Strafing: Doomguy benefits from a 3+ cover save at all times.

Insane Speed: Doomguy has a movement speed of 12 inches, a charge range of 12 inches, and is Fleet of Foot.

Backpack: At the start of each turn, Doomguy may choose from one of the following weapons to use for that turn - Fists (Adds +1 to attacks), Chainsaw (Counts as Eviscerator with no change to initiative), Pistol (S4 AP5 Pistol 2 12”), Shotgun (S6 AP5 Assault 1 12”), Gatling Gun (S4 AP5 Assault 8 24”) Plasma Gun (S7 AP2 Assault 3 24”), Rocket launcher (S8 AP2 Heavy 1, Blast 48”), BFG (S10 AP1 Ordnance, Large Blast 48”)

RIP AND TEAR!: Once per game, Doomguy may perform RIP AND TEAR! When declared, Doomguy’s Weapon Skill, Strength, Toughness, Attacks and Initiative double (to a max of 10). He gains Preferred Enemy (Everything), Rage, his armor save becomes 2++, and his Fists become power weapons. He may only use his Fists. At the end of each of your turns, roll a D6. On the first turn of use, RIP AND TEAR! ends on a 5+. On the second turn it ends on a 4+. On the third, a 3+, on the fourth, a +2, and it ends automatically on the fifth turn. Additionally, Doomguy makes a consolidate move on 3d6 after destroying an enemy unit in assault. He may use this move to begin an assault with a new enemy unit as if he were charging them.

YOU’RE HUGE! THAT MEANS YOU HAVE HUGE GUTS!: Doomguy has Preferred Enemy: Monstrous Creatures. Additionally, any attacks he makes against them are considered to be AP2 or Power Weapon attacks. This rule also applies to Soulgrinders.

One Man Army: Doomguy counts as 1 HQ and 2 Troops.

the DOOM shotgun is probably the only long ranged shotgun in video games by far, you could kill demons halfway across the map with it without any real difficulty to it. Shotguns in DOOM were weird.

But, but, DOOM did codify a lot of those tropes. It set a bunch of standards of what to expect in a FPS for the better part of a decade before the FPS was even a genre of its own, everything after its release was just called a DOOM clone. Maybe the change came in when Half-Life showed up in 1998 and changed the genre again and shotguns in that game were less effective at a distance.

Strangely enough also made by Id Software. Either way Wolfenstein 3D didn't include multiplayer which has become a staple for practically any fps nowadays is expected to have. Also, it only had a knife,pistol, machine gun, and chaingun that DOOM expanded on with more guns that have become basics in most fps's today as well. Look, I'm not saying DOOM was the first fps, cause it's not, but it definitely left an impact upon its release.

Depending on the shotgun and the load, it's more like being shot simultaneously by anywhere from four to a dozen pistols.

More pellets is more holes which is more ouch.

Or you can load slug and relive the glory days of .75 caliber muskets

Maybe, I mean it boils down to a corporation accidentally opening a portal to hell on the moons of Mars while experimenting with teleportation technology. I'd argue no since Hell is a pretty well defined place as the warp really isn't and seems to change pretty frequently.

Wolfenstein and Doom have a very awkward relationship. Since Wolfenstein is older, but Doom surpassed Wolfenstein in absolutely every aspect... Except possibly "Number of Nazis killed"
Doom became the codifying ur-example of a FPS after it's release, to the point where the phrase "Doom Clone" was common parlance for FPS titles until, well, the Half-Life era.
And it deserves every ounce of praise. Doom was a game that needed to exist
