God, I hate Digital Painting and the aesthetic standards that dominate both video games and the film production of the day.
I miss the days of the more traditional illustration methods and the Airbrush, meant that your conceptual designer was more likely to have actual aesthetic talent to go with his skills, because it was harder to get things done which meant the artist needed more skill and training to get where he was at.

There's nothing inherently wrong with digital, it's just that snake oil salesmen like Feng Zhu and Maciej Kuciara have taught a generation of up-and-coming illustrators to take shortcuts, collage photos, rely on 3D as a crutch, etc right out the gate instead of learning the fundamentals THEN learning fancy tricks to speed up a workflow.

Really digital painting is just a tool. It's more about the changing aesthetic standards and what is considered fashionable these days versus decades ago. When you're pining for the old, unwieldy physical techniques of making art (which any actual artist who has tried both traditional and digital would say are just frustrating and slow) what you're really nostalgic for is the retro style of these old artists. Nothing wrong with that of course, I like that retro shit too. Sadly, a majority of people would just think it looks old and bad now.

Used to love Vader but honestly now, the more I look at his suit, the more I think it looks really stupid.

Nothing in his design really connotes evil, aside from the black and red. The helmet has elements that I like, namely the samurai and Nazi influences, but the face of the helmet just looks dumb.

Kylo Ren's mask/helmet really isn't much better either.

Thing is, the suit is awful at conveying that. I get that that's the entire point of it, but it leaves a bit too much to the imagination in that regard imo.
