But for an artists to end their career with loose ends in their art is tragic.

If there is an artist out there who makes serious art for themselves, then we don't know about them by definition, though we might discover them after they're dead. Famous artists, on the other hand, who have released stuff and are enjoying all of the fruit of it (money, admiration, accolades, etc.), have no right to turn around and tell their fans to fuck off... unless if they maybe want to immortalize themselves as massive fucking cunts.
