Im planning to go to budapest in early april. Im thinking one week, is that too much? For context I enjoyed spending a whole week in Prague. I loved hostel One Home in Prague, is their hostel in Budapest equally good?

Would also love to hear any experiences from Budapest, which districts are the coolest, which attractions, bars/restaurants/clubs you liked etc.

one week? you'll be in a fucking hurry if you want to spend everything Budapest has to offer into one week. Prague, I've got bored of it after three days, Budapest however will leave you wanting more and more after each day you spend there

for party hostels I'd suggest checking out The Hive, Grandio, Retox, and Extra

downtown Budapest is whatever districts the Nagykörút (Grand Boulevard) encloses - or more simply put, whatever's inside the circle of tramways 4-6
it has most of the city's pubs, party venues, restaurants, museums and landmarks, including the Parliament, the St. Stephen's Basilica, the Dohány street Synagogue, the Royal Palace, Matthias Church, Fisherman's Bastion, the Chain Bridge, Andrássy Avenue, Great Market Hall, the Opera House, Gellért Hill and the Citadel

sights outside the ring worth seeing are the City Park, the Budapest Zoo, the caves of Szemlőhegy and Pál-völgy, Elizabeth viewpoint, Kopaszi-dam, Aquincum, and the amphitheatre in Nagyszombati street

ps.: don't miss out on the many baths of Budapest
Gellért is the most beautiful, while the turkish Király, Veli Bej and Rudas are the most ancient ones
>>
>>1212246
for clubs, check out A38, Akvárium klub, Toldi Klub, Corvin Club, Doboz, Fogas Ház, Beat on the Brat, Instant, Morrison's 2, Szimpla, Gozsdu Courtyard, LARM and Hellobaby

as for pubs, Ellátókert, Élesztő, Csendes, Táskarádió and the ones on the Nagykörút should be on your target

and as far as restaurants go, I can safely recommend Kéhli, Momotaro Ramen, Fióka, Zing Burger, Tuning Burger, Black Cab Burger, Á la Maison Grand, Kiosk, Symbol, Hummus Bar, Pad Thai Wokbar, Arriba Taqueria, Rosenstein, Trófea All You Can Eat Buffet, Soulfood, Sunny Diner and Millenium da Pippo

If party hostel is your kind of thing then definitely look up Budapest Party Hostels, there's like four of them.
My favorite is Grandio, a bit grungy, but the staff are fun with good atmosphere.
Retox is pretty good as well.
If you haven't heard already, drugs are super illegal, so you can't be smoking weed like you might in Prague.
Hookers are pretty aggressive, too.

This guy's got most of the attractions I've seen and plenty more I haven't.
The only thing I might add is the House of Terror if history or museums are your thing.

So I want to go travel by myself for a week or two but I have absolutely no idea where to go. I don't have any experiece going alone and generally haven't travelled a lot.
What are some good cities for starters? Where the chance of getting mugged or being scammed like a fool are low?
I like "classical culture" if you know what I mean but I'd also be up for a trip to asia or whatever.
Also what the fuck do you even do when you travel alone.
tl;dr I don't know shit so go ahead and brag about your nicest and easiest trips.

If you can't even create a decent thread with enough useful information we can use to help, forget about traveling, stay in your mom's basement and KYS for the sake of humanity.
If you can't figure out what "useful information" is, double kys.

wow calm down there. I'm just asking for some neat places that a mere mortal like me can visit.
I know what is recommended in the hundreds of travel blogs and whatever but they are less interesting and realistic for me than stuff here. I've seen enough about Paris, London and Barcelona.

What would the the best travel option for my girlfriend and I if we have 10 - 14 days for travel.

We really love history, old towns, museums, small/quaint villages, etc. and don't care about nightlife.

It might also be cool to try a day or two of hiking outside if possible but that's not something we have tried before.

You can cross the Baltics and Poland in that time, visiting tons of small and old places. Just go between May and October, otherwise the weather will be grey and dull.

It's for Zurich but geneva is not much different as all the large swiss cities are pretty much the same, expect 120CHF per day for a not complete shit tier experience.

Don't spend more than a day in Geneva. There really isn't much at all. Instead, go to the mountains and smaller towns in Switzerland, they're far more interesting and fun.

Minsk. Apparently, Belarus recently lifted some provisions regarding their visa policies, making it cheaper to travel there.

You should be able to enter the country visa free by the 10th and can stay up to 5 days without needing to pay any fees.

I don't know whether or not this only applies to those flying in or not. This is probably the best chance for people to visit the country in a long while.

Belarus is pretty boring IMO. if it were me I'd fly to Istanbul as it would be 100% different culturally and it is one of the top cities in the world to visit.
>>
>>1210737
If it can only be one, Istanbul for sure and by far.
The vibe, the architecture, the food, the scenery, the hamams, I can go on... It's great.
All of them are great, but Istanbul has the most to offer I think.

But I mean, if you want to experience more of the Ukraine, that can be more fun, just getting shitfaced with the locals...

i actually envy people like that.
i'm the polar opposite. 'in which degree i should hold my left eyebrow when i ask for a second serving of x special food in nth back alley of y neighborhood, and which seat of which table is the best at 10.13am?'
luckily i have similar travel buddies, to we have an ongoing competition of who can come up with the most obscure cultural knowledge and most useless and edgy travel tips, i don't know what i am going to do with my travel life if they get bored of researching.

most of those threads are just bait threads or people forgetting this board exists.

Personally I research my destinations and save a googledoc and throw it on my calendar for shit when I travel. That said, I don't always follow it to the dot, I generally have some hard set stuff I will do and wing it the rest, sometimes ask trv "hey I am here what is there to do" but generally will look for a thread relative to where I am.

I'm looking to drive to DC in March, and stay for a few days.
Aside from the overpriced capitol hill area, what's a cheap place to stay for a few days? Preferably something under $100 a night? Arlington?
22 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
Capitol Skyline is 69 dollars a night and right bt Capitol Hill. Caveat, parking is 30 per night but you might be able to get free parking with with your reservation.

I stayed there and would recommend.
>>
>>1208132
I was in DC for New Years and was slumming it north of The Mall. There is a weird warehouse area north of the Capitol building where Massachusetts Ave dumps you South-Easterly. There is a multi-story Walmart(?!) and it's sort of close to Union Station with trains and buses. I do recall seeing gym equipment in a 2nd floor window and some hotel stuff over there but it stopped when we hit the satellite law school (Georgetown?) buildings. It sounds like what >>1208134 is talking about.

There are some shitty hotels due north of the Washington Monument which are contrasted by a very new Holiday Inn and a Whole Foods. These are in your price range but I didn't notice parking.
I picked up some friends in NYC and we took the bus but imagine that guaranteed parking is going to be expensive since there are almost no parking garages in walking distance to the tourist stuff. Whatever you save in free parking you'll pay in taxi/ride-hailing fees.

Never made it to moneyed areas but the Georgetown area predates DC and it's near an elite university so I'm thinking narrow streets, brownstones, no parking and overpriced sushi.

I went to a wedding in DC a few years ago and crashed on a sofa in Crystal City, VA. The commuter stops outside of DC are cheaper but you are committing to 12 hours with only a park bench or coffee shop for a rest and full engagement in nightlife would be doubtful.
>>
>>1208138
Is parking really that much of an issue? So am I better off trying to find a place as close to the Mall as possible so I dont have to drive from place to place?

Hey /trv/, anyone have any experience visiting or living/lives in a major city in eastern Europe (preferably within the EU)? Looking for somewhere for a nice 3 or 4 night holiday for me and my girlfriend who both work minimum wage jobs and dont want to break the bank on somewhere like Paris or Barcelona. From what I can see Sofia seems to be cheapest in regards to plane tickets and hotel accomadation but not sure how scenic it is a city or how much there is to do there, anyone been there before?

Open minded to visiting anywhere in the region, would just value a bit of first hand experience from people who've spent some time there. Thanks

dont go to Poland, biggest cities here have not much to offer and look nasty in winter.
unless you are interested in learning the everyday life of ppl here.
>>
i have been to all of eastern europe's capitals, and many of the larger cities. give me 3 bullet points of what you're interested in.

i personally love kiev, super cheap (easy to get a meal in a good restaurant for €2-4), interesting history, hardly any tourists.

depends on what you're looking for. baltic old towns? grilled meat? seaside? castles? commie stuff?

a word on sofia - it's a really average city i thought, nothing particularly sticks out. there's not really anything of note. Plovdiv (also in Bulgaria) however I thought was a very nice place, cozy old town.
>>
>>1213002
i'll give you some pointers to my fav cities in eastern europe...

*bucharest - super cool, strange place. has one of the largest buildings in the world. interesting contrasts, some wonderful architecture, but absolutely living history. good food. easy day trips into the mountains (see a castle, for instance), or go to the seaside
*skopje
also a cool place in the summer, unbearably hot, but there's a canyon nearby and hiking there is just wonderful, just a great place to spend 3 days and wander around. very cheap
* serbia
nothing better than hanging out on the danube on summer nights. 20th century aficionados will love new belgrade, the huuuuge commie district built on the other side of the river from the old town. amazing food - eat some pljeskavica from a butcher. you'll want it again and again

vilnius + kaunas are also pretty cool, esp if you venture out of old town vilnius you see some strange stuff. vilnius old town is super beautiful though.

i also liked minsk but realise that its not as easy to budget travel there because of no cheap flights, and i think the visa still costs money

i've disregarded budapest krakow and prague for now because those are well known and very touristy

warsaw is also OK i guess

odessa is a total hidden gem but theres no cheap flights, absolutely amazing city though

sarajevo is cool too

Cheap drugs and alcohol, supposedly beatuiful and willing girls, but I was not lucky (even though generally I easily pulled girls in South America).

Was there last August for a few days before going to San Andrés.

Medellín is super fun. Cheap. And yes the girls are fucking gorgeous. Hooked up with 3 in the 5 nights I was there.

If you are going to Colombia. You must to to Medellín, Cartagena, Cali And San Andrés. Also check out rain forest if you aren't a pussy and go to the cafeteria zone.

Me and my friend are flying into Marrakesh on the evening of the 19th and flying out from Fez on the 23rd, also in the evening.

We're a bit unsure of how to spend the limited time we have there. We're thinking of spending the 20th in Marrakesh and 23rd in Fez (arriving on the 22nd in the evening), but we're unsure about the 21st and 22nd.

We have a few ideas:

>spend extra time in Marrakesh and Fez
>go to Casablanca and/or Rabat
>spend 2 days getting to Fez hitchhiking through Errachida (on the map)

The last option seems the most interesting, I saw some amazing views on Google Earth looking at the Sahara area of Morocco and it would be cool to experience the country outside of the big cities, but I'm not sure if two days would be enough for this as it's about 850km to get to Fez through Errachida. I'm considering maybe taking a bus instead of hitching but I'm unsure about the costs, we're trying to keep them low.

General and hitchhiking Morocco tips are appreciated.

Thanks

3 days is not a lot, really, not at all, you should reduce the number of locations, unless you want to experience Morocco through the window of a bus/car.

I recommend you just visit Marrakesh and Fez, maybe do an hour-two day stop at a smaller town/village en route, there's bound to be some interesting historical little place...
>>
>>1212320
>>go to Casablanca and/or Raba

Go to Rabat over Casablanca any day. I went to Casablanca a few years ago and thought it was by far the ugliest city out of any of the places I went in Morocco. Fez was probably my favourite place, by the way
>>
Thanks for the replies.

What would you recommend as a way from getting to Fez from Marrakesh that would allow us to get there without too much hassle, yet be able to see some interesting things along the way that aren't only big cities? I'm worried the road through Casablanca or Rabat is the only good one and any other way to Fez will be a hassle, but I'm not sure about how the road situation looks in Morocco. We definitely want to hitchhike.

Depends as each country has its own regulations. Some things may affect whether or not you can apply for one. Like are you under a certain age? Did you live in Germany for a certain amount of years? Etc

I dont really know why you're asking here instead of checking your German embassy and see what the passport application conditions are.
