I leave for Erie, Pennsylvania in 6 days (by plane, hyped, of course.)
Anyone know anything cool to do there beside frolicking in lake water? Gotta make the most of my short visit. I'm meeting an internet friend there for the second time, and its summer. We have to party.

Hey /trv/,

I have a very small conundrum I'm currently trying to resolve.

I spent about a month traveling through Mexico before hopping over to Tanzania to visit a Peace Corps friend in Zanzibar. While I'd originally planned to stay with him in the village for a month and a half, I'm probably going to leave earlier.

While being here has been a very interesting experience, I'm coming down with island fever. The local food is hands-down terrible, and I'm inclined to leave towards the end of August.

Here's the catch: I'm on a pretty thin budget. I'll earn about $1300 from writing before the month is over, and tend to earn between $1,000 and $2,000 per month from the same. During the summer, it's closer to the lower end of the spectrum, and I have a couple bills to pay from home, too.

That's more than enough for most places I want to go, but buying plane tickets can stretch me thing.

I have a flight to catch from Cairo to New Delhi on October 1st, and I want to spend at least 10-15 days in Egypt.

The options I'm mulling over are:

>visiting a friend in Moldova

I've found flights for $220 from Dar Es Salaam/Zanzibar to Dubai, and then $40 from Dubai to Romania. I can likely fly from Bucharest back to Cairo for $140, but I'm worried local transportation costs will add up (i.e., Bucharest to Moldova and then back, or Bucharest to Athens and fly to Cairo from there).

>flying to Egypt earlier

I wouldn't mind being there longer, but can I seriously entertain myself on a $20-$40 per day budget in Egypt for a month? I have friends I can stay with in Cairo for free, but I don't want to be a hassle to them for such a long while.

It's $280-$330 from either Dar or Zanzibar to Cairo. For some reason, Dar-Cairo flights connect in Zanzibar anyway.

I want to see mainland Tanzania, but safaris and park fees are monstrous ($600+ for the Serengeti, $150-$200 for Ngorongoro)

>adventure

I'd love to go overland through Kenya and Sudan to Egypt, but I'm not sure whether that route is safely viable. My friend here in Zanzibar has told me that Kenya is quite unsafe; I'm also not well-informed about Sudan, although I remember an Anon from /trv/ riding an ore train or something there a while ago.

I'm also nervous about doing things like hitchhiking or train-hopping with my laptop, which enables me to work abroad conveniently compared to Internet cafes.

>other options

Does /trv/ have any recommendations? I was initially hoping to do Zanzibar-Mainland-Zambia-Ethiopia-Egypt, but the flights are a lot more expensive than I thought. It's $100 to Zambia from Dar, $250 from Lusaka to Addis Ababa, and then another $250 to Cairo from there, not factoring in visas.

I'm trying to buy my return ticket from Delhi to Mexico by August 15, which will run $400 out of pocket.

Sorry for the long post - just wanted to explain my circumstances and considerations thoroughly.

Any insight on Kenya or recommendations for cool routes which won't break the bank are welcomed.

Dunno how much the travel costs will be. I do the "nomad" thing a bit as well. I would consider getting a cheap ticket to South Africa. 500 bucks a month will get you a flat in a safer area of Cape Town with decent internet.
Rwanda is supposed to have decent internet and is seriously underrated. You can also do overland from there to Ethiopia for a bit, then a short flight to Cairo.

Swaziland might be another option unless internet speed is essential.

I too am scared of losing my computer. However, I carry a separate external hard-drive at all time elsewhere in luggage. If I get robbed, I can easily get another $200 lappy and keep on working. If your files are small (docs are small) you could just use the cloud.

I considered flying to South Africa.

Unfortunately, the flights from there to Cairo are even more expensive than from Tanzania or Ethiopia. I believe the last I checked SkyScanner, the cheapest offering was $400-500.

Kigali to Cairo was also a little pricey, if I'm remembering correctly. Trying to hop on SkyScanner to check, but the connection here is bugging out a bit.

Thanks for the recommendations, though.

More or less, I'm just trying to get to Cairo by mid-September without sitting around in the village until then.

I'm saving a bit of money being here, but I don't want to get fugged by all the plane tickets I need to buy.

Once I get India-Mexico taken care of, I don't care as much, since if I run out of money, I can just chill around the hostel for a couple days eating cheap shit until I get paid again (I have one contract that pays almost $1k per month, and the direct deposit is very, very reliable).

Oh - Kigalo to Cairo just loaded. Fucking $450+. I guess there must not be much demand for Intra-Africa flights, because this shit is expensive.

What are the best and worst countries or cities to go travelling solo?
5 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>

OP here

Best in general would be places where it's easy to be anonymous (Japan), where you are likely to run into other solo travellers, mainly places that are slightly obscure (Iran, India)

The hardest places are those that attract groups of friends traveling together, because it's harder to meet people. Europe for example.
>>
Wut. Soloing in Europe is the best. Stay in hostels, meet other travelers.
>>
>>1282606
This is fair.

I live in Japan so I can't comment myself, but one of my friends from the USA came out here for 3 months and traveled the country. He really had a blast and he was able to meet up with other travelers and expats in each of the cities he visited. Based on his experiences I recommend it.

I also personally have experience going to Nara solo (currently living and holding down a permanent position in Tokyo.) for an internship. Nara is excellent because you don't get so much of the Japanese cramped-ness, you're within spitting distance of Osaka, Kobe, and Kyoto (fun day trips, concerts, etc), and Nara itself has a lot of cool history.

In's Point in Kowloon is a crazy multi floored toy/collectibles place. Even if you don't like pop culture/Japanese tv, it's worth seeing, as all the stock is stacked floor to ceiling, each stall is some tiny glass box owned by a different person.

I'm not going to college till spring. Since i'll have all of fall/winter free and money saved I would like to travel. Hopefully all 6ish months. One of my co-workers suggested Vietnam cus going during the dry season would be best. Doing the math I can probably live in the city pretty comfy for that time. Just wondering if there is any places I should live instead with a similar cost of living.

New to /trv/ but this looks slow as heck thank in advance

So i'm planning my first holiday with my friends, hopefully going next summer. We're thinking the Mediterranean since we're from the U.K. and it's close. What we're sort of looking for is a mixture of beaches and a good amount of nightlife, but nothing like Ibiza or Aiya Napa, since they're usually filled with utter dregs.

Sorry if we're sounding too vague, we'd rather go with relaxation over full partying, but it doesn't hurt to go somewhere where a lot of other (preferably female) tourists go too. I'd personally love Rome and those sort of places, but my mates would prefer somewhere coastal, which is fine.

Hey, i don't know how to start this but i want to change my life. im a fat fuck, who works as a graphic designer and mostly i just sit at home mastubating. I started to live more conscious and healthier.

anyway i want to start making drastic changes in my life and i want to see the northern lights either from norway or island and discover the nature there. I never moved much apart from the sofa to the kitchen so im new to this. Are there any beginner guids or tips you can give me? I would love to hike aswell for a while to see something of this world.

Help is really appreciated. I dont know nothing about traveling alone.

just some random tips:

check if your passport is valid for at least 6 more months.

google if you need a visa or not. (i assume you're from "the west" so will not need visa for norway)

you're probably starting planning at the best time if you're interested in the northern lights. it's gonna be cold then, so check if you have all the clothes you'll need. (but in general, do not worry, you can always buy whatever you need while on the road.)

plane tickets are generally the cheapest 4-3 months before your departure date.

hiking is awesome, you're gonna love it. don't even think of starting in abroad, though, go on short hikes on the weekends at home already.

traveling alone is the easiest in the sense that you don't have to constantly check with others, so no one to mess with your plans.

norway looks really really nice, good choice.
>>
heads up for norway being the most expensive of all the nordic countries by far

if you want northern lights i would suggest northern sweden or iceland instead

iceland has some pretty nice nightlife that attracts tourists from all across the globe, whereas the swedish north is excellent for hiking

If you're 'Murrican, consider Alaska. It will be a lot easier to get to than Norway. You could even drive most of the way if you want.

So I'm in Moscow this week, can /trv/ recommend interesting things to see and do that aren't precisely the most typical tourist attractions? Can also be day trips, I'm here with a local, so non-foreigner-friendly stuff is fine too, desu

You wanna get a beer tomorrow night? Or something more lewd? My friends left and I'm a bit bored. I'm here till Friday and I'd kill for a spliff

Going to Pooland tomorrow
What visit?

So far I have dis:

''Lazienki Krolewskie
Zlote Tarasy - that's a shopping centre
Palac Kultury
barbakany, the statue of the mermaid near the vistula river, the former jewish quarter, the jewish cementery
Do NOT go to Southern Prague (that is a district in Warsaw, also called the square of death). You migh get your money stolen or attacked and beaten just for the heck of it.
Krakowskie Przedmiescie (you can go that way from the palm tree to the city center and on the way feel free to spit for me on The Polish Academy of Science on the left, and on the Potocki Palace)''

Warsaw is not a great travel destination. Its architecture is soviet and dull, except for the old town, which has been rebuilt from the ashes after WW2.
You know what's great there? Women. Consider going to a strip club in the evening -- with a couple bros preferrably. For very little zlotys you'll have unlimited beer and see goddesses dance and speak to you. I was struck by the beauty of those girls.

They say Gdansk is where its at if you want to do regular tourism.

Going back home from one country abroad - limited to two suitcases each and maybe a third we are willing to shell out $250USD for that priviledge. Carry ons is for anything important.

How do you decide what goes home, and what needs to be tossed for good, sold, etc.

Any advice from someone whos been through this, I got less than 30 days to clear out this apartment.

I put ads out for my furniture at really low prices, but the culture here is - buy new, toss out when it gets old. I guess I got the old shit, because not even a used store wants this stuff.

Lived in SoKo for 5 years and then headed back to Canada. I sold off a ton of my stuff online to the local expat community. Furniture, etc. I ended up having to junk a ton of it though as Koreans are not really into the second hand stuff. I shipped a couple of boxes home to my self on the slow ground shipping route. It cost like $100 bucks, but was worth it to get clothes, documents, momentos back. I shipped that a couple of months in advance and it arrived with in like a week of when I arrived back in Canada. It cut down big time on the amount of luggage which was nice. My basic rule was if I can get the same thing at home, then get rid of it. I also went through a lot of stuff and just considered how much it really meant to me. Sorted it in piles of ABSOLUTELY to Meh to Bin it.
>>
I took regular trips to second hand book shops. Whatever I could not sell I donated. I only kept a few pieces that I knew I could not find again.
I also gave 90% of my wardrobe to charity. Shoes were the heaviest obviously. I only kept the really sturdy pieces and special clothing like ski clothing, bike clothes, etc.
Furniture I try to sell to my landlord. As that failed, I gave away all of it. I could not be bothered to organize transportation, so I just put it up online, and people came by with their cars/rental vans.
Whatever people did not take by car, I brought to the nearby recycling plant. Luckily they also have a charity shop section where you can leave anything that isn't complete trash, so nothing went to waste.
I had a business class ticket for the move, but even so I sent one box via post for myself, it had all the random small kitchen stuff and souvenirs that I collected during travels and I knew would not need during the first couple of weeks after arrival.

It's weird, I honestly feel bad that nobody will take this stuff and it will end up at the garbage dump.
Minimalism is looking better and better... 10 pairs of shorts that look nearly the same, tshirts that I can replace, a billion pairs of socks, holy shit. Every flight I went home over these 6 years.. I hit up walmart and bought shit to bring here.. and now.. in the trash it goes.

Hello, I went on a road trip taking the state route 1, I'm driving to the south already and about to leave Monterey Bay, anybody interested in meeting at some point of the trip? I'll keep driving through the State Route 1 for a few days.

ive been interrailing for 5 days so far and have 25 more to go. but i have an empty week coming up soo i have to fill with something

heres my idea: stay in a youth hostel somewhere for one week and just sit in a park/nice place every day trying to do shitty paintings of my surroundings, then maybe hitting up a gay bar in the evening

no sightseeing, no walking tours no "experiences", just me loafing around in a pretty park and killing time on me tod

What Western European city would be best for that? It needs to have pretty areas, be safe, and have a decent gay nightlife.

(Not London, thats where I usually live)
