Thank God I'm not alone in the "fuck owls" party.

This game, as a game and not a kemoshota delivery service, reminds me of a cross between all the bullshit NES games like Clash at Demonhead, some of the better explorative NES games like Spelunker II, and everything about Dark Souls that I hated (bonfires, reliance on learning enemy patterns through experience). The control weirdness, especially the ladders and odd jump arc, gives me flashbacks in a bittersweet way. It makes the game feel more authentic to its roots, but I'm not sure at this point if the control oddity will fuck with the late game.

The music loop's pretty cool, too, so points for that.

It gets better and more fair after the initial "fuck you, this ain't Yoshi's Story with kemoshota" period. It's possible to go completely daft and ignore the subweapon, lucky charm and heart container that are basically adjacent to where you start, but once you get all three it gets a lot better. Hell, spear-throwers and those fucking owls become chumps once you pick up the shield, which the game heavily encourages you to do.

The only complaints I have are that the checkpoints are a little sparse (in dungeon one, it's before a pit you can't climb out of, so if you lose to the boss you're SOL and have to redo half the dungeon: NES style or not, that's pretty annoying) and the EXP system seems to be a time-delayed healing system only, which encourages grinding rooms for HP and slowing the game in the process.
