I have an intense fear of flying that keeps getting worse, even though I fly at least once a year and have flown across oceans several times. I'll spend weeks or months leading up to a flight panicking as soon as I hear anything about planes. this year I want to see Iceland, but am thinking of backing out because of the anxiety. how can I come to terms that two people I've never met are locking me in a giant tube that could malfunction, so I can continue to travel?

>giant tube that could malfunction

it's nearly 100 times more likely that you die in a car accident rather than a plane crash.
>>
>>1249031
The next generation will find it retard dumb that we actually let the majority of the population from the age of 16 drive around in death boxes. Being in a car is the leading cause of accidental death
>>
>>1249031
Not OP but people with a fear of flying aren't retarded, we all know how safe it can be compared to other forms of travel. That's why it's an irrational fear. I personally have no idea why I'm afraid of flying, particularly because I used to be completely fine with it. I had a period of not flying of about 2 years and after that dreaded having to fly again for no reason that I can see.

I did pizza delivery for a while and that was paid in straight cash, same with pizza making. Could I go to the good old USA and get a job like that? I feel like an employer would rather have a white boy than a Mexican no?

So I'm fucking done with Canada. I have bo idea how this place has such a good reputation internationally when it's so fucking cold and boring. I've lived in Van, Tor and now Cal and I'm done with it, I travel for work and I've seen the whole place and its a libcuck wasteland of taxation.

So anyway, now that I'm done school I've been to Taiwan and Vietnam and its bangin' there so I need advice on quitting my job (that took four months to get cause fuck the economy). Has anyone done this? I have a few ideas to sustain long term travel (at least 6 months I want to do SEA).

1. Travel and teach English (I have a friend that will hook me up in Hanoi but I heard Hanoi is crazier than HCMC and that place was nuts).

2. Just save money and quit my job and go on a one way ticket. I save about 1000 CAD per month (because shit is so overpriced here). How much should be a good cushion to save for a year?

3. Do a PhD for 3 years, maybe in Taipei and travel around from home base as flights are cheaper then (I loved Taipei). Plus on this is I'll feel like I'm doing something in life and not being degenerate like most """backpackers""".

How well do international degrees hold up back in the US?

Also, wouldn't it be super difficult to get an advanced degree in a foreign language?

Planning on visiting Pakistan, India, maybe Cambodia, maybe (doubtfully) Thailand, Laos, maybe Vietnam and probably the Philippines.

Would anyone happen to know which country out of that list would be the cheapest to fly to and start my trek?

Also, I noticed that a 2 way ticket was some how cheaper than a 1 way ticket in some cases.

Does anyone know an international airline that allows you to have a flex return date?
>>
>>1248465

Depends where your comming from lad.

Thailand will probably be the cheapest, Laos the most expensive.

Also a reminder that Pakistan should not be considered a tourist destination, its not a very safe or stable country. If you want to go to the Northern parts of Pakistan to trek, you can get a very similar experience in India, China or Nepal. Feel free to go but know the risks.

I'm going to say "No." But I can see why somebody else would say "Yes."

What past history the city had has been almost totally bulldozed and replaced with garish glass and chrome and neon architecture. What they have built is, intentionally, a city designed for the convenience of banking and desperate mass-produced fun.

That said, like every other city in the world, it's full of people. And unlike some cities, the infrastructure is almost intentionally designed to make it difficult to make human contact with them --and that's where the soul of the city, if you will, is hidden.

If you dig, you can do it -- and in the meantime, if you want to have the kitschy, snow-ski-indoors, world's-biggest-whatever sort of glitzy fun, you can do that to keep busy.

whats the best city to live in for an artist???

I want to live in a city for a half a year where i can focus on developing my art (traditional drawing/painting)

it is essential that the city has a very low cost of living, and i only speak english (unfortunately) so im limited in this sense.

...cities/countries that interest me are Kiev, China, st. petersburg, italy, spain, mexico, belgrade, bucharest...

...cities/countries I'm NOT interested in are Berlin, france, London, USA... too expensive/pretentious...

I am wondering if anyone knows of other city/countries which might be what im looking for?

I already have some chops but i want to be in a rich environment and potentially connect with other artists, galleries and sell my work to buy me some time, even if its just to tourists...

I've also traveled a fair amount so im not afraid of new things.

Furthermore, things i like:
-cheap rent
-cheap/good food
-old architecture
-warm weather
-women
-people who will understand english
-water i can swim in

...any ideas would be appreciated!

Looking for advice on where to go in South America.

I've been riding a motorbike down from Canada the last 9 months. I'm currently in Bogota. So far Colombia has been pretty boring, and now that I'm getting into the Andes it's cold and miserable. Where can I go, headed vaguely south, that's cheap and warm and interesting?

I'm tempted to head asap for the Amazon in Peru. What would I be missing on the way?

Tourism is very developed, and domestic tourism is huge, so any place nice is super touristy and super crowded.

Plus the food is super bland and boring.

Beautiful landscapes though.
>>
>>1247747
I wasn't that impressed by Colombia either, apart from the women and music/dancing. If you haven't had a colombian girlfriend yet definitely don't leave before that, you'd be missing out. Basically anywhere else in Colombia should be nicer weather than Bogota, maybe check out Bucaramanga (and the extreme sports pueblo nearby) or Medellin if you haven't already.

Anyway, to answer your question - what about Ecuador? It's definitely more touristy than Colombia but IMO the tourist sites are more worthwhile, the nature there is amazing.

The Amazon isn't that amazing to wander around IMO, it just feels like a big, hot, flat forest. The whole amazon region has a distinct culture from the rest of Peru/Brazil/etc though, so that's kinda cool to see. And if you have any interest in Ayahuasca, Iquitos is certainly the place to do it (not sure how you'd get your bike there though).

If you get to Iquitos to your bike, I'd also highly recommend considering putting your bike on a boat to Leticia/Tabatinga, then to Manaus (easiest place to get laid in the world atm), then on to the brazilian coast. The Brazilian coast would be 1000x more fun and interesting than the Peru/Bolivia route down.

Hey guys, not here to shill for my company or anything but wanted to share my experience with those who are just starting to college, looking to change their career, or want a good work/travel balance.

There are quite a few healthcare staffing agencies that hire Healthcare/Medical Travelers. These Travelers are typically consist of: RN (nurse), PT (Physical Therapy), OT (Occupational Therapist), and SLP (Speech-Language Pathologist). If you want to know more about these professions, Google them, but they are all more or less fairly quick degrees, guaranteed employment, and good pay. Personally, I am an OT and went to uni for 5 years.

Anyway these companies will pretty much hire you no matter what unless you have a felony or some crazy shit like that. You are assigned a 'recruiter' who is basically the liaison between you and hospitals/clinics all over the country that need temporary help (typically 3 months).

You tell your recruiter where you want to go (you will nee to get your professional license in whichever states you plan to go to) and what types of settings you want to work in (acute/subacute/SNF/home health...etc.) and they submit you to openings that match your preferences. Those hospitals/clinics contact you and give you their offers and you pick your favorite and you're off to your assignment. Most companies will reimburse you for your licensing and travel costs.

Once you're setup with your assignment, your company either sets you up with housing or they give you a bunch of money per week and you figure it out on your own (I do AirBnB/cl/hostels). You also get a meals & incidentals stipend (I currently get $550 and $250 per week, respectively). You also get a base pay per week from the clinic/hospital you are contracted with. This varies depending on location, type of setting, level of skill required, and your level of experience. (Mine is currently $1350/week).

About halfway through your current assignment.......cont'd below...
25 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
...your company will contact you to plan your next assignment and get that set up.

Once your current assignment ends, you will head out to your next assignment.

This is where it gets even better. In between assignments, you can take extra time off. Most people typically do 1-2 weeks but you can do longer if you want. I use this as an opportunity to do a roadtrip from my current location to the next and see lots of attractions and state/national parks along the way.

In short, I make about $100k as a new grad out of college with 5 years of schooling and I get to travel wherever I want in the US all subsidized by my employer and I get to take an extra long vacation/road trip every 3 months.

Feel free to ask questions!
>>
Can you do this while being a med student, currently in 4th year in U. De Chile.
To which countries have you been assigned?
Which agencies have you used?

Cheers.
>>
>>1246444
The type of agency I work with is strictly US, but they let you travel all over the different US states.

There are probably agencies that do international assignments but not that I know of off the top of my head. It is probably very different as international licensing is a lot of red tape.

I've currently been to Florida, Oregon, California, and Washington.

Im sick of of my life situation and I wanna run somewhere. Problem Im broke, got only few hundred euro. However I have a bunch of points for my local airplane company saved up so I can fly anywhere in Europe for free. I'd like to get out of Europe but Im pretty desperate so I think I'll fly somewhere closer now and then move on after a while.

Im a christian and I thought heck I might as well stay in a monastery for a while. Anything that gets me out of my life here. I wouldnt stay for too long maybe a month max, but is this possible? Do some christian monasteries take in people who'll work for accomodation and some food? Is this a thing even anymore? Plz let me know

Also any tips on what to do after that? I mean Im pretty broke so how do I move on after that. I'd like to leave Europe after that and just hobo around in Japan or something

Thx

I've been in asia for a few months now and I've been thinking about buying a motorbike

will you actually end up saying any money on buses etc?
public busses are good value, but I'm constantly struggling to get fair prices to tourist locations

how hard will it be to re-sell?
I hear a lot of tourists have to basically give their bike away because they bought used, or didn't leave enough time to sell it

can't say I've ever ridden a bike before, so I'm also wondering if I'l end up as one of the hundreds of scraped up farangs; or if they get injured mainly because they are drunk fuckwits

You still here OP?

>Will you actually end up saying any money on buses etc?
Depends on how long you're there for, but most likely. Also, the best part about having a bike is the enormous freedom it gives you to go anywhere at any time.

>how hard will it be to re-sell?
I bought and sold three bikes while in SEA and had no major problems. With one of the bikes, I was stupid and waited until 1 day before I had to sell it to cross a border, and ended up having to sell it very cheap. But the other two I sold for the exact price that I bought them for.
>I hear a lot of tourists have to basically give their bike away because they bought used, or didn't leave enough time to sell it
Like I said, along as you give yourself a couple days and park it in a backpacker area with a cardboard sign, you'll be alright. Worst comes worst, you go to a local bike shop and they buy it from you for 50% of its value (which is better than nothing).

>can't say I've ever ridden a bike before, so I'm also wondering if I'l end up as one of the hundreds of scraped up farangs; or if they get injured mainly because they are drunk fuckwits
Asian roads are no joke. The drivers (especially buss drivers) are cutthroat and show no mercy. That being said, you just gotta be smart and stay out of their way. Give yourself a large amount of room between other vehicles and be cautious. DO NOT ride around in flip-flops and shorts. That's the quickest way to get seriously injured. Wear boots, pants, and even some riding armor if you can find some. I rode around for 9 months and whenever I was going long distance or even just out of town, I wore a full sleeve chest protector which saved me from bad road rash twice.
You can see the chest protector in my pic. And my GF wore a heavy motorcycle jacket that had armor in it as well.

Any more questions?
>>
Realize that you'll save money on taxis, save time in walking, and so on too.

However given this:

>can't say I've ever ridden a bike before

Then there's a very, very good chance that all of your savings on taxis will be overshadowed by the amount that you spend on medical bills.

Riding out there is quite different, it's not more or less predictable like it is in the US, or at least not in the same way. When I was riding around Vietnam long-distance I'd be forced off the road literally every few hours, sometimes with very little warning when I went around a corner and there was someone coming straight at me in my lane. I could only do it because I had plenty of experience riding elsewhere in SEA and the US first.

Learn to ride first via a motorcycle safety course where you live. In the US there's a subsidized course that you can take that gets you your license at the end too, if you pass the test. I'd do that, then spend some time riding around tranquil spots in SEA (like the Thai islands that just have two-lane roads, or maybe Pai). After a bunch of that you can decide whether you want to ride across the country.

Personally I went around Vietnam and Thailand for a couple months on a motorcycle, then had a fall doing it in Myanmar, and decided that it wasn't really worth the risk. But it's really hands-down the best way to travel through SEA if you accept the risk.
