Your name is Vespillo Atius, and you are a gladiator.
The crowd roars to see your battle, your glory, and now, your death.

As you struggle for your breath while your lifeblood and strength drains from your wounds, the trident you carried lies on the ground before you.
But before you can scrable to reach it, a lance pierces your back again, tasking away what little fight you have left in you.
None of your body parts function, and you can seemingly only wait for death.

"You have fought well. But there can be only one champion."
His voice is more calm than you would expect of an executioner. The point leaves your back to be drawn back, and the crowd's cheer signals the final strike being raised.
A blinding flash of sound and pain knocks you awake.

It seems that your near-death experience was a dream, and you've been shunted awake by the rude sound of your jailer hammering his hand on the bars of your cell.
"Caelius, get the cleanup crew- the silent brat crapped out in his sleep."
Then he sees you awake, and he sneers, rolling his eyes. "Never mind, we just have a beauty sleeper here. Hope your arm's doing well."
It twinges in pain from the wound inflicted on it yesterday, but you can get up and move.

"Get to mess, now. We've got to train you so you don't go down so quickly next time. Three days until the next festival, don't waste it."
He waits for the other stragglers to come out as well, browbeating them more the slower they move.
Seems you have no choice.

As you go to mess, who are you looking for?

Deciding two allies to speak to- er, communicate with- is better than one, you make your way to the mess hall.
It's gruel, again, but this time it has some grease from meat stirred in.
You suspect that it was bought cheaply from a restaraunt vendor who didn't need it, or perhaps from the arena's own kitchens, sparse as they are.
Whatever it is and whereever it came from, it's slightly more enjoyable than yesterday's meal- not in the least because there is more there to eat.

You listen to two-swords talk, and the boy sits near you both.
"I'm not doing great, but I should be able to heal up enough during the break to be back in shape for the arena. Thanks for snuffing Mister Chubs back there."
The boy doesn't seem so interested in talking about violence. "What happens during the break? We're not going to fight anyone, are we?"
"Probably not anything more than sparring, thank the gods, but he's not just going to let us laze about." Two-swords frowns.
"People like HIM never do."

The jailer overhears this, and walks over to the table. "You got something to say? Wanna let the whole arena know who you're sodomizing?"
A couple of chuckles come from the other tables.
"No." Two-swords doesn't seem willing to pick a fight right now, and backs down, a bit scared.
"That's what I thought." Jailer walks away.

As soon as he gets out of earshot, Two-swords whispers to the two of you, "We've got to get out of here, and I've got a plan. You in?"
The boy shakes his head. "Are you crazy? It's too dangerous!"

>Let's hear the plan first.

As you continue eating, you think about the implications of such a plan.
One wrong step and everyone involved gets crucified- one rat and evertyhing falls apart.
But you'll be damned if you'll let this pass without at least a doublke check.
You wave your other hand to display you're listening.
Damn, this gruel is actually better than some of the food you make yourself.

Two-swords sets the scene with his hands, as if presenting a stage.
"The trainign area itself is well-guarded, but not perfectly. When the gate opens to let people in and out, it's a small run to the street. The jailer and some of the guards have its key."
He raises his index finger to mark an important point.
"Now, there are some guards, but not a lot- if, say, six of us were to rush them at once, they'd be overwhelmed. I count eight men alive."
Sighing a bit, he leaves it to you. "It's stupid and desperate, but it's a hell of a lot better than the arena."

The boy doesn't seem convinced, and continues eating, trying to distance himself from Two-swords.
Two-swords in turn looks to you, a little like a horse salesman not entirely sure of his own merchandise.
"We have three days to recruit the men to make it work. You with me?"

>Nah, that's crazy.
>No, I have a better plan.

You shake your head.
Two-swords nods emphatically.
You shake your head more slowly, to make the message clearer.
“Well, fine. You can do what you want. But I'll do what I need to.”
He stops talking the second Jailer walks back in, and begins eating, a bit miffed at your refusal.

After your meal, instead of being brought back to your cells, you are brought outside.
“You rats have three days to train.
Jailer throws some weapons on the ground, and more guards bring armor.
“You can train with weapons, just focus on the basics, or, if you impress me enough, I might teach you a trick to give you an edge. Gotta win a sparring match, though, which will be our third-day's 'class'.”

He leers at you all.
“Any questions, schoolboys? No? Good. Now get to it! We've got the best out here, shaping you pasty shits into something resembling a warrior. And if you can't be a warrior, I'll set you up with the 'refreshments' division- we always need more beast-fighters.”

Two-swords whispers to you, “I'll be watching the guard's movements if you change your mind. If you help me, things will go smoother.”
He moves away when Jailer goes for his belt and the sword in it.

It's not the weapon, it's the man, as they say, and you need to become the man.

You heave rocks, do sprints until your lungs seem ready to burst, fire bows, and tank hits from “the gauntlet”- you run between two lines of men and get your lights nearly punched out by every Joe Schmoe in the group that isn't running.
When you get to the end, you join the back of the line and lay into the others passing the same way.

With all of this hustling about and self-improvement going on, what exactly is improving?
Perhaps your aim has improved, or you draw the bow back farther. Your speed may be becoming greater, or your skin tougher.

You have three days of training to work with, followed by the sparring.
What part of yourself grows stronger on the first day?

>Any skill you train during the week gains a +1 temporary bonus, which stays until the next week.

Damn. That is very temporary.
>>
>>44974124
Any training days you take are permanent, so don't feel like if you don't spend them all in one place they'll be wasted.
It's sort of a tradeoff between now and later.
Train three different skills and gain the bonuses for all of them but no permanent advancements yet, or train one skill and reap both its advancement and bonus?
>>
>>44974052
>>44974091

You move faster, you can feel it.
Perhaps it's just your legs being freed from being cooped up in the cages, or perhaps the arena has actually made you quicker.
Whatever the cause, it doesn't matter at the moment. You feel swifter, can dodge faster.
The gauntlet is less dangerous to you now, as you slowly learn everyone else's punching styles.

After a hard day's training, Jailer looks at the sun setting and waves you all inside.
“Get in there, none of you are worth jack with a twisted ankle or a missing eye- well, maybe not the eye- we could pass you off as 'Patch'.”

You're almost incredulous as the food is meat and bread and some greens rather than gruel. It's tough, but you scarf it down as fast as you can. There's a little chatter in the mess, but nothing important, and you soon are retired to your cell and told to shut up for the night.

This time, your dreams are peaceful- but the morning is anything but.
You are awoken normally, and the mess is eerily quiet, but the large man who entered your conversation a few days ago suddenly breaks into a fight with a shorter, slightly more stocky man.
Some of the gladiators cheer them on, and one of the guards runs for the jailer.
“Go for the eyes!”
“Get him! Break his nose!”
Two-Swords comes to a realization, and looks at you with meaning. He prepares to sneak into the training yard.

Mmm.
No grease, but still good- for what amounts to a wheat slurry.
Two-swords slips outside to make his escape. You slip around the tables to take an extra share- they don't seem interested in it at the moment.
>You gain a +1 vigor bonus for the week for supplementing your diet with someone else's food. You bastard.
Wow, that fat guy is really laying into the taller one. Good thing you didn't get involved, he's fucking pissed.

But everything stops the second you hear someone being thrown into a stone wall from the direction of the training arena.
Jailer drags in Two-swords, throws him on the floor and steps over him to get to the men on the ground.
He, furious, is turning red to the point of radiating heat, and the cheering gladiators dissipate the second they see what's going on.
You instinctively put down your stolen food and step away from it, but thankfully Jailer doesn't notice.

The thick man stops before the taller man does, looking up in horror and leaving himself open for the tall man to nail him in the sucker.
This, in turn, causes the jailer to pick the tall man off of the ground and throw him into an empty table, eliciting winces and gasps from some of the others.
“Good news. I've found someone else to take my anger out on. Try that again, however, and you'll be taking his soon-to-be-vacant spot in the lion event.”

Two-swords is taken away by guards, screaming and fighting the whole way.
“No, NO! You BASTARDS, let me GO!”
>Two-swords has left the group.
Jailer looks over the group again. “Congratulations, class. You've all been gifted enviable seats to the Beast-fighting event. Perhaps you can woo a pretty girl while you're there.” He snarls and steps away.
“Training field in five minutes.”

You wield tridents, or, rather, you prefer them.
It would be a shame for you to be removed from what might become your signature gladiator weapon, but fear of such consequences is no excuse for not training.

>Each weapon is associated with two attributes: For a trident, it is Skill and Speed.
>For every level you take in a weapon, you gain a flat bonus for those two skills while wielding that weapon, up to a maximum of +5.
>If you are disarmed or wield a different weapon, you cannot benefit from this.
>Every level costs the current level +1 days of training: Since you were formally level 0, you gain a +1 bonus for one day of training.

You practice catching enemy weapons or stabbing dummies low, even sweeping people's legs out from under them.
At the end of the day, you feel like you have a firm grasp on the techniques used to be most effective with the three-pronged spear, especially after you get a tip from one of the trainers on grip and holding posture.

During dinner, the situation is nothing but somber silence. The boy constantly looks like he's about to cry.
But you can't afford to hesitate now, even in the face of such a bleak situation. You'll get out, by hook or crook. It's what Two-swords would want.

When you're sent back to your cells, the boy raps on the bars between you two.
“I know you don't like to talk- but can you listen?”
He seems saddened, like he was before, and scared. Not surprising- he is still just young enough to be a child.

Aw, hell, what's the harm.
You sit back and wait for him to spit it out. After he realizes you're listening, he talks.
“You know Two-Swords? I had a brother just like him. All smart and sneaky-like. We did a bunch of stuff that we weren't supposed to, because our family needed the money."

"But then, one day, something went wrong, and I saw him cut down by the legionaries. We were native Amuliuans, but once we got caught for stealing, he was killed and I was made a slave- an arena slave, at that.”
Boy curls into a ball. “I guess that's what they call justice? Though death for stealing what we need to live seems a bit much, don't you think?”
He seems to be dripping a few tears, but wipes them away as quickly as they come.

“Maybe Amuliua doesn't have any justice. And maybe I'll die here, maybe I'll have to fight you. But we'll find out the only way we can- don't let them hurt as any more than we have to, stick it out, fight to the end, right?”
Boy seems to have gained some courage. He'll likely stick with you if things get tough.
And maybe you can both get out of here, safe and sound- have some 'justice' of yourt own.

The next day is sparring.
Everyone is woken up early, and seem to be in higher spirits.
Grease in the gruel again. Maybe it's alternate days?

Once again, Jailer calls you all out to the field. He doesn't seem so mad at you anymore, though.
This is your final chance to train before the sparring matches- followed in turn by the arena event.

Well, gladiator?

You already have an eye out for tricks, making it harder for people to get the drop on you.
The teacher reviews some of your combat stances and tricks, mulling over what might be the best to teach you.

“Watch my position relative to yours. Don't let me get too close- that trident won't help you if I get within arm's length.”
Swiftly, you back up and step around him, finding a flaw in his armor and prodding him with the mock weapon.
“Good. You haven't mastered tripping yet, but it'll come. Focus on me- don't get distracted. For now, most of your matches will be one-on-one, so aim for that. We'll teach you more about fighting as a unit later.”

After about half an hour of tests, both of you take a break.
“Well, you certainly know separately how to aim, and strike with power.” He looks at your stance and grip again.
“But... I could teach you how to land blows with both precision and power- it would be quite a problem if the attack failed, but something like that could take down an enemy swiftly.”

“Or I could show you how to aim as if it were second nature, or put all your strength behind every strike. However, tricks like these are hard to master- you might forget one if you study another.”
He awaits your response.

As soon as he's gotten through teaching you how to strike precisely as a matter of nature, your teacher is called over by Jailer.
“Livus, bring your two over here. We're doing our sparring session.”

Most of the men are outfitted with swords and shields for the session, but Jailer hands you a net and trident- of course, the points aren't sharpened.
“You're going to be our Retiarius. That means you'll be fighting secutors,” he points to two of your group behind him, carrying blunted short swords and huge shields. “Guys like that. You two are gonna have to get along enough to not kill each other but hate each other enough to fight hard. Got it?”

Jailer calls out to the shorter of the two secutors. “Britches, get over here. You're going to be sparring with Loudmouth.”
Britches looks at you, and back at Jailer. “I thought the whole point of this was to fight WITHOUT killing people!” he laughs, before stepping up.
“Man, I hope you're tougher than you look- or else the arena's gonna eat you alive before the week's out.”

He takes a defensive stance, granting you initiative. “Let's see what you've got, little man!”
Clashing his shield and sword together, Britches waits on your move.

He tries to shift around one of your attacks, but when he does, his open side is slower than your weapon, catching him in the side. It doesn't leave much more than a red spot, but Britches notices it.
“Heh, we've got a live one. Guess I'm not going easy, then!”
His next strike is heavy, but you dart out from where it would have landed and replant your feet. The secutor steps back and interposes his shield between you two.

Jailer seems to be impressed. “Good. Britches, remember that you've got to land your hits- he's faster than you, and you can't afford to let him wear you down. Don't be afraid to use your shield as a weapon. Loudmouth, keep him away from you- he's got better armor than you, and if he disarms you, you're as good as done.”

“Right.” Britches seems to refocus under his face-concealing helmet, and looks you over, waiting for an opening.
You've got him at the point of your trident, yourself trying to figure out where he's going to move next.
You also have the speed advantage, and massively- if he misses his next attack, you might get to make two attacks instead of one.

Despite your speed advantage, Britches actually manages to catch you off-guard with a well-aimed attack.
It glances off of your trident arm, too weak to draw blood even if it was sharp, but it's obvious that he actually knows what he's doing despite appearances. A musclehead he is not.

“Close. Britches, that was a great strike. Loudmouth, that was a close call. Try not to have any more.”
Some of the other gladiators are looking the fight between you over. You seem to be the only Retiarius, as of now.
there is at least one other Secutor besides Britches.

“Come on, Loudmouth, are you fighting or not?” your opponent steps forward again, pushing you back a bit and forcing you to circle. You two should switch nicknames, you think.

Boy is watching from the sidelines. He's carrying a smaller sword and buckler in the same hand.
Giving you a nod, he motions for you to focus again.
You still have a huge time advantage, and you're gaining even further. It might be time to cash such a bonus in.

Britches steps forward, and in that instant, you cast your net.
It hooks over his helmet and his whole sword arm, and your heart leaps as the Secutor finds his swing pulls on his neck uncomfortably.

Jailer smirks. “Every Retiarius' bread and butter. I was wondering if you were going to use it.” He barks at Britches. “You'll need to stay calm and get out of the net without getting caught up any further. It's hard, but you can do it if you focus- and don't get hurt any further.”

Britches backs up, preparing to use his shield as a bludgeoning weapon, and drops his sword. He seems to be thinking this through.
However, he'll be caught up in the net for a while, and won't be able to attack you.

Feint a sweeping attack at his legs but then knock his sword away instead with the trident.
>>

He's already dropped his sword.
>>
>>44978953
I know. Knock it further away.
>>
>>44979016
Oh, I thought you meant knock it out of his hand.

With his lowered mobility, you move around him enough to poke at his legs, landing a solid shot to the legs, but a second jab is blocked by his shield. In the hustle, you manage to knock his sword farther away from him, forcing him to rely entirely on his shield.

Britches is still struggling to get out of the net, and he's not having much luck with it.
You would have free run of the situation, if that damn shield wasn't there.
He lashes out with it, but you easily step aside and continue your assault.

Jailer is getting a bit weary of watching. “Come on, you two, hurry it up. Get out of there, Britches, unless you want Loudmouth to slowly poke you to victory. The whole point of it is putting on a show.”

Britches himself seems to be getting fairly frustrated with the situation, but his limited movement isn't giving him much chance to change the tide.
A couple of shots to the leg should put him on the ground, or one really good hit.

Britches is still unable to break the net, and another well-placed attack bruises his legs visibly. He stumbles forward with his shield, shoving but not harming you.
Most of your jabs, however, are ineffectual. This bastard refuses to give up, even when obviously cornered.

He'll make a good sparring partner, at least.
The good news is that even he can't take much more of this. He's slowed further, but his armor and toughness makes your less powerful strikes harder to do enough damage for him to really feel it.

Eventually, Jailer simply gives up with it.
“Enough. This has gone on for too long. Britches, you need to learn how to get outta those nets- and YOU-” he points at you “need to put some muscle behind that trident. I don't know whether it's freak luck or what- your pin-pricking style might work in the arena, but it's hardly good entertainment.”

Jailer gets up in your face. “I want you to put on a better show for them than you did for me- and don't worry about Britches, it'll be some unlucky SOB from the other side of the arena.”

He pulls the net off of Britches and throws it to the equipment keeper, who takes your armor and weapons. “Get back in your cells. We'll give you all a nice wash-up tomorrow, so you look good dying to the ladies. Anything bleeding, go whine to someone else.”

At that, your master claps his hands and calls up the next pair. “Hammer! Miner! Get up here- you've stood around long enough!”
As Britches leaves, you can see that he's the sort of man that they could put on a poster. He rubs his legs and gives you a thumbs up.
"Pretty good, Loudmouth. See you in training."

As he walks away, you wonder if you really will.

That was a bit of an unusual end.
Any questions?
>One good hit needed
>Basically none of your strikes did damage, even though they hit
But why, dice?
And speaking of which, I have a question for you all.
Would you prefer that I keep rolling in secret for you, or that I list the roll (there would be two in almost every combat action) and you roll for it?
>>
>>44979701
us rolling is typically the norm
>>
>>44979701
I enjoy rolling but having you roll is quicker. Your call boss.

I set it as a silent rolling system to prevent people from jumping ship when they see a good roll, so the tension stays up, but I could easily adjust the system to accommodate for such things.
I'll post on Twitter if I decide to adjust the system, and how.
It would probably switch to a roll-under system on d20, with ties coming down to the higher base skill, or a reroll if there's a further match.
