Upon closer inspection your Scout can see that in face their eyes ARE painted on. The small blue thing tilts its head to the side, waiting for your Scouts response. “If you are not here to raid us, may we offer you a greeting? A place to warm your selves and tell us of yourselves? If you are here to do us harm, perhaps we can dissuade you with some goods? We do not wish for trouble.” Its mouth doesn’t move when it speaks, nor does its chest of throat. Its body is perfectly still with its back to the cowering humans. They look up at you with eyes wide, none are trying to hide from you and all are empty handed.

Your Scout shakes his head, kneeling down a bit before the small blue being, it smells faintly of flowers. “We aren’t going to hurt you, little ones.” The other Scouts step from their “hiding” places and step carefully towards their brother. “However, we will take you up on the offering of food and warmth.” The blue being snaps its head upwards and the humans disperse in their unsettling silence.

“We will make accommodations.” It says, turning and making its way into the town, raising its hand to be followed. All around your Scouts the sounds of a busy town resume. Humans work together to haul straw bundles for your Scouts to sit on, while others make a small stone circle soon filled with wood. “Unfortunately you are too large to fit inside our current structures. Something that will be remedied next time.” Finally a fire is set, its blaze bleeding out warmth into your Scouts. “What brings you to our homes? We have been here for quite some time and haven’t seen a humanoid your size before. How many are you?” Its head rocks to the side again, at the same, precise angle as before.

For now....

It doesn’t take long for food to be brought out by silent, grey clothed humans. Several baskets of bread and corn are laid before your Scouts. Meanwhile the blue being listens to your Scout, “Yeah we were run out of our homeland by a bunch of humans. We didn’t mean to do them any hurt and yet, it only took one mistake for our whole world to be brought down around us.” He stares into his bread before taking another bite out of it. “In the end we managed to outrun them, found us a home just a few miles north of here, right west of the river, just past the lake, big cave, can’t miss it.” He sighs, drawing a deep breath. “Yeah there was a few dozen of us before we were run out. Only 14 of us made it here, can you imagine that kind of pain?” He looks up into the blank, painted eyes of the blue being. Of course it doesn’t. “We lost one, he died when a troll attacked him in a cave. On the upside we just got a new little sister, she was borne not 2 months ago and is already crawling and bubbling on like crazy.” He pauses again, chewing slowly on some corn.

“Fascinating, in the future we would be happy to accommodate your people. For the meantime would you perhaps be interested in doing us a service? You see we are a peaceful people, unable to defend ourselves against the wilds in the best of times. You however are quite large, and capable. Perhaps we can come to an agreement?”

“What could you need protection from around here? Worst we’ve seen was one single troll in a cave, doubt theres more of that kind in these parts.” For the first time the blue being raises its arms slightly to its sides.

“With winter comes the Long Dark, several months where the sun cannot be seen and the land is claimed by the night. All manner of things come creeping and lurking with the darkness. We can do little more than cower in our homes and pray they do not take us. Aside from that we simply have it in protocol to recruit a defensive measure in case of attack, as it is said, Better safe than sorry.”

Your Scout nods, taking it in. “What exactly are you? Its clear you aren’t human. Are you alive?” It’s a rough ask but, knowing is far better than ignoring.

It lowers its arms back to its sides. Leaning its head forward over the fire. “I am designated Number 5, Humunculus of the Evening Ark. It is my task to tend to visitors and maintain perimeter safety. A progressively difficult task.” Is that pride?

“What do you do your people do here?”


“We are to keep a steady supply of food for our carefully maintained population, ensure our facility is secure and await the return of our maker. It has been 733 years since his departure and we expect him to be dead, however protocol requires us to stand and maintain at all costs.” Its voice is rapid, as if this were the first time its explained this in a very, very long time.

“And what can you offer us for our service?”

“Food, we cannot supply your massive frames ourselves, but we can offer you food at a regular basis, perhaps if our agreement lasts a good while we can begin to offer you more?” It seems unsure.

We don't need to be dependent, but a little help while we're still getting our bearings isn't going to hurt.

Oh we should ask if they know where any Mammoth herds might be. We could do with bolstering our herd

To be fair, when the long dark comes it'll probably be better to migrate south for the season.

The Scout nods, “We can do this for you, but we are quite far away, I don’t think it would be possible for us to protect you from so far away.”


“No worry, we will have a home prepared for 2 of your number to stay. This will allow for protection, comfort and convenience. Due to your size, that will take several days to be constructed. We will send a messenger for you when it is done.” Its voice seems pleased.

“What exactly comes, with the Long Dark?”

“All manner of beasts. We rarely get to observe them, given their ravenous nature and our lack of protection. We do know there are wolfs, huge, larger than horses. They are the reason you no longer see livestock at our village, slaughtered after years of fighting to keep them safe you see.” It turns, finished and ready to attend other tasks. “Leave when convenient to you. I must begin the construction of your home.”

After some time the Scouts get up and awkwardly make their way out of the town. Already they can see some fresh ground being pounded flat by several grey robed humans. A home being prepared

It doesn’t take long for the Scouts to return home, with tales of the strange village they found.

Yira takes to the caves to find a darker and damper chamber. It doesn’t take long to find one and soon the orange flash of fire can be seen against the cave walls, the smell of burning stones leaking out from his chamber. More than once the baby has to be stopped from going too far into his cave, her curiosity dominating her tiny child judgement.

As the week draws on the sun struggles more against the mountains, each day is notably shorter. The night are freezing and without more usable lumber, your people are threatened with sickness and hypothermia.

I have not read the first thread.
Have we build anything?

If not, we should start building inside the cave.
First blocking the entrace, even snow and cut down tree trunks would help to keep warm inside.

Later we can replace that with better wall. After we got research done.
Crude wooden floor, walls and roof inside the cave would also help a lot.
We need to prepare to the winter. Finding a way to store more food would help...or capturing more livestock.

The Tribe sends out several workers out into the cold tundra. They struggle and fight but eventually they bring back several arms full of long, hardwood trees. Unfortunately the cold is too harsh for them to say out long and as they clear more land they have to travel further to get more. (+30 Hardwood)

The Child is standing now, she speaks in a mixed jumble of words excitedly to anyone that gives her the time of day, and to herself when nobody else will.

The land is coated in the first snowfall, a few inches meaning little to your tribe save for it heralding the beginning of winter.
