In the normie news today...

>My daughter, Jordan, started asking me why her dolls don't look just like her when she was four years old. We had just purchased her first Bitty Baby from Chicago's American Girl Store. She had a matching outfit. They had the same hair color.

>The problem? Jordan was born with one hand and she has always wanted one of her American Girl dolls to look just like her. For now, that is not possible. Limb difference parents from across the country have requested the consideration for a custom limb-different doll. Each time, the company replies with a "no."

>I applaud American Girl for releasing a diabetes kit as an accessory in 2016. I would love to see the company continue to expand ways to help more girls feel like they really have a "Truly Me" doll.

AG collector here.

It started with crutches. Then they made hearing aids and hypo-allergic lunches, epipens, dolls without hair. now literally fucking everyone wants their doll catered to them. There was also a girl who wanted 'dolls that had open heart surgery scars' and the problem is each and every fucking parent is just as, if not more entitled than the kid.

Is it me or is it always little girls asking "Mommy, why doesn't this toy look like me?"

I mean you never hear little boys go "Mommy, why doesn't this T-rex look like me?" or "Mommy, how come I wasn't born with tank treads and a giant laser?".

I mean hell, you want a one arm doll so badly, just cut the damn arm off. 90% of dolls end up half bald, naked and missing limbs anyway, so I don't really see the problem here.

Kids born with diabetes could be any weight. A lot are otherwise very healthy. My uncle has been a hardcore outdoorsman his whole life but he has to have insulin shots. He can't get the pump because he's a diver. You're thinking of type 2 diabetes, the fat people one.
>>
>>5417589
Actually you'd be surprised, yeah having two hands is optimal but you can get along quite well with one real hand and a hook prosthetic.

Though if you're stupid enough to get the "Realistic" electric hand then you're just gimping yourself on purpose.

This. I don't need something to be exactly like me to feel empathy. I feel empathy for everyone, even people who have been cunts to me before. I don't see why being able to 'identify' with things is such a big fucking issue these days.

>I feel empathy for everyone!
>Why can't those fucking cripples just like normal people toys dammit.
>>
>>5418416
People can feel empathy and also identify with things that are different than them, but why should that mean they can't want things that are like them? If a little girl wants dolls that are missing limbs like her, why can't she ask for them?
>>
>>5418480
Maybe she can learn a valuable lesson and make her fucking own.
>>
>>5418484
Dolls that are different than the norm won't replace the ones that already saturate the market. You don't need to worry.
>>
>>5418489
It's not about dolls or the market, it's about this disgusting liberal culture of "what about me?!!!!??!!!!" "Cater to meeeeeeee". Grow the fuck up and make your gimp kid a gimp doll.
>>
>>5418502
Easy to say when stuff already panders to you
>>
>>5418506

better idea:
The reason these companies dont make these products is because the client base is too small to warrant changing their operation, no profit.

However since there is clearly an audience, open a business that sells nothing but "different" dolls, missing limbs or in some other way identifying with kids who need it.

Then, you've tailored your business model from the start to a select clientelle, you're making money, they get their dolls, and the free market wins again.

This isn't about catering or privilege, its about running a business.

Having dolls of more than one race is good. Having dolls with a disability that makes the kid feel alienated is also good, though I think it'd be easier to just make an accessory pack that's sold separately.
Honestly, it's the Tumblrina mentality that ruins everything. One girl wanting a handless arm does not mean an entire line of handless dolls should be made, because they cost money to make and have to be sold to the general population, the vast majority of which have two hands. As everyone is saying, cut the hand off. It's easy. Tumblr mentality says that ALL AG dolls should be 'unconventionally beautiful' (so ugly, because unconventional beauty that's actually beautiful makes obese fakebois uncomfortable), be any shade of skin that is not white, and be equipped with a whole hospital, because muh disability means they can only live in vicarious tragedy through a doll that resembles them down to the bad teeth, lazy eye, and choose-your-own gender and ethnicity.
>>
With all the money they spent on the dolls over the years, they coulda gotten her a prosthetic arm.

Hey, I barely got any toys as a kid and when I did, hey were cheapo knockoffs. I'd rather have an arm really.

Or maybe they're just waiting for her to grow up so it'd only be a one time purchase?
>>
>>5417416
>they finally make a figure of me
>I'm fucking dead
>>
Don't make a handicap doll
>Boohoo you greedy companies aren't catering to my needs!

Make handicap doll
> Boohoo you scumbag companies are insensitive and exploiting the disabled!

Wut do.
>>
>>5419413
A prosthetic arm is never a one time purchase, they wear out and you need to replace them every few years, often times a lot sooner when the person is a kid.

Still, a decent hook prosthetic would be was more worth the money than some dolls.

Wouldn't surprise me though if her parents are the kind of people who think the "Realistic" hand is actually a good option, instead of just an ugly and unusable money sink.
>>
>>5417292
Sounds like shaky parenting if she made it to the point of forming full sentences without being braced for the fact that she's abnormal.

And fuck those parents for passing the blame onto the company instead of just making the world's easiest custom. Clearly the manufacturers grasp that they'd get a maximum of a dozen sales from that mold.
>>
>>5419421

Its not even difficult on an American Girl type doll. Its soft vinyl limbs. Cut it, stick some epoxy in the hollow spot, color match it maybe, done.

As an example, my brother was in a pretty bad accident as a kid and ended up with head injuries. 4 years old with a cartoony 3 Stooges bandage and Frankenstein forehead stitches. He was pretty freaked out about it, and my grandma decided to make his teddy match him to make him feel less alone while in the hospital. A few quick stitches and a bit of gauze, maybe 10 minutes of effort and the kid was happy. She even eventually snipped a little 'scar' into his fur when the stitches came out. 20 years later and he still has that bear.
>>
>>5417583
From a practical standpoint, yes. For a diabetic doll they only need an insulin kit and a special lunch kit, separately purchaseable. For a limb difference doll they'd have to make specific new limbs for each possible combination (are they missing the whole arm, only up to the elbow, only their hand? etc) and basically custom-build each one as ordered (as is their bodies are mass built per color and then heads just popped on for the characters and stockpiled in the warehouse). Would cost more money and be barely profitable if at all.
