You are Princess Zelda, heir to the throne of Hyrule.

The fallen throne.

The Kingdom has collapsed. Your father, corrupted by Power, was slain in a coup. The young Hero in Green gave his life to ensure you and your attendant Impa escaped the ensuing chaos. The land descended into civil war, bands of warriors under Ganon appeared out of the desert sands, only to vanish as quickly as they appeared.

It has been 10 years since that fateful day. You have been raised by Impa for these last few years, just outside the dusty old town of Kakariko. An uneasy calm has settled, the memories of the Fall still lingering in people's minds. A glimmer of hope entertains many, rumors of those who wish to reunify Hyrule. At the same time, there are also rumors of those with the Power to plunge the world into even greater chaos than before...

You, Zelda Hyrule, have the potential to claim your birthright and restore the Kingdom to what it once was, bring back true peace to the lands. Can you? Should you? Your path ahead is not set in stone; you must chisel it in yourself. What kind of Legend will you create?

Impa tosses the large bag she brought with her over her shoulder, the tall woman pulling the hood of her brown cloak down. "We shouldn't be here for very long, but stay alert. Farmers arriving today, guards are lighter than usual."

"You think something's going to happen." you remark, slinging your own bag over your shoulder, following her towards the Item Shop, spotting people going about their morning business. Quieter than your last few visits, but it's early in the day.

Impa smiles at you as she opens the door. "Most likely just some Bulblins."

"See? Even I can pick up on your hints after the 40th try." you joke, heading in with her.

"Haha! If it isn't my two favorite customers!" a boisterous, friendly voice loudly greets you both, belonging to a muscular, somewhat older man about Impa's height dressed in a red tunic.

"You say that to any pretty face that walks in, Madas." your attendant responds with a soft laugh.

"Ah, but you two know it to be true, yes?" the merchant asks, leaning forward. "So what brings you here today, ma'am?"

Impa sets down her bag on the counter and nods to you to do the same. "Dropping off some spoils."

Madas starts pulling a few items out of the bags. "More Stalfos skulls than usual. And claws... mm, yes... wait..." He takes out a bottle with a small, ghostly figure inside. "Poes?" he asks with a mixed expression of joy and dread.

Impa nods, then turns to you. "You may go out for a bit. Price negotiations should be quick."

The way she says it seems to imply something more than just money talk, but you get the point and step outside, their voices getting quieter as you do. Glancing around you spot a Goron taking pictures with a camera, some kids running around the increasingly annoyed town guards, and a middle-aged man dressed in red and blue overalls in a horse-drawn wagon.

You slowly approach the Goron, a friendly smile on your face. "You're a rare sight these days. What brings you to Kakariko?"

The Goron quickly turns to face you after snapping a quick shot of the reconstructed windmill. "Well, hello Miss! Name's Doro, reporter for the Monthly Cucco. We've been trying to get some good stories of the recovery. And that little centerpiece seems like a nice start." Looking you over, he then pulls out a sheet of paper. "Say, you're a local, mind if you can give me some thoughts on it?"

You rub your chin. "Construction was just recently finished, last month, if I recall correctly. Took the town about a year to get it all together, though. Sparse supplies, sparser workers. Still... everyone seemed to enjoy the work, hard as it was. Gave them something to put their minds towards. Hope."

The Goron writes down your comments. "Minds... hope... aha, there we go. Thank you, Miss...?"

"I'm Termina." you tell the Goron, giving a respectful little bow.

The Goron gives you an odd look. "Huh. Well, heard stranger names in my day. Thank you, Miss Termina."

As he leaves in the direction of the windmill, you spot the wagon pull up next to the Item Store, the man in red and blue overalls helping a blonde woman out of it, three girls of varying ages unloading some milk from the back of it. The man takes several himself. "Now girls, remember, mind your manners in town. Especially you, Romani." he tells the youngest girl.

"Yes pa." she responds with annoyance, the older two giggling at her.

Almost as soon as the milk is unloaded, you hear rumbling in the distance. You spot dust kicking up near the town entrance, three figures on large boars, with it becoming increasingly obvious they're Bulblins. The town guards scramble to try and stop them before they enter, but with the distraction, it's too little too late. They head straight for the wagon, with the farmer and his family barely able to even react...

No. Not while you're around. You barely even think about it, you just... do. You bolt to the closest Bulblin and plant a hard kick right in its jaw, knocking it off its boar and right into another Bulblin. The two stumbling foes can't even register you're there when you introduce the first one to your blade, stabbing it right in the chest. It falls to the ground and vanishes in a puff of blackened smoke and mist. The second one tries to defend against your next strike, only for a slash to injure it, forcing it back. The final one circles around you, still on its boar.

The horse pulling the wagon is spooked, but the blonde woman keeps it from running. The farmer and his family barely get out a "Thank-" before you bark at them, "Get to your wagon, it's better protected than the open road!"

The guards finally manage to catch up to the commotion, spears ready. It's three against two, you have the advantage...

You keep your blade drawn, but pull out your crossbow, leveling it at the circling foe on its boar. "You're outnumbered. Leave while you still have your lives."

The two of them give off a haughty, vile laugh. The rider Bulblin tries to make a charge at you, getting a crossbow bolt in its leg for good measure... but distracting you long enough to let the other one to try to rush you. You stumble back, just barely avoiding its club as the guard closest to it runs it through with his spear, pinning it to the ground. It too vanishes in a swirl of black mist, the remaining foe finally taking your advice and getting out of there, before it meets its comrades' fate.

The guard offers his hand to help you up. "Termina, thank you. This could have gotten a whole lot messier if not for your quick thinking."

"Though you really should know by now that those... things don't listen to reason." the other guard criticizes. "It's kill, or be killed with them."

You sigh out softly. "I still feel the need to try."

Impa and Madas finally exit the Item Shop, the two of them talking quietly. As you stand, the farmers exit their wagon, the young girl you saved looking at you with adoration. The other, older two girls, one your age, one older, roll their eyes at her. "And Romani found a new favorite person. She's gonna grow up to be a hoodlum, pa." the eldest claims.

The man in red and blue huffs at her. "Cremia, that's no way to talk about the girl who just saved your sister."

>A. It's fine, sir. Just be more careful next time

They do in her other quest, but I hope they don't in this one. Best-of-five actually gives a pretty high chance of hitting one of the two extremes, so that can make a character's capabilities a little schizophrenic at times.

Passing DC while someone rolls a 1 is success, but with a penalty (you fended off the rider, and it was eventually convinced to flee, but it left you open for an attack by the other foe). At least that's what I try to represent. Fair?

And this is coming from one of the original advocates for best of 3.

You sheath your blade and put away your crossbow. "It's fine, sir. Is your family alright?" you ask with a friendly smile.

"Ah, see Cremia? She's modest, too." he replies. "We're fine, thank you Miss...?"

"Termina." you respond in a humble tone.

"Haha, a nice name. I am Talon, simple farmer." he replies with a pull on his overalls. "This is my wife, Pauline, and my girls, Cremia, Malon, and Romani-"

As soon as he says the youngest girl's name, she barrages you with questions, almost jumping with joy. "Miss Termina Miss Termina! That was so cool! You're so cool! How'd you learn to swing a sword like that? Who taught you to use a crossbow? Can you show me please please please?!"

I'm actually picturing Zelda coming off as polite and modest, but also a bit distant or aloof. She's probably got a fair amount of pride in her position as a princess, and combined with her having to keep up a alias for ten years, that probably means she would come across that way when she tries to be frank or warm. Does that make sense?

"It's fine, Mister Talon." You kneel down to the girl's level. "My aunt Yuga over there taught me both swordplay and how to use the crossbow." you tell the girl, pointing to the approaching Impa. "And your mother is right, Romani. It took me years before I could learn all this, and I'm no expert yet. We're both a bit too young for it. Say, how old are you, exactly?"

"I'm ten years old!" she replies excitedly, hands behind her back, swaying as she stands. "How old are you, Miss Termina?"

What a spritely little kid. "Sixteen. Hm... started learning when I was just a bit younger than you, but I had a good teacher. Tell you what, you think hard about wanting to learn, and get permission from your parents, okay?"

"Aww, okay..." she replies in a defeated tone.

Talon and his wife both laugh. "Hoho, good head on her shoulders too. See, Cremia?"

"I get it, pa! Eesh!" the older girl grunts and goes to pick up the jug of milk she originally unloaded off the cart, the middle sister softly chuckling at her.

Impa places her hand on your shoulder. "Come, Termina. We should be getting home soon." You wave goodbye to the farmers and head back home with Impa. Once you're out of the town, she smiles at you. "You have good initiative, Princess."

"Kinda botched the follow-up, though..." you sigh out.

She places her hand on your shoulder. "You offered mercy to a defeated opponent. That in itself is commendable. Few these days attempt such a thing." Impa goes quiet for a while, thinking to herself about how to say what she's trying to say. "...Madas is starting to believe you are ready. For your first real trial."

"And you don't." you claim, stopping. Impa winces as you say that. Nail on the head, huh? "I AM ready, Impa. I know you want to keep protecting me, I know you don't want... his sacrifice to be in vain. But we can't just keep sitting back and watching. Always preparing, never acting. " You take a look at the now-empty bag you brought to Madas' store. "...he knows that someone needs to act soon. There are more monsters out there than there have been in a long time."

Impa bites her lip. "My mind hears your wisdom, Princess. My heart wishes you weren't so bold." She places her hands on her hips. "It begins tomorrow, an hour after dawn. You will be tasked with locating the Great Fairy of Magic. I can not help you in this trial."

You get a glimmer in your eye. "M-magic?" you ask excitedly.

Impa's gaze becomes colder. She knows that look. "Yes. If you truly believe you are ready for it. BUT." she raises her voice, "You must promise me to listen to her instructions to the letter. Do you?"

You put on a stern face, trying to mask your excitement. "Of course, Impa. I will listen to her every word." Yeesssss.

"Good." she affirms. She still gives you a suspicious glance as you try to internalize it, but makes no outward comment on your behavior.

You clear your throat. "Impa, are there any things I should know about this trial, or must I figure it all out on my own?"

"Madas went through the same ordeal ten years ago, but neither of us are allowed to give you more than the most basic outline." she starts, the both of you approaching your home. "The Great Fairy is in her Fountain, at the far end of her old temple's ruins. There will be three important tests of your Courage, Wisdom, and the Power you draw from both. Then, and only then, will you be able to meet with her in-person."

A thought occurs. "Impa, what if I am not the only one trying to reach the Great Fairy tomorrow?"

The question strikes her as odd, but she sees the logic behind it. She takes a moment to think up a proper response. "...then you shall have to figure it out yourself. The Great Fairy's trials are meant to test those undergoing them for pure intentions in receiving her magic. Tell me, Princess, would you help someone complete the trials with you, at risk of potential failure? Or would you go it alone and let them figure things out themselves?"

Momentous decisions like these are best reserved on a case-by-case basis. I'd like to think that Zelda would try to help someone rather than help them fail, but this is a pretty Huge Thing.
>>
>>45383556
>D. Something else?

"I would...want to help them, Impa, but ultimately I would not; not unless their life was in grave peril. This test is meant to be undertaken alone, as you have said. If they cannot complete it, then better they should fail and return to a safer life, rather than succeed through another's strength and shoulder responsibilities they cannot handle."

"I would have to judge their intentions. I would not be able to leave them in mortal peril in good conscience, nor would I wish to empower a villain."

You take a deep breath and really think this over. Okay Zelda, how should you go about this...? "I... ultimately would desire to help them, but would not push for it in this kind of trial. If the trials are what I think they are, then it's better they are pushed into the responsibility required of them, of me, than we have each other cheat on the trials. At the same time, just as I will not cheat someone into achieving something they aren't prepared to handle, I will not abandon someone in mortal danger. I... I'll figure out the details when I see them in action."

Impa smiles a prideful smile at you. "A thoughtful answer, Princess. Make sure to put it into action."

"I will, Impa." you tell her with the same prideful smile she just gave you.

For the rest of the day, things seem almost routine. Train, cook, eat, train again, spend the evening clearing the roads of monsters with Impa, and get some sleep. As you doze off into slumber, you start to see... figures. They seem to be reaching out to you, you can almost hear their echoes of voices. You see a red light in the distance, rays like a dawning sun, but off, somehow. From there, a blackened figure emerges from the red light, shifting forms between humanoid... and monstrous.

"Re...turn..." the final figure calls out. But just as it does, most of it seems to vanish. All but its grotesque, shadowed face, appearing almost like... a mask. It's then grabbed by someone, a person just... laughing. Smiling. Happy.

You wake up in a cold sweat as you see the true rays of dawn through your window. Impa's already outside, packing things.

>>45384520
Yeah let's go with this. We make her worry by rushing out in our PJs, she's just going to feel even more reluctant about us undergoing the trials.
>>
>>45384295
Okay. Okay. No need to panic. Especially after how worried Impa was yesterday. You take a moment to steel your nerves; this is exactly WHY you need to go through this trial. Things like... that are out there. As tempting as it is to bolt out of bed and run to Impa, you keep your calm and approach her properly.

With her things packed, she faces you. "I see that you are awake, Princess. You- ...something troubles you."

"Strange dream last night. Four figures reaching out to me, and a monstrous one against a red dawn. Impa... what do you know about strange masks?" you ask hesitantly.

She gives a concerned look. "What did... the monstrous figure look like?"

You try to recall. "Like... a man trying to be a great pig monster, or vice-versa. He tried to say 'return-'" Her eyes go wide. "...when some... thing... made it mostly disappear. Everything but the face. Like it was making a mask."

Impa's normally tanned skin seems more pale than usual, but she keeps calm. "I am unsure about the 'mask.' But the increase in monsters could have something to do with this." To try and get both your minds off of it, your attendant reveals two outfits for you. "Princess, tell me, which do you believe would do better for this trial? Your poncho, or your tunic?"

Never know when you're going to need a poncho for something. It's practically a towel, which is one of the most useful items to have on a galactic adventure.

"Poncho." you tell her, grabbing the item from Impa's hands. After getting dressed with it, you look Impa in the eyes. "Are you sure there isn't something you should be telling me about the dream?"

"That depends entirely on if you pass the trial today." your attendant responds. "You do, and I will tell you all that I know."

"I will keep you to that promise, Impa." you say with a nod, making sure your sword and crossbow are properly equipped.

With the morning still young, you and Impa head towards the forested area to the east of Kakariko. After passing through some thick trees, avoiding a few Deku Scrubs along the way, you both spot Madas waiting for you, himself dressed in a more appropriate red tunic than yesterday, mail underneath it. "Aha, there you both are! Was getting worried."

"You know I wouldn't miss this, Madas." you respond, confidence in your voice.

He waves his arm in the direction of the deeper forest, structures that have started to be reclaimed by nature, illuminated by sparse sunbeams piercing through the treetops, filling your view. "Then, Princess... allow me to welcome you to the..."

Had fun. It's going to be interesting playing a bit more serious protagonist, though I'm not quite as familiar with the LoZ series as I am with DB/DBZ. Still, it'll be interesting getting some perspective on a new series while going into it blind.

As a long-term fan of Tuffle Quest, I can honestly say I enjoyed this a lot more. This felt much more uniquely "ours", in a way, and I really think Zelda is a character with a lot more potential than she's usually given.

So yes, I enjoyed this quite a bit. I've been hyped for this quest all week, and it didn't disappoint. I'm already excited for the next one.

Glad to hear! Primus, total honesty here, I was kind of worried how first thread would go, if people would really be interested in it. So, things have gone better than expected, at least.

>>45385511
Not overall major, but there might have been some tweaks to characters and other things down the line. If a write-in won, I'd tweak some things to fit it, as well.

>>45385595
>>45385629
Tuffle Quest is going on hiatus until the end of the month, just to kind of let me iron things out with it. I know it's been shaky for a few threads, and I'd rather take a break and make sure things play out better than run it on empty.

Secret Zelda Quest may continue again next Friday. This Sunday's a no-go since it's my Birthday.

>>45385710
You have a harp, and have learned to play a lullaby on it. I'll flesh out the rest of your starting equipment by next thread. Someone definitely has met with a terrible fate.

>>45386170
All right, interesting choices.

>>45386400
Do y'all want a smaller dice pool?
>>
>>45386472
Yes, you have it on easy mode right now. In fact, you could make this quest a bit more fun difficult if you would narrow the dice pool in certain situations.
>>
>>45386472
As someone who's played almost nothing but d20 stuff, I've been curious to try out the method of "3d6" to determine outcomes. Rather than tending toward the extremes, 3d6 actually tends toward the middle, meaning results are much more consistent. This would also allow for circumstantial modifiers - even something as small as a +1 - to make a much bigger difference.

Just food for thought.
>>
>>45386472
I like the 3d10 system honestly
>>
>>45386472
>>45386522
Also, it would be nice if there could be more correlation between stats and dice in your quest. Like, what are we even choosing when we vote on level ups? The last recommendation you gave us was so that we had 20 in each category. Does having 20 in Melee help us against someone with 15 Melee? Does it give us more dice than them? Would our 20 Stamina make us wear ourselves out quicker against their 30 Stamina? Is choosing an Energy Attack instead of a Melee Combo for style, or does our Energy and Ki stat factor into it? Does it even matter which tactics we use in battle so long as we meet DCs?

Rolled 6, 2, 4 = 12 (3d6)

>>45386522
>>45386937
Higher stats are supposed to give you better roll DCs on respective stats, depending on the enemy. Stamina and Ki dots are "ammo" for certain attacks, skills, and forms, with some taking up more of it than others. Abusing Afterimage takes up stamina, for example.

>>45386794
That's an interesting thought. Might even be able to work in some kind of combo system for swordplay...

In fact...

>>45386809
Also an interesting idea. I'll think on that one too.
