/trash/ OC Drawthread #1, Mew Not Steal!

A drawthread by drawfags FOR Drawfags, only allowing stuff that /aco/ doesn't allow, like Furry. Post original, drawn art of your OCs and draw art for other Drawfag's OCs. No bases, traces, or game snapshots, please.

>1.) If you're re-posting an OC from a previous thread, you MUST ( I'LL GIVE YOU A COOKIE IF YOU DO ) draw a new picture of them. If you aren't an artist then define an aspect of the character you haven't before, design a new outfit for them, or develop their past a bit more if there are some things left to be desired.

>2.) Never use the same OP image twice. If you want to make a new thread, draw a new OP.

Mostly a thread for drawfags to have fun and mess around with other's OCs, so just be cool to one-another.

>Artist Challenge
Draw your OC indulging in New Years fun.

>Bonus Challenge.
Since this is the first thread, draw the OC posted below yours.

Actually i was requesting a drawing my OCs, so i'll just post them here. Oddly enough the link to the thread in /aco/ didn't work.

So, here are they, greg (on the right) and lillian (on the left). Greg is kind of shy, and quiet, lillian on the other hand is happy and optimistic most of the time.

They both work on her dad's antique store, she took over the shop after her dad retired, and greg was hired after a while.

I Still have to work more on their backstory.

The request was a drawing of lillian wearing a skimpy seashell bikini, and greg next to her, wearing spats/bike shorts or maybe a thong, with a flustered expression.

I made the request because i wanted to do the /aco/ oc thread's skimpy outfit challenge, but i can't draw right now for the reasons i mentioned before.

For the New Year, I've been redesigning my OC's to be more sfw adaptable and have more solid designs. This being the most recent one, I was wondering what others thought. Note: The shorts are a bag of holding so to speak.
>>
>>780021
Does she not have a tail? What animal is she supposed to be, mostly?
>>
>>780085
The idea is she has a tail. but fitting in the tail in this drawing didn't really work out. In concept, she's meant to be a wolf anthro
>>
>>780021
So she is the alpha male?
>>
>>780251
Well, the back of the shorts has an Omega symbol on it. I hope somebody else down the line gets the reference.

Give me a concept and I can craft a character from it, but I can't draw for shit. So I wound up commissioning this one from an artist. If anyone has a species and a setting I can blast out a character concept in minutes. In the meantime, enjoy this girl! (Pronouns were her thing, I didn't bother arguing about it)

Heliotrope, SU oc, generally happy go lucky, if a bit. temperamental. Will withhold information in case I need to respost her later, but I will give idea for lewd at least. She does happen to be in a relationship with canon gem Jasper in one of the RPs I do with her, to note.

This is not my art, to note.

That was me, actually.

Coborundum here is about four "Stevens" tall. Her gimmick is that she's completely OP, so the world is like cardboard to her, which isn't terribly good in social situations. She is a complete shrinking violet for that reason and is shy and reclusive as a result.
>>
>>785236
>>785374
you mentioning height reminds me, I probably should give SOME extra details to heli, for sake of drawing. She is roughly pearl/lapis height, and her hair is actually meant to be semi translucent. like its see through to an extent, giving it a glowing look in the light

Why not try drawing her once? If you've looked at the thread, the Kobold that's been worked on started incorporating aspects of the other designs (The blue eyes and eyebrow spots of the red one onto the brown one, specifically)

This sort of thing where different elements of different sketches get mixed together is super common in character design. Just start with a frame and try out different parts you've come up with to see what looks good.

If you can't do it, then it's an area where you need to practice.

How do I do that? If I cannot understand what the details or broad strokes look like after a 100 different incarnations I'm no more confident the 101th time. Well I can instantly tell you that you need to stop making those quick over the top pen movements and take it way slower.
For example instead of making one quick squiqqly line that resembles hair, slowly make the hair out.
You're doing this because of your skill level, so you just wing it and make things resemble what you think it should look like with those squiqqles.
I suggest that you stop it.
The result will be shit either way, but you're going to learn if you go slower and actually think what things are supposed to look like.

If you keep on going like this, what happens is that your pen control isn't going to improve and you're going to be drawing crappy lines for a long long time.
Also for the love of god don't learn to draw humans from anime.

>>819021
These are a bit better, but try refining the drawings even more.
To get less scribbly lines, do fewer strokes.
Remember to have a bunch of references available and study them.

Hey thanks! So you're saying to do fewer lines, but take even longer and slower with them? And the problem I have with the hair is that it's very stylized and it's consistency doesn't follow in most cases. That sort of curliness doesn't "exist" naturally without a lot of grooming and artistic license so it's hard to figure, aside from the broad flow.

How do I define it more and accomplish more with less persay? These sketches were supposed to "teach" me to be confident with an idea enough so that I can just draw it ideally without having to reference or trace back at all. (Which most consider un-art like, plus not like I'll always have a source onhand)
>Also for the love of god don't learn to draw humans from anime
Never do! Although I'll admit the style looks godawful. Could really benefit from some realism. I'm not anywhere at that point where I can do anything but these cartoony clusterfucks.
>>
>>819239
How about, rather than a hundres sketches, you try to focus on ONE a bit longer than normal, using the tools available in your illustration program to fiddle with things.

>>819283
Because I'm not good at it? That's why I practice. I feel like if I'll learn more making 1000 shitty drawings than one slightly-less shitty drawing. It's usually quantity over Quality for me.

Like I said I don't even know how to define anything. After drawing the initial sketch I just find myself drawing over the same thing a dozen times and each new layer and "Refinement" is just as shitty as the previous, until I realize I'm going in circles.

Like so. I've spent the past few minutes messing with the helmet, but I don't know what it is you want; that's why its sort of hard to ask another artist to put it together for you.
>>
>>819313
Then perhaps deeper, more detailed sketching is what you need to practice. A little patience can go a long way, as once you solidify a design, it gets far easier to draw it from memory. Spend some time congealing the design so that you have just one to work with.

>>819314

>Spend some time congealing the design so that you have just one to work with.
That's the purpose of me drawing so many, I gotta work on that.
>Then perhaps deeper, more detailed sketching is what you need to practice
This is what I struggle with. How do I make a more "detailed sketch", but with less lines and doing each of them far more carefully? Should it be more elaborate, more conceptually concise? Or literally just "more detailed", without making it too cluttered regardless.
>>
>>819239

I get where you're coming from, I hate using references myself and I want to be able to draw everything from imagination.
It's very much doable, but hard as shit, since it requires a massive library of images in your head.
The only way to get them there, is to think dedicate a lot of time to thinking about these things and studying pictures.
Also one good way to improve your mind in this regard is to take a reference, but from a completely different angle.
Then turn it in your mind and put it on paper, which is something I like doing if I'm to use references.

Still, when we're talking about this level of skill, you need to use every resource possible to help you on your way.
I suggest that you start copying pictures you like.
You can even trace them early on to get your hand used to what the form is supposed to look like.
It's very beneficial to do this.

>That sort of curliness doesn't "exist" naturally without a lot of grooming and artistic license so it's hard to figure, aside from the broad flow.
When it comes to this, it's the same thing as stylized bodies and everything else that requires artistic license.
What you need is a very good knowledge of realistic things like anatomy etc..
Then you can later on move to more stylized things, yet still have them grounded in reality, which makes them work infinitely better.
You need to know the rules before you can bend them.

Blob it. Make a complete, blank slate, then start adding features to it.
>>819390
Try to complete a drawing. A lot of the stuff I see here looks like abandoned sketches. Just spend more time trying to make a finished piece. Slapping some of your sketch concepts onto a blob, such as seen above, on a separate layer can help.

She's a cynocephaly, or DOG HEAD.
>>
>>819410
>Also one good way to improve your mind in this regard is to take a reference, but from a completely different angle.
That actually sounds like a really good idea. I hadn't even thought about that, could really help.

What do you think of the idea of re-drawing every one of these references, but only from the style and vantage of the other references? I wondered if cross comparing them a lot would help me nail down one single concept.

>What you need is a very good knowledge of realistic things like anatomy etc..
I find this even harder for superficial things like hair and lightening, but I get what you're saying. Guess before I start with ridiculous curly-stylized hair I should work with practical matters.

>>819452
So make silhouettes and outlines basically? Just the shapes, no lines?
>>
>>819624
Not really. The goal is to make something that looks finished. Some artists blob out the basic shape, then add details in white, but that's usually for a from-scratch character. Since you have a bunch of sketches, your goal is to see which of those look best on a completed image. It's like putting clothes on a mannequin.

Whichever way gets something that looks complete.
>>
>>819624

If you're planning on doing the rotate in your mind thing, I suggest that you start with something simple.
Like a simple shape or something.
Then put that on paper.
A basic shape because you're able to whip out any 3D program and see how well you did.
You first need to get a better hang of the basics before moving onto the more advanced stuff.

And when it comes to applying the realism based knowledge to other things, trust me when you start getting the hang of the basic things like proper anatomy, it WILL carry on to everything you do.
I would have never thought that drawing will improve my sculpting skills, but it did and also the other way around.
Or that my traditional skills are going to skyrocket without even practicing them, just from using a tablet.
Everything is connected, but this is something you realize when you try new things and see that they suddenly come easily to you.

The most important thing to keep in mind is that you won't learn art fast.
That's just not happening, for anyone.
So cutting too many corners is just going to bite you in the ass.
I suggest that you check out Sycra from youtube.
https://www.youtube.com/user/Sycra

Oh believe me, I know. I've been drawing for over 10 years now, most of what's done just feels like an exercise in futility. I have entire sketchbooks literally just filled with nothing but circles and shape practice. Still I understand it just requires a lot of patience.

I'm relatively new to digital art, only having been doing it for 3ish years I'd say. It took me the first 2 years to just try to learn how to hold the pen and get used to the coordination.

>>
>>819899

So Blob it out, get the shape down > Rough Idea

Once I get a design going is there any way to go about getting smooth linework and crisp clean edges? >didn't draw but pic related
>>
>>819961

First of all I'd recommend Manga Studio for this.
It's infinitely better for lining that kinda stuff than Photoshop.
Don't use the stabilizers though, that shit only becomes a crutch in the long run and kinda kills the pen control aspect.

The process of lining is pretty simple, yet can take a lot of time, especially since the speed of having the right kinda lines depends 100% on your pen control.
>Lower the opacity of your sketch layer.
>Make a layer on top of it and start lining.
>Draw a single line on top of the sketch, not good erase.
>Draw a single line on top of the sketch, not good erase.
>Draw it, works good move on to another line.
It's basically just a lot of trial and error.
>>
>>820063
No offense but, that kind of sounds like a huge clutch in itself. In most actual drawing you cannot "Undo" short of erasing the shit out of your paper every 5 seconds. Shouldn't one learn to compensate without relying on Layers and unlimited Undos? i dunno, it just sounds kind of lazy as far as technical skills go.

It's like in basketball, if you have unlimited balls to shoot of course you're going to make the shot. That's not going to mean anything once you go to play on the court in real-time.
>>
>>820136

>Shouldn't one learn to compensate without relying on Layers and unlimited Undos?
Which is pretty much what you're doing with the unlimited undos.
You're teacing your hand and brain the forms and before too long, you can get them right almost instantly without any erasing.

I too like learning to do things with the most basic tools possible and not relying on the more advanced stuff before learning how the end result is achived with other ways, but still there's a point where you need to leave the idea of "well that's just like cheating" and embrace the advances technology has brought us.
Undo and layers are the most basic stuff the tech provides, it's not "cheating" in any way and they don't really make your life any easier.
Compared to let's say, someone using colour blender tool to get a smooth blending without learning how to blend and use colours in the first place, while cranking up the stabilizers to a max.
That's a totally different thing.
>>
>>820136

Kids these days with their photoshops and their computers and their tubey paints and their paper and their canvas and shit.
You can't do real art unless you mix them yourself from animal carcasses and berries and paint them in your cave with a chewed stick. THEN you're an artist!
>>

Alright, some shit is okay to cheat with (layers, undos) but other shit (stabilizers and cop-out tools) aren't, got it.

I'll take what's been said here and see where it goes. If I improve I'll report back, if not guess I won't. Appreciate the advice!
>>
>>820351

I'd say that keep them at a level where they aren't interfering with your pen control in any other program or media.
I had my stabilizers at 20 a Manga Studio for a while, didn't really even think about it, went back to Photoshop after some months and holy shit did my pen control suck ass.
Took some time to get the lines working in PS again.

Now I keep them at 5, any lower and the pen gets kinda jittery, that's probably a driver issue though.
That's a level where it doesn't have any effect on my pen control anywhere else.
