What is the most obscure 80's or 90's toyline you can think of?
>>4309959
There are a bunch of them. One of my favorite obscure lines that I never got as a kid (and I guess it was good I didn't) was Manglors.
Their gimmick was that you could pull and stretch them, and even rip off their limbs and then put them back together good as new. It didnt work very well.
http://www.i-mockery.com/minimocks/manglor-mountain/
>>4310061
I definitely remember Manglors. I only had one and, like you said, the reattaching limbs situation was awful.
>>4309959
The Other World, by Arco. I had a bunch of these as a kid and never knew anything about them.
>>4310123
I did too! I wonder if every kid had one or two Other World figures and had no idea what to do with them or where they came from.
>>4310135
I had these mini troll goblin dudes. They fought my Tron action figures because I didn't like mixing one-off figures with my "real" toys (SW, GIJ)
Might have been late 70s
Remember the time Matchbox made action figures?
>>4310173
That is the first time I've ever seen those. Good job. Any idea what line of toys they were from?
Robo Force by Galoob. Partially unknown, partially obscured by the other Robo Force that people really like.
>>4310212
Nice. Reminds me of ROM.
>>4310398
Yo, Galoob fucking killed it back in the late 80's and early 90's. All sorts of amazing stuff came out of there. Trash Bag Bunch, anyone?
>>4310370
Those were packed in with Arco's Otherworld figures.
>>4310061
God if I could get into that second position I would be sucking myself off forever.
The most obscure toy I collected as a kid (that I still remember anyway, had plenty of shit that I couldn't point out to you in a bin) was Z-Bots
The dude in the picture was my favorite, had a pretty sizable collection of these.
playmobil
>>4310830
I know how you feel. Loved z bots as a kid. This one was my favorate and one of the only ones I have left. He chills with my jaegers now.
I think yours was one of the ones that came with the burger king kids meal.
>>4310858
The Mysterians toy line was a group of six transforming figures released around 1984 by the company Marchon.
>>4310830
holy shit I had that guy, he was a burger king toy.
>>4310977
you win
>>4310977
I totally remember that. Best part about being a kid who loved transformers in the 80's was that my folks would always find odd "transforming robots" for me to add to playtime. Most of the stuff was fleamarket, but shit, who cares.
>>4311689
it was 99 cents!
>>4310977
looks like pic fused with a dalek
They fall just outside your date range but here's an obscure toyline from 1979 to 1981, X-ploratrons by Corgi.
A range of diecast scifi vehicles, actually pretty high quality construction with some nice gimmicks (compass, magnet, magnifying glass etc).
>>4310764
I like that space station. The clean and simple design reminds me of Playmobil. Imagine a line of toys like this made for 1:18 scale figures.
This one didn't even have a name of its own. It came packaged with a wide range of products as promo freebies.
never had these, but wanted them
>>4315880
my brother had these, not mighty max but still cool
That matchbox MUNTANTS line.
I had the helicopter/bat
>>4315885
had these bastards when I was a kid. one of the best toys I played it
THIS.
holyshit i loved these.
they led to my love of microman
>>4315899
I was just looking for this in my hard drive lol
For me I would have to say Construx, I think they were called? All of the sets I had for it either came from a learning store, or a smithsonian field trip. They were kinda space-themed, but they had electric motors and a control pad. You could make some really neat things with it.
>>4315897
i had something like that. it was a building with blue i beams and plastic panels for the walls
>>4315880
>tfw when the only ones I had were those four that were from McD's or BK
>>4315889
What are these? My google-fu is not strong.
>>4315918
Oh no! I remember now. Robotix are the ones I'm thinking of. Construxs were another sort of building toy, They were snap together and had a space theme. You could build some pretty cool stuff with Construx. We didn't know what they were called, so me and my brother just called them 'Space Legos'.
Robotix
These guys right here
Stationery dinosaur robots.
What were these called?
>>4316439
won a prize with a robot I made from these things and a walkman/speaker setup. The figures weren't bad for the time either
>>4317040
Oh, it was under two names.
Diplodos and Pocket Zaurus.
My favorite was the Pterodactyl scissors.
Loved these things.
Every Petland had this.
>>4315880
Same here. A neighbor kid had a big box of em at all times, but he never wanted to play with them, so I'd go to his house and just look at them while we played He-Man or some shit.
>>4315899
Well played
>>4316885
I know of everything in this thread except this. I have never seen these before, ever. Take all my internets and my oldest daughter.
>>4315899
i forgot about these.
>>4317066
Holy shitballs I had a blue one of these guys when I was just a little guy... I've been trying to figure out what they were called for years now. Thank you!
>>4315897
I never understood that one! I had the tower building, and you'd spend 20mins building it, and then put that little timer thing under it and it would lift it up and tip it over. Boom done....
>>4317419
>I never understood that one!
Your parents paid money for it.
That's all you need to understand about it.
>>4316885
I had the two in the middle of the top row! God that takes me back. I dont remember how I played with them, but I sure as fuck did!
Monster Man
Maybe not the most obscure, but I certainly didn't know anybody who had these guys when I was little
>>4317465
Every kid i knew at the time had at least 2 Battle Beasts. They showed the commercials in heavey rotation.
>>4317465
I had so many Battle Beasts.
Had a couple of the vehicles, too. The deer one and one other.
Mantech?
Speclatron
>>4315899
I was just looking at these on ebay earlier.
One good thing about obscure toylines is that if you manage to find a good condition sample, they're usually not too pricy...but on the flipside, finding them is the hard part. I found several of those Pepsi cans for some reason along with one loose...I dunno, the good guy HQ I guess, that transforms into a PC, but it was missing parts - and good luck tracking any of THAT shit down.
>>4317050
I still have the yellow taxi cab and a couple of the figures somewhere. As a kid, I discovered a major problem with all the ones whose limbs eject; the peg that actually held them to the torso were REALLY fucking fragile. I swear I went through like two that just broke and I think the last one I just flat out didn't play with because I was scared that'd break too.
Moondreamers. Had these as a kid and then kind of forgot about them. Came on toy and went on a wild hunt to figure out what they were, thank god people have started cataloging this sort of stuff.
>>4310123
I have a large collection of these figures, including a two pack still MIP.
They were called Cpsmo Crass in Italy, where they were also very popular.
>>4317732
>>4317736
Italian Cosmo Crass logo
>>4317747
I'd give a shit about Mordles if they made some awesome new hidden-monster figures that snapped them up. The old Rocks look great, the Bugs could use some work though.
>>4317378
I am like 99% sure that thing is just a ripoff of a Zoids mold, repurposed with an air pump for aquarium stuff. So, that might be what you're thinking of.
>>4317776
>Blockman is dead
>Microman is dead
>Henshin Cyborg is dead
;_;
these fuckin gnarly dude's!
>>4317507
DUDE! The comic book for these guys was great. I've got a handful of issues floating around somewhere. Not sure if this series was meant to be a spinoff of the Centurions or what, but man it was cool.
>>4317827
This thing predates Zoids by quite a bit though.
But speaking of those, anyone remember Technozoids? The initial launch of that toyline that never made it big until its relaunch about a decade later? Had the scorpion and one other; those shits were awesome.
Xpanders. Just looking at em makes me miss the days when miniature playsets where everywhere.
>>4318058
nah. it predates the american rerelease true.
but it's a zoids knockoff.
mostly parts from pegasuros on a new torso and legs.
guns look like mecmac molds
Infaceables
Their faces were made of balloon rubber and the gimmick was to turn the waist and then the rubber face would stretch over the molded monster face underneath. It was an interesting concept but poor execution. Baically just looked like weird flat face to weird lumpy face
since no one posted it yet, Trash Bag Bunch
>>4318423
they even had a 2 episode show
>>4318428
since someone posted food fight, here's another themed one, named Barnyard Commandos
>>4318423
That may have been obscure but me and all my friends had those toys when we grew up in the 90's. I live in Sweden btw.
>>4317918
>Mattel
The ones who claim that bendable parts cannot be made
This is probably the most obscure line I can think of. Bugmen of Insecta, released in 1983 from Multi-Toys Corp.
>>4318722
This is the first thing to be posted below the rocks bugs and things that is in any way obscure. Barnyard commandos, Food fighters,Trash bag bunch, mad balls, xpanders where all very commen place at the time they where available in stores. Barnyard commands kicked around for years in the discount stores after they where canceled and when they where new you would see a commercial for them ever 5th commercial.
>>4309959
rocklords rule
>>4310830
MAN, Z-bots are AWESOME
This. No one buy my female cousin had one of these growing up. I used to love the hell out of the engine and laser sounds. Iirc the front detached.
>>4309959
Does it count if you felt like you were the only kid who bought these?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yZSctFdNfFY
>>4320244
Neat - this was designed by the same guy that designed the ROM toy. Forgot his name but easy to look up. Cool electric toys of the 70s
>>4315864
Jesus christ.
You just hit me so hard in the nostalgia. Are you australian? What's it from?
I had a couple of these. First one died when I took it apart and couldn't get it back together again. It had a single motor and hugely complex transmission system of gears and shafts that gave it all the ranges of motion.
>>4321192
Nice! I have one of those still working in my garage... oh the memories.
>>4320747
That one was from some Kinder Egg, but I think the toys have appeared in other products in varying colors.
The ones I grew up with had different wheels and came in Ovaltine jars.
I'm still trying to find this line of vehicles with figures. All I can recall was that they were black with yellow highlights and definitely released in 1991 (same year I got a Game Gear).
>>4317776
I had a few of these as a kid... I would kill to have them again.
>>4321421
In Poland w had these in Milky way boxes.
>>4309959
Is this toy rare?
I got him when I was young from my aunt overseas and kept him since then, he wasn't really expensive on ebay
>>4317465
I remember those.
LIVE
>>4330182
It's amazing that website is still around after all these years. There's some great combinations there.
http://www.geocities.co.jp/Playtown/2614/sakio/review/MRR.html
>>4315885
Body Wars!!! God damn they were the best.
>>4320256
Completely counts. Thank you for bringing Attack Pack back into my life.
>>4326323
Definitely not expensive, but uncommon. Slimestone was hard to find on shelves, because he was shiny. I know it sounds like a stupid reason, but it's completely true.
>>4318434
i lost my shit at commodore fleece cardigan
>>4330182
>that drill placement
I think the most obscure had to be Gluzones. For how popular inarticulated minifigures are with toy collectors, I'm surprised no one remembers them.
>>4310977
Oh man, I had that dude. He was kinda shitty. But different.
Are you bad enough dude to play the Pianosaur?
>>4310977
...Brother?
>>4317918
I still have one of those somewhere.
It's mostly black with one eye and a pink rooted ponytail.
>>4318353
I remember a line similar to this of transforming military minifig playsets, but the ones I'm thinking of came in a drop crate style box and were modeled after weapons.
I distinctly remember a grenade that had fold out bits to become a base or a vehicle or something. Can't remember the other sets, possibly a pistol and compass. Probably released in the late 80's.
Any ideas?
>>4321421
Here in Mex. they used to sell them in 4 pack cards in wacky colors.
What's better than plastic soldiers? Spaemen!
I love how the robot still looks like a costumed person.
>>4321192
We had one of those in shop class in junior high.
>>4335524
Wow, that minicon made me nostalgia hard. I remember when I first got Unicron on Christmas. I still have it too.
All this nostalgia is the main reason I browse this board.
Also transformers armada is best transformers
>>4335591
I'm old enough to remember when TF collectors were shitting on TF armada as soon as the first few Toy Fair photos came out. I remember being super pumped for it, though.
>>4318423
>>4318456
Me and my friends had some of these. (Finland reporting in, heh.) Some of them were pretty fun looking, even if there wasn't any articulation. But the gimmick - a dissolving bag - was a pain in the butt. In the commercial it just vanished, but in reality it would leave your sink full of suspicious-looking green glops.
Anyhoo. I don't have a picture to show, but can anyone recognize a similar toyline... they came in blind bags, sort of like different goblin like teams or armies? Maybe they had roles like chess-pieces, or something? I only had two of them, I think. One that had a army-helmet (he belonged to the "army team") and one that was like a jester, belonging to the "circus group", or something? Does this ring any bells to anyone? I got them around early-to-mid 90s.
Anyone remember what I'm about to describe? It was a 90's toy line. You would collect these really tiny robot figures, they weren't very well articulated but they were very colorful, and I mean tiny. Like.... maybe an inch high. And you could put them inside of a separately sold bigger robot.
>>4335645
Actually, searching for Trash bag bunch revealed the other line too: they were called Miniboglins, apparently. Hmm. I'll have to research a bit...
>>4335532
oh shit, I used to buy these. along with the mini construction crew
>>4335652
Z-Bots?
BRAVESTARR!
>>4335761
So obscure it hurts.
>>4317465
I couldn't *avoid* getting these as a kid. Everybody seemed to have them, and every birthday party seemed to give them away as party favors. I remember somebody's mom stuck them all over the cake as decorations even.
>>4320244
I used to have this, sooo long ago....
>>4335532
Holy shit I have that one and A on the card. Was probably my favorite vehicle toy.
Nostalgia'd hard as hell, dude.
>>4330414
very neat - what does MRR stand for?
>>4335984
OH oops - Machine Robo Rescue - I just read the jpeg. So some kind of Go Bots related then.
>>4335573
A lot of those have been recast. I like the red and green - my recasts are all silver
>>4316439
the wonderful thing about Robotix is that they are still sold today by the Robotics and Things company(http://www.roboticsandthings.com/)
>>4320256
god I love Attack Pack, but man is it the hardest toyline ever to search for
>>4335759
I'm amazed that no-one has tried resurrecting Z-Bots, considering how well those kind of tiny figures are doing these days
>>4317465
Battle Beasts are still one of my favorite toylines ever, sucks that the only attempts at reviving it have been overpriced low quality garbage(and this is coming from someone who normally likes Mini-Mates)
I'm trying to remember the name of these sort-of transforming cars from probably either Matchbox or Hot Wheels, that were kind of Pretenders in that they had die cast car bodies, and underneath those were creatures that flattened down to fit inside the car.
>>4336009
>I'm amazed that no-one has tried resurrecting Z-Bots, considering how well those kind of tiny figures are doing these days
even if some company did resurrect the IP they'd look nothing like the originals. Robo Frce barely resembles the toys they're supposed to be a modern version of, to give you an example of what Z-Bots would be like. Some asshole "artist" has to do his REEDUN take on it because the old way isn't good enough for him, regardless of how much he proclaims to be a die-hard fan.
Plus it's probably Hasbro that owns it and they only want to bring back old lines if no one asked for them.
>>4336981
Hot Wheels Robo Wheels? Those are fairly recent I believe so they may not be what you're looking for.
>>4335544
Since nobody replied I tried looking into it more and found them. They were by Galoob and called Army G.E.A.R.
This is some real G shit right here.
>>4337071
Similar concept to Robo Wheels, but a lot more poorly executed. They tended to be made of just hinged rectangular panels that stacked up, with some details added.
>>4336992
You never shut up, do you?
I mean how fucking entitled do you have to be get this upset over a remake of a 80s toyline that flopped?
>>4319984
Weren't there like sets of three of them that combined together into bigger robots?
>>4337541
Yes, they were called Linkbots
>>4337606
Awwwww yeah. That's the stuff.
>>4337606
HAD
THAT
SET
awesome.
these candy toys
who indonesian here
>>4318353
Xpanders were awesome. The only one I was able to get was the three wheeled atv, and I loved the crap out of that thing.
Mega Force was another line of military toys that were pretty fantastic. I only got three of these. The massive blue jet, that weird space shuttle firing tank thing-
>>4338286
and this weird ass thing.
Was there ever a toy that consisted of three planes combining into a giant robot? Not power rangers, this was like before the year 2000?
>>4337071
>ey were by Galoob and called Army G.E.A.
yes thank you, I loved this tank
>>4338286
I had all the top row. Micro Machines played so freaking perfectly with these things. I might still have the Scorpion laying around. All the others were lost to the moves I made later that year.
>>4338292
The only thing I can think of is Sky Saber.
http://www.bravedx.com/2011/10/sky-saber.html
>>4338286
I got one toy of each line and they were amazing, the binoculars from G.E.A.R., the chopper from Xpanders and the space shuttle from Megaforce. Don't know why this kind of sets don't exist anymore, I mean I lived through the golden age of sets, Mighty Max, Polly Pocket, Micro Machines, damn...
>>4338398
I had a bootleg version of the robot who formed the torso
>>4338607
I was lucky with Mighty Max. The one set I got was the giant lava monster.
ZAP Power Force, they were essentially just repackaged figures of the late 80's Toho toku series Dennou Keisatsu Cybercop
>>4319984
That is a fucking AMAZING image
>>4338832
I have the white one at the bottom. I always wanted to get the whole set, but the Kaybee that had them, sold out real fast, and then never got any more for some reason.
How obscure are these things? I still have a few lying around.
>>4309959
HOLY SHIT I HAD ONE OF THOSE
>>4339000
Pretty obscure if you weren't into that scene back in the day. I think I have almost all of them in storage, I played the fuck out of that type of game back in the day.
>>4339000
I somehow ended up with a few of these when I was like 11 years old.
I don't remember if I ever played but they were fun as minifigures.
>>4337071
The best part of this line is that the majority of the items actually worked as intended.
The watch had a real digital display, the compass would tell you what direction you were facing, the canteen had a small reservoir for water, the lantern had a real flashlight bulb, the gun made a clicking noise as you shot and the AK had electronic gunfire sounds, etc.
They even made badges that turned into small vehicles and were completely wearable.
