Lost a lot, was scraping the bottom of the barrel for 3 years in Berlin. The little money I had after rent I usually spent on drugs. Had a budget of a few euros per week for food.
>>
>>1204723
Lost weight. Went to Thailand, walked around alot, ate local food, aye on average once a day, drank a lot of Hong Tong and had about week of liquid shits my second or third week there

Lived in a hostle in NZ for 3 months, all money was spent on beer and lived off free mandarins and the odd BBQ. Lost loads of weight.

Next roadtrip to Norway is up for August '17, please give me some inpsiration for what to visit :)
Will start in Oslo, not much higher than Lofoten und from there on back.

Been in Norway quite a few times, but this time I got 3 Weeks to spare.

where have you visited already? I don't know about must-see places, sorry.

I had a short trip for the first time to Oslo and Bergen earlier this month, so interested in visiting in the summer, it's such a beautiful country. I'll come with you if you think you're lacking in a stranger-travel companion at all

I'm leaving the USA for the first time (besides Canada) and I'm going to London.

How dangerous is it? Where are the no go sharia zones to avoid?

Is visiting the Big Ben safe?

Ever since the refugee crisis, London is basically a no go area. There are literally Sharia gangs roaming the street who will confiscate your alcohol and even beat you up if you don't have a long enough beard. Don't even think of bringing a girl here btw, if you let her out your sight for a second the rape gangs will kidnap her and take her to the great mosque. Oh and we don't call it Big Ben anymore, it's Great Muhammad. Honestly just stay in America, it's safer
>>
>>1204593
Yep. And that's just the start. I thought it was bad in the UK, then I was forcibly circumcised and converted when I took the Dhow to Gothenburg.

I need to kill about 9 hours in San Diego this Friday while my friends are at work, or stay locked in their house until they get home. Normally I'd just find a beach bar and day drink and eat seafood, but I don't want to start drinking at 8 AM, since I'm pretty sure nothing will be open anyways, and we're supposed to hang out Friday night.

I'll have access to a car. Any suggestions?

San Diegan for 12 years here.

If you want to do something _cool_, go to the zoo.

Otherwise, just find breakfast, go to the beach, chill, smoke some weed, etc.

This, the Zoo is part of a complex of open areas and museums called Balboa Park, there are loads of museums, you could spend the whole afternoon there. If any time is left over you could head over to the Embarcadero.

What's the better city for a four day vacation in February: Charleston, South Carolina, or New Orleans? I'm going to do a trip with a buddy and both seem worth doing. Charleston has been topping some travel lists online, but New Orleans is obviously legendary as well.

Charleston for the beach, new orleans for literally everything else. You decide
>>
>>1204365
I know the food and music in New Orleans will be amazing. Will there be stuff to do besides the stereotypical party stuff though? Like I know Charleston is supposed to have some phenomenal traditional southern architecture and plantation tours and stuff.
>>
>>1204366
You can do that in New Orleans, too. Maybe find a swamp tour and some plantations to visit.
Probably hit up hipster college spots, too. I live in Louisiana and I always appreciated all the small music stores. You'll find a lot to do in just 4 days, longer than that maybe not.

I really want to go and travel the world , but I'm 28 years old and I will feel like it would be suicide career wise. Like what type of work would I get after I come back.
Plus it's hard to come up with enough money to travel the world. Most people agree it would cost about 20k for a 1 year travel and I only have 8k (use to be more but had some emergencies recent months) and it's super hard to save money when I pay so much for rent and other needs. I've been literally starving myself to save money. I just don't know. Can someone shed some guidance and good knowledge for me.

1. Do you actually have a career? It sounds like you have a job. You can quit jobs.

2. Plan your route carefully and take advantage of free services like couch surfing, etc.
Find some efficient portable base nutrition to always have on you. You have more time than money, so use your time.
>>
>>1204251
>1. Do you actually have a career? It sounds like you have a job. You can quit jobs.

It's a decent stable paying job that has federal benefits. I meant career suicide in that if I travel for a year, I'm not going to be able to get the decent career job I have now again.
>>
>>1204248
So far as the money thing goes you can always work for periods of the travel and use the base country as a way to explore the surrounding areas. Travelling for a year straight is a bit shit anyway, you'd be surprised how samey it gets after the third or fourth month. Having that element of stability can be great and actually lets you experience a country properly too and build links there.

Only you can tell yourself whether you can get a job when you get back. I teach Maths which is in pretty high demand so it wasn't an issue for me but you know your situation best.

If something's is grossly not as described just go through Support.

The one time I had to use them they came through for me and I got my money back and then some.

Host is probably butt-raped by them, though.

but you don't know that until you actually rent it and go and stay at the place right?

i've seen a couple offers which look great but the pictures are taken straight out of a decoration catalog

>how common is airbnb fraud? how do you know if you can trust the person making the add?
I guess use your gut. If the pictures seem too good to be true for the price, then use your buyer beware instincts to skip it. If you read the reviews and they aren't by typical travelers with long resumes of ratings, hrm, might be friends who posted.

The fraud that airbnb might have is not being met by the messenger person with the key, where they can act like you never showed up and not take the blame.

When it comes to hotels, I typically look at user photos and stare intently at the bathroom pics, the concave nature of a mattress, the initial bedspread low quality of the linens and think about myself there. Hotel photos are usually bait and switch, but users who typed a review are typically pissed, and even 6 months of wear and tear in a hotel might be too much time to trust recent renovations.

I see airbnb as a good way to get time at an investment condo out of season for a high priced area, but for a room? No. Safety reasons that someone else has the key and you're alone there.

Americans can't into hostels. This is why our brightest minds invented Airbnb and valued the novel idea at 1,000,000,000 dollars.

Is there anyone here who has experience with Schengen Area travelling, specifically to Spain?

I am from a country that's not in the EU, Bosnia and Herzegovina, but apparently has an agreement for visa-free travel. I've been reading some rules and it's all so confusing. According to the rules I'm allowed to stay for 90 days without a visa. Is that true? There are also some[1] entry requirements for Spain and those are giving me reasons to worry.

It says that they require either an invitation letter or a return-ticket. I think I can show them a return ticket, but there's also a requirement to have money available to you.
Question: do they really check that and what happens if I don't have enough money on me? How likely are they to deny me entry if I just want to stay for a few weeks at a friend's place?

I know I would be better off asking the Spanish consulate in my country, but I reckon I can get some insight here first.

I'm from a Schengen country so I don't have first hand experience. But from what I know, if you are from one of the visa free countries, you should not have trouble. Make sure you have a return ticket. Also have as much of your plans printed as possible. You might be stamped through with no questions, or they might ask you a few if they are not convinced you will not stay illegally. Just don't look like a bum who will attempt to jump and stay in Europe.

Just don't overstay. That will land you into trouble.
>>
>>1203620

Thank you for the somewhat encouraging words.

>Also have as much of your plans printed as possible.
What kind of plans were you thinking of? Because I don't think I have anything which would constitute as a plan, since I'm just privately visiting a good "friend".
I have also wondered how do they check if you have enough money for your stay? I surely won't bring much cash, so how can they tell how much I have in my account? Would a recent bank statement (few days old) be needed or can I just show them my credit card? Do they really require you to have the mentioned minimum of 580€? What would happen if I told them I'd stay for a month, but didn't have enough to cover the month but more than the minimum?

Sorry if these questions are stupid, but I'm seriously worried about being denied entry and becoming stranded at the airport. Especially since I have never travelled outside of my own country before.
>>
>>1203645
You need to have a clear way of showing you're not going to overstay and will have the means to support yourself while inside Schengen. If you're staying with a friend, have his name and contact details handy. If you can easily get a recent bank statement printed, then it wouldn't hurt to have one. All that being said, it's better to be overprepared. In actuality you most likely won't have any problems, especially if you're entering Schengen via Spain. It's very possible you will be stamped through with no questions. In the worst case, having everything documented as best you can help and being honest about it.

Where is the best place for a solo beginner to go? I've been to Italy and India but I went with other people both times and I wasn't the one doing the bulk of the planning.

I don't want to go somewhere too westernised like Europe or America, I'd prefer somewhere that would give me a bit of a culture shock.
That said, since this would be my first time traveling alone, I don't want to go anywhere too dangerous.

I'm thinking more Asian countries but I'd only be going for a week or two so I don't know which would be more enjoyable.

Any recommendations?

Simple one would be Thailand or Vietnam.
Both have plenty of cheap flights, simple to navigate, you get around with english, cheap as fuck, offer nice stuff to see and do and are pretty safe
>there's a reason both are favs for "babys" first solo trip.

OP, do you want to go SCUBA diving, browse museums, get a rental car o your own and self-drive a vacation, do photography, meet people, dine alone when other people aren't...

For alone travel, I'd most of all encourage cities in US and Europe, honestly. It's the multitude of things to do that wandering alone gives you such freedom of choice.

I'm flying to Auckland on Feb 2, then traveling overland down to Dunedin, where I'll live for a year.

What's there to see and do in Auckland and Wellington in a day or two? Is there anything worth stopping to see in Christchurch? Any must-see locations between Auckland and Wellington that I should go out of my way to see on the way?

Go down via the West coast once you get to the South Island. Ferry from Wellington will get you to Picton then drive over to Greymouth/Hokitika then down through Franz Josef and Queenstown. Personally I wouldnt use up your time in any of the cities. Best NZ can offer is out away from civilisation. Dunedin's cool, lived on the South of there for a month. I guess you're there for Uni?
>>

Was just in Auckland a month ago. What are you looking to do?

I suggest going to the WETA cave in Wellington. It's not a real cave, it's a tourist gift shop that shows off all the best models, props and statues from WETA studios. They worked on Lord Of The Rings msot famously.
Go in and ask about the tour. It'll cost, but they take you around back to a warehouse where they keep a ton more props. Swords and armor, fake but extremely lifelike animals, I saw a full sized jeep from Halo when I went in there.

Even if you're not a movie buff, I still highly suggest it, if only to appreciate the stunning detail in professional movie props up close.

As for Auckland, going up the Skytower is the most I can suggest about the area.

Hey /trv/, has anyone here ever volunteered abroad?

I ask because I figured that it's a cheap way to see the world, as some volunteer groups will pay for lodging and food. What are some good organizations that allow this sort of thing? I don't really care where I go (for the most part) but I'd like to keep things as cheap as possible. Thanks /trv/.

>volunteered abroad
Don't do this.

You get paid shit, and you get sent to the worst places on Earth. It will open your eyes to how stupid third world people are though.

Instead, just teach English. Most cases your expenses are paid for, and you get much more spending money.

>Japan
works too much, but salary is very good
>Korea
good wages, but small country
>China
usually decent wages, large country, working hours few. This is the best for seeing the world
>Thailand/Viet
Very low wages, very low working times though
>India
They already "know English", so no. not here
>Europe
They usually dont pay for your housing, but still nice to see and decent wages.

Honestly, the best balance of cheap living, and max travel would come from teaching English in China, Thailand, or Vietnam.

Hey /trv/, I'm planning ~2 month trip to West Africa. Here's a rough plan of what I want to do

>fly into Mauritania, stay in Nouakchott a few days
>go up to Nouadhibou, take the iron ore train to Zouerat
>go on a camel trip with some nomads
>come back to the capital, take bus to Senegal
>stay in St Louis a few days
>see some nature reserves and national parks
>stay in Dakar for about a week, kick around the city and see the petite-cote
>continue into Guinea Bissau, stay in Banjul a while and take day trips to different nature reserves
>go from there back into Senegal, and see the Casamance delta

What do you think? Any suggestions on what else I should do? Would including Guinea Bissau be a good idea, and if so what would you recommend I do there? Thanks
