How much do you guys worry about walking around with a nice camera in developing countries? I know of one guy who walks around African and Middle Eastern cities with a DLSR camera in hand, is he completely stupid? What do you guys do?

>What do you guys do?
I use my phone now. It's lightest.
If I think my phone would attract too much attention for being too new or nice in that country, then I use a small subcompact powershot or my little pentax camera that fits in an altoids tin :P

To me, amazing pictures isn't my hobby. I travel enough that I already know I'm not blowing up vistas of my photographs to hang around my house. I am taking photos of myself, things I find interesting as they happen, gallery placards and objects in museums I might want to research or remember for some reason, my shit rental car, view from my hotel, random stuff. I'm not there to duplicate that scene from the Charles bridge in every postcard, ya know? Sometimes, well, you do want those kinds of pics, but most of the time I don't want to wear the weight of anything I don't have to wear. Carefree and empty handed :) If you aren't like me, and you will be discreet and careful, go ahead, but don't get bold about it. Be aware always and choose to keep it hidden if you think that is what you need to do that day.

The rule of thumb is:
For anything general your smartphone of the Samsung S5 or iPhone 6 generation or better will do the job
If it should be better, a cheap quality point and shoot will do the trick
If you get paid per pic or photography is your favorit hobby and you don't give a fuck to carry 10kg worth of lenses, well bring your DSLR.

Even a $3k DSLR with $20k worth of lenses won't turn a terrible picture into a great one. A good photographer will get better pics with his budget smartphone then someone with zero talent with top of the line equipment.

Hi, /trv/,

I will be traveling to Salem, MA during the month of October for the Halloween season this year. I've heard that it is a great place to visit during the Halloween season in large part due to the fact that the Salem Witch Trials were held here. Anyways, I was wondering if anyone had ever been to Salem (preferably around Halloween time) and has any suggestions on fun things to do/see? I will also be spending a day in Boston and a day in Providence, RI while there. Any and all suggestions of things to do for any of these cities would be greatly appreciated.

I was in Boston for work in october last year and because we worked all day I only had the evening off. Went to salem at 11pm - 2am and just walked around. Found a graveyard and ended up having car trouble but managed to get it started and got away before the ghosts got me. Was /spooky/.
>>
It is a very small touristy area, I was there the saturday before Halloween and they had a huge carnival. They have some shoddy museums and decent places to eat. It is cool to see the graveyards and the old houses, but after about 4 hours you will probably want to head back to Boston

Let's have a luggage thread. Post what luggage you use, its pros and its cons.

I bought pic related several years ago, I can't remember the price but it was at least over $200AUD off RRP due to an end of season sale and the green colour being unpopular.
My overall opinion of the bag is mixed; the first time I travelled with it (Australia to USA) I regretted purchasing a backpack instead of wheeled, hard suitcase; It's a pain in the arse to constantly swing a loaded backpack on and off your shoulders instead of just pushing a suitcase. However after travelling to less developed places like Sri Lanka and Cuba I realise the appeal of having something you can lug on your back, off of the ground, for longer periods. Eventually I'll get round to purchasing a hard suitcase so I can have a choice of either. If my backpack were to wear out I would replace it with something smaller, around 60L (70L is overkill and uncomfortable to carry when fully loaded) and without so many external straps as baggage handlers tend to grab them instead of the handles.
Two things I have found very useful: A carry-on backpack, it leaves both hands free while moving through airports and can be used for day-trips at your destination. Also luggage in an unusual colour is easier to spot at baggage carousels and much less likely to be stolen than more anonymous black, grey or brown shades.

looks to hiker for my tastes, way too big...

I am looking at the AER travel pack, would love for someone who has one to comment...
my current back is 35l that expands into a 45l. plenty of room for me... but its a top loader and it drives me crazy.
>>
Hard suitcases and strollers are the fucking bane of travelling, they only work properly on flat surfaces like malls or airport terminals. Good luck getting to your hotel through cobbled streets or not pissing off everyone around you lugging that piece of shit. Wouldn't recommend anyone except Grandmother getting one.

I stick with a cabin sized backpack personally as I prefer to get where I want to be without checking a bag or lugging dead weight through fields or whatever.
>>
On my last trip, I was actually traveling overseas by myself for the first time, so I was still very new to the whole thing, and that included luggage.

I was already on board with the idea of traveling with just a backpack. Apparently people who do it are called "backpackers," and it's apparently a satisfying feeling because 1. You can accomplish more while packing less, and 2. There is far less hassle at the airports.

While I was in love with the idea, I clearly hadn't done enough research. I did not realize the variety of backpacks that were truly available. I actually used a cheap generic school backpack that was around 20-25L (maybe even less because of its awkward shape). I'm actually impressed that I traveled out of something so small & impractical. It held up surprisingly well, and the only thing that got damaged was a single compression strap from pulling on it too hard.

For my next trip, I plan on taking something more rugged, maybe even designed specifically for travel. I'm really contemplating a pack from PacSafe.

*Info on prostitution*
Please try to refrain from asking questions about prostitution.
Japan's sex industry is almost completely inaccessible to foreigners who do not speak Japanese.

*Note about the JR Pass*
Many people ask about whether or not the JR Rail Pass is worth it. It depends on your itinerary.

Plug your itinerary into Hyperdia to determine ticket costs, then compare to the below JR Pass options:
>7 day Pass: 29,110¥
>14 day Pass: 46,390¥

I'm looking for Russian-speaking countries where I can go to improve my Russian while at the same time learning something and having some great experiences.

What are your opinions on interesting Russian-speaking countries to go to, aside from Russia? Any recommendations for stuff to do, be it nature, culture, food, etc., are welcome.

Personally I've been to Latvia, Georgia, and Kyrgyzstan. I'd be happy to answer any questions others might have about those countries to the best of my ability.

Ukraine.

I'm amazed that you didn't even consider it. Ukraine is by far the easiest Russian speaking country to get into, and unless you stay someplace like Odessa, almost everyone will be speaking Russian. Sure, the slang will be different and the accent will be different, but it's the closest you'll get without going to Russia.

Just stay away from the far east. Kharkiv is as far as you want to go

Hey /trv/ i'm planning on hitchhicking in Canada, i would get there flying. The problem is: i've never hitchhicked or visited Canada. The travel would be in summer of next year and it would start on Vancouver and stay in Canada around 10 days.
Where should i head? How expensive is Canada? With how much money could i stay there 10 days considering i would take the basics with me? Is it safe there? What should i keep in mind considering i'm from Mexico and my city is damn hot? Thanks

do you have a return trip booked out of vancouver?

10 days isn't a lot of time if you have to hitchhike back to vancouver, could get to calgary or edmonton

I'd look into staying closer to Vancouver, just going over to Vancouver island, you can stay in hostels for $30/day, if you buy food at the store $10/day, include bus fares and you'd want $50/day at least if you have no local contacts

expect high temperatures of 35, overnight low of 10
>>
>>1277709
No, i don't have a return trip booked out of vancouver. Yeah i have contacts in vancouver. I wouldn't mind taking the return flight in another city.
What's the best route i could take? It doesn't matter if it takes more time.
>>
>>1277720
Highway 1 down to calgary, by far the easiest route and you get to drive through the rockies, and you get to go to the tourist trap Banff has become (or Canmore which is 40 minutes away, and not as touristy). Whistler is also a tourist trap. Also pass Yoho, Golden, Lake Louise on Hwy 1 but a lot of these places are a lot better during ski season.

Or you can ferry over to Vancouver Island and do Victoria and Nanaimo. This would probably be easier to transit.

It's about 10-12 hours from Vancouver to Calgary, Banff is 40 minutes off. Calgary Stampede already ended which is basically the only toursity event in Calgary (it's a good city to grow up, but nothing special to travel to). Edmonton has a big mall. I go to school in Edmonton and there isn't much to do, Jasper is okay, but isn't as close to Edmonton as Banff is to Calgary. Edmonton is also an extra 2 and a half hour transit.

Okanagan is also an option from Vancouver, but it gets fucking hot at night. Kelowna is nice, and if you like wine then it could be something you consider, but you don't really get mountains.

Don't expect to get to Toronto in 10 days, and there is even less to do in Manitoba and Saskatchewan on Hwy 1.

Closet fag that's turning 30 this year. Feel like I need to get fucked and lose the V tag before I become a wizard.

My friend, I'm completely straight and even I went gay while I was in Germany. The gay nightlife there is insane, and I could say that my most memorable sexual experiences were with gay Germans. It wasn't just about sex though, these guys were really cool, and we hung out like friends when we weren't having gay piss orgies

Wasn't sure where to post this, but I figured /trv/ may know someone who's a pilot (parents, family friends, etc).

I'm seriously considering getting a commercial pilot's license, but I have a history of mental illness (depression and anxiety disorder). Luckily I've never been committed so there's no hard documentation on that front, but I have gone to therapists and have been prescribed medication (I don't currently take any). I've stabilized well for years without needing meds or special help, but I do have this in my past. I could lie, but I wonder about them being able to pull medical records or forcing me to self-disclose or else they won't hire. I'm totally confident in myself to be fine and not fly the plane into the ocean -- if I had any doubts I wouldn't even think about getting a license because that'd be too fucked.

Possible?

>>
>>1275287
Possible yes but forget about the big jets/airlines if you don't want to lie.
You can always be a island hopper pilot, business jet pilot or even fly PAX around for a small airline in Indonesia or Africa.
The last one is where the actual fun happens and I will go back doing exactly that in 2 years.

>>
>>1275302

Tell me more about this actual fun; I'm an adventurous dude.

I was also thinking about doing the island hopper flights in Hawaii (where I'm from).
>>
>>1275317
It's flying small puddle jumpers like a PC-6 or the Caravan to small often unpaved airports delivering goods and PAX. You're literally the life line and link to civilisation or fly the same small planes around the world greatest safari parks and stuff like the victoria falls...
Everyone is in a good mood, you actually fly the plane and not just babysit the flight computer and you will get some really crazy sometimes fucked up experiences.

Pretty good payment (especially as it's dirt cheap to life there), those companies actually care about their pilots (because your bosses are actual pilots) and value loyalty.

'Say you are planning on taking 2 years off to travel... is it worth it to buy a sailboat ?
I had a guy in a hostel tell me that you could sell the boat for more than you paid for it when you are done.
He also said its the cheapest way to travel once the boat is covered since you dont have to buy plane tickets or hotel rooms.

Then why was he in a hostel instead of on a sailboat?
>>
>>1273048
Met him in La Paz mexico. He had gotten lonely I think. It was Carnival and he was trying to bang traveler chicks.
He offered to take me sailing around the bay but the way he offered was to a few of us and it was pretty clear he was only interested in the girls coming with him so I politely stayed behind.
>>
That guy is a complete idiot. If you want to sail around the world a few times and enjoy it that way (you almost assuredly do not) then fine. But it is not cheaper, sailing across the Atlantic is without a doubt more expensive than flying (And it takes weeks as opposed to hours). Marinas are not going to provide you with a slip for free, so either you enjoy shorepower at a cost or your anchor off shore relying on a diesel generator for juice. You might be able to sell the boat for about what you paid for it, but cost of ownership is exorbitant on boats.

Plus sailboats in particular are slow, unreliable and really not as energy efficient as you think. If you really want to liveaboard the much more realistic option is living a great looper on a Nordic Tug, which will be more comfortable and give you access to the inland waterways without having to demast. You wont be crossing any oceans, but you really do not want to do that anyways.

For 19k you can live anywhere for 4 months. Do you want to absolutely maximize your money?

Going to Taiwan, Hong Kong, and either Shenzhen or Macau in the late fall. (Taiwan for 9 days, Hong Kong for 3, with one of the days and evenings being spent in Macau or Shenzhen) All I'm asking is:

What culinary culture should I experience? What are some things I can't get here in Vancouver?

I'm interested in history (particularly wartime), what are some historical sites to visit?

What are some attractions in general?

Shenzhen or Macau?

What are some trash attractions that are too overrated to bother with, and some underrated attractions (particularly wondering if Jiufen is worth it)?

Food: Guabao, Rice dumplings Pineapple Cakes, Milk Tea in TW

Military History: Kinmen or Matsu islands

Attractions: Alishan , Taroko Gorge

Overrated: Sun Moon Lake , Taipei 101 in TW, Tai Ao in HK

Underrated: Chi Lin Nunnery in HK

Jiufen: If you're expecting more than a quaint seaside village, the Jiufen is going to disappoint. If you are looking for a quiet little getaway from Taipei for a few hours, then Jiufen is quite nice. The mask shop there is still one of the most interesting places I've ever been to.
>>
I don't think any of the attractions in Taiwan are really all that exciting. Jiufen is meh, 101 is just a big building, Sun Moon Lake is pretty but swarming with tourists. Maybe the Royal Palace Museum if you're into history, their collection is pretty unreal. Honestly, I had more fun dicking around the night markets or wandering off to random little spots on a scooter than I did with any of the big attractions.
>>
>>1272643
For Taiwan:

Night markets are absolute must for Taipei, plan your travel to hit at least two or three big ones, food options are amazing and affordable.

Jiufen was crowded as fuck last time I went and the traffic is insanity on weekends. Definitely plan on making a day of it if you go. Nearby gold museum is worth a trip if you're in the area. If anything it's fun for architecture.

I spent three days on Lyudao island off the southeast coast and wish I had spent more time there. You get to scooter all over the island, there are plenty of spots for swimming, nice little restaurants in town... The whole place was destroyed by a massive typhoon literally a week before my arrival (literally the hotel I chose was missing half the building) and even with stripped trees and dilapidated infrastructure it was still one of the prettiest most memorable experiences I've ever had travelling. Super fun~

Sorry if this is a dumb question
Do you buy a one way ticket? I've heard that most countries aren't ok with one way tickets
If you dont do you need to come back in the country you landed in to fly home?
6 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>1277602
Not a dumb question. I've run into the same issue. It's hard to tell if you will be stopped at the border and questioned or not. I don't think anyone can really give you a straight answer. You might get away with it, but if it bothers you look for a cheap bus, train or flight you can buy online. You could also buy a refundable ticket home or something.

You might be able to check their customs online and see if the country you are going to cares. I was stopped at an airport a few times and I had to spend about an hour answering questions. They let me go because I understood how I planned on leaving the country when I planned to. I could give them a good answer and good dates for when I thought I might depart. I also had a loose but well planned itinerary.
>>
>>1277602
I've never had a problem with one way tickets. Except to get a visa for China, where I printed out a fake return ticket email (just changed the dates flight number etc).

Sometimes the airline (at check in) with ask for an onward ticket. They will often settle for having you sign a declaration (basically: if I'm refused entry, the airline is not responsible for buying me a return ticket).

>you dont do you need to come back in the country you landed in to fly home?
This one I can answer with 100% certainty: you just need an onward ticket out of the country, it doesn't need to be your home country.

The worst possible case scenario is you can get on the airport wifi and buy a refundable onward ticket and cancel it.

Basically, you're good bro.

Do I need to go back to thailand to come back home or can I use it in a viet airport?
