hm, i had a blast in Georgetown alone.
There is a lot of great food and plenty of history and culture to explore. So find someone on couchsurfing or at a hostel to spend some time with. 1 week at the most though, gets boring after a while, like most places.
>>
go check out the national park on the northwest corner of the island. Good swimming and the little fishing village beside it has some really good eats. Arrange a boat from there to Langkawi or up to Ko Lipe if you get bored.

I'm taking a business seminar through my university in Bucharest. I've been through Western Europe but have never made it that far east.

Can anyone tell me what to expect? I just imagine the Ceaucescu years. How much have things improved since then?

Is the beer cheap? I'm not looking for prostitutes but how difficult is it to maybe find a date while I'm there?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Hey /trv/,
First anniversary is coming up, the wife and I have always had a desire to visit South America, and my Chilean neighbors have been telling me to check out their homeland.

Any advice for visiting Santiago? We are 2 burgers who speak english, french, italian between us, and really shitty NYC/mexican spanglish

Specifics:
- Is English or shitty spanish passable in the major cities?
- Does anything interesting happen in Santiago on New Years Eve?
- Should we be looking at Santiago? or is there a better destination within a bus trip from the airport?
- Should we just forget about it and go to Buenos Aires instead?

We're looking at the time around New Years, 29th Dec to 4th Jan or so.

Thank you in advance for any opinions.

You should go to Viña del Mar, it's 2 hours by car from Santiago and has so.e of the best fireworks in Chile on new year.
>>
Hey
1) I was a portuguese speaker only and did quite weel in Santiago and Viña del Mar, so shitty spanish may go well.
3) I fyou are going in summer definitely would go to Vinã del Mar, Santiago is a big city wiht not much things to see.
4) I went to Buenos Aires too, and i found it better, there was more things to do, cheaper, and you can go to Montevideo for a day trip,
Santiago is nice, cool city, but is far from amazing. After 3 days you probably will be bored

I've been in Dalmatia a dozen times, there's always an arcade somewhere in the coastal towns, but only during the summer. It usually costs what's an equivalent to half a euro per token. 3 for the price of 1 euro equivalent is also accepted. But I tell you right now, most of them are usually old SEGA arcade systems sent on a bargain from Germany or something. Just watch it when you're choosing, some of them are a bit defective without proper guidance.

My partner recently got a job in New Zealand and I'm looking to travel there to join her for a year or two. How the hell do I get work in this country? It seems like the only visa I'm eligible for is a "Working Holiday" visa, and with that you can't apply for "permanent jobs". What does that even mean? Aren't all jobs technically possibly permanent?

>>
>>1283013

In NZ & Australia jobs are categorised by being casual, permanent, or contract.

The hours are classified as full time or part time. Most people on working holidays in either country can expect to get part time casual hours = higher pay rates but no benefits ie sick leave or holiday pay. Permanent jobs require the employer to provide for sick/long service/maternity/bereavement etc leave as well as paid vacation, plus they have to contribute to the superannuation/pension fund.

Be aware though, NZ is flooded with unskilled labour from the Pacific Islands, as well as there being a shit ton of Indians & Asian immigrants who perform most of the menial or low paid tasks, so unless you've got a degree or experience in a particular industry it will be tough competition. The immigration website for NZ will have all the info you need.
>>
>>1283030
Awesome, super helpful.
Do you (or anyone) know if the visa starts when I receive it or when I actually enter the country. .
>>
DON'T tell NZ immigration that your partner has a permanent job. They'll get suspicious about whether you'll be tempted to overstay your visa.
As far as they're concerned, you're there to make money and have fun.

So I'm planning this trip to S.E.A. and part of that trip goes through Vietnam. The problem is most of the websites I go to only have the options of arriving at the airport when I'm crossing a land boarder in Cao Tho.

General question inspired by OP's question.

If you know you are going to need a visa, is there ever any real reason not to go ahead and get it before you start traveling, assuming you have time for that option?

If you are not sure you'll be going to Copuntry X, then yeah, but in cases where you know what your plan is...
>>
>>1283007
Well I would like to get it before I start buying my plain tickets. This trip isn't until January.

Apologies if this is against board culture or rules, I don't post here very often. No hard feelings if the thread gets deleted.

I'm wondering where I should live. Nearing the end of my debt finally and considering moving out of the house for the first time in my life. Some things to consider:
>I don't have any real skills, all I have is experience as a Hotel Night Auditor, so I'd probably end up doing that and not making much more than minimum wage
>no need for any utilities other than the necessities + internet (which is as cheap and fast as possible, do not want Comcast)
>don't go out pretty much ever; nightlife is a non-factor
>likewise I barely spend time with friends or family anymore, no need to be close by
>cook most of my own food so a good grocery store is essential and good restaurants are not
>love me a cold, snowy winter
>low taxes and other cost of living factors are obviously a major plus

Currently I live in Rochester NY, looking into Maine or Oregon right now, but I'd love some suggestions for the more experienced.

If you want cold, tough. Move to Russia.

If your from the land of burgers, move to Mexico or anywhere in South America.

I say Mexico because I'm familiar with it. It's a great place to live with a very low cost of living and comparatively high infrastructure (internet etc). You can probably find yourself a one bedroom for $300 usd. Food is amazing, and if you want to buy shit there are literally tons of open air markets where you can buy ingredients for pennies.
Taxes? What's that? If you don't what nightlife but still want to fuck, there is beyond easy access to cheap prostitutes (~$60/hr)
Medical care is given to all legal residents. Its pretty ez to live in Mexico.
>>
I'm at a similar point - only many years later in life.

Can't stand this cess pit of NYC that I've been in the last 20 years. The US is just on a road to nowhere.

Been thinking about Mexico or Spain.

Would love to live in Japan - but don't know how I'd get any work :)

Hey guys, I have to drive to Utah for a wedding, I only recently moved to Albuquerque (1 week ago) so I don't know the finer details of the mid-west. The drive is 9 hours, which I'm sure I can do no problem, but my question is in case I get too tired; what are some good places to stop around Utah/Colorado? I might stop by a dispensary in Colorado, a place called the Doobie Sisters. Will I get fucked by the law crossing over state lines? I would imagine they would want to search my vehicle, they just happen to want to pull me over, but they don't bring dogs over do they?

I'm 22 and bailing on my shit tier 9-to-5 day job to travel between volunteering sites, mainly via the WWOOF scheme.

If any of you have done stuff like this before, it'd be cool to hear your experiences/stories/advice as I'm new to this and hope to be doing this for a while.

I've volunteered in Portugal for a month back in 2013, but have no experience aside from that.

Would you recommend volunteering in non-English speaking countries?

Is it realistic to expect that the only cost is travelling between sites?

Where/what kind of volunteering would you recommend?

Where are you from ?
The most painful part of this kind of travel is all the visa administrative trouble. I've never tried it myself but when I was WWOOFing I met this German guy who was doing this (in Russia) and he told me that it was hard to get visas for foreign countries when you are yourself in a foreign country and you have little to no access to Internet or your embassy (wwoofing is usually far into countryside). For example he wanted to go to Malaysia next (or somewhere in SEA I don't remember) but he had trouble with getting a visa
So my advice would be to check the list of countries where your countrymen don't need a visa or have a 30/90 days stay with no-visa and target those.
Otherwise it is perfectly feasible, some people go from place to place, other make rotations between 2, 3 or 4 places, it is pretty common for wwoofers in Schengen space
>>
>>1283347
I'm from the UK. To be fair, I'm thinking of doing it in the UK for the first couple of months before moving on to other countries.

Are visas that challenging to apply for if you don't intend to do paid work?

Good advice though, thanks. What was your WWOOFing experience like?
