Pay top dollar to live with roommates in dilapidated 100 year old buildings.
Crazy homeless and street criminals, shit on the sidewalks.
Boring people, when I go out I wonder, "How did people this dumb get so much money?"

hey /trv/

I am heading to Colombia in about 2 weeks, probably by plane from Panama to Bogota. This was a pretty spontaneous decision and I haven't had a lot of time to research the country. I want to end up in Ecuador by bus later to have about a total of 1 month in Colombia.

Since the peace agreement it seems like Colombia will be safer than before, but I obviously still have concerns about safety because of its reputation. Mainly afraid of scopolamin and the ELN. anyone who has traveled there recently and can recommend a good route from bogota? which areas to avoid and which are a must see? i am mainly interested in nature and archeology.

I was in Guatemala for a month and it seemed fine outside of the city, so I would imagine Colombia wont give me too much trouble, just coming to /trv/ for some pointers and experiences from others who have already been there or even live there.

What do you want to hear? It's safe, millions of tourists go there.
>>
Did Colombia two years ago and in Mexico right now. In Latin America, I've also been to Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Ecuador.

Colombia isn't overly safe, per se, but your biggest risks come from pickpockets, muggers, and armed robbery, rather than scopalamine or paramilitary organisations.

I didn't have any problems while there, but I did meet a handful of people who'd been robbed (mostly while drunk or walking in places they shouldn't have been walking, like down Montserrate after sunset).

Was walking with some Colombians down an alleyway when two dudes with their hoods up came out from behind a corner and started fast-walking towards us. Colombians started running away and I did too.

About the worst that happened.

Maintain some situational awareness, don't take more money than you need with you at night, and use apps like Uber and EasyTaxi to get around past sunset, especially if you're a little tipsy.

All fairly typical stuff for the region.

There's always a chance you could get unlucky, but you cut your chances of becoming a victim in half by remembering where you are and not acting like a drunk dummy or clueless tourist.
>>
>>1269836
Ok sounds like the typical precautions then, I don't know why Colombia has such a bad reputation in my mind. I guess as always people latch on to the worst news and spread that as an excuse to never visit.

If anyone has some tips for beautiful nature spots and small comfy towns they recommend I would love to compare it with what I am currently researching to buildup a route to take.

I'm going to Europe for the first time in December, on a one way ticket to Amsterdam. I plan on spending a couple of weeks there, then going to Belgium where I'll meet my cousin before we go to his place in France. I have a bus ticket to Brugge.

if he asks for proof of onwards travel, will my bus ticket do? do they even ask for POT in the Netherlands? Is having a one way ticket a problem with customs?

Without POT you won't even be able to check in to get on your plane. Think on your feet.

I'm headed to Denver early August. I've been there only for a day in May (during that crazy hailstorm), so I didn't get to do much but sit in a hotel room and eat some edibles.

I've researched quite a bit and found some good restaurants, but I wanted to know if any of you have any suggestion on where to eat.

I'm especially interested in the best happy hours, since 4-7pm in Denver is 6-9pm where I live, so I'm happy spending a lot less for dinner and getting a lot more beer.

I'm definitely going to 5280 Burger bar for lunch if that helps.

I want to go to Greece in mid-late august.
I'm 23, going alone.
I have never traveled alone, I've only been out of America one time.
I want to see as much of it as possible and, of course as budget friendly as possible. Not afraid to rough it sometimes.

So question time and I'm sure you guys could help me w some insight:
Since I want to see a lot of the country, including islands.
Any tips on the best places to visit/ most recommended locations?
How to travel within the country? do they have trains or buses? (rough cost of this)
Should I maybe fly in to one side of Greece and fly out from another? If so, how can I do this? Can I determine where I want to leave when I get there, like an open-ended return deal?
If my itinerary isn't set in stone, how/ where should I sleep at night?

I'd like a nice mix of outdoors and seclusion there and also seeing some of the more prominent city-scape cultures. How long would you take for a trip like this?
Thanks so much for any advice.

go ask on reddit or lonely planet /trv/ is dead
>>
You're asking a lot of very general questions, /trv/ works better when you have some specific doubts about your trips, most of the things you asked could be answered by doing some research on google

Also Greece is suprisingly not very popular on these board, despite being one of the most beautiful country in europe i've never seen it mentioned that much. I guess it's considered too normie for the average /trv/ user, who prefer to spend his time in North Korea or hitchiking in some baltic town forgotten by God

I've been to greece several times when i was a kid, here are some advices

- Athens is nice but very chaotic, Thessaloniki is shit. Generally the big cities have not much to offer, better go to the islands and the small coastal towns
- dont know about buses or train, but i can tell you that in the balkans trains sucks (at least in my personal experience) and its better to rely onbuses, theyre cheaper and faster
- Cool places to visit: Crete, Zante, Cefalonia, Mykonos (very touristic) mount athos

Sorry for not being more helpful, but it's still better than nothing. Also i'm sure you'll find a lot of infos if you use google a bit, there are a lot of good itineraries about greece
>>
>>1269896

other nice places, all islands: Zacinto, Samo, Chio (i'm using the italian names here, the greek ones are probably different)

Don't go to sparta, the city is really small and there areno ruins or anything related to the old Sparta. In crete, be sure to check agios nikolaos and Heraklion

Food: the yogurt with honey is amazing, the moussaka is very nice, and then there's the souvlaki, wich is like a shish kebab, but with more spices and herbs. They put everywhere their damn sauce made with yogurt and cucumber, despite being a fan of yogurt I really hated that one. Oh and be sure to try Rakia (a liquor) and Greek coffee (coffe mixed with ice)

Pretty high concentration of Jewish people.
>>

Simple:
>overall feeling of a school field trip
>a pretty good but very closely guided tour where you won't see anything they don't want you to see
>a lot of propaganda but what would you expect from a tour that is purely made to attract people to move to Israel?
>don't expect to get any answers to anything that is slightly controversial

It's pretty much the equivalent of a "free" 3 day vacation in a time share resort. They want to sell you a product. In this case it's a country/idea.

fight me.

after a few travels you will realize that it really is not as amazing as some make it out to be.
talking to locals gets stale, talking to other tourists gets stale. the tenth watefall isnt that awesome anymore either. the hundreth local food isnt that fascinating either.

during my recent travel (returned last week) i realized i only travel to get out of my daily routine once in a while. else it is really not that special.

So you got bored of traveling, do something else dipshit, I used to love going outdoors and camping and all that good stuff and now I'm not that into it, does that mean that going outdoors is a meme? No. It means that I got bored of it.

This may be surprising but not everyone is a faggot like you
>>
>>1268319

>talking to locals gets stale
Never has happened, then again I don't talk about the same subjects/locations all the time. Many times I end up at a bar and learn a shit load about things I never knew, over a few pints.

>talking to other tourists gets stale.
See above.

>the tenth watefall isnt that awesome anymore either.
Then stop going and seeing them, plan ahead to things to see/do well in advance before going somewhere. Seriously one of my biggest complaints is people who book something, go there and "will figure it out when I get there" shit. If you haven't looked up and figured reasons to go somewhere, DON'T. BOOK. A. TRIP. THERE.

> the hundreth local food isnt that fascinating either.

Depends, lots of people around the world sometimes never get to experience X/Y/Z type of foods. This is completely a you thing.

>i realized i only travel to get out of my daily routine once in a while.
You are just using travel as a form of escapism that you are facing that is a bigger problem. Why not do other hobbies and mix it up, seriously if to get out of the rut you just off and travel somewhere(sounds like similar location as well), it will be more enjoyable.

I travel for a lot of my job across the US, I use to find it boring but then I started planning niche places to go and visit outside the main path. Have had fun ever since.

trams and ferries are great, use trams wherever possible. buses are okay.
you can get a chipcard for västtrafiken at eg. the booth at central station.

the center is really walkable, too.
if there's good weather, i'd recommend to take the tram to the south pier, and take a ferry to the archipelago (just be sure to check the timetable for the way back, too). you can use all of it with that same chipcard.
>>
>>1268206
thanks for the help. How much does this chipcard cost for, like, one day?The archipleago must be amazing
>>
>>1268209
i'd go for the pay as you go version.
http://www.vasttrafik.se/#!/en/tickets-and-prices/

fare calculator:
http://reseplanerare.vasttrafik.se/bin/query.exe/sn

in one zone you can travel for 90 minutes with the same ticket, multiple zones 180 minutes...

there are tourist passes, etc, but you have to travel a lot for those to be worth it. it's a walkable center.

Has anyone here ever had problem obtaining chinese tourist visa with only a one way ticket? I've already admitted my application, but now I've started to worry they will decline it, and it's a time sensitive matter for me.
And assuming they will grant me the visa, will the airlines (aeroflot) let me on board?

>>
If you have the visa, yes, they'll let you fly.

I know it's possible to get a chinese visa without plane tickets with an agency, otherwise no idea. Please keep us updated, I'm genuinely interested.
>>
>>1267842
Yeah of course they give you visas if you have no flights. I walked right over the border from Hong Kong, and walked right back over.
>>
if you have the visa you are sorted, that's all they need to see.
if you get rejected consider getting a refundable ticket, use that info to get your visa at which point you cancel the ticket and then yeah you're good to go. flew from tokyo to beijing on my own as a tourist.
i went through an agency and it wasnt terribly cheap but they sorted that shit easy for me.

I live in Michigan.

There's absolutely nothing hardcore about Downtown Detroit. Crime rates are significantly below the national average, and there are a fair few attractions and sporting arenas. It's a nice place to visit and spend an evening, if you live close by or are staying the night.

The legitimately dangerous parts of the city are its residential neighborhoods, which have zero touristic value unless you're the sort of person who enjoys ogling poverty.

Going to Detroit doesn't make you hardcore, unless you drove out to Brightmoor or Joy Road and started doing cartwheels down the street with a Ku Klux Klan hat on.

Okay, so I want to travel to North Korea, (Laugh if you want, but it's the goal I've set myself), I live in Glasgow, Scotland.
You can get a 3-day, 2-night stay in North Korea, with day-long tours, and a coach that takes you into the country from Beijing, and back again, for £390. Works for me.
I have an absolute, total budget of £800.
I cannot find a plane ticket to China that's lower than £535, which is a problem.
I thought that maybe I could get there, by going through Europe to the Russian border, (three coach rides totalling roughly £100, no visas, would take about 3 days, all acceptable to me), then catch the train to Moscow, then get the Trans-Siberian Railroad to Vladivostok, cross the border into China, and catch another train to Beijing. The Trans-Siberian journey would take six days, which would be a pain in the arse, but would do it if there were absolutely no other options. I would need to get two visas, one for Russia, and one for China, but the China one, I would have needed to get anyway, as I need to get to Beijing at some point.
Finally found a place with accurate prices for the Trans-Siberia, turns out whole Journey from Moscow onwards would've cost about £565, so no fucking savings there. On top of that, turns out getting a Visa to Russia is virtually impossible with a British Passport, (not sure what the Visa requirements would be like if I was just passing through, but it seems like more trouble than it's worth.)
So, that whole plan is fucked.
So, yeah, if any of you have any idea how to get from Glasgow to Beijing for £400, or less, I'm all fucking ears.

>if any of you have any idea how to get from Glasgow to Beijing for £400, or less, I'm all fucking ears.

Unless you either hitchhike and slum it on trains or finds an error fare, you won't find a flight that cheap anytime soon.

It'll be even worse when Brexit lowers the value of the pound even more and doubly so if talks break down, there's no deal and flights are literally grounded.

Honestly, you'd think North Korea would charge more $/£ 5,000 to get into North Korea. I guess communists don't know economics.
>>
>>1269525
You're thinking like a whore.
>hurr durr if I charge $300/hour I'll make more money than if I charge $100/hour.

No, you won't. There are a lot more guys willing to pay 2 50s for a good time than dumping 300 bucks to spooge. At higher prices you lose customers, unless you make it an absurdly high price like $100,000.

There's not a lot of people that want to go to North Korea, and most of them are edgy and closer to poor than rich. $5,000 is about as high as they can possibly go and have anyone besides journalists actually show up.
