Because he's not stupid? It makes the job of killing Gregor much easier. He technically killed Gregor when he landed the first cut through his armor. The fight wasn't really for Tyrion, he didn't care about the trial, he was doing it for vengeance. So he made sure Gregor would die no matter what.

I feel bad that Oberyn got owned so hard after that scene where with Tyrion where Cersei showed them the "freak" baby, and Oberyn said that he didn't see a freak, just a small baby.

He was a cool guy even if his initial scenes were kind of annoying since they were all spent in a brothel.
