>The only thing that doesn't make sense in the end is where the aliens came from, although the Doctor thinks it could have been a mass "time migration," when all the aliens traveled into the distant future together in search of food, it could have also been something else... (2 parter, maybe?)

Also just had a thought on this, on the way to the core they could be stalked by some monster, you don't get to see it through the episode, but the threat of it "shepards" them to the core.

At the point where the doctor realizes Clara isn't real, he realizes that the "monster", they thought was right behind them isn't there anymore, he realizes it never existed and was just shepherding them to the core

I had an idea a while back to both address Gallifrey and the regenerations. Moffat did okay I guess, but I'd always assumed that Gallifrey was in a time lock. One the Doctor put on. One that his name was probably the key for. So my thought was:

I had this idea before Day of the Doctor.
>Doctor arrives on a planet he believes is desolate and barren
>Immediately sees a huge orchard of strange looking trees, but the planet's distinctively shaped moon shows it's the same world

>The man lives alone on the world and tells The Doctor that he was exiled here

>Time Lords took the man's TARDIS and Time Lord powers away from him rendering him only as a human with immortal life who can't regenerate
>The Gardener doesn't know the Time War is over, doesn't know what happened to Gallifrey and the Time Lords
>Doctor has to tell the Gardener what he did and face up to his guilt
>Very character-centric plot with no monsters or threat and works solely as an episode to let the Doctor face his guilt
>Gardener chooses that an eternity tending plants on his own is better than sharing his life with the man who killed his family and civilisation

There would be no point.
The story works as the Doctor confessing to the Gardener that he genocided two species and civilisations in one day. It would start with the Doctor's elation that he's not the last of his species, but then The Gardener would talk about how his family were still on Gallifrey and how he hopes he can one day return to them.
And the Doctor would have to own up to killing them all.
But the Day of the Doctor made that impossible because the Doctor saved Gallifrey in the stasis cube.
So everything about the episode is pointless now.
