Is Universal's attempt at a cinematic universe in the form of 'Dark Universe' the most tragic attempt in film studio history?
I just watched Dracula Untold and thought it was a fun flick, essentially turning Dracula into a superhero, the ending was blatantly setting up a sequel, I checked google to see if anything was in the works only to find out it was canned in favour of The Mummy which tanked pretty hard. Is there really any possibility they will continue with another movie? Why would they try and push an extended universe so hard before seeing if the audience responds well to the first movie? I can't fathom how movie execs get paid top dollar yet fuck up this hard.

because it wasn't about the Mummy, it was about Tom Cruise being Tom Cruise. If they're trying to do the Shared Universe thing, the movies should be about their titular monsters with occasional crossovers. If they just want to do a series of movies about Tom Cruise battling monsters, that's not the same thing.
