And in the end, he still gets painted as the bad guy, both by his ex, his sister, and his mother. His remorse is not that he gets fucked over by his ex wife, but that he wasn't successful in life. This is apparently normal for Japan.

Ryota had to spy/stalk her to figure out she was going out with him. When Ryota brings him up later on in the bedroom, she's hardly gloating, if anything the tone she uses signifies she's unsure about him herself.

Yes, maybe this scene is supposed to signify to the audience that there could still be hope for the marriage, but the fact remains she divorced him, she pulls all the strings both literal and emotional, and her indecisiveness, giving false hope to Ryota, amounts to sick toying on her part. Ultimately, nothing changes for the better for Ryota between the start and end of the film, besides the complete and final desolation of his marriage. He still has to pay child support, he's still bound to visiting dates in regards to seeing his son, and he's still stuck in a dead-end career. His ex wife chastises him for not being a father, says he's not cut out to be a family man, yet her very actions ruin his ability to be any of that. Instead of admitting that she had a problem with him, the blame shifts completely to Ryota and his deficiencies as a family man, or really, as a man. And Ryota's mother feels the same, his sister feels the same, even Ryota feels the same, and he's in the wrong with no way to redeem himself. The acceptance of the entire situation is what I find sick.

Anyway, pic related is the better film by the same director, with the same actor. Not as one sided.

It had a few filler episodes too many so surely there is room for improvement.
