Hi, am i better off learning Russian rather than Ukrainian/ Belarusian, if plan on visiting Ukraine and Belarus?

You can use Russian in Ukraine and Belarus; in some parts of UA (Odessa for sure, and more or less all other big cities apart from maybe Lviv, which considers itself the Ukrainian Cultural Heartland) you hear a lot more Russian than Ukrainian on the street. And I believe Minsk, at least, is predominantly Russian-speaking as well. Meanwhile, although Belarusian and Ukrainian will be predominant in a lot of mostly rural areas, you can't use either language effectively outside the countries' borders.

So in short, yeah. If you intend to visit both Ukraine and Belarus Russian it's probably your single most useful language. I speak decent Russian, and no Ukrainian at all, and I had very effective communication.

> I did actually try to speak a little bit of Ukrainian from a phrase book, causing a nice lady at the Odessa bus station to mistake me for a Pole and try (badly) to speak to me in Polish. Gave up and stuck with Russian thereafter, with great results.
>>
shut up jake
>>
>>1251816
it depend on how good you are with languages. Good Russian will let you communicate just fine, and it will open you some nice possibilities

On the other hand, if you're going to learn the language quite poorly, the native one should be of more use than poorly spoken foreign language.

>Lviv, which considers itself the Ukrainian Cultural Heartland
that's funny, for seventy years ago it was still Polish.

I'm planning to go to Japan this summer, first to take part in volunteer project, and then I wanted to stay at my friend's house, but that guy stopped replying (guess a lot of work, lol). So I'm thinking about finding someone on couchsurfing. How reliable are these guys from couchsurfing? Maybe I should arrange with several people just in case? And another thing is plane tickets. The cheapest option I have seen for the first dates of July returning on the first dates of August is 800 euro, while for June(about two weeks from now) it's about 500. Why is it so? Because it's June or because only two weeks left? Give some advice please, guys. Stories are also very welcome.

You ever slept in the bushes near an airport for a night because hotels are really expensive? Is it a retarded idea?

Why not just sleep in the airport like a normal person and change gates every few hours?
>>
>>1250233
wtf
>>
>>1250233
I did it once in Autria and for three nights in a row in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. I enjoyed it.

The idea's pretty good, just don't be suspicious. Also, if an airport has a big traffic, they won't let you sleep too well.
Keep in mind, that if you encounter any problems, you may just sleep inside the building.

See the "stupid reasons to travel" thread for the answer to that... I'm slightly amazed they let me in, as I spent most of the 18 hours travel time getting pissed, and had difficulty standing straight when I got to Immigration. I blame the Iranians at Attaturk airport...

If anyone has got anything in the Bishkek area they think I should check out, post it and I'll see what I can do...

Where I can go without a european citizenship?

I intend to get my german citizen but until that I would like to leave for Holland or Australia, for example.

I am brazilian.

>>
>german citizenship

Fix'd.

Another question: if I get that european passport, I would have the same rights? Like, study in a university for free or be in the military/police forces?
>>
>>1253653
Yes if you get the citizenship you get the same rights/obligations as every other citizen of that nation.

No universities aren't free. You don't pay much for tuition but you will pay a hefty price just to cover your daily costs
>german student cities are expensive, so 800€ for small room an another 400€ for food is about the minimum.

You could get some BAFÖG but that would mean that a university would recognize your brazilian school education as on pair with the german abitur and your german is on a C1 or higher level.
>that will never happen
Else you won't set a foot into a german university.
>>

What do you mean?

Kind of a small thing, but can we please get the picture of the stickied post fucking changed? I'm so sick of Carl Sagan's mug it's such an eyesore... I'd say half a fucking decade is a good enough run for the pic. Please? Mods? Janitor? Does /trv/ even have mods? Just something innocuous like a picture of the Earth would be nice...

Realistically, how further east could one go starting from Berkeley, California, out west in a car?

So I have 3 friends and we're planning on traveling east-ward throughout the U.S to explore the country. We have pooled around 20 thousand dollars (plus each of us have credit cards), and the car we're traveling in is brand new.

Realistically, how far east ward would we be able to go while still being able to go back?

Thanks.

I've driven coast to coast

Virginia Beach VA to Santa Monica. you can do it in a week or less, I did it in 2 with around 700 bucks and had a blast. Feel free to ask anything.
>>
>>1250211
Heyo thanks!
Did you do many stops? I was wondering if we pooled enough money but damn, 700?

How was it?
>>
With $20k and a brand new car your only restraint is time. The longest drive I've done in a straight shot is Atlanta to Boston which was about 20 hours, including stops for gas, food, etc. That drive was about 1/3 of the distance that it would be to go from California to somewhere like say New York or Boston in the north east.

So it would technicely be feasible to go west coast to east coast in 3 days if you hauled ass, slept in rotations while driving, and lived off rest stop snacks and fast food, but you wouldn't be exploring much that way either.

Really you've just got to reconcile how much time you've got for your trip with how many hours a day you're all willing to sit in the car staring at the highway and there's your answer.

Don't go here, Phoenix is as far south as you want to go generally. Everything fun is in the north and north west of Phoenix. Aside from like 2 indian sites nothing really to do in Tuscon other than get mugged by mexicans.

Sedona is great lazy river is fun to float down in the summer see some ho, flagstaff is great, Tuscon is horrible the roads, people, and food is all crap. It's only plus is that it is dirt cheap, that person must have been trolling you, or has never spent more than a few hours there. I live in Phoenix and can telly you the north/northwest have the best parts of the state.

You can
>go inside an old valcano
>see sedona(pic extremely related)
>get cool native american food
>flagstaff obversatory
>skii'ing in the winter is best around
>meteor crater
>lazy river
>some really old towns

I've heard it's a place where Silicon Valley X-illionaires pay their asses off and go live their dream of being young and edgy once again and it's been completely ruined since 2010.
>>
>>1253589
>it's been completely ruined since 2010
Why? Is it due to media exposure?
>>
>>1253594
>>1253603
I figured someone was going to start by talking about how ruined it was.

It's typically described as being ruined by the fact that it's much too big, too many rich people fly in and camp in deluxe prefab camps that they pay others to build for them, and too many less-rich people camp out in plush RVs and act just as spectators, not really participating in artsy stuff or giving anything to those around them.

Sometimes people complain that it's gone commercial, but this is in my experience not accurate--still no ads, no corporate branding, nothing officially for sale except coffee and ice (sold by the pseudo-nonprofit that puts the whole shebang on). Tickets are expensive and more money is around, but nobody except for maybe a handful of drug dealers is making money at the festival.

All of these claims save the commercialization are arguably true. It's too big, too many rich assholes do their own thing that is not very communally oriented, and there are always lots of voyeur types who don't participate actively. But these claims are much older than 2010--people have been saying it since I first went in 2003, and probably before that.

I've been twice, both many years ago now, but have a bunch of friends--mostly 40something artists, DJs, and bohemians rather than little rich kids from Silicon Valley--for whom it remains a major part of their lives. Almost all of them still go, and I recommend it at least once.

Alongside the bullshit, there's still a lot of good art made by sincere weirdos, a lot of interesting parties and experiences, and (un)healthy doses of sex and drugs (although it gets more and more full of undercover cops every year, so don't be too incautious with any chemical use) if you dig any of those things. Too many people and too many dance parties for my taste, but that was true even 14 years ago.

i'm thinking of applying for a work holiday to australia. i heard from one of my korean friends that she did it and worked at a coffee shop there.

but how do aussies feel about americans basically stealing jobs? i've never met one before and all the aussies on /int/ scare me with their banter.

>>1252707
One thing I think you should consider is that aussies understand the vagabond travel idea. They like their holidays and long holidays at that. It'll be a bonding point.

But, imagine aussies as like 1970s americans, where there is only recently desegregation kind of mentalities. There is a bit of an insular nature to them, and they aren't too sweet to minorities. I don't think Americans fall into that niche definition but if you aren't british-descent, but some other nationality, it might be that you are discriminated against on sight, but then it'll soften when they find out you're American.
>>
>>1252717
>One thing I think you should consider is that aussies understand the vagabond travel idea.

I'm not a vagabond travel or anything of that sort, I just graduated and I don't have a job. I don't want to stay at my parents, I need to get out and put distance between them and me.
>>
>>1252717

>it'll soften when they find out you're American.

Not really, maybe people will treat you better than Afghans, Indians and Chinese but Americans are often on the bottom of the list in terms of western countries (especially if your southern).

In terms of stealing jobs people dont really care because most people on working holidays end up working on like fruit farms in the middle of nowhere or being scammed and working for $5 an hour for a labour company in a big city.

For obvious reasons, most employers don't want backpackers (cause they are unreliable as fuck), this means any job that an Australian wants (that doesn't have outstanding issues) will get preference over.

To be frank, save up money while your at home and come here for a shorter amount of time instead of spending 5 months working on a fruit farm in central nsw sharing your accommodation with 7 Vietnamese men that don't speak any English.

Are you just staying in the hotel the whole time? From what I remember of it the tourist-y areas are somewhat isolated from the cities, but they are very nice. I spent two weeks in Suva, it was a pretty relaxed city. There was military around the place and there were checkpoints but I don't recall there being any issues. The roads are shithouse and everyone just gets cheap taxis everywhere. Native Fijians are lovely people, but there are a ton of Indians in Fiji who are a bit less polite but still no problems. Can't say much about Nadi.

This is why it's a bad idea. Chances are you won't find travel as fun as you had imagined and you'll be stuck waiting for your return flight after wasting tons of time and money on tickets and paperwork. Especially since your first trip would be quite ambitious.
But then again, it might be a blast. As for the idea itself, all that matters is whether you think it's fun, even if most would find it retarded.
