Hello everyone!

I'm planning a trip to Europe next year for my honeymoon. We initially decided on Rome, Paris, and Amsterdam. However, with the rise of refugees and terrorism in Paris, I'm slightly hesitant about us traveling there. Therefore, I have a few questions:

1. Is the refugee problem really as bad as they're saying in the news?
2. If it is that bad, what are some alternatives for Paris?

Thanks! Seeing as this is my first trip to Europe, any additional advice is always welcome!

It depends on what you expect. If you think Paris will be all romantic little streets and cheerful girls with bangs and flowery dresses then don't ever step foot in Paris. It's full of poor people and filth in the streets, and immigrants surely don't help (it's nothing new, Paris is known for having a shitton of hobos for since the XIX century, but it got worse). It's also overcrowded by tourists, wich for me is way more unsettling than brown people. As far as terrorist attacks, madmen with hammers and Allah trucks are always possible, but you need to be really unlucky. It's becoming shittier every year, but as Audrey Hepburn said, "Paris is always a good idea" (also because it ain't getting any better in the next years so go while you're in time). There's a lot of stuff to see and things to experience that i don't think you should miss.
>>
Wherever you're from is for sure more dangerous.

Thanks! I appreciate the advice! The reason for my concern is that she's Russian/polish Jew. I'm a Mexican agnostic myself, but I'm brown so I don't think I'll get much flak. Lol.

Amsterdam is easily the european capital of Art, visit museums it's hard to not find one within a few seconds of walking in any direction.
As for cheap places to sleep, airbnb or check for hostels or cheap hotels.
Can't wait to visit this beautiful city again.

Haven't heard of any recent "set the foreigner on fire 'cause he's stealing our kids" (which has happened several times, mostly in small towns) so you should be ok, but it is a dangerous place, but not as dangerous as Detroit so you should be ok.

The only recent thing I could find was an article about a bunch of Australians getting their bus jacked.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4452056/Young-Australian-backpackers-kidnapped-Guatemala.html

>We were on a shuttle that was going from Antigua, Guatemala to León in Nicaragua.
>The shuttle set off at 2am on Saturday morning, but two hours into the trip three bandits shot at the van.

Bordering crossing in the middle of the night. Gee what could go wrong.

I've been to South America various times and know the rules there, just curious how Central America compares.

My wife is Ukrainian and the anon above gave you some sound advice. It should be known that Ukraine is still very much a "chivalry" culture. Open doors for women and be polite and respectful to females.

Try the green borsch. It's a national dish that's different from the red borsch of Russia.

Anon was correct about education. Many women have Masters degrees or higher. They're NOT stupid blonde bitches, so treat them accordingly.

I would advise against discussing politics. It's a sensitive subject. Tread carefully as to not offend anyone. Some drunk Ukrainians might beat the shit out of you for it.

Stay away from Moldovans. Anon was correct when he called them the Mexicans of Ukraine. A lot of them will try to scam you as they come from a gypsy culture.
>>
>>1273917
I suppose in my case, discussing politics (when it was brought up) was okay because I was with friends, and they were really cool with the stuff I told them about veterans in America and how we hold them up as heroes.

The chivalry stuff is totally true, I should have mentioned that. Even when I met a woman in an underground bar and did a line of coke with her after smoking weed and doing shots, I still treated her with a lot of respect and did not even curse around her.

Green Borsch is also really good. OP, just try a variety of dishes while you are there because the food will be pretty unique to you if you've never tried the dishes they serve

If you have a decent amount of money, I suggest staying at either Westin, Starhill Gallery or Concord. I personally prefer Starhill Gallery because of it's close proximity to the heart of the capital and the services the hotel provides.

Hey /trv/, what do you bring along when you're going to visit?

Whether you're sleeping on someone's couch, spare bedroom, maybe living in the attic for months, anything in-between - do you bring a present?

What's good to bring, and what's bad? How much does it depend on the culture you're visiting?

What are some spectacular failures you've experienced in gift giving?

To maybe kickstart the thread: I'm moving for some unknown period of time to live with a friend in Finland in exchange for helping fix up his house, so gift ideas specific for Finland would be handy.

As for past experiences - in Zimbabwe I brought a bag of oranges only to discover that my hosts had an orange tree (not great) - but I watched them painfully decapitate a live chicken for about ten minutes to make me soup using the world's dullest knife, so next time, I brought a new kitchen knife, which they loved.

For a first world country, the presents can't really be based on need, since they will have acquired what they really need. Something local to your home is always nice. Food or drinks or chocolate or whatever from your country. Doesn't have to be food of course. Just be aware of possible customs restrictions on foodstuff.

when i visited a friend in Japan i was advised not to bring anything large / permanent, specifically because they're short on space. food was one of the suggestions (i brought a local huckleberry pancake mix thing that came with instructions, and they seemed happy ... although it's hard to tell in Japan because they'd be perfectly polite if you brought them a sack of dogshit.)

i've heard spicy stuff (e.g. hotsauce, chili powder) is relatively hard to come by in Finland. anyone confirm?

So i've got a trip coming up in a couple weeks starting in Thailand and to kick off the trip i'm thinking of going from Bangkok to Surat Thaini by motorbike. From there taking a ferry to The Full Moon Party. I have about 6 hours of motorbike experience from when I rode one briefly in Indonesia a year ago. I guess my question is: does anyone have experience riding a moped like this through Thailand? Also recommendations for bike rental shops in Bangkok as I will be renting. Really just share any and all advice, thanks!

Expect crazy traffic, and dont drive like a crazy person. Cops will ask you for bribes.

You might die, you would not be the first.
>>
>>1273187
I understand that Thailand has the 2nd most traffic related deaths in the world. 44 in 100,000. But compared to where I live in the U.S it's 18 in 100,000. So really not that much worse. Would you say the traffic would be bad the whole way? Or just in Bangkok?
>>
I hitchhiked that road two years ago, from Bangkok to Chumpon, and then I took the ferry from there to Koh Tao.
The highway is fairly modern and in a really good shape, I didn't find it dangerous. Only real difference to western countries is that the highways in Bangkok aren't really off limits, there is restaurants and places to stop and shantytowns on the sides of the highway, but alot of it is just going through the jungles too.

I think youll be fine.
In Surat Thani, be careful with people trying to scam you, I had really bad vibes there, felt like everyone was waiting for another westerner to cheat money from.

I want to surprise the gf with a vacation in Europe in August.

I'd prefer some kind of beautiful nature scenery-ish vacation, and it has to be warm.

Any recommendations from places you've been in Europe?

>warm
depends on what you see as warm but I guess you have to limit yourself to southern Europe
>beautiful nature
It depends on your preference. Spain can be a bit arid in its interior zones, if you however dig that I definitely recommend that. Italy of course is also amazing, regions like Umbria and Tuscany have great landscapes but it can be touristy around its highlights.
>>
The cities of Andalucia and Cadiz are great spots to visit with your sweetie, and there's some 7/10 nature to be seen.
Catalonia has 11/10 nature, also nice old towns to explore.
>>
>>1272133
It's summer so it will be almost everywhere warm to god damn fucking hot in europe.

We need more info, do you want nature near a city or something like rural nature?
Something more /out/ or a romantic hotel with a 10/10 view?
Beach or Mountains?

Currently living in Georgia and planing to study geology. The problem is geologist make next to nothing here. They're some of the lowest paid in the country.

My family and I are going on a trip this Fall. I'm looking for a place to visit out West and find a college to transfer to. The states I'm currently considering are Arizona, California, Colorado, and Nevada. I know basically nothing about living in these states so any help would be appreciated. My main requirement is where ever I visit has a college nearby that offers geology or environmental science.

Right now my first choice is Reno, NV because UNR offers my major and the out of state tuition is cheap as fuck.

What you like about it, dislike, what's it like to live there, universities if you know anything about them, etc.

Anything would be helpful. I've never been past the Mississippi R, I have no idea what it's like in this area.
>>
>>1271991
Go to Wyoming. With a geology degree you can eventually specialize in petroleum which is the biggest industry there. College will be cheap once you qualify for instate tuition, living is cheap, the pay will be good, the nature in Wyoming is great too, and also there aren't too many people (people are awful anyway).

Lincoln Park area is where you should spend most of your time, especially as a college student. It's an area that can be fun, even if you're just hanging out.

Also, Chicago also has a huge free zoo near downtown.

Have any bars or pubs to recommend? I'll be turning 21 that week so will be going to bars (legally) for the first time.
