>>
how do you guys feel about playing pickup games at a store/club against unpainted armies?
>>
So an eight week campaign is starting out at my LGS that I can't wait to take part in. Everyone has 1000pts to work with and the lists can change week to week and we occur more points as we gain tiles and progress on the map. The list below are all my current painted and almost table top ready models. I also have a Librarian on a bike, another three bikes and an attack bike for Ravenwing. By the end of the month I will have 3 more attack bikes and another Landspeeder +15 beakies. Any and all advice is welcome. Thanks.

Partially assembled I have 15 Deathwing (5 Knights, 5 Command, 5 Termis) and 2 DW HQs (Lib and Chaplin).

Ravenwing Strike Force

HQ:

Interrogator-Chaplain w/ Mace of Redemption (160)

Elite:

Ravenwing Command Squad with Apothecary, Champion, Company Banner, 2x Grenade Launcher (295)

Fast Attack:

Ravenwing Bike Squad with 2 Grav Guns, Combi Grav and Meltabomb (120)

Ravenwing Bike Squad with 2 Meltaguns, Combi Melta and Melabomb (110)

Ravenwing Landspeeder with Assault Cannon (70)

Ravenwing Support Squadron (245)

Darkshroud
3 Landspeeders with 2 Heavy Bolters

1000/1000

With the Campaign I already have an extra 75 points.

I really don't need all the special weapons against Daemons or even just a Rhino or two. My command squad's Plasma Talons seem to be pretty nifty at dealing with matchbox transports.

With the Ravenwing Strikeforce I get "Speed of the Raven" as a bonus. This says that on my first turn any unit that turbo boosts or moves flat out counts as jinking but don't occur the penalty of snap shots next turn. Does this mean I shouldn't use scout moves so I can flat out my first turn and actually use this bonus. As I have been playing it I usually do all the scout moves that seem helpful and then will turbo boost the rest. Is this the proper way?

Any Ravenwing tactica would be great.

Also if there are any good videos that cover each phase in depth or even just good veteran players discussing things I should know (deployment theory, when to CC when to run etc) please point me in the right direction. I try to watch batreps but I don't want to fill my head with all the armies and it is hard to find videos in 7e of close lists that are worth watching.

I can understand a few unpainted units, but what the fuck is even the point of playing a "I bought a fresh netlist and spraybombed it black" fag? Not to mention that it looks stupid if you're playing with a painted army on decent-looking terrain and your opponent is playing an army consisting entirely of Guardsmen's shadows.
>>
>>45273136

Would I prefer everyone armies to be 100% painted and WYSIWYG, sure. But mine is neither and constantly changing.
I will at least get a few colors on mine before they hit the table but I won't out right refuse a game because you haven't found the ton of time it takes to paint.
Granted if you have 3000 points of grey and no effort towards painting anything I may be a bit put off, but again I just want to play the game.
If my imagination is good enough for my soldiers to come alive on the battlefield it can certainly color in your models with little effort.

To me winning is everything so I can relate on that level. Thinking about picking up some wulfen and painting them orange and blue (my favorite colors), calling them magical dog children their primarch is born apart from the others as he was seperated form the emperor at birth when a new chaos god Tony the Tiger took him away. Thanks for the replies from everyone on unpainted armies.

I ask because I haven't actually played a game of 40k against another player in nine years, but the past few weeks I've been hard at work converting models and kind of want to try playing the game.

Now if only it wasn't an hour and a half to the nearest LGS...

(also it is nearly 1 am and I wish my neighbors would stop blasting music. I guess there is some kind of sports event tomorrow and they are excited, but it is keeping me from sleeping)

>>5273664
As long as they make progress each time that army comes up that's really cool by me. I saw a youtuber who actually proposed fielding models first in an unfinished state, so when they do something cool or noteworthy you can adjust the model to portray that narrative
>>
>>45273664

That's why I said "I can understand a few unpainted units"

If you only had time to throw the entire army together and prime it then you shouldn't be playing it. There are a few exceptions, but he specifically mentioned "pick up games" and not one of those tournaments where you add X number of points to your list every few weeks. In the latter case I could see having an army that ended up mostly-unpainted due to time constraints. In the former case, fucking paint them before playing, if you have time to spend building little space men to go pew pew on a table every weekend, you have time to paint them.

>>45273723
>I guess there is some kind of sports event tomorrow

I was going to make fun of you for being too /tg/ since I'm not even American and I know what that is, but then I realized I only knew that it was coming up due to one person telling me about it, so...

I've been eyeballing Tau lately as the army to start my first 40k army, but let's say I wanted to do a sort of "mercenary xenos" force of the Tau Empire, running mostly Vespid, Kroot, etc.

What are my options to do this, and will it be worth a shit?

If not, how viable is a fire warrior heavy army, lots of Tao infantry and transports and such? I'm liking the fire warrior models too. Basically I'm asking how can I play Tau without using a lot of suits and instead focus on the alien dudes themselves.

The Xenos have a formation that makes them pretty good.

I have a mechanized Tau force, 6 Devilfish, the Hammerheads, 2 Piranha, and 1 suit Commander. It's not especially good but I like it. I'll probably be picking up a Riptide and a squad of Crisis suits soon (gunna run the suits with double flamers and a Fusion blaster, then charge in for GLORIOUS COMBAT)
>>
>>45273775
kroot aren't a bad unit, they just don't have markerlights

vespid are pricy points wise, and the models are old and don't have great poses. They are good at what they do though. The flipside is Vespids are specialists in something Tau are already good at.

Infantry tau is fine. Pulse rifles are good weapons. Watch out for blast templates and AP4 weapons. Using cover will help your guys live a lot longer.

The struggle you will have is with dealing with high AV and monstrous creatures that your kroot, vespids, and tau infantry all can't hurt effectively.
>>
>>45273830
Resin is expensive and brittle, most models are also completely mono-pose. GWs resin is also known for coming with defects
>>
>>45273830
All xeno models in tau army are resin.
>>
>>45273866
Kroot are plastic aren't they?
>>
>>45273866
>All xeno models in tau army are resin.
kroot and tau are plastic and always have been, but other kinds of kroot like the krootox or dogs I'm pretty sure were originally metal (and now finecast)
>>
>>45273886
>tau
I said xeno models, not tau.
>>
>>45273886
why do they call it finecast when its absolute shit?

>>
>>45273034
Oh lawd. I used to have a very small ork army when I was much younger but I kind of stopped collecting/playing. I've been out of the loop for years although I am very very familiar with the 40k universe I feel like the finger details have gotten way past where I left it. Anyways, I'm thinking of doing an IG regiment. Are they good? Fun to play? Any tips? What do I need to get started other than the codex?
>>
>>45273912
>implying tau aren't xenos

>>45273915
marketing

there are also two things to keep in mind about finecast:

1) finecast today is a lot better than the original finecast. Still not as good as plastic or metal though, which is why all new kits are plastic.

2) models intended for finecast turned out waaay better than models that were originally cast in metal.
>>
>>45273775
Ethereals, firewarriors and kroot are all decent. Vested are not.
>>
>>45273938
IG are viable at all levels of play

they are a flexible army with a lot of different styles. They also have access to a very large number of allies, allowing for even more options. Do you want tanks? Blobs of footslogging infantry? Mechanized elite infantry? A little of everything?

The Start Collecting! bundle is a decent place to begin. It has a tank and some infantry in it.
>>
>>45273973
Nice! Thanks man. How many rule books do I need to buy?
>>
>>45274070

Just the core book and IG codex. Maybe Mont'ka because it has some formations for IG. IG goes by the name Astra Militarum these days, but everyone is more than okay with you calling them IG.
>>
>>45274070
The core rules and your codex.

You can often get the core rules really cheap if you ask around, as the starter kit (Dark Vengeance) comes with a small print version.

if you wish to use allies, you'll need their codexes too. IG don't have to use allies, but as an army of the Imperium they have access to the entire range of Imperial armies as allies, should they feel the need.

>>
>>45274188
There is a Cadian supplement which gives them a new detachment made of formations just like Necrons, Tau, etc. It's somewhere in the download link in the OP.

Give your IC an Auspex to strip cover from shit you shooy with black knights. I would only take 1 GL personally.

Put Double MM on that landspeeder and take the melta squad as the ravenwing attack squadron formation for the BS bump.

>>45273223
I always scout up. Nothing says you need to turboboost forward. Concentrate and destroy one element at a time.

Don't CC anything except with your black knights, and even then, don't CC dedicated assault units. You will lose, or take casualties, which you can't afford.

Melee is to finish off units.

I would recommend a techamarine over a librarian since he gives you much needed AP2.

A Knight Titan or Flyer Spam would fuck you.

Don't take any deathwing. They just aren't worth it.

I've tried. Unless it's a pity move vs. CSM.

Second Darkshroud isn't a bad investment to increase coverage range.

Or be a real cunt and take Librarius Conclave, White Scars, give all your squads skilled rider...

Also do max spacing for blast weapons. Target priority is on ignores cover weapons.

In the Curse of the Wulfen there isn't any. However there is almost surely another book (like the Mont'ka one after Kauyon) that may have Dark Angels or Grey Knights formations, since those two chapters have important roles in the campaign

Well, as far as I can remember in the current codex there are 1 Deathwing formation, 1 "greenwing" formation and 3 Ravenwing ones, I'd expect them to focus on the former rather then making more ravenwing ones.
it really depends on which part of the DA chapter they focus during the campaign. If there are many parts for the Deathwing in the story there will be for sure new formations for them

Are nomads trader or merchant cultured craftworld eldar possible? Like somekind of Bentusi or House Hlaalu, that involve them to be more in contact and friendly with other races.

Trading is mostly handled not by the craftworlds themselves, but rather people on the "Path of the Outcast", which is basically just a polite way of saying Eldar who're kinda sick of putting up with other Eldar's bullshit.

>>45275573
I play mixed Khorne/Slaanesh, so my big bad beatstick is a thirster while my common infantry is daemonettes, and i run a big pile of flesh hounds and a bunch of seekers with a mounted slaanesh herald in each. Its pretty easy to swap around the god-specific units, and the KoS is probably the best generic HQ in the daemons codex for its points. I want to run some chariots, but they're fragile both on and off the table, so much so as to be unusable. Beautiful models though
>>45275628
The point of 40k is that most things are possible, and while i don't know eldar as well as most things, it sounds reasonable enough. They still need to protect themselves from Slaanesh though, so they need to follow their Paths. That said, they'll still be eldar, so they're still insufferable jerks. Maybe consider running Corsairs to represent the less-standard society
>>
>>45275628
Yes, though what they are specifically I don't know. There is a Craftworld that essentially operates like Mass Effect's Omega, hosting numerous Corsairs as well as other mercenary types for instance.

I have this concept of craftworld that is controled by yakuza-like merchant houses centraled in trading and profit. They are dominated by mariner and outcast path ( like >>45275657 said), and their warrior path are lack of aspec warriors, so they are rely mostly on guardians and crimson hunters (the only aspect shrine in craftworld) as military forces.

They are more frendlier and in touch with other races, thats also make them diplomat amongs their kind. Still a manipulative bunch of bastard thought even with their own kindred (for profit of course)

Scouting no, you count as moving on from reserves though.
>>

Outflanking and scout are completely different.

Scout repositions the model. No moving involved. ("can instead redeploy")

Outflanking is just coming on from reserve from a non-standard board edge. ("it must move onto the table" "Measure the model's move from the edge of the table as if they had been positioned just off the board")

Hey you!

Yes! You!

Are you playing Armies of the Imperium?

Want a reliable turn one deployment level for short ranged or slow units? Want to wreck a tank but just can't get your Meltaguns up close? Got a durable assault unit you'd like to shock and astound your opponents, drawing all their fire? Extra points left over from formations that give you free wargear?

Come on down to Gabriel Seth's used drop pod emporium! Here we have drop pods for every occasion, for the low low price of one HQ choice and a unit of scouts, you too can enact the famed STEEL RAIN tactic outlined by the Codex Astartes!

Satisfaction guaranteed, or we'll tear your flesh off!
>>

Well I figured with them having 'eavy armour their "improved" mob rule might be less of a liability and I was hoping to roll Deep strike on a 5+ for them, the list's theme is overly complicated plans which my or many not blow up in my face.
>>
>>45276818
Anything ordnance shouldnt take any upgrades. Some people like having sponsons, i see them as a waste of points. Most of the variants have uses, although anything with plasma cannons and/or executioners should only be used when there is a reroll available. The standard is pretty good, although ordnance is a pain.
>>
>>45276818
Vanilla, never.

Ordinance don't work well with sponson/hull weapons.

Other variants typically match armament to maximize efficiency against main guns intended targets.
>>
>>45276845
You'll have to use the shitty mob rule either way if your characters join them, since only one model in the unit has to have the rule. It's just that the poor Tankbustas will fail mob rule on anything but a 1 as soon as they lose 3 models, which they will once the Trukk blows up. You also lose out on objective secured which is huge, and all you gain is a gimmicky chance for deep strike that barely works (if your HQ's don't get deep strike from the roll they can't join the troops that do).

Also, you can't use Gifts of Gork and Mork with Mogrok's Bossboyz, since the formation is part of Waaagh! Ghazghkull they have to use Orkimedes' Kustom Gubbinz.

How on earth, is a vehicle with a single facing of 14, but with the longest sides in history that are not ever able to be hit, considered an AV 14 vehicle? A landraider, is AV14, a monolith, is AV14, a Battlewagon is AV12 because that is the facing hit the majority of the time.

It's not top tier or anything but three wagons+two trukks (to cover the outside edges of the brick) is great against list tailoring fucks. (Don't forget to big up how many boyz you own while he's writing his list)

Daemoncurion seems kinda shit: The cores need a herald plus as many units as the number of the god, from a list of about half that God's daemons.

Yep. Is for all the lessers.

Worst off is probably Tzeentch, by splitting it into two formations:

Core: Horrors or Flamers

Auxilliary: Screamers or Chariots.

Both requiring 10 units, because the heralds are seperate and GW can't even count to the sacred numbers properly.

Would be very good as a single formation! 2 horrors, 2 chariots, MSU flamers and screamers.

But fuck, who's going to take that many horrors or flamers? For that matter, too many screamers or chariots to be practical either.

Let's see what that would look like.

9 units from the following list, one of which must be a Herald of Tzeentch or Exalted Flamer:

Screamers, Flamers, Horrors, Burning Chariots.

Benefits:

Herald may share locus with all units within 12".

+1 strength to all Tzeentch ranged weapons and psychic powers.

+1 slashing attack for Screamers.

Hmm... Strong. Not utterly broken though.

I had my sixth game yesterday against a Space Marine player who hadn't gotten any seventh edition games in so we were both really rocky about the rules. After we drew the game because we botched up everything so bad and my opponent left another player who was watching asked what edition we were playing. I told him seventh but he said the guy was playing fourth or fifth mostly.

So some of the botched rules I could use some clarification:

Tactical marines shouldn't be able to drop out of a pod and assault rright?

I can't jink in close combat, correct?

I can take an invulnerable (fnp) after a cover or armour save right?

I always let me opponent know I am jinking but they always tell me to make my jink rolls at different points. Do I do it after he rolls to hit or after to wound.

Do you still use the tactical objective cards for eternal war missions?
>>
>>45277953
I mean one of the necron players is running a fairly unconventional list with praetorians, a monolith and an obelisk. And Pajamapants has brought a different daemon list to every GT he's been at this year so you can hardly say it's exclusively people who "just play lists"
>>
>>45277993
Get the quick reference sheet
https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/4104995/Games/7edRef_V6.pdf

The ork codex is in the OP mega link, get that too

You have enough orks for a 500 point game, so look do to that and make sure you let your opponent know you're new before you play.

I suggest running the painboy, 30 man 'ard boys mob, painboy, a small grot unit and as many of the killa kans in seperate squads as you can fit.

>>45278061
>Tactical marines shouldn't be able to drop out of a pod and assault rright?
Only through a formation rule can they do this, if they weren't running a formation then they can't
>I can't jink in close combat, correct?
Is close combat a shooting attack?
>I can take an invulnerable (fnp) after a cover or armour save right?
You can only take 1 save ever, but you can take FNP provided the attack doesn't negate it
>I always let me opponent know I am jinking but they always tell me to make my jink rolls at different points. Do I do it after he rolls to hit or after to wound.
You jink to avoid pens and glances, but before results are rolled, otherwise it's just like taking a save, you roll it after being wounded
>Do you still use the tactical objective cards for eternal war missions?
Nope, but if you want to there's nothing stopping you
>>
So, Howling Banshees are listed as having Power Weapons, rather than Power Swords.

There are old Howling Banshees models that are equipped with axes instead.

Would a few of those put into a squad be useful? I'd imagine they'd function similarly to a powerfist or the like for similar units, being an Unweildly AP 2 weapon at higher strength.
>>
>>45275509
From a Daemon standpoint, you're gonna need Daemonettes and a Herald right off the bat because we don't yet have formations, so we still have to stick to Bound to keep Objective Secured. Soul Grinders are ALWAYS a plus, and Hellflayers are hilariously effective when they hit a soft target, especially since opponents typically have no idea how to handle them on the table.

Also, you'd be surprised at how effective Raptors are in a Slaanesh list.
>>
>>45278142
no, banshees have power swords.
>>
>>45278124
>You jink to avoid pens and glances,
My bikers don't get penned or glanced though.

My opponent was just using a CAD

>You can only take 1 save ever, but you can take FNP provided the attack doesn't negate it

This confused me a bit. So if my command squad jinks they can't FnP?

Another thing that messed me up was I took out a rhino turn one that was a dedicated transport for some tactical so I thought it was the same unit but I couldn't grenade launcher the carp out of when their box popped.
>>
>>45278319

Read the rules for feel no pain.
>>
Casual reminder Kaldor Draigo is insecure enough to hide behind three different invulnerable saves.
>>
>>45278319
FNP isn't a save.
Infantry can't junk unless they're on bikes
A squad and its transport are two different units.
>>
>>45278319
>This confused me a bit. So if my command squad jinks they can't FnP?
FNP isn't a save.

You can take one of cover/armour/invulnerable AND FnP.
>>
>>45278319
You get wounded, you make a save. Your best save. It can be armour, cover (inc. Jink) or invulnerable save. When this save fails, you can attempt to negate the wound caused with an FNP roll. If this succeeds, the wound is negated and it'll count as saved.

FNP is not a saving throw, it merely negates a wound and makes it count as saved for any rules purposes.
>>
>>45278319
>another thing that messed me up was I took out a rhino turn one that was a dedicated transport for some tactical
Squad and transport are two different units. They's why they can move separately, shoot separately, etc.

You choose to shoot the transport or the squad, not both.

Also - if they were one unit then the squad couldn't get onboard (because the whole unit must embark...)

What makes you say that? Modern detachment and formations are so flexible that running unbound, especially in a lower point game, is a mistake.

Variable game length makes it harder to schedule, but it also changes things tactically a lot because you don't know exactly when the game will end.

In general 40k scales down better than it scales up. Taking a ghostkeel or three at 2000 points is easy, but at 1000 points that ghost keel is a serious chunk of your army right there, so you had best be sure it is worth it.

RAI is more often that not, fucking obvious.

GW have stated time and time again that they write rules to be intuitive.

If someone comes at you with some unintuitive bullshit they can do, it is probably RAW, not RAI.

It's harder to tell what's intuitive when there's hundreds of neckbeards screaming different interpretations down every orifice.

Case in point with the WE chainaxes thing in 30k.

But then literally every WE players says "Nooo, silly anon, it means your units all get free chain axes :^)!"
