about to jump into the eternal war of the 41st millennium. been reading a lot of the lore and i am torn. i cant for the life of me chose a chapter to devote myself too.
In my time of need i come to you to help me decide.
There are lots and lots to choose from, but keep in mind, as >>45313866 said, there's plenty more to latch onto in the setting besides Astartes.
Even more importantly, you can make your own chapter.
Obviously the Girl Marines are the best chapter.
But if you don't hate your wallet and your sanity, you should play the White Scars. Never enough assault bikes, I say!
What even is the benefit to making your own chapter, besides getting to pick your colors
You can come up with a history and culture for your chapter, and develop characters through your tabletop battles.
As opposed to playing, say Sicarius, whom no matter how much you win or lose with him, canon will always say that Damnos was his only defeat ever.
It lets you play as Your Dudes, the mightiest dudes in the galaxy. Their lore, characters, appearance, and tactics are uniquely yours and are whatever you want them to be, limited only by crunch and the mockery of neckbeards when you tell them of your latest donut steel army. I consider this near-limitless customization and personal input the best quality of the setting.
Don't ask what you should play. FIND it.
Keep reading lore. Devour that shit like you're a starving Tyranid and lore is made of biomass. Look into as many playable armies as possible, Armies of the Imperium, Chaos, Xeno races, spess mehreens, kayoss spess mehreens, fucking whatever. Keep at it until you find it.
When you find it, you'll know. You'll know, from the feeling in your soul, how it says, "Yes, this is me, this is what I should play." Don't worry about "what if I don't find it?" Because you WILL find it. 40k is a vast and expansive enough setting to have a "your army" for literally anyone.
And then play it. Ignore WAACfags and the meta, this is YOUR FUCKING ARMY, and it's what you're gonna play, God Emperor damn it.
Create your own chapter. That way you can have the fluff the way you like it. I made my first army celestial lions because there was just a cool name and colour scheme and gw ruined it for me by fluffing out the chapter. If you create your own they can never ruin your fluff and you can design your own unique army.
Crimson Fists are objectively spiciest marines.
Just play Blood Ravens, then whenever you see something cool in another marine chapter you can just add it to your list and it's still fluffy. In a salamanders kind of mood? "Borrow" a bunch of flamers and meltas. Like the black templars at the moment? They'll "lend" you some crusader squads. You can't go wrong!
This is a valid choice >>45314503
But you can do the same with your own chapter
But consider ForgeWorld chapter too.
Most of them are pretty awesome.
ForgeWorld knows its shit.
Here, posting some chapters so that you can see color schemes that interest you.
White consuls are an interesting codex chapter, their slight variations give them some good fluff.
Doom Eagles are fucking dope as well, being very humane while staying grimdark.
And how do put in that the different styles of different Space Marines, I mean Space Wolves are pretty close combat with all the claws and the like, while Space Marines are a jack of all trades.
Can you build your chapter on top of a Space Wolves one and rebrand the wolf names for brutal viking names?
Well that's what they're designed to be.
New players introduction army.
-Relatable because human
-Meets a lot of 40ks rule of cool
-Badass as hell
-Equally grimdark and noble bright depending on the chapter
SM really hit off well with people new to the lore.
Join us in service to the Silent King!
Go with the Mongol Marines, or try out the IG.
You may not like thousands of guys dying in hopeless attempts at footslogging, but I'm sure you like tanks and artillery, right?
Thanks for all the input guys huge help. Also I have looked at the other races but SM is the one that really grabbed me.
So far I have narrows it down to a few chapters.
The possibilities are endless. You can use the basic Mehreens codex, Space Wolves, Black Templars, Grey Knights, Blood Angels, and so on to give your army whatever crunch you think fits them best. Thanks to Ally rules, the possibilities are even more endless because you can mix and match your chapter with other factions within and without the Imperium to make even more unique armies of Your Dudes.
Pick a better game than 40k.
Failing that, come up with your own chapter. If you absolutely need it to be a canon chapter, then why are you going on a Turkmenistani crocheting forum to ask people what your opinion should be? How the fuck would we know what you're looking for?
Go play smurfs for all I care. No, no, I mean play actual smurfs. Get all smurfed up the smurf by gargamel or something.
Or just roll up a random chapter using 1d4chan.
Why are you getting so upset?
Is it wrong for me to come here to ask for opinions of more experienced players? Is it wrong for me to come to this bored to talk to ppl about this game be4 I dive in? im not asking ppl to tell me what or how to play I was just seeking advice.
I had the hardest time picking a Chapter myself. I consider making My Dudes, and I looked over all of the canon Chapters I could find.
In the end I chose the Crimson Fists, partly for being underdogs (by Space Marine standards), partly for being heroic and kind to civilians (again, by Space Marine standards), and partly for their Spanish/Mexican names, because I was born in Spain.
Maybe you'll find a Chapter that speaks to you for similat personal reasons, or maybe you'll go with one for its fighting style (Hawk Lords swoop in in Thunderhawks and leap down onto the battlefield, while White Scars love them some bikes), or maybe you'll go with a different army entirely.
Just take your time and see what speaks to you.
Go with the Thousand Sons, OP. They got wonderful looking helmets.
I like the crimson fists too
their chapter master works really hard to rebuild his chapter but also wants to find and rescue his best bug Allesio.
Probably one of the only special characters I actually like the story of,.
That's exactly what I've been doing. I took out the whole wolf element and just went full viking. I've modelled my heroes after the gods, my primarch is literally Odin, their home planet is essentially Scandinavia, the terrain will be 40k buildings with slight viking twists, they have their own unique colour scheme
You can do whatever you want man, you could use a combination of Dark Angel, Blood Angel and Templar bits to create some holy of holy god like marines. You can make some barbarian marines using parts from chaos warriors. Possibilities on the modelling side of things are endless man
No recommendations for the Lamenters?
Shame tg, shame
They're the closest think 40k has to a group that's actually good, not grey.
Shhhhh, I got you
It'll be worth it to have a chapter that nobody can one-up in fluff.
Man they're just dumb.
It's nice to be good guys and all, but when you're dead, well shit, you can't be good anymore.
Pic related is the best chapter in that regard. Cares about little humans while staying grimdark.
Their entire mentality is about being the most self-suffering fatalistic grim bastards possible, but all in the name of ensuring that mortal humans don't suffer like they do.
They all see themselves as being already dead and that suffering and pain is their lot in the universe and nothing will change that, so nothing can hold them back from fighting as hard as they can to protect the innocent and the faithful from feeling their suffering.
They're one of the only chapters that manages to be both very grimdark and very sympathetic about protecting regular humans, without those two sides of their mentality conflicting.
>All of creation suffers, young ones. Only in accepting our own mortality can we make a difference. Only in bearing the burden of our failures can we find the strength to go on. Only in detachment from glory, or honour, or jealousy... from life itself can we hope to spare others from grief.
>We are Doom Eagles. And we are dead already.
From a crunch perspective, mainly>>45319553, and players can also flit between chapter tactics freely by pulling the "unknown progenitor" card.
>Man I really wonder what it's like to play Carchadons or Black Templars
>Good thing I didn't paint these guys as Iron hands
Guardians of the Covenant.
>Most monastic chapter out there
>All members wear crimson robes
>Fightan xenos at the fringes of known space
>Armoured warfare and archaeotech due to good ties to AdMech
>Unique DA successor, not blatant copy
>Writing books about Xenos purged
Honestly, what's there not to like?
go space sharks, bitches love the space sharks
Why doesnt the Imperium just hand out personal gellar fields so they are immune from all chaos/warp stuff?
The beauty of the space wolves chapter structure is that you don't need a successor. The Companies are mini chapters themselves so all you need to do is take one and flavor it how you see fit with whatever degree of wolfiness you deem tolerable.
I love CC so I play Firehowlers. Here's my Wolf Lord.
I'm glad this has kept going with lots of good input and ideas.
I like the lore of the lementers but the colour sceam on the other hand I am not a fan of.
So far I'm liking the mantis warriors the most but I think I will also try to make up my own chapter and see how that goes. I liked the idea of building their lore and fluff up by using the games I play with them.
Thanks again for all the input and suggestions all.
Most chapters have some gene seed defects making them 'impure' of blood, the blood angels are revered more than pure of blood chapters amongst /tg/ generally because they are so noble and pure of heart. Unlike some robe wearing dicks and other callous assholes but even then it's 40k and everyone and everything is fucking cool and awesome, even those aforementioned robe wearing dicks have an understandable and pity inducing story on how they became so tangled into being heretical.
This is mine. They crusade for the God-Emperor and against all heathens who deny that pineapple is the best pizza topping.
May the Emperor watch over you. Your cause is righteous.
They're all packed but these past few weeks I've been meaning to get back into 40k. I'm sure sometime next week I'll post them in WIP thread when I fix them up a bit
Was how I painted my Dark Angels when I first got into them back in '06/'07. Damn that was a good era for warhammer
Remember Medusa V? Skull Pass? Remember when white dwarf had fun battle reports, interesting articles, cool hobby sections? Remember when the rules, codexes and fluff weren't raped?
RIP in Peace
Yeah, I agree, I feel like 06/07 were the best years for both warhammer 40k and world of warcraft, i miss those days, they were truly mankinds golden age.
