The galleria and the duomo are the best spots in the city. The duomo is nice for only a few minutes though. It's kinda like the Times Square of Italy.

DESU last time i went I didn't find much to do, so I just went to bars and talked to British tourists

Dear trv
In two weeks I will travel to Slovenia. Rafting is high on the list. What Soca river rafting tours can you recommend me? I will stay at Bled and don't have a car to bring me to the meeting spot (public transportation in that region is not that good).
The 3Glav tour looks great, but I think it is a bit expensive.
Any recommendations about Slovenia in general are much appreciated

I think 3Glav Adventures / Canyoning Bob (yes, really) does rafting as well. My girlfriend and I went canyoning and paragliding with them. They can either pick you up at Camping Bled or at their office in the town. Nice people, very helpful and friendly. We had a great time with them.

Thanks for your responds. I too found 3Glav and their tours look great but I find 120 euros a bit much for a tour and rafting. Or should I just go for it?
>>
>>1278953
Depends on your budget. I thought it was well worth it, but I wasn't short on cash at the time. I liked the friendly staff, the pickup service and the professionalism they had. I've been on similar canyoning excursions in France and I thought the people organizing those were a lot less careless. The guide was ahead of the group when half of them still had to do jumps. In Slovenia they took great safety measures and they encouraged the whole group to work together. We went with them in 2012 and 2008. I see prices have gone up by 10 euro's since then. Canyoning is 60 and paragliding 100. I'd recommend both.

I don't get the 100 euro's though! When I go to their site rafting the soca is 42 euro's per person. Which I think is a very fair price for what you get.

Sup /trv/, American here.

Next June/July I'd like to visit Europe and experience some of the culture. I plan on landing in Barcelona, then travelling to Monaco, Maranello, Paris, then ending my trip in Sussex. For those of you who have visited Europe, what are some tips and anecdotal wisdom you have? I might visit alone or with a friend, that's not decided yet, I'll be flying out of NYC, and I plan on bringing a few thousand in USD to finance the trip. Everything else is in the air.

Difficult to answer such generic questions. Why Maranello, you're really into Ferrari? You should Check Bologna and Cinque Terre while there.
For money, honestly i wouldn't bother bringing a lot of cash, credit cards are accepted like everwyhere nowadays.
>>
>>1278884
Credit cards aren't always accepted everywhere, but you can use them with ATMs everywhere.
>>
Maranello is a village. There should be a cool Ferrari Museum there and plus there's the Formula 1 track, but not much else. Visiting Italy just for that is a total waste, at least check Bologna, is the city where I live and very near Maranello, wonderful place to spend a weekend

Help me decide where to go, /trv/
I'm moving to the UK next month which means I'll be within budget airline distance of some awesome places. I've highlighted my top choices in red, but I think I'll only be able to do three during the time I have. Which should I choose?
Dark grey is the places I've been.
>Croatia
Good nature but I'm scared of landmines because I stealth camp. Good social backpacker scene; cheap.
>Turkey
Better nature, cheaper, not sure about social scene
>Georgia
Best nature, generally very interesting, but more expensive and time-consuming
>Mali
I'm trying to see every Saharan country; Mali is the easiest option visa-wise ATM
>Lebanon
Mountains look awesome and I want to practice my Arabic
>India
I don't know, it just seems like the kind of place everyone should visit
>Bangladesh
Supposedly like India without the hassle/scammers/touts

Thanks for any advice.

If one of your top priorities is safety, I'd say Croatia and Georgia. The rest of them have some serious issues these days you have to keep in mind.

For example:
Turkey has a power-hungry socialist for a president who declared war on: Change, Kurds and The Internet for Libel (he blocked all of Wikipedia recently).
Mali still has its little terrorist minority which permanently changed and destroyed The Dakar Tour.
Lebanon is still suffering from Syrian spillovers and frequent attacks in the cities.
India is unstable these days due to the rising debts and poverty. And the government corruption is almost as bad as the Philippines these days.
Bangladesh is actually worse than India, the only pro is that they fixed their border disputes, but not the population density.

Hello /trv/ this is less of a traveling question and more of a moving question. I am originally from Wichita, KS and I am deployed to Kuwait at the moment. I am 25 years old and looking for a new place to call home. The only issue is I am having trouble deciding where to go. I enjoy city life but, I don't think I could ever live in a city larger than 500k or smaller than 50k. I enjoy going to bars, listening to local music with a preference on rock or alternative. I am looking for a new place to plant some roots but, having only lived in Wichita for 90% of my life and the majority of my travel has been with the military I never really got to see what was out there. Any suggestions for me to research more thoroughly later will be appreciated.

bro, I gotta tell you something that your sergeant should have told you, and it's a real fuckin shame that nobody tells you military guys this.

When I was in Korea as a teacher I saw GI's everywhere, with their families living on base, out with their kids and shit... They all looked like zombies. Dead men walking. Don't fucking fall for that bullshit, dude.

Do not put down roots in the military. You are a rolling stone, and you have a uniform that's a license to wreck pussy. Get a box of condoms, get a tattoo of an American flag or some shit on your bicep, fuck any girl that will let you, and do some stupid shit with your life while you still have the youth and the freedom to get away with it.

If you put down roots while you're in the service you'll get fucked. If you try to get a house somewhere, guess what, you're deploying somewhere else. If you try to get a QT, guess what now she's a military wife, and while you're out there in afghanistan getting blown up by cellphones and shit, she's at home, bored as fuck, living on base surrounded by another batch of hot sweaty 19 year old dudes that just signed up.

You don't need this shit in your life right now man. The only constant in your life right now is that Uncle Sam is gonna tell you to go somewhere, and then just when you think you're gonna stay somewhere for a minute, he's gonna tell you to go somewhere else.

Figure out where you wanna live and what kind of woman you want to have AFTER you get out and hit that GI Bill. But don't wife up or root down until you're done with the military.

Every military guy I've ever met when traveling looked like shit and wanted to die if he had roots while he was still in uniform. That shit is a recipe for disaster.

>>1278791
I really do appreciate the advise and this is really fucking solid advise I actually do give a similar talk to my soldiers.
I should of given more information about myself. I am in the reserve and currently deployed, I am not looking for a woman I am looking for a city that I can start my professional career. I am at the end of my 6 and I don't agree with the direction the current Army is going.
>>
>>1278927
I'd recommend The Netherlands.

Not even Amsterdam has more than a million people, the Nightlife is solid in all of the cities and it's a perfect place to "plant your roots".

The only real con is the Language, but it's easy if you have some experience in German.

Good Luck Soldier...

Hi!

I'll be making the drive up to Vancouver BC from Oregon. This will be my second time going. My first time was brief and unsatisfying. I have a few questions though that I was hoping the trv community could help me out with.

My friend and I are planning on camping to save money and just because we like doing so. My first question is, is this a lost cause on a July weekend around this metropolitan area? I was hoping to camp relatively close to the city. Also, is there some sort of difference between American camping and Canadian camping that I should be aware of? Am I basically going to HAVE to make reservations?

Saturday, we are planning to spend all day in the city. Cool stores, Stanley park, lookout skyscraper, and barhopping (we are 20 so figured fucc yeah let's do it). Anything else earth shattering that I should make it my mission to see? If not, we're just gonna go with the flow and explore the city. Any bars to recommend?

Sunday we're gonna wake up early and hike to Garibaldi lake (pic related). Does anybody have experience with this? Or any other better hikes around this area to offer? That one looked like the most majestic

TLDR
>places to camp around Vancouver?
>cool things to see in the city?
>cool nature hikes around the city?
also Vancouver general

for private campsites, there's one on the rez in north van, and there's one in burnaby, neither are good locations, especially if you want to go out at night, spend like $20 more to stay at the jericho hostel, pic related

garibaldi lake is all the way up to whistler, do you expect to do that, and then drive home on sunday? from vancouver the hike and drive roundtrip is about 9 hours, I'd stay closer and do mt froome
>>
There are plenty of campsites out on Vancouver Island (which, imo, is way chiller and more beautiful than around the city). No idea if you'll need to reserve, I imagine you might have to.

Go out for a day and visit Victoria

I'm bored and i have a lot of free time (possibly for the last time in my life), so i'm slowly generating increasingly stupid ideas. My current idea is to ride on bicycle something over 1000km from near sea side of Poland to Hungary, and then back.

How close to masochism do you think this idea is, considering that my greatest biking achivement so far was riding ~20km per day to college and back? Will i suffer from bad weather? Or from any possible effects of biking all day (except obvious, exhaustion)? My current physical abilities are probably hitting the rock bottom right now, but i hope i'll get better with every day of biking. If i'll need time to rest, i'll just stop for a day somewhere, fortunately i don't have to keep tight schedule.

Also, i intend to spend most of my nights in a tent, with couple of exceptional hostel stays for proper shower and good bed. Do you think this kind of savant poorfag travel is a bad idea? I'd stay somewhere near ponds if possible, wash myself after day of cycling in those ponds with soap. Is it absolutely necessary to have those pro biking clothes, or do i have a chance to keep my skin on my legs even in a pair of shorts?

Not to mention that my bike is far from good. I actually have a petrol engine slapped on it right now, and the bike wasn't really lightweight to begin with, so i'm sure it weights over 20kg (10kg engine + 10kg bike). With bags, tent, food, clothes, hanfdul of tools and other necessities it will probably weight stupidly much.

I don't want to remove engine though, i love idea of connecting it back and still making kilometers while resting, and people who see it always react somehow to it which kinda makes me happy. That being said, most of travelling would be done on pedals, with engine being more of an emergency booster/exhaustion reliever.

tl;dr i want to bike a lot and i don't bike much, my bike is also heavy, will i die or hate myself for doing it?

>How close to masochism do you think this idea is, considering that my greatest biking achivement so far was riding ~20km per day to college and back?
Depends entirely on you. Shouldn't be a problem though. Just slow down and take rests if you think you're too much of a fuccboi to continue cycling.
>Will i suffer from bad weather?
Depends on the weather and how bad a dude you are to cycle through rainy days.
>Or from any possible effects of biking all day (except obvious, exhaustion)?
Might get some cramps or a sore ass if you're saddle is shit. Apart from that, nothing really assuming you're a healthy individual.
>Do you think this kind of savant poorfag travel is a bad idea?
Not at all. Why would it be?
>Is it absolutely necessary to have those pro biking clothes, or do i have a chance to keep my skin on my legs even in a pair of shorts?
I do bicycle trips in cargo shorts and jeans. Don't want to look like those racing fags in their tryhard homo outfits. Never had a problem.
>Not to mention that my bike is far from good.
This might be a problem.
Personally I think carrying to much stuff on your bicycle if the worst mistake you can do. You will be awfully slow on an overloaded bicycle. Try packing all your shit on your bike and go for a test ride to see if you can manage acceptable speeds like that. I'd drop the engine though.
>>
>>1278242
damn, i really love my engine. This little chink piece of shit was brought to perfection after entire year of trial and error, although vibrations on the handlebars probably don't make it suitable for all day long ride. It's relatively lightweight two-stroke, will +10kg really make this much of a difference?

On the other hand, going there purely and exclusively on my own sounds a little bit nicer than going there with the engine, even if it wouldn't be used as a main source of power. It's good to know that normal clothes are alright.

I guess trying before doing sounds reasonable. I'll try to pedal with the engine attached (but not used) to the nearest water resort place, it's 80 km from me. If i feel like it wasn't good enough, i'll remove it.

>Why would it be?
Thunderstorms, wild animals, general downsides of living in a small box made of cloth near the forest. But i guess it shouldn't be a problem after all, maybe except the possibility of long rain period.

>+10kg really make this much of a difference?
Absolutely. A couple of kilos often make the difference between being able to ride up a hill and having to walk your bike in my experience. Expect to be several km/h slower with an extra +10kg attached to your bike.

But as said, pack your bike and go for a test ride to see if the weight bothers you with your engine. Bicycle touring is somewhat of an edgy hobby. There's lots of different ways to go about it and little advice that everybody agrees upon. I wholeheartedly recommend packing as light as possible though.

I'm doing a solo travel tour of Europe after I graduate from college next summer.

Basically I plan on hitting 5 cities:

1. Chicago to NYC
2. NYC to London
3. London to Paris
4. Paris to Berlin
5. Berlin to Istanbul

I intend to stay for a week in NYC, London, Paris, and Berlin but two weeks in Istanbul.

I'm open to adding more locations, as I will have two months off to do whatever the fuck I want before I start my job.

I want to take one suitcase full of my shit, but not much else. I will be using airbnb for lodging but am open to hostels. Most of my trip will be solo until I arrive in Istanbul, whereby I'll be with my friends.

Does /trv/ have any recommendations?

I get what you mean, but still, lol.

Honestly /trv/ will probably hate your list since you're only going to mainstream locations. Nothing particularly wrong with that, bit don't you want to see some more unique locations? Berlin to Istanbul is also skipping out on SO MANY cool places.

no, not really trying to do anything crazy right now. I'm planning a basic bitch tour because I've never really been to Europe and am starting from basics.

Skip Chicago to NYC you will save almost as much money as you will spend in Europe with exception of London. Go to Amsterdam and ditch your plans with intention of taking bus to Berlin. You will meet friends in Amsterdam. Stay at White Tulip hostel. 4 days in Amsterdam and you will move on.

Been there many times on business.

If you love the smell of sewage, love getting sick from the food, love having people constantly grabbing you attempting to get money from you, and love smelling people who haven't bathed in more than a year....then it's the place for you.

It's a complete and utter shithole. I wouldn't have kept going back there if my company didn't pay me so much.

Every now and then, it was good to smell a dead body. It was a welcome relief from constantly smelling the shit and piss of several thousand people in the middle of the street.

Learn as much Spanish as you can. Prepare yourself to eat the shittiest food possible. No way not to get scammed, it's a way of life. Other than that it's a very fun place and doesn't leave anyone not touched even a bit. Just go with the flow and enjoy the ride.

Also scamming is a way of life anywhere that is underdeveloped and you have money. locals gets scammed by eachother, let alone a foreign student with serious dosh.

stay at casa particulares.. they will find you, no need to worry about that.. everyone will hustle the shit outta you, it gets tiring but its a way of life.. I found that if I was alone I had constant harassment, but if you make "friends" with a local, meaning choose one that annoys you the least, make sure he gets some drinks, and if you need anything get him to go get it for you.
The other jinteros will see that you are taken care of and leave you alone.
People will always try to get you to go to a restaurant they know about.. you should occasionally go with them.. the state run restaurants are grim.. but the small family ones can be very good...
dont talk politics, learn to dance, drink rum and practice spanish with the locals.. If you want to pick up, its not hard.. just be aware you pay for everything and she will need money for whatever reason when she is leaving..
Havana is by far the most expensive, Vinales is beautiful, Trinidad is beautiful, Santa Clara sucks.. but you will probably end up there at some point because of the bus system.
