It would be like having Samurai who don't use swords or bows. Jedi are a brotherhood of coldblooded Janissaries who devote their lives to tracking down and slaughtering the enemies of the Republic wherever they are found. That's what was established in the OT. Yoda was a being of incredible inner power that trying to hit a guy with a stick detracts from his character.

Likewise, the emperor sneers at Luke's lightsaber and calls it a "Jedi Weapon." Vader had one because he's a former Jedi, so it makes sense, but when it's time for the emperor to do something he conjures lightning from his finger tips.

He and Yoda were opposite sides of the force. While the light side preserved yoda, and let him live to be as old as he was, while Sheev was corrupted and consumed by the darkside, so he looked like hammered shit.

Then the prequels happen, and shit all over that aspect.
