As the title says, I have 2 weeks of vacation reserved in March and want to travel to Eastern Europe. American, male, 24, traveling solo. I'm not necessarily trying to squeeze in as many places as possible, aiming for like 2 or 3 cities. I have cash to spare, so finances are not an issue. Where do you guys recommend going for the optimal experience? I'm mulling over Budapest and Hungary at the moment.

Budapest is the capital of Hungary

If you're looking to do bigger cities Budapest is a good choice. I'd avoid Prague in summer because there's so many tourists. Bratislava is an interesting place as is Krakow in Poland. Definitely avoid Bucharest. It depends a lot on what you want to do.

Hey /trv/

I'm planning on doing a ~3 week long roadtrip with some friends in late August/ mid September from Montreal to the South West to see Arizona and New Mexico via the Pacific NW.
The car has already been secured and is in good condition.
We would be staying maximum 2 days in any given city, and are willing to tent out if need be.
Does anyone have any experience doing a roadtrip like this? If so, how much (ballpark) did you spend for gas and amenities for the trip?
At this point, we're three people, and we're thinking about $2500 per person for the three weeks of the trip.

Also, feel free to make any suggestions concerning the route we're taking.

Thanks in advance!

3 weeks isn't very long for this, you'll have to average at least 600km/day

conservative mileage of $1/10km would be $1200
budget wise you should be ok

bc highway 3 is more scenic than the tc for calgary-vancouver

seems kind of dumb to drive all the way to the pacific just to see vancouver and seattle, take 101 from seattle to san francisco and then I 70 to salt lake, that way you see the pacific, redwoods and lake tahoe

from el paso I'd do I-10 to florida and then 95 up to ny, dallas to cleaveland is a big corn field

careful crossing state lines, lots of cops with speedtraps, foreign plates exiting a state with recreational pot is a target for felony trafficking
>>
>>1222822
That's a lot of driving per day. Take turns, don't get hypnotized.
Get an oil change halfway through maybe.
Your funds should be good, you are looking at a hundred plus per person per day. Save on money by camping in the southwest, the weather is great that time of year, warm nights and the days aren't too hot.
Stop by arches national park, do the hike out past landscape arch, up onto the ridges. It's otherworldly.
If you have the time get off the I 70 and onto hwy 24 to the south of it to see capitol reef, goblin valley, and the north half of canyon lands. Also, how are you completely missing grand canyon?
In New Mexico I might suggest skipping El Paso and swinging a bit north to do Carlsbad caverns. If you go as far south as your current route goes you will deal with border patrol checkpoints.

The trans Canada highway can be pretty boring, but don't miss the the Icefields Parkway in Alberta. The Sea to Sky Highway north of Vancouver is a must-see, as well. I've driven across Canada and didn't realize how long it'd take to cross Ontario, it honestly felt like half the trip. Seattle and Portland are pretty gay, but both are in two of the most beautiful states in the country (I'd say Utah is the most beautiful, but it doesn't have a coast or any lush rainforests like the PNW). You obviously have to visit the Pacific coast somewhere, either Olympic NP west of Seattle or Astoria in Oregon or somewhere.

If you must, I84 on the border of Wash/Oregon is pretty scenic, but stop at the waterfalls at least. Otherwise, I'd suggest avoid the slog that is I84 from Portland to Salt Lake City and instead take a mountain pass into central Oregon and to Crater Lake, and then 97 south, or you could take 20 east all the way to Burns and see Steens Mountain before going on to take I80 in Nevada east over the salt flats to Salt Lake, and then the 5 national parks in Utah. Arches is a definite must-see, hell, all the national parks are must-sees, but I particularly like Canyonlands/Arches.

I haven't been to the south, so I can't help you there. My map is just a real quick sketch up, like the other anon said, taking 101 along the length of the coast, or at least from Portland to SF, is a real trip. But that alone could take 4 or 5 days (and is probably close to 1000 miles). I'd honestly skip Arizona, NM, Texas, Arkansas, Tenn, Kentucky, etc. in favor of Wyoming, South Dakota, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Chicago, and then whatever else you want to see (NY?).

I think that's a very decent amount of money, especially for each person. If you're getting hotels in cities and drinking/eating out, well, it can sure go quick. But, I get away with trips that edge on 3000 miles for $500~600 or so, and I've driven across America at least 4 or 5 times at this point. Sorry for my wall of text.

>brother is usually cool but has horrible anxiety
>brother constantly bitching about money and how hes afraid of airplanes

what the fuck do I do to convince him to chill and just travel with me?

Hi /trv/!

I am thinking about going to Lisbon in the summer and I am hoping to rack up some recommendations from you guys.

My plan was to sample the local nightlife, from cozy restaurants and cafés to bars and nightclubs.

Also, I was wondering if there were any great beaches around Lisbon, or anything worth doing a daytrip for!

Oh also, how well do the portugese speak english?
>>
>>1222627
You're going to a country that doesn't speak english expecting them to cater to your language?
At least try and compromise with them I'm sure many people speak at least broken english but try to learn some basic Portuguese.
>>
>>1222627
>>1222621
You're a tourist, you can get along perfectly fine in English. Young people will speak it pretty well, too. The major beaches are in the south of the country, in the Algave region, but they attract a lot of package tourists from the UK and northern Europe in the summer.

So I want to go on my first solo travelling experience in SE Asia this summer. I don't want to be isolated but I'm not naturally attracted to being outgoing and partying. I'd rather be with a small group I can make friends with. I'm like an elderly person, but I'm 18 years old.

I am informed that it is easy to be isolated when in a hotel rather than a hostel.

My perception of hostels:
>They attract outgoing people (such as pic-related)
>You lose luxury in sharing rooms and whatnot.

I'm more inclined to a nice hotel where I can have my alone time. That being said, I don't want to be too alone and would like to be somewhat social.

So my real question is whether hotels do naturally lead to you becoming isolated?

You already know the answer. My first trip alone was to Istanbul at 19, stayed in a hotel. Didn't meet anyone, stayed in the hotel most of the time with an occasional walk along Istiklal St. Had a miserable time really. Felt like a loser with no friends the whole time.

Did a Europe trip for 2 months awhile later. Only stayed in hostels. Was an amazing time. You meet so many people to connect and adventure with.

It all depends who you are, try both and see which you like better. Personally, I'm an introvert who aspires to be extroverted - so I still need my alone time at an airbnb/hotel sometimes too.
>>
>>1222604
Personally, I always tend to set myself to meet up with people before I go (I am not talking just women), including people I have met through 4Chan, and other online forums and chat groups. If I don't stay in a hotel, I stay with them. I never ask to stay, they often offer. I have asked for hotel and apartmental suggestions, so I get places at local or hook up prices. Another added advantage is a local guide/translator so you end up in places or doing things you otherwise wouldn't have known about.

I don't do hostels because I dislike the lack of intimacy, even with the lack of privacy, and the crowd is pretty much the same and memey. Especially in SEA.

I really liked the cave I visited there, it was supposed to be a mine but turned into more of a tourist attraction, I also enjoyed the show on a riverboat.

The town is odd though, odd in a way I can't quite explain. Growing up my neighbors went to Branson every year to a place called SilverDollar City I think. It's about a 3 hour drive from where I live so many people go, often eccentric old people with "open marriages" who speak with Southern accents despite living in the Midwest.

I've finally saved up some cash along with my friends to backpack through Europe. We've planned to stay in hostels and in France we're probably gonna stay at a family friend's place.

Only thing is though, I'm pajeet-tier brown and Muslim even though I've been Canadian since '92. I know about the entire situation in Europe, so the question would be how "racially insensitive" are people at the moment?

There are too many brown people in Europe for you to feel any aggressivity

Worst-case scenario some drunk dude is gonna talk shit, but that could happen in any country
>>
If you were going to Eastern Europe I'd tell you to watch your back, but you shouldn't have any problems in France.
>>
Are your friends you're travelling with white? If they are that will help you out

If not, you might just want to look like a standard traveler. I assume people that would be a dick to because you're brown would be less likely to be a dick if they new you were just passing through rather than staying there for a long time.

UAE, Qatar, or Bahrain. Saudi Arabia, if you are in a place that is within driving distance of these 3 countries. I have heard Kuwait is okay, but not fun, so you will find yourself flying to Bahrain or UAE. But Kuwait is still very liveable, alcohol can be found, and you can possibly date locals, or have the low hanging fruit of the Filipinas that live there, who do throw good house parties and love to cook. I have not met any teachers from Oman.

Also note that 9/10 they aren't ESL teachers there. You are a regular teacher with ESL certification.

I've heard from multiple sources that UAE is a "sell your soul" situation where it sucks but you make really good money. Hopefully someone else can explain more about why exactly that is, cause I don't really know.

They are probably talking about supporting a Muslim country who they feel violates civil rights. Ignoring the fact that the laborers they call slaves are from the lower castes of South Asia and they are making a better living than they would in their own country.

I miss my manservant, "Paul"

So my wife planned a trip to Thailand for us in the middle of April. I don't have any strong feelings about it one way or another but she wanted it for a long time so I am happy to oblige.

The problem is that we will be travelling with our 1 y.o kiddo and I heard that Thailand and pretty much all the places around it are a boiling hellhole that time of the year.

Does anyone have experience going to Thailand mid-April with small kids? How difficult would it be for the babby to handle the heat?

where do you live? here are some mitigating techniques i used hauling my kid around california's central valley and the sierra (similar temps, but less humidity) when he was 5-8 months old:
>wide brimmed hat
>loose, light clothes
keep as much skin protected from sun as you can, without bundling
>baby sunscreen
>cool showers/baths/pools
>lots of naked time
>aggressive management of diaper rash
>do stuff early when it's cooler then stay indoors in the afternoon
assuming indoors is cooled at least a little, doesn't do any good if it's just acting as a sauna
>lots of water
>cold fruit
>baby carrier that holds them away from your body
>stroller or baby carrier has very good sunshade
and most important
>PAY THE FUCK ATTENTION TO HOW THEY'RE DOING
if they're flushed and cranky and haven't pissed in 6 hours you fucked up.

if you're in the market, pic related has been an amazing carrier-osprey poco plus.
>>
>>1221600
I am based in Shanghai so the actual travel time won't be as bad - and the kiddo has already endured flights to Turkey and Ukraine (although that was when he was 6-7 months old and wasn't as fussy).

Last summer in Jiangsu wasn't too hot so he was okay, no idea how well he handles 35+ temperatures.

Thanks for the tips, I will take note of them. Our stroller has a good sunshade but I cba lugging the thing around all day so the carrier similar to the one you posted may be a good idea.
>>
>>1221602
less worried about flight, more worried about what temps they're used to.

>Can anyone help with traveling to the west bank (not Gaza).

I don't want to be on the leash of Israeli authority. I want to be there on my own and get to know the people there and express my sympathies to their plight. I also don't want to get fucking murdered for being a Western. And I don't want a bodyguard if that's all possible.

Any cheap hotel recommendations would be welcomed.

It's really not that difficult. Any bus from the Arab bus station in Jerusalem can take you to the West Bank, and it's all safe enough.

I'm pretty damn white/western and I got a bus from Jerusalem to Bethlehem in the West Bank and walked around the refugee camps without feeling threatened or having a bodyguard or anything. Pic related, it's some graffiti on the walls of the camp.

I went to Hebron and Ramallah too, with a tour guide, and the most threatened I felt was from the Israeli soldiers. Every Palestinian I met was very nice and welcoming.

I suggest you tell us what sort of general things interest you, what sort of budget you have, etc. Giving us more information as opposed to less, gets you better, more relevant answers.

In the meantime, if you like bad taxidermy, spend an hour in the Natural History Museum. (Differs from the National History Museum.) Lots of great examples of animals that seem delighted to be dead.
>>

That depends what you are interested in or what you intend to see there.

6 days is a bit long for Dublin though, you will be able to squeeze other parts of Ireland in too (and that's a good thing)

I was thinking about booking my flights to DEL from LAX using Skiplagged cause they are SUPER cheap, but there are a lot of users saying that airlines ban you if they think that you might jump flights...

Has anyone ever succesfully used Skiplagged? How did you manage your luggage? Also how is ANA compared to emirates?
10 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1220970
You manage your luggage by only bringing carry-on. If you check a bag it's going to the final destination with or without you. Also you might cause a delay for other travelers because if there's a bag in the cargo hold but no butt in the seat they'll try to find you in the airport.

I've done hidden city trips before, and it's something you have to infrequently and with multiple carriers because they will flag you and ban you from their service.

IMO the boom in budget airlines and booking websites and increasing security have made hidden city trips a bit unnecessary and inconvenient most of the time. Plan ahead, shop around, look for less common airports to fly into.
>>
>>1220970
I've used skiplagged 3 times, no problems and always super cheap. The actual prices match up pretty well with the advertised prices, from my experience.

I actually just booked a flight from boston to iceland round trip for $300 using skip lagged
>>
I did it once when I was booking a last-minute US domestic flight. It's a little nerve wracking because you have to be absolutely sure that your carry on will get on, and not be gate-checked. So it's best to be one of those assholes waiting up in line to be one of the first to get on.

Other than that, wasn't a big deal.
