What Airlines do you like, what Airlines do you hate /trv/?

Just had two boring as fuck 12 hour flights with China Eastern. Packed my phone with music and movies for the trip only to find out on the plane that they have a new policy of not allowing any cellphone usage, even in flight mode. Guess it's because of Samsung? What Airlines do you usually avoid and which Airlines do you prefer flying with?

Well, since you asked.

They have let too many Chinese crooks in.

No more cheap investment visas. Tax the shit out of the foreigners owning property there (especially if owning more than one home), let this put the rest off their "investments". This will reduce demand and burst the property bubble, so we can laugh at their losses and the various China-centric businesses that go bankrupt and then every day real Canadians can afford the place again.

An interesting politics-based answer, probably would discuss it if this were a politics board.

Bu it's pretty off-topic for a travel board.

Does anybody else just like to walk around and explore when they get to a major city for at least a day while they're there?

What are your tips or general rules for doing so? Do you guys just follow the major streets, then branch off from there? In nicer cities, do you guys explore the side streets?

Yeah, that's what I usually do.

Normally I'll take a taxi or public transit to my hostel, depending on whether I've just started my trip or am carrying on overland. In Latin America, I always ask what parts of the city and neighborhood I should avoid.

Had a great time walking around Bogota back in 2015. I followed Carrera Septima for an age before turning back and chilling in a park.

Traveled tons since then and am leaving to Ecuador on Monday. Probably going to spend most of Tuesday being lazy, adjusting to the altitude, and exploring Mariscal while trying not to get robbed.

That's what I do as well. Sometimes I will seek out a specific street or neighborhood or transit stop and explore from there, but I always do a few expanding concentric circles from wherever I am staying. OK, I guess it's more of a spiral. But it's what I do.

I also nearly deliberately forget a few minor toiletries, because I like to go to local convenience stores. Finding those stores is typically a big part of my wandering near my lodging.

Help me decide where to go next.

I'm about to be made redundant and will have approx 50k GBP burning a hole in my pocket.
Me and wifey have decided to have a trip away from the kids and I'm looking for suggestions.

Bearing in mind we want to go somewhere that would normally be prohibitively expensive what would /trv/ suggest? She likes sitting on a beach, I like drinking. So far I've suggested Japan, but she vetoed. She suggested Maldives but I vetoed. Anyone got any compromise solutions?

Pic related. It's where we've been together. Poor I know.

Go to Dubai. Decent beaches, decent night life, and stay someplace like the Raffles. Spend a night in the desert at the nature preserve with oryxes and shit. Let your wife splurge on some shopping.

Hey /trv/,

About to get out of undergrad and I found a position working in hospitality in Garmisch Germany (Bavaria).

Pay is $9/hr w/ 32-40hr work week.

I am finishing up 2 semesters of German and this seems like a good opportunity to improve my speaking skills and to travel around before I figure out what exactly I want to do.

I would be there for a year and some change.

Does this sound good to you or should I duck out while I still can?

Anyone have experience with the area or "taking a year off"? What kind of mentality should I have while I'm doing this sort of thing?

Thanks

How good are you at dialects?
You should probably watch some shows which are in bavarian german since even native Germans at times have problems understanding bavarians.

It surely is a good idea to do now, since Germany probably won't exist anymore in 20 years. So if you are interested in the german culture you should do it rather now than later.

Sup /trv/, this is probably gonna sound super cringey but here goes. I'd always wanted to see a snippet of what high school in Japan is like, and from what I've researched the best way to experience that is to go to one of those high school festivals open to the public. However I've found very little information on them online, some sites say these sort of festivals open in October, some say in July. Any more experienced gaijins know about this?

Ahahahaha why the fuck would anyone want to come here out of choice. This city is a frozen shithole for 7-8 months of the year. Unless you're a masochist avoid this shithole.

I took this picture a month ago. If you're from a snowless country you may think " cool! Looks nice! " and yeah snow is pretty. But the unending cold and darkness take a toll and past the novelty of the first few weeks it begins to drain your will to live. I'm either going to relapse soon and be stoned 24/7 again to escape, leave the city forever or kill myself soon. Fuck this place.
>>
>>1245438
Trust me, I live in Nola, and I would kill for atleast a month of cold, we got below freezing 3 times in the last year, 3 fucking times, it was 80° in January, your situation is no worse than ours, just opposite
>>
>>1245503

I'm from a small American town and I've travelled all over Europe and Asia quite a bit however there is still one thing I'm not sure of:

>is it normal to sit up front in taxis? Or do they expect you to sit in the back?

If I travel with my wife, I sit in the back with her, if I travel alone I sit up front, if I travel with another male friend we split and one goes up front the other in the back. What's "normal"?

In Serbia you sit in front
>>
Yes, it's normal in E Europe to sit in front if you're alone.

I'd go as far as saying it's weird if you're alone and sit in the back.

Hi /trv/
Complete rookie in terms of travelling alone here. I've got a few questions and would be grateful if somebody would bother to help me out.
My age 22 and I'm going on a world trip in roughly 2-3 weeks for at least 6 months. Have been dreaming of this since I was 16, though I never really thought about preparing that in any way.
My "plan" is basically to hitchhike somewhere to spain, try to get a job as deckboy or something on a cargo freighter and look where I'm gonna land. That's pretty much as far as it goes since I really suck at planning. and I won't bother making some complex plan that falls apart the first day in.

Now here's my questions:
>Does hitchhiking still work somewhat efficient?
>Do I need some special papers to get on a boat/is it actually possible to simply get hired on one?
>What can happen if I build up my tent somewhere in a forest illegally and I get caught?
>My basic equipment currently consists of some clothes, a rainjacket, a tent and a sleeping bag and a scooter. What else would you recommend?

Sorry for the bad structuring. I suck at that.

>Do I need some special papers to get on a boat/is it actually possible to simply get hired on one?
Jumping in before people start attacking... there's no such thing as bumbling your way onto a freighter. You need licenses, qualifications, and on many routes, union membership. It is not the high seas of the 1850s. Freight companies are highly regulated and highly insured, and the people who work for them (lots of underpaid Filipinos, among others) know what they're doing.

This is kind of a meme here.
>>
>>1245183
You might want to think this over better, try looking up and contacting people who have already done this and see what they did
>>
>>1245183
Drop the scooter, hitchiking works if you look the part, you need papers to get on a boat this isn't a 19th century adventure book.

Good luck.

Also the girls aren't as easy as you've been told unless you speak spanish really well.

What do you mean by "well", like, can pass for a native speaker?

If I can speak well enough to communicate basically anything other than arcane business jargon and electrical engineering terms, even if I make frequent grammatical errors, is that good enough?
>>
>>1245251

I'm studying abroad in Genoa, Italy next year. Was only given like 4 choices by my college.
Only picked it because no Chads from my university were going and because it didn't have direct flights to my country meaning i will be more likely to travel though Europe than go home. And seems like there's some things to do

Anyone ever experience Genoa or have insider information of Italy in general?

hey italian here.
i live in rome but i traveled for a good part of italy.
genoa is a nice city on the sea, i've been there twice. most people think it's just the aquarium but there are a lot of important places and attractions. i remember my favourite was the lighthouse.
in my opinion you did good by choosing genova since it's much less of a tourist trap than venice or rome.
if you need help with something else just ask!

hey OP, just noticed you said you are going to study abroad all next year in genoa. in that case you are going to need some other informations. i suggest you look up the exchange between your currency and euros.
regarding moving in the city, the city is not that big and is well "connected" there is a subway line with 7 stations and 138 bus lines and also some elevators in the panoramic zones of the city. Look up http://www.visitgenoa.it/en/public-transports

what else do you need? i assume you are doing dealing with a students exchange program so you already have a place to stay there right?

Genova is a based city. Its historical centre is huge (but because there's loads of alleyways, it often stinks of piss). I'm going there again this summer.
Plus, it has everything you might need in the vicinty: hills/mountains, the sea, the Cinque Terre (go in spring, NOT in summer).

Any questions?

I'm going to the Toronto area for the first time at the end of the month.
I have a family member out there so I don't have to worry about all the tourist stuff.
However I will be looking for a MP whilst there. Preferably Asian. How do I weed out the good ones from the rip offs?
I've looked through all kinds of forums but everyone has different opinions at different times so it's difficult to guage.
Any advice?

How does showering work? Do I just walk out of my room with nothing but a towel on and get to the bathroom that way? I just don't know how to do this without feeling creepy.

Were you homeschooled or something?
Have you never been to a gym or public pool?

Either do exactly what you said - walk out of your room with nothing but a towel (just remember to bring clothes to change into). Or walk in with your jammies on, or whatever you're currently wearing, and strip down once you're in the bathroom (just remember to bring a change of clothes).

Is going abroad alone on holidays worth it if you are a socially inept nerd?

I've always gone with my family or friends but this summer, none are availible to go on holiday with me.

It's the best if you're a socially inept nerd, you'll get more out of it by being forced to interact with people
>>
>>1244790
assuming you're not a total shut in; there will be a point where you'll be so starved for communication that you'll start talking to people and realize being social isn't a big deal. This is especially true on vacation.
