A lot of people here dislike monster girls because they often derail threads into lewd stuff and memes about horse genitals, so let's take things into a new direction and have a serious discussion about monster girls in regards to world building. This time we'll be talking about harpies.

>Eating humans, yes or no?
>Level of organization: Solitary? Tribal? Urbanized?
>What would a harpy village or city look like?
>Their relation to human settlements?
>What birdlike traits would be interesting to have in harpies? Would harpy men have impregnate human women behind their husbands backs?
>>
If you wanna avoid the fetish label, you may want to avoid using the term "monster girl", because that is specifically fetish terminology, lewd or not.

That said, I'm all for open discussion.

>Eating humans, yes or no?
Depends on a bunch of factors; size, organization, tech level. You're probably gonna want your harpies smaller, up to human size, which means they'll have much lower body mass, meaning they're limited to baby snatching unless they're otherwise prepared.
You could pattern your birdbrains on any number of social birds that are omnivorous. I like the idea of an evolved/magicked culture of corvid-harpies, myself.

>Level of organization: Solitary? Tribal? Urbanized?
Gonna go back to the corvids again, the social ones show quite a bit of social structure and build communal nests and such. Lend themselves well to tribal through urbanized societies. Birds of prey-patterned harpies would make more sense as solitary creatures.

>What would a harpy village or city look like?
The fun thing about flying humanoids is that you can have them living in places we don't think of as buildable; sheer cliffs, high canopies, cave ceilings, underside of floating islands (with their farms on top, maybe).
And when designing their homes, you can think in 3D, build it like a space station. No idea how actual crow nests are constructed, to be fair.

>Their relation to human settlements?
Smarter handless harpies would be trading for stuff that's hard to make without opposable thumbs. Your average human would probably try to hunt or enslave them though, could cause problems.

>What birdlike traits would be interesting to have in harpies?
How about a nomad society, migrating with the seasons? Not that nomads are unusual for humans, but moving several climate zones away is extreme for us.

>Eating humans, yes or no?
Plot hook, the bandits do.
>Level of organization: Solitary? Tribal? Urbanized?
All of the above.
>What would a harpy village or city look like?
Grass huts, coastal shanties, and the ruins of civilizations which are fixed up.
>Their relation to human settlements?
Varies by region.
>What birdlike traits would be interesting to have in harpies? Would harpy men have impregnate human women behind their husbands backs?
Sneak mating for sure.
Impaling goblins on spikes.
Complex science relating to volumes, specifically water displacement.
Perfect memory.
Complex social groups, passing all information continent-wide within weeks.
Monogamous males lactate (penguins have modified mammary glands in their throat).
Females look like humans and dwarves, males look like elves and fey.
Singing is part of natural language. Speech sounds like operatic rap.

Next thread, make it monsters in general.
>>
>>45356279
How about savage harpies that impale prey, human included, and eat them?
Like your regular harpies but more brutal

I forgot the bird species name. Shrike or something

I actually GMed a fairly anime "monsterpeople + floating islands" setting a year or so ago, and harpies were:
>Eating other sentients
Mostly no. There were still some crazy tribes, but with advent of gunpowder and airships their numbers are dropping.
>Level of organization: Solitary? Tribal? Urbanized?
Large conglomerations of tribes led by council. Kind of multi-tiered democracy: first tribe members decide on course of action, then their elder or ambassador represents them at the council meeting.
>Cities
Large complexes built into sheer cliffs, floating islands, basically everywhere you can reasonably reach. One of harpies' psychological quirks is that they always seek to go higher, to the point when your status in society is measured by how far from the ground you live.
>Relations
Their main allies are, ironically, catpeople, the "inventor" race of the setting. While they obviously don't need flying machines and don't dig giant robots, they instantly fell in love with gunpowder, to the point, where their entire war strategy depends on it. They have trade relations with other races, selling mined floatstone, minerals from floating islands, whole floating islands and grown food. Harpies are also surprisingly strong for their size, so they often serve as couriers or scouts. There's the darker side - aforementioned cannibal cults and new menace - sky pirates. Assholes swooping down on trade ships, planting bombs on them and then robbing the crew blind kinda sour the relationships and overall reputation of harpies.
>Traits
Their traits are more "behavior quirks" than "look how much of a bird i am!". They're more prone to action than to careful observation, somewhat claustrophobic and (it's more cultural thing, although derived from their early ancestors) consider staring EXTREMELY rude. I also gave them a minor
deviation from usual harpies - a set of archaeopteryx-like claws on the forewing for finer manipulation .

>>Eating humans, yes or no?
Depends on the monster, but I like monstrous monstergirls so on the whole, yes

>>Level of organization: Solitary? Tribal? Urbanized?
Depends on the monster, most powerful ones solitary, but a lot tribal, and some even urbanized

>>What would a harpy village or city look like?
Spread across cliffs

>>Their relation to human settlements?
Asshole raiders, I don't see them making enough to trade

>>What birdlike traits would be interesting to have in harpies?
Make them jackasses
Seriously, all birds are jackasses

>Would harpy men have impregnate human women behind their husbands backs?
Probably happens sooner or later, but not often

There should be diffrent types of societies for diffrent types of harpies. For instance, pidgeon harpies could live in integrated cities with humans and could all be shifty thieves and merchants, and parrots harpies could live in tribes deep in the jungle aeay from humans. Also, it'd be cool if harpies that are based ofd raptors were more monster like, maybe like flying canibals. I could see vulture harpies and condor harpies being really scary. Also, fun fact, birds will lay multiple eggs but if food is short unstead of splitting it between the chicks they give it all to the first born. So that could be an interesting societal difference.
>>
>>45356279
The problem is that monster girls are inherently not serious.

In order for them to be serious they have to actually be monstrous.
>>
>>45359014
The only way they could be taken seriously is if they're portrayed as sexy as opposed to cute, and even then only refined to the role of temptress. From my understand of myth, female monsters are usually either femme fatales or hideous ugly fiends.

>>

Totaly agree: monstergirls are exactly like monsters but with a "girly" touch that makes them cute or fetish.
If you want to know the behavior just think in the monster part of them or think in them as crossbreed or so

>>
>>45362721
Still better than dwarves
>>
>>45362772
MGE ruined dwarves by making them lust for human cock.
>>
>>45359014
They could be serious. It's just so far they've only been associated with cute and lewd stuff, except for some traditional examples like the centaur and the harpy.

But I do legitimately like the idea of those lizard girls who are serious warriors. Snip out the lewd part, and you've got a perfect player character race that could theoretically show up anywhere looking for a good fight.

Also, the idea of a monstergirl separates them from beastfolk - the former is like a human with some animal traits, the latter is an anthropomorphized animal that hasn't gone furry-level, still being more animal than person. It could be useful if you wanted something like Xanth, with magic slowly changing humans over generations into other creatures.
>>
>>45362789
Still better than dwarves.

Besides, I'm pretty sure they already did that.
>>
>>45356279
>Eating humans, yes or no?
As a general rule... "No", mostly because humans in general are kind of a shitty source of nutrients and I understand we don't actually taste that good compared to other animals. Plus, our tendency or organize and start fighting back or even "seek revenge" would turn any potential sapient predator off and stick with more naturally meaty animals.

>Level of organization: Solitary? Tribal? Urbanized?
Depends on what they are. Dragon-girls should be solitary as fuck but a mice-women should be living in fairly at least villages.

>What would a harpy village or city look like?
Once the material requirements are met, Skyscrapers would be a big thing for them, until then mostly towers and generally trying to build in higher places to for defensive purposes. Also because it gives them more excuse to fly.

>Their relation to human settlements?
Harpies in Greek myth kidnapped men to rape them and breed (fun fact: Greeks were the original Magical Realmers!) so if we want to avoid lewd and shit, let's ignore that.

Harpies would be excellent messengers and such and probably would love human agricultural societies as a source of food. So I could see humans requesting Harpies primarily for communication, exploration, and in rare cases, personal transport while humans help provide them with easy food sources.

So while neither society would depend on one another, they'd make things drastically easier. Depending on how avian the harpies are, this close relationship might result in humans picking up the habit of eating insects.

>What birdlike traits would be interesting to have in harpies?
All I know is that "not recognizing reflections" would only be good for comedy. Otherwise, Harpy society would be fucked.
>>
>>45363816
addeum to this I just thought of:

What would make Harpies potentially interesting is to base them on Corvids. So they'd be intelligent, but also kind of greedy for baubles.

>>45359356
Hey, mythological harpies weren't terribly pleasant either.

Admittedly, not quite that unpleasant.

They were also supposed to have like Brass Talons?
>>
>>45357433
This.

If you want to make monster-girls a serious topic, then you MUST include monster-boys. Going all that extra mile to make all of them exclusively girls implies that it's a fetish thing.
>>
>>45364316
Well, what should we call them then? Monster people?
>>
>>45363816
>As a general rule... "No", mostly because humans in general are kind of a shitty source of nutrients and I understand we don't actually taste that good compared to other animals.
Actually I have it on good authority from actual cannibals that humans are actually delicious, we taste a lot like tenderized pork. Apparently the most appetizing cuts from the human body are from the palms of the hands.

And most serious settings call them merfolk. Furthermore, then it would be monstermen and monstermaids, which sounds considerably more wonderful.

I would also argue that they should probably have have a separate label than [animal]girl/boy or the more general monstergirl/boy to make them sound like less of a lazy afterthought, even if the colloquial slang for them is still [animal]folk or monsterfolk.
>>
>>45362831
>>But I do legitimately like the idea of those lizard girls who are serious warriors
Which falls apart when their sole reason for fighting is to find a husband because they're all-female race of cockthirsty sluts dependent on human dicks for the continuation of their species. Not to mention girl + animal bits is kinda lazy without a good reason for it.

All that said and despite how fetishy it sounds, I still find myself in love with the idea of a tribe of all-female parthenogenic Amazonian warrior lizardwomen. It's stupid as shit but I still think it could be fun. Maybe in some sort of pulpy schlock fantasy setting.

I actually had a city of Arachne in one of my dungeons. The race was primarily female dominant, at least in the city my party was in, though there were male Arachne in their history that were in power before. Like various other anons have said, never make them an all-female species and don't refer to them as monster girls or monster boys. Refer to them by the name of their race and if you're referring to multiple monster-like races as a whole, go with monsterfolk.

That depends on what storyteller you ask. Some harpies pestered and killed travelers and just casually stole shit from them, some were semi divine and punished oath breakers relentlessly or were messengers of the gods. It was generally a good idea not to piss one off is the general idea though. They're pretty much the personification of a grudge.

It was gorgons who had brass like talons though.

I've been chewing on this question a bit in my head. What I came up with is the highest god in the pantheon is basically Zeus, and like Zeus would constantly put his dick in mortal women. Hera would immediately curse them out of jealousy, turning them into some type of half human creature based on the victim's personality and/or nearby animals. Zeus's child would be unaffected, but the curse would cause the woman to give birth exclusively to female monstergirls of her own species that mate with humanoid males. Zeus's children fill up the pantheon and retain favor toward their respective mothers' species, who they share alignment with; ideally there would be 8 such pairs, plus one god that favors humans (Zeus got away with one). So for example, a hyperactive, super impulsive girl gets crossed with a bird, creating harpies. CN god is wind or something.

Too magical realm?

I like this. In the beginning there was only not!Zeus andnot!Hera, but because of wanton fuckery the pantheon greatly expanded, as did the species of monstergirls.

>I wonder whether human women would be jelly about all the monster girls craving manmeat
Of course they would, but what are they going to do about it? A pretty big chunk of horny soldiers/sailors/adventurers that have been out in the field for weeks or months would happily oblige. Some of the more aggressive species might raid villages and carry the men off to rape dungeons. The kind and benevolent ones might try to marry humans and raise children together. I also like the potential for political/military plot lines that could develop between monstergirl tribes and human kingdoms.

"Mhhhh!! That's delicious! What is that?! Can I have some more?!!" the Harpy said, as she took other mouthful of fried food. The bird woman had a melodic voice... with harpies, it looked like they either had a precious voice or an horrible screech, the Zannas trader thought... not completely sure if the harpies could choose which one to use, or instead naturally they had that virtude divided in such inequal way. In the same way, some looked like winged elves, while others, like feathered goblins, or something like that...

a shame there weren't harpies with beautiful tusks like the Vanolosé...

"Sure! Take all you want!!" The Vanolosé said with a big smile, offering more with his hand.

For long, the Harpies of the cliffs of Tok-Thoria had been a bane to the Vanolosé Zanni shipping, almost as annoying as the cursed Tokerí pirates that infested these same islands.

One after other time, the Orange Sun of Blazakhov first, the Unlic Empire of Uslen second, and later the Vanolosé Free Trading cities tried to pacify these Islands... but it seemed, some evil, dark creature lurked in the archipelago, and there where rumours that a demon, witch or Necromancer of Old, of the times of the Great War still lurked in the stoney shores of Tok-Thoria...

After yet other failed expedition -other failed and costly expedition- the leaders of Zannas, wanting to cut expenses, tried to figure a different way to deal with these monsters, harpies and pirates...

Then, somebody proposed to try to buy off the pirates... while most of the Tokerí seemed to be too savage to be interested on it, prefeering to continue hunting sacrifices to their dark gods -or demons- of their forsaken islands, some ate the bait, and accepted the Vanolosé gold. "In Gold We Trust", as was the motto of the city: the paid pirates offered protection to the Zanni shipping against other pirates of Tok-Thoria...

...but still remained a problem the sea monsters and the harpies.
>>
>>45370315
The Sea Monsters couldn't be bought... but was the same case with the harpies?

"Well... During the Great War of Humans, Elves and Demons, the Demons had recruited in their ranks flocks of Harpies" somebody said. "Why don't we try to do the same?"

Unlike the demons, the Vanolosé Orcs couldn't intimidate the Harpies, coercing them to work for them, or make them serve them, fearfully worshipping them as gods. What they had, was their trade...

So their trade they used.

They learn the languages of the harpies. They learnt how to speak with them, and how to sell to them trinkets. With their charisma, they sold to some Harpy Flocks not only cheap trinkets -cheap for the Vanolosé, as the harpies had to pay a good price for them!-, but they sold as well to the harpies an idea... making such goods symbols of a status, that not even existed before among the harpies of Tok-Thoria.

Clothes. Food. Weapons. Jewels. They ignited the ambition of the Harpies: some of them threw themselves further into banditry, hoping to seize these symbols of status -and the status they carried- for themselves... but that only made the traders and their precious goods choose other routes...

...So some harpies learnt how to cooperate with the Vanolosé traders... and work for them.

The Vanolosé will quickly come to an use to the Harpies. Scouts for their ships, carriers of their messages, hunters of pirates and wild harpies: winged mercenaries to further enhace the power of the thalasocrats, the Sailor Princes of the Vanolosé.

Harpies where useful servants... but where difficult to train, difficult to mantain... and too many of their uses where simply shocking to the refined tastes of the brown tusked orcs -specially, alimentation and hygiene...-

So they domesticated Harpies: something told to be impossible.
>>
>>45370333
But the ambition for gold, the hunger for exotic and unknown foods, clothes and luxuries unknown to the wild flocks, some harpies will accept the baths and civility rules of their new tusked masters...

...at least until their old master, the Nigromante of Tok-Thoria, put an end to his hidding, reclaiming for his own the isles and the Sea of Tok.

"This is so tasty!!" the Harpy said again, her mouth full. "What it is? What kind of people are these Nuggets? Surely their meat is delicious!! Are they easy to hunt?"

It was really deep fried chicken nuggets he bought in a bucket... but the cooks called it on the ports Harpies Nuggets. It seem's somebody saw the harpies loved it and decided to jokingly call it like that, but he didn't wanted to possibly offend the harpy... when he was trying to precisely get something from said harpy.

"Oh Yes, the Nuggets! Dangerous people! Very difficult to find, and even harder to hunt down!" the Vanolosé said. "But despise the hardships, I have no problem sharing a bit of this heavenly meat!"

"IT-S-SO-GOOODD!!!" The Harpy said, eating the last chicken nuggets. "Tell me, where can I find some more of these Nugget-men?!! I SOOO need to hunt some down and eat them!!"

"I'm sorry!" the Vanolosé said. "But it's a secret I'm not willing to share..."

"Tell me where are the Nugget-meeennnnn!!"

"If I tell you, you and your flock will fall upon the Nuggets and kill them to the last... and then there would be no more Nugget-men to be eaten!"

"They are too delicious to live!" said a bit angry the Harpy now. She wanted MORE. "Give me more Nugget-men!!"
>>
>>45370352
"I don't have more... the Nuggets are difficult to hunt, and very dangerous" the Vanolosé said. "And, as I have said before, unless you get your flock to sign a contract with Big Tusks Trading and Co. to be our ships scouts, there will be no more Nugget-men for you... but if you tell of your sisters of our deal, and get to sign a deal with my shipping company, I will provide you plenty of their meat! For you and your sisters!"

The Harpy doubted... First of all, she didn't wanted to share ANY meat of Nugget-men with her Flock Sisters... Secondly, she didn't know how would she be received back in her flock... sure, they will be all full of envy from her clothes and jewels... but Mother would surely be angry for her escaping, that's for sure... but... It was SOoooooo DELICIOUUUUUSSssssssssss!!

"Sure!" she said. "Can I have some more Nugget-men now?"

"You still need to fly back to Tok-Thoria!! You will not be able to fly with a full tummy!!"

"Precisely! I need all my strengt!" said the Harpy.

I've fluffed out two monster girls for settings, so I'll answer questions for both of them

>>Eating humans, yes or no?
Felinids : Yes, they're a barbarous society based on coming of age death matches so they can properly mantle their past lives, becoming an elder on their ninth life regardless of biological age
Scorpions : No, they're now a slave race that can only subsist on artificial calorie supplements.
>>Level of organization: Solitary? Tribal? Urbanized?
Felindis : Tribal up to African levels of kingdoms
Scorpions : They're assimilated into the culture that lobotomized them into slaves
>>What would a harpy village or city look like?
It would probably be in mountainous regions where it's easy for them to catch updrafts and get around via flight.
>>Their relation to human settlements?
Probably rather little conflict since they wouldn't be settling the same land, just in need of the same natural resources. Harpies would have bird bones though, so they're not an exceeding threat to humanity, especially if they have wings for arms and can't use a bow as they fly.
>>What birdlike traits would be interesting to have in harpies?
Eggs. Eggs the size of ostrich eggs. False eggs to trick snatchers. An urban legend that consuming a harpie's false egg is a huge aphrodisiac. This legend started because people noticed that they harpies eat their own eggs before sex, although this was just an evolutionary adaption to retain those vital nutrients. Predatory lamia species that lay eggs outwardly identical to harpy eggs and pull switcheroos. All male harpies look like female harpies because of selective pressure from the lamias (they don't kill and eat the females so they can trick them into taking care of the eggs).

Yep, couldn't even go one post without this turning into lewd posting.

They gave me a giggle, m8.

Also, do oni women count as monstergirls?
>>

Nigga did you not read the 'snip out the lewd part?' They could just be a race literally drawn to becoming peerless warriors and challenging others in tests of skill, something magic in their blood or some grand design beyond their keen or caring. The idea of a friendly duel isn't beyond them, but even that is a serious exercise in their swordsmanship, because it's what they've worked towards since they were old enough to playfight. It's an all-consuming fire that can quickly burst into an inferno at the slightest hint of a challenge.

I personally find that a refreshing idea for a character - instead of necessarily doing what's most efficient, in a fight they'll only join in once they see an opponent that's actually worth fighting. They get elated when the fight goes well, are disappointed when their expectations don't pan out, and are furious if someone steals their kill. They always have a motivation to continue onward - finding another opponent to fight. And then you can slap on some other personality traits for stuff beyond fighting so they don't just become one-note.

I'm glad that you kind of like the idea too, but deriding it because of its source or that they're an uninspired design is rather shallow, especially considering how many legitimate things people turn lewd, and how elves are often just people with pointy ears.

Eh - harpies and centaurs are considered monstergirls, but they're also traditional monsters so they're treated more leniently. I think onis fall in the same category.

JESUS FUCKING CHRIST ANON
>>
lets be honest here this is the same shit as every other monster girl thread.

oh also I'm taking the bait.

Two words, HARPY NEOTEENY.

Harpies physically can't afford to turn into grown ass titty monsters, they'd likely spend up till their mid thirties / forties as perma lolis or shortstacks, arrested developmentally in order to maintain flight capability.

Furthermore if we're going full traditional I'd argue harpy males are literally just humans. All harpies are female, some genetic deviance magical anomaly or something. Because male harpies are retarded and hard to find art for.

So harpies would obviously have a lot of angst about men, I mean think about it, you think a puritan medieval christian run society isn't gonna immediately shut down the fetish shit and slaughter harpies on sight deus vult style for all the cucked house-wives out there whos men decided to visit the harpy nests for some thailand style neoteeny perma-loli gangbangin'? Fuck no, those brides of christ would burn them with holy fire.

Harpies would be in turn hateful of humans yet require them for breeding, usually murdering them afterwards, young harpies would be vicious adorable loli bull dykes fighting internally for dominance over one and other because they're all extremely jailhouse gay.

Basically its not fetish shit if you have a good narrative, plus it'd explain why harpies are such vicious and capricious dicks to mankind and why you're expected to sword their ribcages on sight.

>>45373986
No, orcs are just brutal barbarians who pillage and slaughter in most settings. This is a race that cares more about the art of fighting and defeating a foe using sheer skill.

How did they get hold of those?
