Christopher Nolan has had the vision to choreograph various male pillars of contemporary British culture with practically unknown and aspiring young actors to retell the tale of the evacuation of Dunkirk. In doing this, Nolan’s film drives home the idea that this is a story of Britain as a community; Dunkirk is essentially a film made by Brits, for Brits. The cast is crucially important to understanding what I think Nolan has tried to do with this film. Mark Rylance is an acting veteran; he appears on screen in an almost mentor-like role to his younger and significantly less experienced (on debut) counterparts, Jack Lowden and Barry Keoghan. Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy and Kenneth Branagh are all British cinema heavyweights, cast (in my opinion) almost as a greatest hit’s of contemporary British film actors. Fionn Whitehead, an unknown young actor, plays an inexperienced soldier out of his depth alongside pop superstar and first-time actor, Harry Styles (who plays a slightly more experienced soldier also out of his depth). Dunkirk is a story of traditional England, and during this time of great political turmoil for Britain (where the ‘tea, cricket and green fields’ culture seems to be on it’s last legs), Nolan has pulled out all the stops by creating a film with his people, about his people.
