Chances are this was a product manufactured by a third party assigned to make the game and not something Disney or anyone else had a direct hand in. I doubt JJ secretly wanted her not included because he's a misogynist, and expecting the upper echelons of Disney to concern themselves with every marketing piece in one of the largest marketing campaigns in human history (literally), is asinine.

At that time, all marketing for the movie was trying to suggest Finn would be the movie's Jedi-in-training and Rey would be something else. Nobody knew what.

This new Monopoly Star Wars is not actually ordinary Monopoly. It's a 2-on-2 team game. Houses and hotels have been removed, as have deeds: you just place a token on the property to show who owns it. Finn's the one who decided to go to the Starkiller Base to rescue Rey.

How is Rey the main character? Because Luke's lightsaber called to her and she's going to start her Jedi training in the next movie? The lightsaber isn't even introduced until 45 minutes into the movie.

It's a 2-vs-2 simplified team variant of Monopoly with one OT character and one TFA character per side.

It was released in September 2015 when the TFA misinformation campaign was still trying to paint Finn as the main character of the movie and the new Jedi. Selecting Rey would have gone against JJ Abrams's pointless mystery box.

By the correct rules, landing on an unowned property forces someone to own it. If you can't or won't buy it, it goes to auction. It's often a good idea to let a property go to auction if you aren't certain you want it; this allows you to be strategic about your purchase, either possibly getting it for less or just not wasting money on a property you don't want. And of course if other players let a property go to auction, you might be able to pick up a property you want without ever landing on it.

Money never goes to free parking. Tax money goes to the bank. Free parking is just a blank space that does nothing. Bonuses for landing on free parking put too much money back into the game, delaying bankruptcy extensively.

Some players also make the stupid choice to double salary if you land right on Go. This is a terrible idea for the same reason as the free parking bonus.

Some players also make the mistake of allowing you to buy houses when the bank doesn't have any, using some other token to substitute. The limited supply is a deliberate game design element, allowing you to block other players' construction by forcing a housing shortage. Without the shortage, the game becomes too swingy; once a clear leader has emerged in the game, they need to be able to shut the other players out and bankrupt them quickly, or the game goes far too long.

Strategically speaking, hotels and four-house properties are almost never worth it. Three houses is the sweet spot for most properties, and would be even if you couldn't cockblock other players.

Taking all of this into account, a Monopoly game should not last significantly longer than one hour.

There are no houses or hotels. The game is over when all properties are owned, and the team with the most properties wins. The game lasts around 30 minutes. Ownership is just marked with a token from your side -- there are no deeds.

Rent is paid to the bank, not to other players. Monopolies double rent costs for your opponents, but if you land on properties owned by your side, you have to pay half normal rent to the bank as well. If you go bankrupt and have to pay money, you have to give one of your team's properties to the other team, but you stay in the game.

Railroads have been replaced by hyperdrive spaces: advance to an unowned property between this hyperdrive space and the next.

Chance and Community chest cards have been replaced by light and dark Force cards, and the appropriate spaces replaced with light and dark Force card spaces. The utilities have also been replaced by Force card spaces. Each has two text boxes, one for the light players and one for the dark players. If you're light and you land on a light space, you draw a light card and put it in your hand. The light box on the card will show an effect you can activate at the appropriate time. If you're light and you land on a dark space, you draw a dark card and play it immediately, activating the effect in the light text box -- which can fuck you up. Of course, all of this is vice versa for the dark players.

Income tax has been replaced by Trade Federation tax, which is just 200 flat. Luxury Tax has been replaced with Bounty Hunter -- take one property from the opposing team.

It's very simple, but it's a hell of a lot better than regular Monopoly.
