People who went travelling in your early / mid twenties. Do you think, in hindsight, it would have been better to get on with your career? Do you have any regrets about not using that time to work?

Or was your travelling an asset - something that employers were impressed by? I've read that they're impressed by charity projects, but NOT just aimless holiday travelling. Perhaps that's wrong, but I read it on The Telegraph.

Many people choose to wait until they are old and tired to travel, because they believe that is normal. Travel when you can, and don't let yourself sacrifice the chance to see the world just because you think that you'll never get a good job if you do. When you're on your death bed, do you think your boss is going to congratulate you for your company loyalty? Do you think anyone is going to give a fuck about "gaps" in your employment records?
>>
>>1264704
So does that mean you went travelling when you were young and it didn't affect your employment prospects?
>>
>>1264697
Old person here. I did not do much traveling as a young person, did not have the budget and had few opportunities. I came to travel through a hobby that turned into a semi-0business, and I now travel to 3-4 countries other than my own in a given year to participate in festivals and events, plus trying to get in a "travel just for travel's sake" trip with family every year.

In my case, I don;t see that not traveling much when young did much to boost my career or my employment prospects, and from this end of the time scale I don;t see that it would have hurt me much to have spent some time traveling. If I had tried to do too much, I'd have gone broke, I guess, but I could have done some.

When I look at my kids, grown now, who have done at least some traveling since they were in their middle-school years, and ceetainly spent more time doing that than I did at their age, I don;t see where it has harmed their career paths much -- but, neither is pursuing a traditional 9 to 5 corporate career, so maybe that would be different if they were going that route.

At the end of the day, if you can afford to travel so much it messes up your employment prospects, maybe you don't need to worry about employment prospects all that much...? But to take some time every coup0ole of years to see a bit of the world, or to take one big chunk of time once to do the same -- that is not going to hurt you much career wise, and (if you are the type to benefit from travel, not everyone is) it will help you in other ways..

I've WWOOfed twice in the US.

The first time was at a farm in midstate NY. It was a pretty rundown farm and I was the only wwoofer and more or less the only one there aside from the lady who owned it who couldn't really do too much. I got to prepare my own food and lived in an old trailer house on the farm. I was able to get into town on bicycle and was expected 25-30 hours a week but logged my own hours and work. It was a pretty comfortable experience and everyone I met was nice and kind. I liked the lifestyle a lot, just reading and smoking and wandering around the property.

The second place I went was a ""farm"" in california which was just a stoner couple. They were pretty irresponsible with work materials (had me barefoot in clay that had nails in it), didn't really provide me any food, and had me up in an old trailer with no water or bathroom. It made me feel pretty awkward and uncomfortable so I got out of there after a few days.

More or less the second place I could've avoided by paying attention to the way they corresponded with me. The first place was very professional, had websites and materials and was pretty professional with regards to emails and information. The second was very casual, long times between responses and very short casual and uninformative emails.

My recommendation is to find well reviewed farms, ensure communications are clear and concise, and not to take chances. It's a good experience but there are some less than professional operations on there that you might want to avoid.

Interesting place to visit, but not to live. All of the civilized areas close to the city are only places that the super rich can afford.

Is there anything to do in Iceland besides nature stuff?

I don't have a problem with that if not because I love the outdoors, I'm just curious about what the locals do--I can't imagine the locals go out to stare at glaciers every weekend, majestic as they may be.

Do they have a viking museum or something?

Any good bars/clubs venues or resturants ? I'm almost afraid to ask this question because I know how expensive alcohol is there.

I'm gonna guess they go to local bars, watch Netflix at home, spend way too much time on Instagram, and occasionally post on the 4chinz. Just like most other places these days.

Hey, guys.
Going to Jamaica in a couple of weeks. Staying at a big all-inclusive in ocho rios with the family. Any must-dos while we're there? pointers/tips for not getting robbed, stabbed, and left in a dumpster?

>pointers/tips for not getting robbed, stabbed, and left in a dumpster?
Yes, don't go to Jamaica.
>>
>>1267796
ocho rios (and montego bay) is a shithole overrun my scammers and hustlers preying on cruise ship and all-inclusive tourists. that being said, you're unlikely to get murdered, as jamaica's astronomical murder rate is almost entirely attributable to gang war blood feuds, and i imagine no one will confuse you for jamaican gangsters. basically just ignore everyone who calls you racist because you won't buy their trinkets or let them braid your hair.

if it wan't already too late i'd tell you to go to the south coast where people live real lives and don't give two fucks about tourists. but it is too late, so enjoy being harassed nonstop.
>>
Myself and a friend went to Ochos Rios for 10 days at the ages of 18 and 19 back in 2013. When we went we stayed at the Mystic Ridge Resort. Very affordable, beautiful, helpful staff, and on the edge of town, yet only a 5 minute walk into the main shopping area. Ochos Rios is a great city to go to in Jamaica if you dont want to be trapped in a touristy feeling environment. I went to Ochos Rios to get down with the locals and boy I sure did! You're going to have to get used to the locals trying to sell you weed. It doesnt matter who you are, how old you are, who you're with, or your nationality. We were asked at least 10 to 20 times a day while walking around. #1 tip I can offer is for you to act like you've been there a while. Learn how to brush off the locals. Most of them only want to help you and earn a few dollars when they can. If you walk with confidence and ignore the locals they will assume you've been there a while and know whats up. Remember, Jamaica is a third world country. Many people live off of the five dollars a day they can get as tips from tourists. Second best tip I can offer is to make friends with a local soon off. Someone who can show you around. Many people would love to show you around the nooks and crannies of the city for the payment of a meal. I met a man named David who showed me the most beautiful private beaches and the best places to shop for wonderful handcrafted gifts day after day and never asked for more than a meal or a drink. Wonderful company. Yet another tip coming to mind, you must know that the price of EVERYTHING is negotiable is Jamaica. I saw taxi drivers negotiate the price of gas at a gas station. That being said, dont be afraid to bargain with all vendors! Prices are generally marked up for tourists because they know you will pay it. If a carved statue is marked at 2000 Jamaican dollars(~$20 US dollars), offer 1000JD($10 USD)!

I'm going to be taking a week off work in a couple months or so to do some traveling within the continental US. After doing some searches based off of some of my general interests, I've managed to narrow down my choices to either Las Vegas or Seattle.

I thought about Las Vegas because I tend to imagine it as a city unstuck in time, where you have these casinos whose best days were decades in the past and now exist in the present in this sort of faded glory. I like to gamble a bit and would like to see if the food/drink/atmosphere live up to the city's reputation. Otherwise it's physically close to some natural sights like the Grand Canyon (4 hours drive) and of course the desert, which would be interesting to see since I've never been to one before.

Seattle seems to be a lot nicer in general, but I don't have any interests to pursue in the city specifically apart from general sites (the Space Needle, I don't know what else). However it is an easy drive to either Portland to the south or Vancouver to the north. Portland has some hipster cred to it and I have only heard positive things about Vancouver so those would be nice diversions. Plus in Washington state there are the redwood forests and the Pacific Ocean, which I've been meaning to see.

I was hoping someone that had been to one or both places might have some more feedback on what each city has to offer. I'm actually leaning more toward Seattle if only for the additional travel opportunities, so any info on Portland or Vancouver would also be appreciated.

Also just to get this out of the way, I looked up what it would cost to get blown in an authorized Nevada brothel (legal) versus a Canadian escort (semi-legal) and Nevada cost more than twice as much, so that's another point in Seattle's favor.

desu you'll burn out on vegas if you stay more than 4 days. The strip in vegas is literally a weekend thing. I live in arizona and been to vegas a few times, you burn out and "everything is just a few hours away" is a tourist/marketing trap.

>grand canyon is JUST 4 hours away
Yeah and you are as well as 4 hours away from anything in the desert. You get bored of it after 1 hour and arizona has more to offer like flagstaff, sedona, nothing az, etc

>I thought about Las Vegas because I tend to imagine it as a city unstuck in time, where you have these casinos whose best days were decades in the past and now exist in the present in this sort of faded glory.

That's the old strip, and you can see everything in a day. If you don't drink or gamble enjoy being depressed after the 2nd day.

Went to seattle a few months back and had more fun things to do than I ever could think of in vegas. Also Vegas is hot as shit until October so hope you like 100+

Have you ever had to stay overnight at an airport?
33 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Many times
>>
>>1264084
At least a few times. More often I've dealt with six or seven-hour nighttime layovers, which sometimes seem too short to bother with an overpriced airport hotel/dayroom situation.

But I'm old and not as budget conscious as I once was, so I will usually opt to spend nine or ten hour nighttime layovers in an airport hotel rather than trying to crash out on a bench or floor at a boarding gate nowadays, unless it's not feasible to do so (being a transit passenger in a country for which I don't have a visa, if no airside hotels are available, is the most obvious example of this).

sleepinginairports.net should be in the sticky if it isn't already.
>>
Did it once and missed my fucking flight lol. I know a few people that do it and recommend it though. Just wear your most comfortable clothes and make a pillow with more clothes. It's unlikely that your things will get stolen because there are cameras and airport security everywhere.

This is an absurd question--bait, maybe?

For everybody who loves Texas there are as many people who hate it; same is true of New York, California, Massachusetts, Hawaii, and other frequently extolled/flamed states. Your mileage will vary depending on what you prioritize--climate, cost of living, jobs/industries, specific types of landscape, etc.

I have lived long-term (multiple years) in five quite distinct US States (in chronological order, Massachusetts, New York, North Carolina, Wisconsin, and California), and shorter-term (year or less) in Illinois and Florida. And I've visited nearly every state. I liked things about all of them.
>MA
I like the college towns and more rural parts of the state better than I like the cities, although I like greater Boston in small doses. Historic, highly educated, generally good quality of life. Mostly liberal, which I like, but you may not.
>NY
I liked NYC as a young man but wouldn't want to live there nowadays. Hudson Valley has some charm. Central NY/Finger Lakes region is beautiful in summer but chilly in winter.
>NC
Really cheap. Largely quite friendly. Lots going on in the Triangle region in the middle of the state, culturally, artistically, and jobswise. It is also the most liberal part of a somewhat conservative state, go figure. Some beautiful coast. Often too sticky for me in summer.
>WI
Brutal winters. Madison's a great college town. A little provincial but generally friendly. Very white.
>CA
My favorite state and the one I've called home for longest now. Incredibly diverse landscapes and people, which makes for pretty drives and good restaurants. Mostly mild climate, which works for me. Quite expensive in many areas, particularly in San Francisco, where I live. Despite people always saying otherwise, the job market and economy are both pretty strong in several sectors. Most attractive parts of the state to me are coastal cities, most of which approach batshit-crazy-liberal. I like that. You might not.
>>
>>1261720
Best: any state on the West coast, all of New England, Illinois (limited to Chicagoland), Texas (stick to major cities)

Worst: everything else.

>>1261735

All I ever hear about is Venice, Florence, and Rome. What else is there? Please recommend me Italian towns and villages, small towns, old towns, nice towns, etc.. What are some nice towns with pretty architecture and pretty scenery? Where could I kick back on vacation with a good beer? Where in Italy can I get that real European feel? What are some “hidden gems”?

And what about Corsica, Sardinia and Sicily? Are these worth going to for vacation if I only have two weeks in Italy? I have Googled these but would like to know from you guys who have actually been there.

Why? What happened?

So myself and a couple of friends want to go on a 'lads holiday' but not somewhere shit and mainstream like the greek islands or Ibiza, somewhere which is cool and interesting. We initially thought japan however the group decided against it since it is too 'boring'(main attractions are historic etc). Our budgets are somewhat flexible but preferably cheap since we are all 18.

What do you suggest /trv/?

I want to traver Europe on foot for a long period of time, and I don't plan on paying for rides or housing. Living like a homeless person. I have wanted this for a long time, but I don't know what things to watch out for and how to prepare.

It depends on what part of europe you want to visit, but i can tell you that being homeless here (northern holland) is no fun thing. It is cold, rains most days and the police will aproach you all the time

Its good to follow your dreams, but no need to risk you health

I do have money, but for example how hard do you think getting to stay in someones apartment is? People here are really nice, and I have hitchhiked before, sleeping in peoples houses, just by asking for a place to stay and helping with chores
