I have never booked my own holiday before, so I don't have any experience with the financial side of travel - my parents used to handle all that when I was living with them.

How much should I expect to pay for a week's accomodation in Hong Kong, plane tickets there from London, and what kind of daily budget would be average as well?

Any tips on keeping costs down generally?

I have a GF from Hong Kong.

We live in Norway right now.

If I go to Hong Kong I will stay at her place

= Get a Hong Konger for a GF and stay at her place. Most adults are very traditional, so just show respect.

Success.

OMG, this isn't rocket science OP. You just start planning and make note of the prices as you do that.

OP, go to a travel website like kayak, or british airways or delta and start plugging in dates that work for you. Pick best price. Write it down.
Go to another travel website, and pick a neighborhood that works for you, compare hotels by star, and pick something that works for you. Check prices, rank by prices, contrast and compare.
Write it down, multiply by 7.

Basic budget. Done. Choose your neighborhoods, imho by safety, nightlife, or lack of nightlife. Central district, whatever you wish to be close to see. It's not an inexpensive city and well, that's going to give it a uniquely high budget sometimes. You'll balance safety and comfort with location.

Bergenfam reporting in.

First of all, try and find a middle ground between cheap airfare and convenience. Cheapest isn't always the best and neither is the most expensive. I find KLM // Norwegian Air service most of my needs - on time, comfortable, and friendly without idiotic passengers ruining the flight.

For budgeting for overnight stays, try Air BnB before a hostel. I have mild insomnia and can't stand getting any less sleep than I already do, so I tend to stay away from hostels despite their cheapness // convenience.

Lastly, after you get that all figured out; make an itinerary for what you would like to do every single day of the trip. Try and leave your place before 10 AM or something like that. Some people prefer to come back early in the evening, but generally I would stop for a rest at a cafe or where I was staying - charge my phone, leave again until 10 or 11 pm at night. Much more to be done this way.

Lastly decide on a daily budget. I don't know shit about Hong Kong for a couple. $30 a day? Less? More?

Basically my advice is start with the flight, then worry about accommodation, THEN plan your actual trip and siteseeing.

My neet life is coming to an end, and my parents are so desperate to be rid of me they are offering to pay for a plane ticket to a place I could meet with someone or get a job.

I have no friends or contacts, and I know its not possible to get work or a work visa with no skills, but Instead of being homeless in my home town I want to take the opportunity to finally leave north america and see a bit of the planet, until my money runs out and I can walk into the sea.

If you had to get on one flight you knew you not be coming back from, where would it be and why.

I dont want to trouble glorious nippon with my corpse.

I'd be tempted to try some Robinson Crusoe style self-isolation by "borrowing" some uninhabited island before the watery hike of no-return. Somewhere like Norway, Sweden, Canada or other northern nations with a surfeit of islands. The other option is to head into the vast expanse of Russia / Central Asia and never reappear...

If this woman can do it, maybe, just maybe, you or I could, if death isn't the worst thing that could happen. When my time comes, I'll be looking for somewhere to retreat, in the meantime I'll continue to enjoy the world as best as I can.

Here is the scenario
You wake up butt naked in a hotel in Denver
Hotel is paid for one week
You have a credit card with 10k American 2500 allotment for gear and clothing.

You must travel to Thailand straight from the hotel in one week.
You have internet access and an amazon prime account.
You will be backpacking through SEA for at least three months.

Any recommendation for citys in the US that are worth visiting ?
28 posts and 5 images submitted.
>>
There are many. Instead of listing them all, tell us what your interests are and we can narrow it down.
>>
honestly, a lot of them are the same. for example, there's nothing all that unique about chicago compared with a place like dallas or seattle.

that said, the most unique cities in the u.s worth visiting are:
>new orleans
>san francisco
>boston
>los angeles

for me, that's it. new york has a lot of diverse food and cultures which is cool but other than that it's really just a bunch of skyscrapers. world class museums though so go if you like those.
>>
>>1234913
and i guess i would add miami to this as well since the cuban influence makes it pretty unique as well

I'm going a month-long horse riding trip in Kazakhstan and later this year hiking arounf SEA. I'm also fairly pale and burn up like hell under the sun even with proper lotion.

So any recommendations on Tilley hats?

For a fellow redhead type, I say you gotta just invest in the UV fabric stuff like the fishing gear from Colombia sportswear. UV vented long sleeve fishing (over)shirt can sub for SPF cream across neck, shoulders, arms...and the breeze enters through the vents in the nicely articulated shoulder seams and around pockets and front closure. This will keep you cool in a tropical climate, quick dry and humidity busting too. There are options for colors. Think of it like an overshirt.

I dare say you need a different kind of hat for both climates. You're going to deal with rain and humidity in one climate, and desert conditions in the other, with possibly very cold nights. It might be tough to get a wide enough brim for horseback sun. I'd look to an australian or cowboy style, not a canadian company for design there. A rope to keep it from flying off and onto the ground, and enough of a brim that shades your ears, chin and neck for low angle sun. Your choice of hat looks pretty for uhh, panama city wear. You might at least want a "cool towel" that you can wet down and tuck under the back of the hat like a yard worker to add some shade and coolness during the heat of the day.

You know you could have glare, so make sure you have some great sunglasses with polarizing and anti glare inside the lens.

>UV fabric stuff like the fishing gear from Colombia sportswear.

I'm black and even I where Columbia clothing and have a Columbia hat when I travel in SEA.
>>
>>1234400
This. Anything blocking most UV, even your coat of sunscreen, keeps you body so much cooler. (Normal fabric is usually SPF10 or less, even less when wet, so it just doesn't cut it). The problem with sunscreen is checking your bag and leaks because of liquids or aerosols or buying some inferior sticky or overpriced local brand choices once there.

To go in a bit more depth. I'm from Australia and i'll be working in America over the summer and then will have all of August to travel. I don't have my heart set on anywhere (although I think the grand canyon and vegas are a must) at the moment, so I really just have no idea what I should do.

I'll be working near San Antonio so i'd like to have a few days there, if anyone can recommend some things to see or places to eat there that would be great.

Other than that though I have no idea.
I'd love to see some beautiful nature/national parks but also see the cities.

Honestly open to anything.

Since you've got a whole month, I would suggest renting a car and going on a roadtrip (if you have the money). Set a round trip with your major goals, like Las Vegas, etc. then check out what's between your goals and what might interest you.

Since you want to see Vegas and the Grand Canyon, I'd suggest going further West as well, Death Valley, Yosemite, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, Yellowstone, etc.

I wouldn't spend more than 4 or 5 hours driving each day and plan not to drive every day. Usually you don't need to book your hotels/motels in advance, so you can just book a place a day before you arrive and extend/shorten your stay as you see fit. If you like a place, stay a while longer, or move on if you don't like it.

Thanks for the advice mate i'll look into renting a car. I have a mate that may potentially be able to come so that would help with that cost

definitely be sure to hit the South, New Orleans and southern Louisiana are can't miss places

The south will be the nicest and most polite, people down here are proud of their culture and will teach anyone who is willing to learn

also the swamps are fucking beautiful, you really feel like you are in complete nature

There are also other great spots in the South, now try and hit the south near the end of August, it will be cooler and you will be able to experience SEC football

Go tailgating, tell everyone that you are from Australia and put on your thickest accent, and you will guarenteed make a lot of new friends and get a lot of the best food in the world (only at LSU though), most people at the tailgates are drunk and happy so it is almost too easy to fit in.

That way you will experience the truest form of southern culture, trust me on this one,

Also definitely do that at LSU for the best experience

Yes, i advice going a bit uptown. Visit the places you usually don't visit. New York City is a country on it's own. Maybe check out Harlem or the Bronx even. I found myself strolling around the city and I didn't get bored. Have fun.

For me, it's Paris. I don't get the hate. Yeah there's scammers and a shit ton of tourist traps but I haven't ever seen a more beautiful city.

Singapore too. /trv/ says it's boring but it's fascinating how efficient and clean it is compared to American cities. Also the museums were pretty good there too.

I fucking LOVE Paris. I just got back last week from a week in Paris alone and I had an absolute fucking blast. Part of it for me is that I get to speak French which I don't get to do back home.

The scammers and gypsies are almost a barrier to entry for newfags that I kinda like it. Once you get a hang of all the strings / arabs / north Africans it's pretty easy. The worst are those gypsies at the Eiffel tower who ask you to sign their shit.

I got fucked hard on some sort of Albanian shell game though. I knew I shouldn't have done a heavy wake and bake before heading out into the heart of those fuckin' Albanians for a pack of smokes. By the time I realized what was happening there went 200 euros. Oh well, worth it for the lesson. Protip: They're all playing together, the dealer, the "players", etc.

Hey /trv/

So I'm traveling abroad and I need advice. I'll be in Thailand with a budget of about 3k. I'm white, I have a degree, and I'm young and fit enough to do manual labor.

1) How long can I survive on that cash, eating cheaply, not going out to expensive clubs or doing crazy drugs, but sightseeing and the occasional ladyboy?
2) How hard is it to find under the table work? I'm willing to do anything.
3) If this isn't an option, where else would one go? I'm open to suggestions.

I'm planning on leaving next month after I sell most of my shit. I'm here to answer any follow up questions as well.

Are you a native English speaker?
>>
>>1236024
Yes
>>
You could make 3k last at least 4 months if you're frugal (ie. not boozing everyday, staying put in a city for a few weeks at a time, etc.)

Lots of hostels will let you bartend/run the front desk in exchange for a free bed, so that can help you stretch your budget. I've found getting a gig like this is pretty easy: book a few nights at a hostel, introduce yourself to the staff, show you're personable and not an autist, and after a day or two ask if you can help work. If they think you'd be a good face for the hostel, they'll help you out.

Some tourist companies may hire you under the table, but you'll likely be making less than Thai minimum wage, not ideal.

Do you have a useful degree? If so you might be able to do something related to your field. There's a lot of digital nomads in the major cities, so you could do something on the internet. It doesn't have to earn much, earning $15 a day can help extend out your trip by a few months

It's advisable not to overstay your visa, or you'll run the risk of getting deported and barred from reentering the country. So keep in mind the coat of a visa run to Laos or Cambodia when budgeting.

My experience of canoeing extends as far as mooching around Bristol's floating harbour in search of refreshment opportunities on warm weekends, and exploring the old castle moat. I'm guessing heading out on the typically calm waters of a canal wouldn't be much different, and thus should be pretty enjoyable. Certainly here in England, you'd hit a waterside pub every few miles on places like the Kennet and Avon.

Any British Anons wanting to have a go, you'll need a Canal & River Trust Licence available here:
https://licensing.canalrivertrust.org.uk/Account/Register

It's cheap, and you get to find places like pic related.

Hey guys, this is gonna be a different question. But I know there should be some of you on here suited to answer this one..

I'm almost done my semester abroad in Barcelona and towards the last week I have in Europe I want to go somewhere and unwind. What I want is to go to some countryside where the air quality is superb. I was in Zurich this week and it was very good. I want something similar, but cheaper.

I haven't slept well this semester and I've drank and partied my ass off. I also ate a lot of junk food. My main purpose for finding somewhere with clean air to stay is to detox, live stress free for a couple days and sleep well.

Any suggestions?

through some research I found iceland, helsinki, finland and porto, portugal. But this strikes me as odd because it's the city and I want something on the outskirts by the countryside, that has accessible cheap housing (preferably airbnb)

any suggestions? looking to stay during the last week of april.

Hi /trv/,
just found this board, I already love it. Long story short: I'm an adoptee and I was born in Colombia. Since I'm hitting my 30s, I want to discover MUH roots and MUH heritage, the most Colombian think I do is listening to Shakira, lol. I was adopted when I was like 1 month, never been back there, only heard about it randomly from news and the Internet, and of course from what my parents reported to me. They always said that it's a gorgeous country, very poor and dangerous, but the people are top tier. At the same time they saw really creepy streets and even some cutthroats, lol.

Since 30 years have passed I don't even imagine how can be Colombia as today. So, since I think you're pretty competent, I wanted to ask you what I've to expect. Is it really a dangerous place, especially for someone who lived in Europe for 30 years? Will I be treated better being, actually, a local (I think I'm a mestizo)? Can I even have some fun (I'm curious to see how girls treat me here, lol), or I risk waking up in a sewer without a kidney? What is the best solution for housing? I'm thinking about AirBnb, but I don't know if maybe a good hotel is better. I don't really know what I will get, the closest I was to Colombia was when I crossed the American border and went to Tiquana. Lastly, which are the main attractions? I really like nature and outdoor and I always dreamt to visit Amazon.

I'm also wondering if there is some way to get in touch with my biological parents... Really curious and scared to be honest. I'm really looking forward this travel, it's like a journey of self-discovery and shit for me. Thank you very much in advance for the advice.

Listen, there's a LOT to see and do in Colombia. If you're not going to specify a city or a specific zone, it's really hard to make generalizations.

If you want to go to the Amazon, that's going to be a very different experience than going to a major city.

Perhaps you should do some digging and see what region your biological parents come from.

Do you speak Spanish at all?
>>
> Is it really a dangerous place, especially for someone who lived in Europe for 30 years?
If you are clinically idiot

>Will I be treated better being, actually, a local (I think I'm a mestizo)?
If you are brown we would think that you're from India or something.
>Can I even have some fun (I'm curious to see how girls treat me here, lol), or I risk waking up in a sewer without a kidney?
There is a thing called sexual tourism, read about that...

>What is the best solution for housing?
Five star hotels

>don't really know what I will get, the closest I was to Colombia was when I crossed the American border and went to Tiquana.

See documentaries about Colombia, they are good for your mind
> Lastly, which are the main attractions?

Excuse me for my lack of information, I'm not used to this board. I was born in Bogota. I'm lightly brown, I come across usually as an Italian from the south. I lived for 30 years and still didn't figure out what I am, lol.
