I am travelling to Tibet in less than a month.

Is there anyone who ever visited this country?
Any experiences?

I am mostly curious about the altitude sickness and the less oxygen. it is driving me crazy. I am trying to get in shape for several months now to be prepared but I am still very afraid that I will end up in a devastated hospital.

Also what about their food? So far when I was outside Europe in Turkey or in African countries I always had diarrhea.

Don't know more about Tibet than you do, but have experience with altitude sickness as I mountaineer when given the chance, so
>most people are fine until ~3000m - if you're unlucky first symptoms show up around 2500m
>if at all possible, go up slowly over the course of several days, acclimatisation is key
>climb high, sleep low
>drink a lot - prevents dehydration headache
>take it easy unless you like shortness of breath and massive headaches
>avoid Diamox, it hides dangerous symptoms and the sides are annoying
>simple painkiller against headache is fine
>again, drink a lot, maybe use oral rehydration salts
>read up on symptoms, learn to recognize dangerous ones
>go down if needed/possible

If you go from sea level to Lhasa directly, you will more than likely feel like shit for a week or so. Unless you're lucky, but there's no way of predicting that. Do continue getting in shape.
>>
>>1209538
Don't you need to be a part of a guided group to go there?
>>
>>1209686
Thank you for your experiences, that seems tough as hell. I hope I will manage somehow. As you said my group is travelling from China to Lhasa with a plane.

>>1209725
Yes we are going in a group, I just referred to myself as I because I don't even know my group yet.

How much prep do you do for traveling?

All my trips so far I've booked rooms and transport way in advance but it's a bit limiting. Meanwhile most of the people I've met traveling improvise and just arrive in a random city and book that day.

Specifically, I'm planning to go to Europe in May next year, hitting a couple major cities then staying in Poland for a few weeks before I hit a couple more major cities and go home. So should I a) book flights around Europe and hotels months in advance, b) arrive in my first city then wing it day by day while having a general idea where I might want to go, or c) something in between?

I tend to book way in advance and that prevented having a cool experience, but that was sort of a tense situation. I went in blindly in a dangerous zone and wanted to get to a safe haven asap. The dangers weren't as high as I thought and I met some cool people along the way I could've hanged out a lot more.

I'd recommend you keep it as loose as possible.

Do so by having hard entry/return dates regarding Europe, but travel within Europe is very easy. You can book plane tickets with budget airlines WEEKS in advance, rather than months.

Major cities aren't that far off and you could actually bus from Poland - Czech - Austria - Germany.

Booking in advance won't be that much cheaper anyway.
>>
Went to Italy Solo last January

I just went from city to city and booked whatever I found day before I arrived. Booking.com usually has some good deals for a day or two due to late cancellations so it can work out even cheaper.

I managed to find a great place by Firenze river for 50% off booking a day before. Obviously it will be more difficult on high season but if you're going then you will be spending more on everything else too.
>>
A lot. I don't really book in advance, though. Rather than booking in advance, I just read up on where I'm going, and when I think I know enough, I just read up some more. I also learn the very basics of every majority language I'm going to encounter.

Currently on exchange in Edinburgh, Scotland and am looking to rent a car with some buddies through the highlands. The problem is we're all under 25, and therefore renting a car is 5x cheaper. If anyone is over 25, in the area, and wants to help save money and make some friends just comment

When are you planning on it and how long should it take OP? Just got stationed in the U.K. but I'm a bit far south, and I don't have any leave yet (was saving it for another trip)

Any ideas of the itinerary?
>>
We're all here until late May and would like to go several times to be honest. If you have an available weekend between now and then we likely could make it work.

That's my problem, I probably won't until after then, closer to winter. Good luck though, and if you don't eat haggis and blood pudding you aren't a real traveler!

I'm visiting Barcelona tomorrow. What do? The information online is pretty overwhelming. Can I just wander around town and see most of the sights that way? I already booked the tickets for the Sagrada Familia. Anything else?

Barcelona is a pretty easy city to get around. The area around the Ramblas and Gothic Quarter is really walkable (but easy to get lost in). You'll need transit to Sagrada probably. How long are you going to be there?
>>
>>1211264
Three nights. I don't really like having a strict itinerary but I have one full day planned to visit the Sagrada and the Gaudi stuff in Eixample. One night I'll probably go out too, rest will be spent just wandering around and taking in the city which is what I love most.

Any ausfags here, I need some advise when it comes to traveling across Australia. What's the cheapest way to get from Darwin to Sydney without flying?
18 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Cheap flights are the best and cheapest option. But if you're not flying, try greyhound pioneer buses, try great southern rail for a train darwin to Adelaide then to sydney. Or worst case buy a cheap shit box and drive yourself
>>
Flying is down right the cheapest cause driving/taking a train with those distances will take a week or two on not slave master pace. Which means much higher costs for food and other things.

It's great to see the stuff inbetween but people forget Australia is the size of the US.

Cheers, I'm not too concerned about how long it takes, haven't been through there before so I wanted to see the country and didn't want to fly. Was considering hitch hiking if it came down to it.

try asking /g/ mate

consider the risk of damage/theft, I wouldn't use one in a western country because some junkie would try to steal it

maybe it's a fanciful notion, but would you be worried about police stopping you everywhere asking why you have a spy dish on your roof?

InterCity buses are the go. have used them before when my truck was broken down. Hitching is also popular and generally safe.

This, I bummed around NZ for six weeks using Newman's/Intercity. Aside from being a good way to get around, the drivers were all really friendly and gave good advice on fun things to see and do.

Hitchhiking is alright here, west coast, New Plymouth and Tauranga are decent.

Is 5 days in Bangkok too long?

Going with my girlfriend. I don't know if we should ditch early and catch a plane to phi phi or something, we are only planning to go to chiang mai for a few days after bangkok

>>1211433
I think so, you would have to fly to phuket and then get the boat over to phi phi. I don't know if I would do phi phi with a girlfriend, it's a party island. Koh samui is a nice couples island.
>>
>>1211433
There's plenty to do in Bangkok that you would not get to it all in 5 days. That said, thr pace of the city can be exhausting in 5 days. Personally, I'd shift more days to Chiang Mai. If this is ypur first trip to Thailand, 5 days is probably fine, but Bangkok is one of those places that after you have been there once you won't want to go back, vs the alternatives in Thailand. Closer beaches are Pattaya (Yes there is more than Walking Street and plenty of couples/family stuff. Hell, Thailand's largest water park is there). Koh Chang and Rayong, as well. Another suggestion is to book a day trip to Ayuttha while in Bangkok. Thailand's first capital, awesome temple ruins there. Plus the famous Buddha face tree
>>
>>1211514
Phuket ia good, as well. Surin Beach or Bangtao or something. You won't have to worry about any ferries.

First time traveling overseas out of America and Im looking to spend less than 2 grand during my 2 week stay in Iceland. Im going thr first two weeks of april.

Does anyone have any tips/ experiences they could share about their time in Iceland as this is my first really big venture I want to be able to do everthing on a budget.

Iceland is about as expensive as any other country in western Europe, however since everything worth seeing is innawoods, you're going to need special equipment to see it. This means either renting the equipment yourself or hiring a guided tour.

Tours are a little pricey but definitely worth it. I found a pretty good one that where we went ATVing up the side of the mountain and then went spelunking in a lava tube (about $300USD but totally worth it).

I would make it a point to splurge on just one of those adventure tours (as it is what Iceland is known for), however in order to save money the rest of the time, I would recommend checking out its Viking History sites. The first parliament in the world met out by a bunch of old rocks in the middle of nowhere. It's pretty awesome.

Also, read up on your Viking Lore (hagiographies as viking history in Iceland moved from oral tradition to written word only after Christianity was introduced). All of Iceland is littered with the sites mentioned in the sagas and it's an amazing experience to see the places after you've read up on it.

If you insist on staying only in Reykjavik, then you're definitely going to be spending a lot of money. Check out Bar8, they've got cheap beer, no one speaks English, and they have cool shit all over the walls/ceiling. If you're looking for something a little more touristy, right around the corner is the Big Lebowski Bar, another hidden gem.

$2k in 2 weeks is a pretty liberal budget if you're not including airfare in that. I think you'll have a pretty good time. Iceland is beautiful. You might not want to come home.
>>
Yea my round trip was only $300 with airfare.
Thank you for for your response, I havent loomed into any of those tours other than the golden circle bus tour, which idk if its worth.

Is there any way to find cheap places to stay? Around 20 per night would be ideal. Air bnb is what im looking at right now.
>>

Stay in a hostel, theres plenty around. That way you'll meet people and locals. Some hostels may even lay on a tour or excursion or a get-together in a local pub.

Hostels also tend to do breakfasts too, that way you keep your budget down and know your gonna get one square meal a day so you can spend more on activities.

Did anyone travelled the hungarian serbian boarder recently and could tell me if the checks are intensive or not ?

>>
>>1211883

Never been there. But considering there is a florishing drug and weapon trade from the ex-yugo to western europe i guess you should expect proper border checkings
>>
>>1211883
Went there last summer by train across the border, and the only thing that happened was they checked my passport and stamped it. But it all depends on where you're from.
>>
>>1211883
It depends. If you are white AND have an Schengen or US passport, they'll barely look at you.

If you fail to be white or fail to have a Schengen / Western European passport, but you still look well off, you might be okay.
If you are from the Balkans, you may or may not be okay depending on how poor you and your car looks like.
East Asian - fine.
Basically the worst is if you are poor Northern Sudanian black guy, Afghanistan, Syria, close enough, etc etc.

I don't think you have to prepare for anything special if you're privileged enough to be checking /trv/.

Do not attempt to smuggle anything like the locals do. If you have to ask around here, it means you will fail, and will fail miserably.

My best friend and I would like to go to Andalusia at the end of March. We've never been there and we found a dead cheap flight.
We'd be there for a week, will move by train/bus.

Any advice on places to visit, things to do, best ways to move around?

Thank you.

Who else likes going to a major city's cemeteries and seeing if there were notable people buried there?
Going to London Soon, plan on seeing Karl Marx's tomb
any stories?

This is the weirdest coincidence, I was planning on going down there and eating a big McDonald's in front of it for a laugh, but I have heard places like Milltown in NI have some cool graves of political prisoners. Graves that have regular visitors and offerings to them are pretty cool, desu
>>
Sort of related, when I lived in Seattle and friends visited I usually took them to see Bruce and Brandon Lee's graves.
>>
I like doing sort of the opposite. If I'm on the road and I need a break from driving I'll stop at little rundown cemeteries in the middle of nowhere and look at tombstones of people who have been otherwise forgotten.

There's just something about stopping in the Great Plains in winter in a cemetery with a half-collapsed chain-link fence and a couple of scraggly trees and reading the names and dates of a rundown town's history while the wind whistles through the tall grass.
