I recently realized that pic related is my favorite movie. I don't watch much anime, much less than western stuff, but this thing was just amazing. I'm looking for some live-action movie that might be similar and possibly replace it, so I'm not such a weeb.
What I loved it for is the visual direction, the introspective character scenes and the mind-screwiness. It had a surreal aesthetic but not to the point that it made me detach myself from the movie completely like with Lynch films or Jodorowsky films (less so). Some of my other favorite films that come close to the level of how I like EoE would be Space Odyssey and Brazil. So yes, I'm asking for recommendations.

End of Evangelion is Hideaki Anno's multifaceted social commentary and deconstruction of the mecha genre. Only the highly educated can realize the multiple layers of complexity, and actually be able to understand and appreciate such a highly intelligent masterpiece. Much unlike western media:

Kubric made ending of 2001 a space odyssey incoherent and it just didn't make sense without reading the book. Everything other was style over substance. Like anything from Kubrick.
I will give the west some credit though: Bresson, Tarkovsky, Godard, and Bergman have come close. But still, none of their works have managed to achieve the level of profoundness, intelligence, and depth found in End of Evangelion.
Things on the scale of evangelion require a class to be explained, not some random bloke on the internet with limited time. If you fail to see this I don't know how to make it any simpler anymore. The japanese are truly amazing,man. I mean look at their amazing history and culture.They have the best literature in the history of the world. Lol no. I'd take any of the Rebuild movies over this one, and I'd take any Miyazaki over those. There is a difference between exploring a character's mind and just running around screaming "look how deep I am" like EoE and the last few episodes of the show did.
Did you watch the show? Because if you watch the movie immediately after the show then it really seems redundant. It's not that I dislike the way they explored the characters minds, it's that they seemed like they kept doing it even after they had gone over everything they needed to.
Donnie Darko was fun but not much more to me and it had a nice atmosphere. It was a 7/10 for me.
Persona, 7th seal and Solaris (though the book is a looot better) are some of my favorites.
My brother has been watching a lot of film lately and I'd like for him to experience EoE. The problem is that he didn't grow up with anime so it's more difficult for him to watch it. Is it possible to summarize the show leading up to EoE so he can just watch EoE on its own? I know this is blasphemous but I'd really like for him to see EoE. He thought The Holy Mountain was weird; I'd like for him to experience Japanese weird.

Thing is the series ending ignored the plot/lore which is in the end also part of the story and I don't think ignoring it completely is fair. Also, the movie made it clear that Shinji accepts his individuality and this world in the end. Which was important for a series with the main theme being confronting reality.
I don't think it was trying to be deep, that's just what was in the director's head. Like a lot of Japanese art, Eva is about depression and social problems. Anno just chose to frame it all within an insane universe full of freaky imagery.
The movie even kind of points this out at the end. When Shinji is having that dream sequence and you see all those flashes of fucked up child doodles, apparently those were real drawings made by young kids with mental problems. That's what the whole series is supposed to be.

I see where you're coming from, but I always prefer films that explore issues like that within the context of a story. The earlier episodes did that pretty well, but towards the end it became a lot more abstract from what was actually happening. That's why I like the Rebuild better, they still manage to explore the psyche of the characters while keeping it in the context of what's actually happening.

Yes, the show is great though. It'll get you hooked though. Just know that despite starting out somewhat light and action-focused in the beginning it will gradually change. But honestly the first parts were fun as well.

Well to be honest I didn't think the pacing was worse at all, although it had been a while since I've seen the original show. As for characters I'd also disagree. They're the same characters, only they don't lay down the psychoanalysis as thick, but they still do enough to make you understand how they think and why they are the way they are. The original show had a habit of going so far with its exploration of the characters that it got a little ridiculous.
I know this is gonna get a lot of flak for being a meme, but I always liked Wes Anderson's words on NGE when asked to recommend his favorite DVDs.

There was such an intense feeling for me while watching this of fear that I've never really felt from a movie before. It's silly but the way they built it up for everything to work out then just immediately shred it all up and you watch every action of the end right in front of your eyes was horrifying. Nothing went right and I can't think of other movies that do that. Like hell when he's pinned up and screaming I thought there was never a more appropriate reaction to an event than that.
It's okay for you to not like things, but for me the appeal isn't exactly the religous tones but how it's a force beyond anything of imagination. There was one angel that was a giant floating sphere containing an alternate universe that's just pure blackness. It's the same fear within me of watching the sun blow up in front of our eyes. knowing that it's all over and everythings coming to a close.

That scene where Misato goes looking for Shinji. She guns down several armed men with a pistol. She than finds Shinji about to be killed by a group of them and than she kills all, but one of them. She than puts the pistol up to him and echoes his words,

That scene among others always stuck with me.

I'll definitely check out Angel's Egg. I enjoyed The Holy Mountain as well so maybe I'll like it. He's watched Antichrist twice so I think he'll be able to handle just about anything I throw at him.
It's not that it's shocking or anything, but it's a very slow moving film with very little of what makes up a traditional narrative, it's more like a meditation.

So basically to me that film is more entry-level than star wars and much more than brazil or eva (which hardly anyone I know has seen, unless I recommended it to them). How is it childish? Because the characters are children? Because the show was originally aired at a time accessible to kids? That's rather silly. I'm interested in more personal themes like escapism and I'm definitely more interested in the future than in the past. If anything based on my post you could've suggested something like Solaris. Though I can say now that I didn't like it that much, though I loved the book.
Because the characters are archetypical and their emotions are depicted in a very unsubtle way. They are all children with very sad past, they explain all their feelings to the audience and the plot is about dumb robots fighting against aliens.

The robot vs. giant monster parts are pretty much just helping move the plot along (but in a way that, in itself, is part of the plot; if you watch it, you'll get it).

I watched it for the first time earlier this year and took quite a bit out of it. I've dealt with a lot of what Shinji dealt with and have been coping with horrible anxiety and depression for a couple years now. I also had a distant father who was more interested in his hobbies than me (bikes, cars, exercising). His explanation for his tireless exercise was because he wanted to be around for our family. Ironically, we wanted him around at that instant, not in 50 years. Obviously he did stuff like that because he enjoyed it; the health benefits were just a convenient excuse.
Anyway, my advice is to draw on your past experiences with depression, anxiety, or whatever else and use those memories to relate to the 2D drawings on the screen. After finishing it, I felt... less lonely knowing that someone else (Anno) has experienced similar depression, anxiety, and self-hatred.
I wouldn't call it glorious and beautiful. It's a good film if you want to watch something made by a nerd with anxiety issues.

Because there are many simple, personal films like that made by people who aren't nerds raised on anime and sci-fi.
EoE is a defining film for the generation of Japanese nerds, but why would someone who isn't into anime be so enthralled by it is a mystery to me.
I can understand adults who identify with Benjamin from The Graduate, but Shinji is just a kid, I had similar thoughts like him when I was 13 or 14.
I've only watched it once, but I took away it's about self-hate, how secure you with others and how that's affected by your past, and taking themes of social isolation and making them all spiritual. I didn't get the Christian symbolism though.
It's mostly Jewish. Kabbalah is cool I guess. Evangelion is a mix of what the author finds cool (giant robots, kabbalah, ancient aliens) a statement about his self-diagnosed depression and social anxiety.

Space Runaway Ideon (1980). Evangelion did the same concept of having a living entity disguised as a giant robot. Also has similar ending of everyone dieing and becoming ghosts.
I like the series but it's a little too monster of the week for me. I'll never understand how the gay angel was supposed to have any impact on the viewer if he's only around for one episode? Or somehow Toji survives EVA-01's chompers?
EoE is fantastic, yes, but the series leaves so much to be desired.
geyAngel mattered to me because I think he came in right when Shinji was at a major low point. He has just almost killed his friend and was about as alone, self-hating, and lost as his character had been at that point. The one thing that gave him a sense of purpose, happiness, satisfaction from his peers that he had felt neglacted by until piloting the Eva had just been perverted into something terrible.
Then, out of nowhere, came "gay angel" who genuinely made him feel happy again. Gave him one last desperate opportunity to connect with another human being and feel loved after being forsaken by everyone else, including himself.
Until the end, when he himself had to murder his last salvation, in a very similar fashion to the last time he hurt Toji.

It is devoid of its original JudeoChristian meaning. It does have meaning within the story of Shinji and his psychosexual development. It represents authority and higher power. The whole fighting angels or aliens sent from above / the moon / whatever is a part of it and all the crosses play a part of that.
I lucked out and took a Psych 101 course in high school reading Freud and Jung the semester before I saw Eva in an after school sci fi club.
Regardless of his knowledge of Jung + Freud, his characters' behaviour is consistent with practical psychology, like Asuka setting up very high standards for herself, and then becoming devastated when she fails to meet them. She's a narcissistic perfectionist due to her need for approval and attention.
The only thing that I like about the entire episode is the end, not because it's the end of something I don't like but because it is actually complicated. He was inches away from completing his objective and could have done so very easily, but he gives up because he wants to. That's the plot point I find most interesting.
I still wish they'd have cut out the Toji arc, had Shinji/EVA-01 flip out and nearly kill or kill someone else and give us more gay angel. I might like gay angel if I got to know gay angel better, you know?

You probably should since a good chunk of it is the conclusion to a series-worth of setups. Also, it helps to know what the characters are like and what they want, since a lot of the more symbolic stuff is very relevant to that.

EoE is more than just a decent send-off. It's actually the best parts of NGE (portrayal of anxiety and depression) fully realised. It's the ultimate film for confronting earth-shattering angst. For adolescents, mostly - but by some quirk that I can't decide is accident or genius it kind of appeals to the adult existential angst as well.
The show is an excessive shambles of anxiety and EoE is a ingeniously sculpted mass of that anxiety

I think you mean Adam. The moon was a product of Lilith crashing into earth. How or why Lilith was able to subdue Adam (who got here first) and/or his progeny is anyone's guess. At some point she seeded all cellular life on earth then crawled under Japan for an extended nap.
Adam's progeny is another story. You're right, they could chill on the moon if they wanted to. Chances are it would be after Second Impact though, so no dice on the Armstrong thing. Not to mention they pretty well were on task and SEELE was pretty aware of their numbered order. I would guess Adam's Dead Sea Scrolls contained an itemized list of his guftroop. Not sure tho.

It doesn't have to criticize it, it just has to have meaningful symbolism, which it doesn't. It's like allusions to Judeochristian images exist but don't serve a purpose at all. Magnolia for instance, isn't great or anything but the raining frogs actually tied up and cemented the central theme really well.

I dunno, Anon. Some of the things that are there are definetely thrown in there for shits and giggles, like the Tree of Life in Gendo's office or the Lance of Longinus, or the robots being called Evangelions, etc..
But crosses seem to be carrying some distinct symbolism in NGE: salvation, and the sacrifices made to acquire it(which, y'know, is the Christian meaning of the thing as well).
Whenever an Angel is destroyed, the explode into a laser cross: humanity has been saved from an angel attack. But all this saving ends up destroying all of Tokyo-3 and pretty much everyone's sanity and happiness. When Misato's father is dying in Second Impact and in his last moments puts her into that pod that preserves her life, he gives her that cross necklace. When Misato saves Shinji's life in EoE and dies for it, the last thing she does is give him that same cross necklace. When Third Impact takes place, EVA-01 becomes a cross, and all of humanity becomes LCL: it loses its individuality and becomes one.

Well, I perceive escapism as the principal theme of eva and ultimately it's the reason behind the characters behavior and actions in most cases. I also thought it relates to the fact that all the seemingly mystical beings: angels/adam/lilith turn out be just extraterrestrials but most importantly beings of flesh and bone. Seele which is responsible for most of the religious sounding names is just deluded by their own esoteric and mystical beliefs. In a sense yes, the angels are meaningless but not to the the in-world characters.
Also, concerning the crosses:
The whole kabbalistic terminology ties into the fact that the angels are related to the origins of life on earth. We have adam and lilith in the beginning, Evas come from Adam (Eve came from the rib of Adam). Humans come from lilith because just like lilith they disobeyed God while Adam, yet got the tree of knowledge instead. Angels on the other hand are servants of god and thus poses the tree of life etc..
This again is only because Seele connected the dots this way. In the evaverse the might be some illuminati like group with mystical origins, possible related to the essenes (hence the dead sea scrolls). But as I've said their faith in salvation turns out to be just another form of escapism.
Of course, I might be looking to much into this. But I am a bit of a lore-fag and Eva despite being rather a compact "setting" gives me lots of material.
