He is a bad filmmaker, and those weren't even really flukes. Lucas had a ton of help with those movies, which is what made them good. The best example probably being getting two of his friends to completely re-write all of the dialogue in Star Wars a few weeks before shooting started. A lot of credit also needs to be given to Marcia, who was a good enough editor to make American Graffiti and Star Wars watchable after terrible first cuts.

Lucas has always had good ideas, but has been awful at executing them himself. Mostly because of his autism (probably literally, if yu listen to stories about his directing style and writing) and hatred of writing. If he actually managed to get the kind of art collective that was planned for Skywalker Ranch going, he might have ended up making more good movies.

By virtue of this film’s construction, it’s nearly impossible to gather what chronological order the events transpire in. Mimicking the passage of time in a dreamscape or memory. Using the songs (ranging from Del Shannon’s “Runaway” to Die Antwoord) to launch from memory to memory/emotional vantage points like the random firing of synapses. Malick’s introspective gaze regarding fame, wealth, and listlessness remind audiences to focus on the here and now, but it’s impossible to do so when every “here” moment lasts, at most, a minute.


Enjoyment of Song to Song is entirely dependent upon how much work one is willing to bring to it. One could read the proceedings with a Biblical lens, or another look at the trappings of the material world, and another on the ecstasy of love that can never truly last. With so little in the way of a firm narrative, one could bring anything into the film and be right. The third act cycling back in on itself could be read as 1) Malick’s inability to fight out of a feedback loop or 2) a comment on the soulless repetition of the music industry.

I only seem to watch netflix when i'm bored as fuck have have literally nothing else to do, which equals to me watching maby a few nights a week.
If my brother ever quit his subscription, I honestly don't think theres enough interesting stuff on there to make me subscribe with my own account.
Literally everything on netflix right now can be streamed for free somewhere else.
I guess the question boils down to convenience.

Are you comfortable with streaming free shit that might not be the best quality (or available) all the time? Or would you rather pay $10 a month to have the best streaming experience possible for some random shit you might not be interested in?
