they treat you good, if you're a man you get ordered around and at one point get told to strip so you can have sex
In terms of the story, it makes sense to have rey because, like luke and darth, they are their own enemies.
Then again, this is some plastic bullshit that I dont know why anyone gives a fuck about.
100 buckaroos says the author is totally OK with the poster on the left too since Rey is the main character.
ITS BECAUSE SHE IS NOT THE HERO OF THE STORY
SHE IS SECRETLY THE VILLAIN HAHAHAHAH
>Taking a black character out of a fucking board game
>Not including a woman in a fucking board game
>Including a white man in a fucking board game
Heads would universally explode all over tumblr land
There are a wealth of welfare net programs available to the needy on top of a ton of charity organizations here
You have to deliberately try to go completely homeless or to have fucked up your life somehow
>She wasn't in the set of toys
That's a bigger non issue than this, she still was a toy, just not in the set. It was most likely a marketing decision knowing that people would by her as a stand alone as well as the set.
>Not in Monopoly
That's odd but it's still a who fucking cares issue.
So most of this merchandise shit is finished with production months before the movie gets released. The fact that Rey is excluded from most of this means she was hamfisted in as the main protag way late, which gives reason to her lack of characterization. The movie felt like it should have focused on Finn a lot more than it did at release, and all this merchandise kind of shows that.
ITT: people trapped in /tv/ complaining about this not being a "real problem" when they probably do shit about actually real life problems and spend 24/7 on a board about Chinese cartoones.
Also, what a fucking retarded decision. Bitch's like Luke's missing daugther or some shit, she -is- the protagonist. Wtf is wrong with this people.
From that photo it looks like they chose a hero and a villain from the OT and from the TFA.
>Vader Luke from the OT
>Kylo Ren as the villian from TFA
>either Rey or Finn as the hero
Hasboro probably sat down and decided who they wanted to offend less, feminists or the BLM group, and they went with BLM
NOTICE in the POSTER how KYLO and REY both appear to be holding RED LIGHT SABERS
>The only people I know who still buy board games are women.
> I spent the last 4 hours reading and rereading the rule to Paths of Glory. I don't own the game, I don't plan to, and I have nobody to play with, but I'd absolutely be up for a game.
> Whenever I play at the local college market, there's always this pair of girls, who I suspect are a couple, but don't really care. Anyways, one of them is constantly on the other's back about every little mistake she ever makes or anything she does, to the point of near abuse. Somewhere between annoying and concerning.
> What's a good game for economists? I'm currently taking a course dealing with game theory and I'd love to pick up a game that incorporates that kind of thinking.
Just some examples, but I'm sure these people aren't women.
If they had chosen Rey instead of Finn, this article would be complaining that Finn is missing and that the game is white supremacist.
Notably, nobody seems to be complaining about the fact that it's Monopoly and therefore a pile of shit to begin with no matter what characters you put in it.
The only good Star Wars board game to come out of Hasbro in the last decade is the new Risk: Star Wars Edition, because it's not actually Risk at all: it's a Battle of Endor version of Star Wars: The Queen's Gambit.
Unfortunately, yes. Finn seems to only be there to fail at and run away from everything, because Rey can never be allowed to get in over her head in any situation and must always be the one to save the day in every scene. Because feminism.
This unfortunately means that he is the sassy cowardly black sidekick character that's been considered a shitty stereotype for decades, but apparently that's progressive now. I guess Lando, Panaka, and Mace Windu were just "acting white".
Finn has no apparent Force-sensitivity. The real reason is because of the JJ Abrams mystery box. Every trailer, every poster, everything up until release was hell-bent on implying Finn was the new Jedi, but in the movie Rey's the only one with any apparent strength in the Force and is ultimately the one destined to wield the saber. Finn's just holding it for her until she finally takes it up.
this will get changed just like everything 4e onwards, they try to change things but just look at 5e, it is essentially 3e with upgraded mechanics, the fluff was so hated they made new books to unfuck the universe.
The most popular thing is the drow and gender roles are the driving thing in their story and constant clash of men and women.
Wizards retired the miniatures line precisely because they lost the rights, yes.
Fantasy Flight seems hellbent on OT only for some bizarre reason, though they did add TFA X-Wings and TIEs to X-Wing.
My sister got this for Christmas and we just use micro machine X-Wings and TIEs for the tokens.
It's a lot more fun and makes sense that way since the board is made up of different planets
She is absent from the 12" hero figure line for some baffling reason, but she's present in every other line.
The only reason you won't find her at your local store is because they sell out SO FAST.
It doesn't matter though, because only chumps buy the 12" hero figures. That's way too big to play with. If actually like playing with your toys, the 3.75" is where it's at. If you like playing with very NICE toys, 6" Black Series.
I think we're all overlooking the bigger issue.
Star Wars Monopoly only comes with four figurines?
And they're just named characters?
I figure you'd get something like the equivalent of shoe and car and thimble.
Maybe at least a TIE Fighter, you know?
>oh fuck you only have 4 spots, 2 OT - 2 TFA
>include nigga to be all progressive and sheiit so SJWs can't say you only include whities in your game
>they complain about it because women and want it to be all white instead
You can never win.
>filed to: Holy Crap WTF
Nobody can take this seriously
The figures also look like total ass. Just look at them. They look like chinese knock offs and not quality products. They are probably even made out of plastic and not from steel like the classic ones.
>rey has to be in every single multi-pack, game, book ever
I havent owned star wars toys for like 20 years but I went crazy for them back then, in saying that the only characters I was actually interested in/had mummy and daddy buy me were Luke, Han, Sand people, Darth Vader, Palpetine, chewy and stormtroopers
I wouldn't have been interested in buying/playing with a fuckin girl doll as a child
How dare cunts have the choice of what they play with!
In saying that, how many boys are still haviung normal male childhoods? Considering this christmas all I saw was articles about not gender profiling toys.
>all I do is talk shit on /tv/ while at work
>Paid to shitpost
>feels good lad
Just how miserable and desperate do you have to be to fabricate a letter claiming it was written by an 8 year old for social media attention?
She doesn't belong in the new Risk: Star Wars Edition, because Risk: Star Wars Edition dramatizes the Battle of Endor.
Rey wasn't born yet.
>without her, THERE IS NO FORCE AWAKENS!
We should be so lucky.
Yeah, but I mean Anakin shows up in the middle of the second act of the damn movie.
Obi-Wan's the protagonist. Or he would be, if he wasn't absent for most of the second act.
As it stands, Qui-Gon's the closest we have, but his arc is limited and he doesn't even survive the movie anyway.
Sounds like it was just an oversight.
She's already the main character of the movie and is very popular. I highly doubt anyone involved in Star Wars, including Ridley herself, is worried about it.
Chances are this was a product manufactured by a third party assigned to make the game and not something Disney or anyone else had a direct hand in. I doubt JJ secretly wanted her not included because he's a misogynist, and expecting the upper echelons of Disney to concern themselves with every marketing piece in one of the largest marketing campaigns in human history (literally), is asinine.
All this marketing shit is done by third parties contracted to make it.
The game released back in September, on Force Friday.
At that time, all marketing for the movie was trying to suggest Finn would be the movie's Jedi-in-training and Rey would be something else. Nobody knew what.
Given that context, it makes sense that they would put in Finn instead of Rey, to align with JJ's stupid mystery box where he has to misdirect the audience just BECAUSE.
JJ probably didn't decide what figures were chosen for this game, but his misdirection campaign is probably part of why it's Finn and not Rey.
>children in Hasbro's focus groups didn't want to play with Rey
>Rey was not featured as Kylo Ren's adversary in TFA promotional material to the extent Finn was (Finn even has the lightsaber)
If Finn had been played by a generic white guy, then maybe Hasbro would've opted for Rey to better juxtapose her with Luke. But since JJ wanted an ugly nigger with Kleinfelter's, Finn was considered an easier pick for this dumb kiddy board game.
This new Monopoly Star Wars is not actually ordinary Monopoly. It's a 2-on-2 team game. Houses and hotels have been removed, as have deeds: you just place a token on the property to show who owns it. Once all properties are owned, the game is over and the team that owns the most properties wins. Going bankrupt means you give one of your properties to an opponent, otherwise you just keep going around the board.
It's much better than regular Monopoly by virtue of being about 30 minutes long. But since trading is basically non-existent, it's also much shallower than regular Monopoly.
Rey's not the main character though. Finn is.
Rey's the Jedi. That doesn't mean she's the main character. Finn was the character driving everything forward and getting into situations that moved our cast from point A to point B. Finn's the one who defected from the First Order. Finn's the one who met Poe Dameron and thus has a responsibility to get BB-8 to the Resistance base. Finn's the one who decided to go to the Starkiller Base to rescue Rey.
How is Rey the main character? Because Luke's lightsaber called to her and she's going to start her Jedi training in the next movie? The lightsaber isn't even introduced until 45 minutes into the movie.
>He thinks Leon the Professional was successful because people wanted to jerk off to a little girl
I actually do think this is the case and
It might be a legit complaint but the author is the one that is reaching with the whole "this is sexism!" bullshit. She's jumping the shark. It might just be that Finn is a far more popular character than Rey. Or at least, that's what the companies found when researching people that actually buy this stuff.
True. I mean it's a minor issue that nobody should actually care about, but if you do care about it then she's right. I wouldn't say Finn over Rey is misogyny, but why not put both in there? It's monopoly, the original had like 10 pieces.
>It's monopoly, the original had like 10 pieces.
It's actually not, it's a simplified 2-vs-2 team variant that takes about 30 minutes to play.
Four pieces is mandated by the nature of the design.
Boys do not want to play with girl toys. They don't give a shit if she was the star they will /invent/ a story where a Ninja Turtle is a jedi rather than play with a girl toy. It's like you niggas were never kids.
agree, it makes absolutely no sense why you wouldnt put the main character of the force awakens in a game called the force awakens. thats like making a lotr game without aragorn.
It's not called The Force Awakens.
It's just called Monopoly: Star Wars Edition.
It's a 2-vs-2 simplified team variant of Monopoly with one OT character and one TFA character per side.
It was released in September 2015 when the TFA misinformation campaign was still trying to paint Finn as the main character of the movie and the new Jedi. Selecting Rey would have gone against JJ Abrams's pointless mystery box.
In the context of the game's release, the character choice makes perfect sense. It makes no sense only now, months after the fact, because JJ's stupid fucking mystery box is a short-sighted pointless gimmick.
By the correct rules, landing on an unowned property forces someone to own it. If you can't or won't buy it, it goes to auction. It's often a good idea to let a property go to auction if you aren't certain you want it; this allows you to be strategic about your purchase, either possibly getting it for less or just not wasting money on a property you don't want. And of course if other players let a property go to auction, you might be able to pick up a property you want without ever landing on it.
Money never goes to free parking. Tax money goes to the bank. Free parking is just a blank space that does nothing. Bonuses for landing on free parking put too much money back into the game, delaying bankruptcy extensively.
Some players also make the stupid choice to double salary if you land right on Go. This is a terrible idea for the same reason as the free parking bonus.
Some players also make the mistake of allowing you to buy houses when the bank doesn't have any, using some other token to substitute. The limited supply is a deliberate game design element, allowing you to block other players' construction by forcing a housing shortage. Without the shortage, the game becomes too swingy; once a clear leader has emerged in the game, they need to be able to shut the other players out and bankrupt them quickly, or the game goes far too long.
Strategically speaking, hotels and four-house properties are almost never worth it. Three houses is the sweet spot for most properties, and would be even if you couldn't cockblock other players.
Taking all of this into account, a Monopoly game should not last significantly longer than one hour.
>Cousin wants Rey toys for Christmas
>Go to Target because I wanted to pick up an adapter anyway
>Walk through the SW section
>No Rey toys literally anywhere
>Go to Toys R Us down the street a bit
>Implying I'm willing to go anywhere beyond that even to make this story more compelling
I ended up having to Amazon one of those stupid Pop! things literally all I could find, Phasma is literally the only thing I can find and I'm pretty sure it's because most of the toys I saw were barely changed Stormtrooper molds with a cape
It's actually a surprisingly interesting variant.
There are no houses or hotels. The game is over when all properties are owned, and the team with the most properties wins. The game lasts around 30 minutes. Ownership is just marked with a token from your side -- there are no deeds.
Rent is paid to the bank, not to other players. Monopolies double rent costs for your opponents, but if you land on properties owned by your side, you have to pay half normal rent to the bank as well. If you go bankrupt and have to pay money, you have to give one of your team's properties to the other team, but you stay in the game.
Railroads have been replaced by hyperdrive spaces: advance to an unowned property between this hyperdrive space and the next.
Chance and Community chest cards have been replaced by light and dark Force cards, and the appropriate spaces replaced with light and dark Force card spaces. The utilities have also been replaced by Force card spaces. Each has two text boxes, one for the light players and one for the dark players. If you're light and you land on a light space, you draw a light card and put it in your hand. The light box on the card will show an effect you can activate at the appropriate time. If you're light and you land on a dark space, you draw a dark card and play it immediately, activating the effect in the light text box -- which can fuck you up. Of course, all of this is vice versa for the dark players.
Income tax has been replaced by Trade Federation tax, which is just 200 flat. Luxury Tax has been replaced with Bounty Hunter -- take one property from the opposing team.
It's very simple, but it's a hell of a lot better than regular Monopoly.
Do SJWs just ignore the fact that rey being the main protagonist was meant to be a twist and merchandise in development prior to the release of the movie specifically had to mislead people into thinking finn was the main character?
Hasbro's always done this shit. They've always wanted to keep girls out of boy toys, boys out of girls because they make more $$$ this way
Why do you think Teen Titans got canceled
Fuck off, "Der Express" is a shitty news magazin and the Cologne Central Station is full of Junkies and hobos. Everyone walking there at that time deserves whatever happened to them.
