If you had four weeks to spend in SE Asia and it might be the only time you ever go there, where should you go?
Assuming you're not into full moon parties and banging ladyboys ad nauseum.
I'm thinking Bangkok, Chiang Mai/Golden Triangle and maybe Cambodia.
Vietnam and then maybe Bangkok and northern Thailand, you could do laos and Cambodia but, they're only a couple days each for most people.
Wherever in Thailand interests you. Maybe Angkor Wat and then fly to Hanoi to spend some time in Northern Vietnam.

I want to go to Hawaii, more specifically Maui. I have about $2500 saved up so I feel confident I can get there and back (roundtrip from NYC). The only problem is what to do in Hawaii, where to go, and what to avoid.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

OP i've been to Maui a few times. Does $2500 include your airfare? Hotel? that amount might be a tad light if you're staying for more than a few days. As for what to do you can't beat renting a snorkel and fins and just exploring. Seriously this is a cheap best bang for your buck activity. look into renting a bike too. avoid whale watch tours, and go check out Paia. Its a small surf town on the north end of the island and you can watch surfers and chill on a beach that isn't too touristy. have fun OP its really hard to have a bad time in Maui
>>1290668
Maui resident here - Make sure you get a rental car, as thats pretty much the only way to get around efficiently. Go on the road to Hana, top of haleakala, and into Iao Valley. If you want to just chill on a beach, south maui (Kihei, Wailea) is where it's at
Should I even try to live in Santa Monica, CA of i make less than 10k USD a month after taxes. I'm not trying to be a grown ass man living with roommates
>>1290661
If by under 10k you mean 8 or 9k, it's possible, but you'd be fucking disappointed with what you got for it. 2k you could get a studio or maybe a little 1 br above a shop, 3-4k for a 1 bedroom proper, then parking, and the only shops less than 30 min away are boutiques and bistros, so either waste gas or buy 12 dollar croissants.
Why not live in the burbs?
>>1290721
>live in the burbs
Because I want to have fun
Try a slightly cheaper neighborhood. You're gonna be pissed how little your money gets you in an overpriced city like Santa Monica.
Me and my friends are planning to go on vacation somewhere outside the United States are there any cheap destinations? So far we've thought of Nicaragua and Bolivia
>>1290656
Both good ideas.
When did you intend to go? mid-Sept is shoulder season in a lot of places and the bargains abound. Kids are back in school and busy, and the hotels are cheap. I drove around Nova Scotia mid-Sept last year, saw the busker festival, swam on beaches in cape breton, kitchen party music, sailed, saw whales, and had gorgeous choices for like $60-100/night with meals. I highly recommend the Trout Point Lodge and the candlelight walking tour in Annapolis.
> newborn kitten that was abandoned by his mom right after birth in the middle of the hostel garden just won't stop meowing desperately
We tried to hear him and feed him,but he just ignores the food and keep meowing. We looked on the internet and it says that if a kitten gets abandoned in the first 5 hours after birth, he's basically dead. He won't open his eyes, he can't digest non feline milk for the first three weeks of his life, and he can't pee or shit without his mother help
We tried to show it to other cats around hoping some female would accept him, but it was useless
Also, hostel feels thread

Call up a vet's office and ask "wat do?" if it's both still alive and you still want to help.
I found my kitten at 3 weeks, and that was a few weeks of bottle feeding before she had the teeth and interest in solid food.
I hope you can help. I hate it when animals are in distress or pain.
>>1290657
Otherwise kill it and end it's pain.
>>1290665
This is what we did. We are in the middle of bumfuck nowhere in the Balkans, and everyone in the hostel is leaving in a couple of days, there are no vets around and the hostel owners didn't want to take care of it
Rest in peppermint smol cat :(
I'll be staying for 4 to 6 weeks in Glasgow for work and will probably visit the Highlands in the weekends... that said, I've heard/read that Glasgow has a rather high crime rate and stabbings and outright hostility towards non-Scots are pretty common... Red pill me bros.
Glasgow is much safer than London. There's no reason to be scared there. Yes there are some poor estates where the life expectancy has dropped to 53 but you won't have any business there anyway.
>>1290624
Yeah someone was winding up you up M8. I've been here 8 years and never had any bother, even when Ive been stinking drunk in rough parts of town. I also lived in Highlands for a while and know both places quiet well. Ask me anything.

Without being too much of a hassle, how is it around town, what places to avoid, are transports ok like subway and buses, just general tips and advice you might have for a portuguese guy about to spend some time there.
I'm in Bar Harbor, Maine for dinner while traveling throughout New England. Does anyone who's been there before or lives around there have a suggestion on the best place for seafood?
Thurston's lobster pound is on the ass-end of the island, but it's the quintessential Maine lobster experience; worth the drive. There are nice outdoor places to fuck around and make a day of it anyway. Ship Harbor, Bass Harbor lighthouse.
>>1290622
lived there a summer and my sister is a Ranger. Farther through the island at Southwest Harbor theres a place called Beals, HIGHLY recommend, but you can get a good meal in town at Geddys as well. Steer clear of the restaurant at the Bar Harbor Inn, not that the quality or views are bad but they get a bunch of overseas workers to work the kitchen for pennies and then they end up getting physically assaulted by the management and scared into silence, its pretty fucked and I quit because of it.
I also heard good things about the chart room. I know this post is like 12 hours old, but anyone else going there would do well to listen to this.
Hi /trv/, was wondering if I could get any input from you helpful fellows regarding a trip to Japan that I'm planning. Go ahead call me a weeb faggot, or whatever, but I would really appreciate any insight you might give me.
In the summer of 2019, after I finish my degree I plan to take the entire month of June off and fly over there. I took 3 years of Japanese so I have an alright base for navigating and all that, but I was hoping I can have you help me decide my initial city of entrance and exit.
I was originally planning on flying into Sapporo in Hokkaido, spending 4-5 days and then making my way down to Honshu, headin down to Tokyo and them potentially flying home out of Osaka or Hiroshima. Does that sound doable? Is that rushing far too much? What would you suggest. Im open to pretty much any route. I'll have $10k-$15k to play around with for the entire month, including airfare, so I'm not too concerned when it comes to money. I'm just looking for you to share personal experiences, maybe drop a hidden gem or two you might've found that I should check out, and any general things you might be able to pass along. Thanks in advance

Hi I'm looking for thrift and vintage shops in Kraków and just general neat things that locals do in Kraków? Google is pretty unhelpful and only gives me tourist trap attractions.
Pic related to tourist shit.

Stay in, microwave a pizza, and drink 6 cans of Lidl-brand lager. Congratulations, you are living an authentic life.
>>1290557
Just walk around the city like most of the vagrants that live there. Plenty of cafes and shit to hang around in. Also the bar scene is pretty great desu
Current view thread
If you're travelling post a picture of your current view.
Even if you're in your home base you can do it too.

I'll be there in 3 weeks. Can't fucking wait.
Going to Vienna for this week. Some advice? What are some must see? I prefer modern architecture and stuff then old stuff, but open for everything.
Are there some pretty cool cafés with stuff I can't see anywhere else? thanks
>>1290439
fuckk sorry, just found out there is active Vienna thread.
I'm traveling to Europe for a little over 5 weeks and want to upgrade my luggage since it's showing its age.
Does /trv/ have any recommendations for bags (both personal item & carry-on) that are good?
Travel light, no more than 32L
>>1290421
This. Though I'd say somewhere between 30-35L.
Unless you want to carry a heckton of souvenirs with you. You don't need that many clothes with you for example, just find places to do your laundry at.
I'm a business traveler first and then taking a bit of vacation afterwards
I'm looking at taking a big ass laptop bag (I've put 1x 17" laptop, 1x surface, 1 dSLR + 2 lenses (standard + telephoto) in it and it counts as a personal item on delta/etc) and regular suitcase/roller bag
Are backpacks recommended here because they're good for hiking?
Thoughts on taking a 10k loan to backpack sea for 3 months? I don't have enough time to save as I need to leave in December at the latest.
Absolutely not, no. This is one of the stupidest posts of all time on /trv/. Do not take loans to provide spending money. You take loans to finance transition to a position of higher earnings/assets; otherwise you will find yourself in a spiral of debt you FUCKING IDIOT
10k seems a bit extravagant for SE Asia
Yeah. This stinks as an idea. You're fucking yourself for what? Three months of your life you're going to pay off for the next few years. You're going to spiral into debt and only have a few memories to take from it.
Please either save and go for it or aim for somewhere else with the money you have.
There is something that makes you value something a lot more if you have to work for it.
Hello friends, i'm working in a cruise ship and some weeks ago someone stolen my smartphone with italian sim. In the next days i will be first in helsinki and then in tallin and i'm looking for a prepaid card with data internet that i can use in roaming all over eruope, because next week i return in italy and i'm goingo to do a 10 days crossing by the sea.
I think there is no longer roaming in the EU
>>1290384
When you get to Helsinki go to an "R-kiosk" and get a prepaid SIM. They can be found everywhere
>>1290458
This'll work, but be aware that you'll be paying for data once you go outside Finland, only the regular plans include the free ETA roaming. From what I could tell, most operators charge around 0.5-0.7 cents per MB.
I need some advice on surviving Russian winter.
Next month I'm beginning a teaching contract in St. Petersburg. I grew up on the gulf coast and winter is little to nothing here, it'll snow maybe once a decade. I bought a down insulated coat and know I should get some gloves. Otherwise I need advice on the various particulars of living in the cold and any other suggestions you guys might have.
>>1290377
I live in inner-mongolia, it gets down to -25c or so.
You'll need two layers on your legs, some thermal underwear of some sort under your trousers. You can buy it there.
Actually, buy it all there, Russians come in all sizes so it will fit and obviously they have everything they need.
Any decent mittens/gloves will do unless you're on a bike/scooter, you just put them in your pockets.
Scarves, hats with ear flaps, stuff like that. You can buy them locally anyway.
Good boots are fine, you can get foil-lined insoles which help prevent heat-loss but you're not likely to spend hours outside so it's not a big deal.
Bring some nice comfy flannel pjs, they're great for if your building isn't well heated but most of them are in cold climates.
>>1290377
You really don't need big bulky jackets. Layer with wool, merino is good and comes in different weights depending on your needs. For an outer layer get something wind/waterproof (gore-Tex).
>>1290377
Just buy stuff locally, no need to lug around heavy winter clothes, there's much better choice there.
It's not that cold in Piter, but quite moist and windy, so it's going to feel colder than it is. Better to have water- and windproof stuff, thermal wear helps a lot. Get quality boots, crappy ones get their soles corroded by the anti-icing chemicals they spray the streets.
