You can come up with a history and culture for your chapter, and develop characters through your tabletop battles.

As opposed to playing, say Sicarius, whom no matter how much you win or lose with him, canon will always say that Damnos was his only defeat ever.

It lets you play as Your Dudes, the mightiest dudes in the galaxy. Their lore, characters, appearance, and tactics are uniquely yours and are whatever you want them to be, limited only by crunch and the mockery of neckbeards when you tell them of your latest donut steel army. Don't ask what you should play. FIND it.

Keep reading lore. Devour that shit like you're a starving Tyranid and lore is made of biomass. Look into as many playable armies as possible, Armies of the Imperium, Chaos, Xeno races, spess mehreens, kayoss spess mehreens, fucking whatever. Keep at it until you find it.

Your army.

When you find it, you'll know. You'll know, from the feeling in your soul, how it says, "Yes, this is me, this is what I should play." Don't worry about "what if I don't find it?" Because you WILL find it. 40k is a vast and expansive enough setting to have a "your army" for literally anyone.

And then play it. Ignore WAACfags and the meta, this is YOUR FUCKING ARMY, and it's what you're gonna play, God Emperor damn it.

Create your own chapter. That way you can have the fluff the way you like it. I made my first army celestial lions because there was just a cool name and colour scheme and gw ruined it for me by fluffing out the chapter. If you create your own they can never ruin your fluff and you can design your own unique army.

Just play Blood Ravens, then whenever you see something cool in another marine chapter you can just add it to your list and it's still fluffy. In a salamanders kind of mood? "Borrow" a bunch of flamers and meltas. Like the black templars at the moment? They'll "lend" you some crusader squads. You can't go wrong!

White consuls are an interesting codex chapter, their slight variations give them some good fluff.

Thanks for all the input guys huge help. Also I have looked at the other races but SM is the one that really grabbed me.

I had the hardest time picking a Chapter myself. I consider making My Dudes, and I looked over all of the canon Chapters I could find.

In the end I chose the Crimson Fists, partly for being underdogs (by Space Marine standards), partly for being heroic and kind to civilians (again, by Space Marine standards), and partly for their Spanish/Mexican names, because I was born in Spain.

Maybe you'll find a Chapter that speaks to you for similat personal reasons, or maybe you'll go with one for its fighting style (Hawk Lords swoop in in Thunderhawks and leap down onto the battlefield, while White Scars love them some bikes), or maybe you'll go with a different army entirely.

Just take your time and see what speaks to you.

That's exactly what I've been doing. I took out the whole wolf element and just went full viking. I've modelled my heroes after the gods, my primarch is literally Odin, their home planet is essentially Scandinavia, the terrain will be 40k buildings with slight viking twists, they have their own unique colour scheme

You can do whatever you want man, you could use a combination of Dark Angel, Blood Angel and Templar bits to create some holy of holy god like marines. You can make some barbarian marines using parts from chaos warriors. Possibilities on the modelling side of things are endless man

It's nice to be good guys and all, but when you're dead, well shit, you can't be good anymore.

Pic related is the best chapter in that regard. Cares about little humans while staying grimdark.
Their entire mentality is about being the most self-suffering fatalistic grim bastards possible, but all in the name of ensuring that mortal humans don't suffer like they do.

They all see themselves as being already dead and that suffering and pain is their lot in the universe and nothing will change that, so nothing can hold them back from fighting as hard as they can to protect the innocent and the faithful from feeling their suffering.

They're one of the only chapters that manages to be both very grimdark and very sympathetic about protecting regular humans, without those two sides of their mentality conflicting.

The beauty of the space wolves chapter structure is that you don't need a successor. The Companies are mini chapters themselves so all you need to do is take one and flavor it how you see fit with whatever degree of wolfiness you deem tolerable.

I'm glad this has kept going with lots of good input and ideas.

I like the lore of the lementers but the colour sceam on the other hand I am not a fan of.

So far I'm liking the mantis warriors the most but I think I will also try to make up my own chapter and see how that goes. I liked the idea of building their lore and fluff up by using the games I play with them.

Most chapters have some gene seed defects making them 'impure' of blood, the blood angels are revered more than pure of blood chapters amongst /tg/ generally because they are so noble and pure of heart. Unlike some robe wearing dicks and other callous assholes but even then it's 40k and everyone and everything is fucking cool and awesome, even those aforementioned robe wearing dicks have an understandable and pity inducing story on how they became so tangled into being heretical.
