That's the biggest problem. The quality of the movie rests on nostalgia-pandering through obvious OT references and story beats.

Sure, it's neat how Disney delivered an updated OT movie for all those who wanted that, but the whole thing feels like Abrams stole the entire plot and narrative from the suggestions box at SDCC. The movie possess no teeth, no dirt, no sense of adventure or daring.

It's not going to hold up as a decent, original, and especially not a ground-breaking movie in a year's time.

To an extent yes, but i still find that the story holds up and feels fun enough to be a good movie. Yes its just a new hope AGAIN, but it still had some great moments and was a super fun and enjoyable ride to go through. Not to mention JJ Actually put some heart and effort into the damn thing instead of going just full CG. It's not perfect, but this is what the franchise needs. A simple, easy, return to form. This wont fly at all for episode 8 though.

This. I don't hate it, and it's certainly better than the prequels (hell of a low bar to set, though), but it's shockingly unambitious. Abrams should have tried to beat the originals, not simply pay tribute to them. 7/10.

This. I avoided the hype train because i was 17 by the time phantom menace was released. Hype and unrealistic expectations ruin more movies for /tv/ than contrarianism and autism combined.

It was an ok movie. I'm surprised at how inoffensive it was and that JJ showed a lot of restraint (for him).
