86 Movie Edition

Is this thing going to be available stateside? I guess I wouldn't mind importing it if the price is right. Really wish they packaged almost any other figure than Hot Rod, though. Wasn't like, fucking everyone on the Junk planet when the Junkions were introduced? Kup, Arcee, Springer... hell, it'd be awesome if they redid the packaging a bit and put Ultra Magnus in there.
It wasn't to be, though.
Speaking of which I just added Wreck-Gar
what are some of your favorite figures I should add?
I had a dream last night that Hastak Devastator in combined mode had a transformation and you could transform him into literally just a giant rectangle. Just a big rectangle. It was a really nice, seamless rectangle with neat purple patterns, but still.
In the dream I was extremely sad because (in real life) I'd already put in orders for a 3P Devy and I remember thinking "No 3P Devastator can turn into a rectangle..."
Anyway, I thought that Devastator could turn into a rectangle for a while after waking up, and was kind of bummed the whole time, but then I looked at some pictures and reality came back into effect.
Have Sea Clamp and Cicadacon switched places in terms of colors?
Neat colors, though.
Does anyone else own either Masterpiece Tracks or Masterpiece Road Rage? I'm not sure how the neck is supposed to work. The hinge it's on is nice and tight and is able to hold the head up at the right position just fine, but beneath it there's just... nothing. Nothing to brace it, nothing to snap into. Which means that when I'm posing her head I have to pull up slightly, otherwise she'll do her best imitation of a turtle and sink her head below her shoulders.
Was it really designed this way? I keep wondering if I'm missing something.
I like that mold. It's arm ball joints are sometimes wonky, but it's a fun toy.
I have the flat cartoon-colored one, so I'm definitely getting that boxed set. I doubt it'll be $100, and that's what that set would run you with eBay prices.
While I agree that it's a decent figure and certainly not the worst, I do believe that Hot Rod kind of does deserve an updated figure. I don't mind if it's deluxe or voyager, but he should get a better one.
My Tracks' head has a click when I lift it up. And while there's some play in it between the click and its maximum elevation, it won't go down past the click without applying a little force. In your pic you certainly seem to be raising it high enough to lock, so I would assume its a QC problem.
I'm a whore for Transformers that function as what they transform into. I just got a G1 Percy and I have a Ravage USB drive but what others are out here besides a 200$ soundwave MP3 player?
Especially considering other Classics figures from the '86 movie are receiving updates before Rodimus already, such as Galvatron and Cyclonus. I wouldn't even mind if Rodimus snuck in like Galvatron as a headmaster for Titan Returns.
I bet we'll get a Hotrod or a Rodimus in Titans Return, and I'm hoping that the second half of the line is Target "titan"masters since they said that all -masters are titanmasters now, it's a blanket term.
>buying multiples of the same figure because of a forced meme
Momma would be so proud if she hadn't killed herself over how much sweat she had to scrub out of your wal Mart fedoras and guy fawkes masks.
And here I am waiting on my grand scourge to complete my black power prime.
I wanted a ferguson prime too but in the end I made optimus maximus and my black power prime will be made with existing figures.
Why waste money on doubling up when I can use what I already have?
>Grand scourge body
>Air Raid Arm
>Hoist future Foot
>Hound Future Skate
Haven't worked out the other arm yet but aiming for a mix of my darkest characters.
I really don't want 2 air raids and 2 hoist with 2 swindles, fuck that
Rumble and Frenzy headphones who are decent, but too large/heavy.
Also Optimus with iPod dock trailer. I had this and it's pretty great. You also get a new, very accurate head for Optimus.
>buying multiples of a toy made in taiwan, designed by the japanese
>supporting US economy
So there's a video out showing the transformation of MP Ironhide (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_bEJ-KSxEow&feature=youtu.be). It's only of an unpainted test shot, though. Makes me wonder, so far all we've seen of Ironhide are unpainted test shots. Usually by now we get in-hand pictures of the actual toy or at least the box. Wonder if Ironhide will be delayed?
>besides a 200$ soundwave MP3 player?
Anon, I bought that Soundwave for 50 bucks off Mandarake a few weeks ago. In fact another 50 dollar one was sold a few days ago
You could always buy the Soundwave cassete player from the 80s, which does cost around $200
>Is it worth getting into this hobby?
You have to choose between spending your money on cancer research or buying plastic trinkets to fulfill your personal fantasy.
I think it's worth it.
Depends which line, the robots in disguise line (as in what's in shops now) are easiest and cheapest to get BUT the japanese versions are superior in terms of paint deco (transformers adventure) as well as some variations that you may not get elsewhere in that line.
Combiner wars maybe harder to find especially for older figures depending on the size class, better off getting the Unite Warriors sets but since only superion and menasor are the only standard releases expect to pay more overall.
As for mp's how extensive are you going to collect, alot of the older ones may be pricey second hand, bootlegs are an option if you have the tolerance.
But right now you should be fine with the fan favs getting re-releases like optimus prime, ultra magnus and wheeljack, if you want mp's pick the guys you like, getting them all will cost you.
Now the best place to get mp's is straight from the source, Japan, if you want something that's been and gone try mandarake for second hand ones, combiner wars and robots in disguise are in local shops though availability may vary.
Aye m8 guess we're in the same boat.
Getting the proper soundwave is gonna be a bitch, I caved and got the year of the goat for $129, and myers had him on sale for $99 around christmas time which was a bitch, all I can suggest is mandarake for him but its mostly sound blaster's with ratbat (exclusive to this black repaint), shame the hasbro mp soundwave is the most expensive one (but it did come all the cassettes, much like the YOTG one).
Starscream was a bit easier for me, got the recent hasbro one for about $140 from toys r us but we had very limited numbers, better off ringing around, though the mold has some issues and the fittings on mine are fucked.
If you want the takara (japanese one) there is one on ebay for $250 (first result), no flight stand like the hasbro BUT you get a spiffy crown and cape, and this guy selling the asia reissue so it comes with a collector coin if you're into that sorta thing.
Do avoid mp megatron, aside from being kinda shitty looking he's technically illegal as he counts as a replica firearm, I just got lucky with mine, some states allow him but you need a gun license and gun locker.
I find going on ebay for the hasbro ones to be a safe bet cost wise though they may not hold a candle to the more pricy takara ones.
Also mp shockwave is still up for pre-order, try hlj, amiami or premiumcollectables.com.au for him and others where available.
>Is it worth getting into this hobby
Just for the MPs. Retail is shit right now, except for the cheap little legends figures which are at least justified in their compromises. Although they're not even that cheap anymore.
>Were do i start? Are the figures easy to find to buy?
Well, if you like Masterpiece, start there. Unfortunately, they're not easy to find/buy. You need to import them from a Japanese dealer site like HLJ, AmiAmi or Anime Export. And most older figures are completely sold out. You could try a local importer like BBTS or TFsource, but their prices are insane. Your other option is ebay, which opens you up to second hand, or buying the KOs, and quality varies greatly on those, but they are readily available and comparatively cheap, so there's that.
To be honest, I never understand people who ask if they should get into a certain hobby. Is it worth it? I think that's up to you, isn't it? You'd think if you cared enough to start collecting something, you'd put in the time to research and look at the product and decide whether or not you want to spend your money on it for yourself. You shouldn't have to be talked into a hobby. In fact, you should be so into it that nobody can talk you out of it. I feel like there's this weird imperative nowadays to be "into" something just so you can carve a notch on your belt.
>as if nothing is worth buying right now other than that?
As a collector, no, I don't feel there is anything else worth buying, besides MP and the legends class figures like I mentioned. Everything deluxe-leader class is just riddled with lowered QC and compromises. I don't feel the need to buy toys just to fill out some '80s cartoon cast checklist. I want toys that are impressive to look at and smartly engineered, and right now, most retail releases aren't that. And I'm not bitching about it, I'm just not buying. Vote with your wallet, as they say.
I do buy the legends class toys because they are actually better engineered than most deluxe figures, since we're wading through repaint wars. The little figures give me something quick to transform and fun to fiddle with, while MPs give me a complex, detailed figure. Everything else just sort of occupies this space in between that I don't feel the need for.
>are you hearing yourself?
You're the one who is sperging out that people aren't buying the same stuff that you're buying. Chill.
yeah me too, I only buy the cool ones like Soundwave, Exhaust, and Star Saber
People get so fuckin excited for Sideswipe and Prowl and whoever, but those guys barely did shit in the show.
I buy because of the design, truth be told I kinda like prowl and sideswipe for their alt modes, got me star saber exhaust as well.
Really, its just opinion, nothing wrong with those buying shitty designs if they grew up with the character, hence how I can tolerate owning all of the current mp11 hasbro repaints, same for those buying what's cool looking.
Its because of this people actually like the UW/CW devastator at all.
I disliked the proportions but I grew up without a devy to call my own as a kid, so I myself got the UW.
Really the CW would of been enough seeing how its just devastator I want, but its the complete package and it does has the better g1 paint job without any touchup work
>but those guys barely did shit in the show.
>judging the value of a toy based on its prominence in a 30-year-old cartoon
Kek. Then you'd be overlooking the fact that the Datsun mold is easily the best of the MP cars. I really don't give a shit about whatever Smokescreen did in the show, but holy fuck his paint job and alt. mode are gorgeous.
Regardless of your thoughts on the Predacus set, I'm glad they're staying consistent with boxart and cards.
I skipped it because that skinny left arm just looks weird.
Voyager crabtank is fun though.
Still don't get why they used Rook for Tarantulas but whatever.
art's nice as fuck
I love Tarantulas, so I cant believe that Funpub Managed to screw up two releases for him in a row
>Motorcycle Tarantulas doesnt get a new head, while an Actionmaster and an unreleased toy do
>Rook Tarantulas has his Transmetal paint job even though he didnt have those colors on Cybertron
am I being nitpicky here? i dunno. i love the character so I just wanna see him done right
It probably would've been made better if they have him a buzzsaw type weapon instead of rooks jaws of life.
Funpub and hasbros obsession with giving the exact same weapons to every mold and it's reuse is stupid.
Hey Let’s take Jesus off the dashboard.
Got enough on his mind. I do agree with your opinion. Just buy what you like.
There's no true objective side to buying a toy. Everything is always subjective. Every design will always appeal to someone. The fact that someone thought, approved, and produced a toy is a proof of this.
Honestly I think the Ultra class, especially the updated one that came in the 10th anniversary 2-pack, is perfectly fine. This just looks unnecessary.
Call me when you have an updated Megatron that actually has a removable claw and is cartoon accurate. Which will most likely be never.
>yeah he used them as guns and as a jetpack.
Not really, in th show the jetpack was different from the cannons. The Robotmaster Beast Convoy got it right.
>I hope he's at least a big figure.
On the other hand, I expect it to a bit taller than a Voyager. Like an inch and a half less than the Ultra class Primal.
For some reason a huge Masterpiece Primal would feel wrong to me, and the new transformation would be more amazing if they include it in a smaller figure.
>Since there's gonna be an updated Optimus Primal, what are the chances of an updated Megatron, as well?
>MP 10 Convoy was released in 2011
>Still no new MP Megatron.
Don't count on it anytime soon.
My bet is unlikely. They'll never release any villains. Because even if you buy 10 Primals, they'll probably just do another maximal next.
Remember, Megatron wasn't the cool and calculating character we know him as in Beast Wars. In the Japanese dub, he was a shrieking coward.
We're talking about Masterpieces here. Most MP cars are good.
And Generations Rattrapp isn't that bad, I own the Takara one and is an OK figure for the price point, had zero problems with it.
Do you think that they're going to paint the whole thing like shitty 90's CGI texturing?
Toy Fair is right around the corner. We could get another MP BW figure announcement, and if they're going to do just two, Megatron is the next logical choice.
...Or they could mimic the Optimus/Bumblebee popularity thing and make Cheetor instead. But we've never really had a decent figure of him so I'd take that too.
Man, I just realized what butthurt would happen if we got MP Beast Megatron before MP G1 Megatron v2. Not that I care, I think G1 Megs looks pretty bland, while BW Megs has a nostalgic place in my heart.
I think the rumor was that MP Primal, Cheetor, and Rattrap are the ones we'll definitely see. Rattrap seems like an odd choice when Dinobot's around, and his last update is still pretty good.
>Do you think that they're going to paint the whole thing like shitty 90's CGI texturing?
I actually hope so, but painting the CGI fur over the whole figure seems to be asking too much, even for Takara.
Didn't say "all" because I didn't want to trigger the Bumblebee-deluxe-size-posting or the Ironhide-looks-bad-posting.
Now it's too late.
>Motormaster is better than Optimus
>Onslaught is better than Hot Spot
Will Leozack/Deathsaurus/whatever be better than Sky Lynx?
>Man, I just realized what butthurt would happen if we got MP Beast Megatron before MP G1 Megatron v2.
Now I want that too happen.
Masterpieces are a hard place to start. They're extremely expensive, especially since a ton of them are scalped to fuckall and back. You can even buy 3P shit cheaper than a lot of MP's because of how bad the scalping is, and most 3P's are overpriced as fuck.
>. They're extremely expensive, especially since a ton of them are scalped to fuckall and back. You can even buy 3P shit cheaper than a lot of MP's because of how bad the scalping is
Only if you don't know where to shop.Hint: use Mandarake. Barring the larger stuff like Starsaber, Starscream, and so on, MPs are still way cheaper than 3P stuff.
The original is still a great toy, this is just better. Expanding out of just collecting transformers has made me more picky, and also less complacent. This character had an updated figure only 4 years after the original version in the line. The original is still a better toy than most. But the newer version just feels more like a collector's figure.
All they've done is change the wings and the tip of the shuttle so it looks more like a hawk in beast mode, maybe it has a robot mode and they scrapped shuttle but i doubt it. Torso colors emulate leozak/jarugar beast is deathsaurus
>killed the hero of his show
>and a bunch of other ppoular characters
>never truly died, got updated
>well, ok, the update came with a new personality and looks so he technically died I guess
Yeah, no one else accomplished that shit in the 80's. You didn't see Cobra Commander nuking Duke and popping Snake Eyes in the chest, or Mumma-Ra buttfucking the cast of Thundercats to death.
BW Megatron barely managed to kill Dinobot, and couldn't even kill the rest of them when he had a whole planet at his disposal.
Onslaught has the hip issue fixed and doesn't have the ladder-through-the-crotch thing Hotspot has for bodymode, meaning Onslaught is a more stable body.
However, Onslaugt isn't as stable in bot mode, he's a little tipping prone even with the heel spurs they added, especially since Hotspot's ladder basically doubles as a figure stand for him, letting him pull off more poses and not be as tippy as Onslaught.
You must not remember the rule with cartoons. Robots can die violent deaths. Humans can't.
Also it's pretty nifty that you left out how BW megatron took over all of cybertron and made a race of evil henchmen with some of their generals being controlled by stolen maximal sparks.
Its cool though.
He is a big guy. I have him, not sure on his exact height as he's in storage at the moment. I have no issues with mine and I can't remember if there was anything to complain about beside the standard "NOT MUH 84-85 G1 GUY!!!"
>am I being nitpicky here?
>>Rook Tarantulas has his Transmetal paint job even though he didnt have those colors on Cybertron
For this part, yes. This isn't a pre-BW set, so it doesn't matter which set of colors he has. It IS a stupid mold for him though.
Yeah, they fit right in with other toys.
the proportions are all wrong
all wrong part 2
Luckily for you there's an alternate season 2 colour scheme version that you can do a headswap with.
Just see the TM colouring as the Tripredacus Council coming along with Ravage on the Earth mission.
Some changes must be made for the transformation to work, and the result still looks way more accurate to the cartoon than trying to make it look like a real gorilla, so your point is moot.
Primal is just a weird character to make a Transformer of. He's already a humanoid in his alt mode, so the transformation can only do so much. I think the Cybertron Primal had the most creative transformation by switching the legs and arms, but that's about it. He can't fold up into a box shape like a lot of other Transformers.
So yeah, the original 96 figure is still pretty solid, but I wouldn't mind plopping down MP money for one with more articulation and better paint aps. You kind of have to start with Primal, the hope is they'll do more than just him in the MP line.
I really want Blackarachnia, but I'm not holding my breath.
If the list of BW characters that need an MP are being decided based on how non-show-accurate their toys were, Terrorsaur is at the top of that list. His bot mode was sexy as fuck in the show, and had nothing to do with the toy. A decent MP figure of him would rock.
The problem is if you made that same list but listed it order of fan popularity, he'd probably be near the bottom.
His MP would require a lot of crazy engineering. Especially the wings. I didn't have a problem with his toy. I love good wingspans on figures.
I think it's a toss up between him and Dinobot. His toy sacrificed the look of the beast mode for the bot mode. Lets see how they could handle that.
In all honesty, why not just MP the original 10?
in the beginning there were Four Maximals
Dinobot, who later becomes a Maximal
With the number of Masterpieces out now I could see an eventual release of all original 10, with tools of Cheetor, Tarantuals, and Terrorsaur to make Tigertron, Black Arachnia, and Airazor respectively.
Only odd men out would season 2 and on, Transmetals, Fuzors, and maybe infernosince he was a shelfwarmer back in the day and kinda the old figure out as far as new creation and non retool.
>>> me and three friends go, none of them like TF's, just wanna take a road trip
>>> road trip
>>> 400$ box set
>>> tbhlolfam ugly red combiner only truly interested in having another combiner
>>> ravage, tarantulas (who I have no connection to so I don't care what mold he is, just happens to be my favorite mold) and ramhorn are cool
>>> 6th figure probably a legends
>>> extras which I will definitely buy
>>> 14 hour drive
>>> gas money
>>> paying for hotel
>>> 5 day trip
>>> ugly as fuck combiner head
>>> more colorful combiner than tripredacus
>>> better paintjobs no new head molds
basic stuff, but the botcon trip is going to be long, expensive as hell, but definitely a great time. the mayhem squad will be cool, but less satisfying. anyone have any experience at botcon? should I go? is it worth it?
>should I go? is it worth it?
Do you care about seeing panels firsthand and convention guests? If so, yes. If you can make do with internet reports on the panels and toy news, skip it and the hours waiting in lines you'd have to do. You can buy the convention toys online.
All right my mistake. I thought they were retools of each others figures. They are some of the only on screen character figures I don't own. But after seeing some figures online, I thought they looked similar.
Terrorsaur really deserves a deluxe or something. Basic class worked on a little guy like rattrap, but I don't remember Terrorsaur being that small.
Is Cybertron Primal worth picking up? The transformation looks pretty creative the way the toy basically turns upside down when switching modes- kinda like CW Silverbolt/Superion.
They make me think of some kind of hypothetical Machine Wars Inferno/Grapple
He's approximately this much fun.
Star Saber was the prototype Brave. Victory was the last series before Takara canceled Transformers to make Brave.
I can't quote the prices these days but like other Anon said Land Bison is a solid set. One of my personal favourites is Goldran. Or Great Goldran if you can swing it.
He's amazing especially if you're into the Japanese G1.
He's actually taller than Magnus.
You can get the Sonokong release for most of them and they're not KO's Takara still produces them but the company Sonokong is the one distributing them in Korea. GaoGaiGar is still fairly priced but anything before him they kinda tend to become pricey especially J-decker and Dagwon stuff.
I wonder how he compares, size wise, to UW Devastator... I kind of like the idea of just the two of them holding off, like, a half-dozen autobot combiners... If I can find a shelf big enough to pose it.
Blackarachnia needs to have her own mold. Both her robot and beast modes are like half the mass of Tarantulas, and I'm not talking about scale. She's thin with narrow shoulders, he's beefy with wide shoulders. We already had a repaint in 96 that tried to make BA out of Tarantulas and it was horrible.
I think I speak for the majority of fans hoping for a MP Blackarachnia when I say the goal should be to have a show-accurate robot mode. Even the spider mode should be secondary in my opinion.
I did. But it's more of a halfway step between Animated and BW BA. Also her tits sit way too low on her chest. It's the best we can get for the time being without a brand new mold, but an MP version would be perfect.
Does the plastic feel on-par with official TFs? I can stomach the simplification in some areas. People are already figuring out how to mod the lion mane and stuff.
I'm just holding out in case the company makes a v2 like with their hercules that fixes the giant heads and simplified combiner hands.
Allegedly there's like one guy who bought a shitload of them back in the day to form artificial scarcity for them (not to mention he also never got reissued in bw 10th and such). He's supposedly slowly letting them out into circulation to keep the prices up.
Keyword here is allegedly though.
True, but we're specifically talking about what Beast Wars MPs we'd like them to make since the assumption is the selection will be far more limited than G1 characters.
MP Arcee is a foregone conclusion unless the MP line ends.
>Also her tits sit way too low on her chest
Did you slide her tits all the way up Anon? Lots of people miss you can slide her chest up, to the point like every reviewer of her missed the chest slide and many people didn't realize it was there for over a week.
Though to be honest, the boob section sags down due to some disassembly.
They seem like they're pushed up all the way. They're resting flush against her spider eyes and the joints holding them are just balljoints. It leaves an unsightly gap below her neck and if you line her neck up with her spin (ie, keep her head up), her tits are at a weird angle.
I'm not sure how this picture was taken, though. That looks way better.
It's some sliding joint that includes her spider eyes. I literally just pushed with my thumbs and it clicked up into the right position, which greatly reduced the chest gap and made her tits rest in more or less the right place.
I do own Animated BA but it's either been to long since I transformed her (like, what 7 years? Cut me some slack) or I never knew how to properly transform her. Either way she's in storage at the moment.
nice idea painting the lower chest plate black, I think I'll do that
If I painted the back of her titties gold, would that eliminate some of the transulcent-ness? I dont wanna mess up the spider web design on the front
Her chest doesn't slide up anymore without serious brute force as it comes assembled.
You're forcing parts past their resistance points and scraping the hell out of the inner joint sections by forcing it up.
The original BA toy came assembled differently which is why it never had the issue to begin with.
I've done the "fix" on mine, works great now
>toy line drowning in retools
>new figure to be a new mold
It was news 18 years ago. The picture there has been posted here numerous times. Come back when you have a picture of the actual toy and not some silhouette where you can barely see anything.
ok fence sitting fag
Thank you Takara. Blast off looks great. I do wish they'd done a bit more new tooling on Vortex, the rotor looks really weird sitting that low on his back.
No UW Bruticus for you then.
There's zero chance of Bruticus being a retail release when Defensor was an exclusive because it included a new mold.
It'll be great when fags know what a decent picture is. We can see that blast off is different but nothing else. Those proportions and this shit quality are not doing it any favors.
Still can't tell if they fixed Brawl.
Well shut me up.
Looks like Bruticus might be retail after all. 15k yen is retail price, exclusives were 16.2k yen.
Also, June release date, can't wait.
It's a gimmickformer. When do they ever look like what they're supposed to look like? It's why the AOE line failed. We always had Fast Action Battlers and other kid-oriented toys, but AOE was the first time they took away the pocket-money pricepoints so they could be replaced by gimmickbots. Worst thing Hasbro ever did. Even they recognised it since they brought Legions back in RiD.
>S-STUPID TAKARA AND THEIR UGLY BRUTICUS
>B-B-BLAST OFF IS SO UGLY
>-I-I-I DIDNT WANT HIM ANYWAY
As predicted, blastoff looks great as a shuttle but obviously can't see robot mode well so we'll have to wait on that while apart from vortex's rotors the rest are the same parts wise.
Oh, and retail, fucking nice, guess he'll be a birthday present
Was expectingthem to do something better with the arms, something like how classics Astrotrain or Tankor arms become the noses of their altmdes, like this it looks like another aerialbot, like my custom..
Yes. We should. He's a spaceship. This is exactly what you faggots wanted. Surely there won't be any more crying about how ugly the new mold is
Oh wait i forgot it's transformers fans
I'll always consider him the Stringer Bell of Beast Wars. Cunning to a point but ultimately dumbified by reckless ambition and shitty crew.
I prefer religious zealot TM2 Megs. Now he actually got shit done and had to be taken down by a weird super alien birdcat that controlled the weather.
Man I miss Beast Wars.
