If you're rich you have plenty of money to afford air conditioning in your mansions, what happens when you go outside in the summer? Going to feel like shit constantly.

Never been to USA. But i'd imagine any temperate climate state on the coast outside of the main cities/ crime zones would be good.
Probably Maine, Vermont region.

Hey /trv/, my girlfriend and I are travelling to Europe on the 11th of this month. We are flying United because we were able to get round trip tickets from ATL - MXP for about $630 each.

We have been debating what kind of baggage we should use for our trip and we decided to just bring two larger backpacks along for our carry-on to store clothes, and bring one Kopack security backpack for the super important stuff (Eurail Pass, Passports, Electronics).

The only thing is, the kopack is technically too large to be considered a personal item. It's about two inches too wide and two inches too tall. We won't be stuffing this bag by any stretch of the imagination, It's just for the important stuff. Our other two bags are stuffed full and are a little too large in some areas where it bulges out to be carry-on size. I can squeeze it to make them smaller since they are just backpacks stuffed with clothes, and the packs themselves are pretty flexible.

I'm a little worried that the Jews at United are going to try and make me check the bags. We each get one checked bag for free, so I'm not worried too much about the money, but we are trying to do everything we can to avoid checking them because we have two layovers on the way there. One in EWR for four hours, and one in MUC for four hours. In MUC we switch to Lufthansa for our final stretch to MXP. If anything I've ever heard about United is true, we will be delayed at least a little bit. Since we are switching airlines at that time, it is no longer the responsibility of United to try and make a reasonable effort to get us on that flight. If we miss it, we miss it, and we'll have to try and work something else out. Or at least that's the way I understand it.

I've been trying to come up with a plan to avoid talking to United agents. This plan includes doing self check in at a kiosk and printing my boarding pass there, and avoiding the gate agents until it's time to actually board.

Do any of you have experience flying United?
How likely are they to stop me and ask to measure my bags?
Do they make you put the bag in one of those little measuring things at the gate? (pic related)

I've flown southwest many times in the past, and they are super cool about baggage, but this is my first time on an international flight, and first time with United.

General flight itinerary.

May 11
United
Fly from ATL to EWR
Fly from EWR to MUC
May 12
Lufthansa
Fly from MUC to MXP

June 1
Air Canada
Fly from MXP to YYZ
Over night layover
June 2 Fly from YYZ to ATL

I am planning on taking the Toronto Express to get to downtown Toronto and hang out a while, possibly stay in airbnb.
Is there anything you'd recommend for us to see, other than CN Tower?

Also, general baggage thread.

My layovers are not long enough to do anything here, but I will have a nice layover on the way back.
>>
If it ever becomes a problem, just get really angry and yell "What are you gonna do? Drag me away and make my mouth bleed?!"
>>
Wait a minute, are carry-on limits actually enforced?

My last flight, I literally could not fit my bag in one of those measuring things. When I checked in, I even admitted to the counter agent that I was 2 kilograms over the limit. No one told me to do anything.

Who are these people? What do they do? How can they afford this kind of lifestyle? This is all so alien to me.

Am i right to assume that they were born into wealth? Not that i want to, (i like to stay at home) but this is just so surreal.

Though they are often born into some amount of wealth, they are making quite a bit of money as influencers. Brands will give them thousands just to leave a product somewhere in the frame.

They are all extremely miserable to be around.

I'm 20 travelling alone from north west italy to ireland after i'm done working there in July.

Basically it means travelling through through South East of France to North West France where the boats go to Ireland from. Or I'll take a boat to south England and a train to Wales after, before another boat to Ireland.

I'm not taking a flight because its high tourist season and will cost ~ 200 euros when i will be booking. And I want to bring cheap booze back.

Any of you know if a cheap way of going through France at short notice. And know nice regional cities in southern France, Central France, or north along the way. Or maybe south West England either. I will probably stay for around 5 days, and don't want to spend too much or operate in no go zone areas.

The ferry to Dublin leaves from Cherbourg, which is very close to the Normandy beaches. If you're a burger those are pretty dang cool.

What I think you're asking is if there is a cheap/easy way take the Clermont-Tours-Le Mans route to Cherbourg from Marseille as opposed to going through Paris. The answer for a 20 year old is no. The answer to somebody 25 and over is yes. None of the car rental agencies will even rent to you at age 20, and the prices for those 21-25 are prohibitive.

You're really probably off just flying unless you are dying to explore central France, which I think is a pretty cool place if you can drive yourself around. But you cant, so its either train or plane for you.
>>
>>1244737

I don't really have any choice because I live in Ireland and those days are the only time i'll be able to afford a holiday before October/ November at least. I've been in Normandy, Brittany, and Picardie before so I prefer to go

Really want to go Dartmoor National Park in England, might go there.

Is there much to do in Lyon?

I have family in Paris so I'll probably spend some time there too.
>>
>>1244772
All roads in France lead to Paris, so if you're going there you can then go anywhere with minimal effort.

St. Petersburg, FL to Mt. Vernon, IL in one day, then Mt. Vernon to Burlington, CO the next day.
2 drivers
Can it be done?

I know it is ambitious, but my co-driver only has a limited time for the trip and I want to maximize the time in Colorado.

>spending at least four total days driving
Take a plane. Are you that poor?

I find 13hrs reasonably easy to do alone, I did 20hrs straight once but it was tough. So yes it's certainly possible.

That's assuming that you're american and used to long-distance driving, though. If you're from Europe and trying to do this, forget it, just fly.

50% for rent is very much, but pretty common in bigger cities. I pay ~25% of my income after taxes in Vienna for a 2 bedroom apt with 50m2.

I'm planning a drive to Alaska from Washington and I was wondering what the gas prices are like in British Columbia. The only things I could find on google were on "gas buddy" and it didn't explain what any of the units were, just that gas in BC was 124.6. I don't know what that would be. I assume something per liters.

How hard is it to move firearms across the border as well? I have a couple rifles and a pistol I'm taking.
6 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>1244347
it's usually 1.30 canadian per liter
so about 1 usd per quart

you can only bring rifles up if you have a Canadian license (PAL), a pistol would be a different one (RPAL), and you'd have to drive it around in a locked box, probably have to inform the police where you're driving with it first

would be easier to take your guns if you just ferry from washington to alaska
>>
>>1244347
Yeah about 4 dollars a gallon was what it was when i did the drive.

Transporting guns i beleive there are forms that you will need to fill out. I do not know the procedure but there are legal ways to accomplish this
>>
it is often cheaper once the night rolls around. Also anywhere around Vancouver is way more expensive as there are a lot of taxes. I wouldn't bother with the guns as the border people are really picky. Make sure you get in touch with the immigration people before you come and triple check your paperwork. The rifles will be less problematic than the pistol.

Hey /trv/, would love to get some advice from experienced kiwis regarding NZ.

>Arriving on early January
>*Not* interested in sunny beaches and happy-go-lucky "yacht resort" type of landscapes
>Fiords, mountaintops, wetlands, lush forests etc. is where it's at for me

I've done basic research and it looks like the south island is much more to my taste. I'm stoked for sites such as Milford, Routeburn, Kepler, Mt. Cook, Roys Peak, and also Okarito and Fox Glacier seem lovely.
On the north island I'm keen on Tongariro, Rotorua, Mt. Ruapehu, Rangipo Desert.

My main question to you guys is how would you recommend to plan such a trip, given that I have approx. 1-2 months to spend in the country, and am planning to rely solely on public transportation (assuming that it's possible to get to most of the main sites by bus/train... it is, right?). I'm wondering if I should even skip the north island altogether. What would you recommend?

Many thanks in advance

start in auckland
visit waitakere ranges n shit, stay around auckland for 3 days

head to Taranaki through forgotten world Highway, its the most isolated place in the north island at night, fucking beautiful, filled with possums n shit, creepy af but just fucking terrific (pic related, «««muh photography»»»)
stay in stratford for a couple of days, easiest access to mt taranaki

go down to Tongariro NP, stay around Turangi area, easy access to the mountains (mt doom (not actual name) and tongariro and ruapehu), hit up rotorua too, this should take you a week maybe less.

head down to wellington from the eastern highways though napier, rural towns desu but im sure you'll like it

wellington is shit, take the ferry down to south island to nelson or something.

don't spend too long in nelson, a night or two if you need rest, headstr8 to the east coast (canterbury) on the coastal drive, there are seals on the shore, if they're chill you can feed them if yuo're good with animals (i did).

chch is shit, nothing there spend a night or two to rest, you'll need it

head down to otago region, dunedin, check out the farms n shit, clear night sky (which desu is everywhere in nz but down south you may get to see southern lights).

head to queenstown and thusly the alps. you can spend however long you want there, i reckon at least a week just hiking around the national park(s) and camping.

if you did read the whole thing, good on ya.
If you're keen for a meet, we could get drinks one night in auckland, and if you're keen-er, we could have a roadie I could drive you around north island (and maybe south island too). post contact if you're keen or ask for mine in this thread

Is it dangerous to take trains between Hungary/Serbia and around the Balkans?

It has ALWAYS been safer to be on trains when actual working people and high season, aka commuters, are out and about taking the trains to get places too. I have never once heard it was a good idea to take a night train, or even to sleep on a train.

I've only been to Budapest once, and it was in Autumn for the wine festival in Buda castle (whenever that is but it was filled with upper class nice people throughout), and I read all that you are supposed to be wary about the crime, to avoid taxis, buses and metro, all three, so I did. I avoided the drug taking scene in the island park. Upon arrival were swarmed in a frightening en masse kind of way when arriving at the train station...comparable to india crowds really... and we fiddled around until everyone else left and took the last taxi driver though debated an Uber, and he was awesome. The only other taxis I took were the hotel vetted driver who dropped us into the city a couple times. I walked near the cathedral to cafes and shopping but daylight hours, and up and down Andrassy. There was a creepy absence of workers at the baths, no supervision in the Széchenyi pool anywhere, so I'd say be careful there from frottage in the water to men packed into the steam room to dark basement halls.

Your link outlines that someone in their cabin going through a purse at your head means they were incapacitated (drunk drugged or really out of it) and therefore they didn't wake when the boogeyman was in their room, no matter how discreet, I would wake if someone was upon me like that. It also shows that the ticket taker took the tickets to ensure they weren't linked to his "section" of the train when and if they reported the crime. If they had a printout (prepaid online), they'd have proof. Without knowing that train, I can't say if the doors could even have been secured (outward opening?). I've barred hotel doors, though, with a chair or even my luggage against it. There's an alarm for $8 on amazon.

I have taken plenty of night trains and never had a problem. It's a good way to save money on a hotel and travel time for sightseeing.

Watch out for virgin-snatching vampires, duh.

FWIW I've lived in and travelled around Serbia/Hungary/Romania my whole life. I sometimes come across rude conductors, senile old folk, hobos, gypsies (it's always gypsies), an occasional pickpocket (see: gypsies) but have never felt threatened anywhere in the least, and nowhere near as much as travelling in the UK, France and Belgium. I've been commuting via intercity trains and buses since I was a child.

The first thing everyone asks me when I tell them where I'm from is "is it safe there", meanwhile their cities are ravaged by Middle-Easterners and they don't seem that bothered by it.

Lots of young folk take the overnight Belgrade - Budapest train when they go to concerts/Exit festival if the other way around. I've heard rumours about refugees crowding around both stations, but haven't been recently to check. Just don't be stupid, don't do anything suspicious/illegal and be prepared to hear some utterly devastating English.
>>1243000
I've been on a number of night trains though mainly Prague - Vienna - Budapest and back. It's fine.

Hey /trv/, I'm going to Iceland on my own next month. I'm just in Reykjavik for a few days, not planning on hiring a car. What can I see and do outide the Blue Lagoon/Golden Circle/Whale-watching stuff? What should I avoid? Any cheapish places to eat and drink or am I gonna get raped pricewise?

_Blue Lagoon (well no time limit here, but you could really laze it into 5+ hours if you take a nap on the 2nd floor in one of those comfy chairs and go out for a second lap or steam, or book ahead the massage, or even a lunch, pack your conditioner and your crocs)
_Golden Circle is 1/2 day bus tour, longer if you drive yourself and linger at the geysirs for a bite to eat
_Whale watching may or may not happen, will depend on the weather, but within Reykjavik, you can walk up and down Laugavegur, to the cathedral tower, enjoy an evening dining, but watch out the food and alcohol, especially, is expensive, so might wanna grab some duty free to pre-drink in your hotel room. You can walk down to the opera house. There's a volcano museum with film. Islenska (icelandic bar) has a good menu to sample the oddities and best of iceland both, at a reasonable all at once price.
https://grapevine.is/culture/food/review/2014/06/04/to-be-or-not-to-be-icelandic/
That magazine grapevine is a good source to check for your dates of travel to find something to do, like live music.
>>
Get a car friend. You'll have so many more opportunities. I went with 3 other people and we stayed in an air bnb in alftanes. Having a car was nice because we could drive to reykjavik, drive the golden circle and took a 600 mile round trip to see the moss fields and stopped at volcanos, towns, and waterfalls we saw along the way. Get a car if you have the money. Plus, bus tours don't give you the desired freedom.
>>
>>1243393
also, we didn't go to the blue lagoon to save money, but we did go to the secret lagoon. ive heard the blue is better but it is crowded if you go in the on-season. one of the best experiences was going to the hot pools at the local ymca/athletic/bath house. Super relaxing and we even talked with some of the locals.

I also recommend researching if you are going to buy a lopapeysa because some people sell fakes made in china that are inspected here and make a tag that says made in iceland. also, food in the city can be expensive or a long wait so be ready.

Or Australia, Irland...

Other option is try to be a flight attendent on Emirates but the selection is hard, from what I heard.

>Disneyland
>Ocean Park
>Mong Kok Ladies' Market (if you're a dude, don't let the name mislead you)
>Tai O Fishing Village
>Tian Tan Buddha
>Yuen Po Bird Garden
There's more, but I gotta go take a dump.

Alright, so there's also:

>Kowloon Park
>Hong Kong Park
>Chi Lin Nunnery
>Nan Lian Garden (they also have an amazing restaurant in there; seriously the best meal I've had in recent memory)
>Victoria Harbour/Symphony of Lights
>Tim Ho Wan (this is a restaurant franchise; they have some pretty good dim sum, and they're famous for being one of the world's lowest-priced Michelin Star restaurants)
Hell, even just walking around aimlessly is surprisingly fun.
>>
>>1235002
>Tian Tan Buddha
Not too far from there, there's also
>Ngong Ping Village
>Po Lin Monastery
>Lantau Peak
>Wisdom Path
I got the most bang for my buck in this area of Lantau Island.
