There's nothing wrong with masturbation, or even having a lot of sex if that's what you're into. Brandon was unable to connect emotionally to people, orgasms were just cold comfort, something to numb the fact that he was no capable of true intimacy.

The scene where his sister walks in on him masturbating is a powerful one. Normally that's not such a big deal, you know? People masturbate.

But he feels so much embarrassment and shame (lel) about it because of what that side of himself represents.

I agree with all of these

Pic related, not only do I think it's one of the most gripping thrillers of the decade so far (which is a testament given its runtime) but it's commentary on media and relationships is enough to make this a "movie of the generation" type film, much like TSN is for the social media era.

Maybe I'm biased because I just saw it earlier today and I can't stop thinking about it but I really liked it

Because there was nothing interesting about the story, the main characters held little depth or intrigue from the outset and little else was revealed from there, the narrative was a simple follow of a rise of a business empire but nothing in the nature of empires was explored, the antagonism of the lawsuit was unexciting not simply anticlimactic but lacking any climax at all and the social impact of Facebook or its importance was practically absent.

So if it wasn't about the characters, it wasn't about the empire, it wasn't about the conflict and it wasn't about the product itself what point did it have?
>>
People, watch "Neighbouring Sounds" and thank me later.
>>
>>49249020
You are definitely biased. This movie's pacing is utter garbage. During the first hour you can barely tell this is the same guy who directed Zodiac and Seven. Also by the time the movie actually gets exciting, with a premise in place and intense conflict between the main characters, they throw all logic out the window, jump forward 5 weeks and the movie ends. I can see where he was going, but sadly, Gone Girl ends up being a half-assed crime movie, half-assed social commentary, with the typical Fincher-style twists thrown here and there. Movie of the generation? Lol. Watch more movies/10.

Agreed. Social Network is basically Scarface or a similar kingpin film. I think Fincher consciously directed it that way. Zuckerburg climbs to the top but, at what expense? Every relationship he had in the film was destroyed.

And how does it end?? The kingpin hooked on his own supply trying to friend request Mara.

I suppose this is more subjective, but I really enjoyed seeing how Zuckerberg acted when more and more power was granted to him and how calculating he was in business decisions. He was nothing short of practical, it was very Charles Foster Kane-esque

>the narrative was a simple follow of a rise of a business empire but nothing in the nature of the empires was explored

>the antagonism of the lawsuit was unexciting not simply anticlimactic but lacking any climax at all

>tfw "could turn it into my ping pong room" scene
>tfw "if you were the inventors of facebook, you would've invented facebook" scene
>tfw "point zero three percent"
aside from those narrative beats, the anti-climactic feeling was surely intended because, as Delpy said, "in the scheme of things, it's a speeding ticket"

>the social impact of Facebook or its importance was practically absent

maybe because it was about the origins of facebook??? And it's importance/message about interconnectivity and online communication was touched on multiple times throughout the film's back half.
>>
Ming-Liang's Stray Dogs is top 5 for me.
>>
>>49250863
>nothing intriguing in that relationship
If you say so, sounds biased to me.

>where was this "social revolution" in the film I don't recall a whiff of it being looked at or even the film understanding whatever significance it had
It was about the impact of American culture's "FBGM YOLO GO BIG OR GO HOME" on the brilliant minds of the younger generation. For a guy like Zuckerberg who isn't very charismatic and doesn't know how to feel about people caring about him it can ruin the lives of people around him.
>>
WHY DOES THIS BOARD LOVE THE SOCIAL NETWORK SO MUCH
>>
>>49251052
>ruin the lives
should have said "ruin the relationships between him and the people around him"

If you want the truthful answer its because Reddit didn't like it and there's retards here who jump on every contrarian bandwagon.

This thread convinced me film is truly dead, like poetry painting and theatre its become an awful self serving community of narcissists who mistake the new for interesting, the incomprehensible for the profound, the cryptic for worthwhile and most sadly the arms race of abstraction for the search for truth

Its no wonder television has been steadily outproducing the medium in quality, I'm not at all unrelieved to say its been some time since I've bothered going to a cinema.
