fun decks that need help and should have gotten some unbans edition
Don't be dumb, I just picked 2 cards out of 2 hypothetical good mdoern storm/dredge decks which currently don't exist and asked for unbans like rituals, cantrips, dread return or reprints like cabal therapy.
>WoTC wants to make a black Eldrazi deck see modern play
>ban Twin to make sure its played
Good to see Wizards going full Konami and using their Ban list to push new cards rather than fix formats.
I thought this was an interesting thing to bring up; Hallowed Fountains are lowest they've been since the reprint.
Based on the guys having a conversation about Chapin style Grixis control overwhelming both the newer grindier control build or Kiki replacing Twin I ask, why not both?
Don't know if this is the right place, but considering the public I think it is
my collection just went over the 1k card milestone, and i don't have enough stamina/money to sleeve/box all of the cards
how do I protect them then? Are silica bags good? how about contact with wood? Do I need to make sure the space will be dry and dark? how about average temperature?
Put expensive cards in sleeves in binders. Whatever isn't in a deck that isn't expensive goes in a cardboard card box, sorted first by set then by WUBRG then by alphabetical order.
If the number of loose singles you own exceed the size of approximately three fatpack boxes, you have too many. Cull them. Having a large trade binder isn't cool; donate the chaff to someone or the store and only keep the good shit around.
Unsleeved cards don't do well against wood. You don't need silica unless you live in a humid place and if you decide to use them you should make sure the box is sealed so they don't need to be replaced. My cube has sat in a case with silica gel bags and they haven't "worn out" in years.
I see no point in having a large collection in loose cards. The majority of one's collection should be in a deck. I'm not impressed by people's huge binders of mostly-crap, often it tells me they don't care enough to be organized.
I use a converted briefcase to carry all my singles. My random supplies like sleeves and loose packs I put into a shoebox, decks go into another shoebox, which I pick two or three out and carry around in what is essentially a purse with a shoulder strap.
I have a hard limit on the number of singles I own to prevent myself from hoarding, which I am prone to do. The briefcase is always 100% full, if a format staple needs to go into it, it means something has to go. I never have more than around 50 cards for trade at any given time and they're all worth around $7 or more; I don't waste my time with piddly shit that even EDH players don't want.
All in all, the whole shebang can fit into a milk crate.
>To be honest I'm just so afraid of giving up my cards that I end up behaving as a hoarder
separate your cards into these simple categories
go down the list from the top and when you reach the dividing line, follow the instructions there.
>ancient nostalgia cards (ABU, etc.)
-----------------------------(sell to lgs)
What would make tier 3 decks viable, /tg/?
Gideon based 2cmc anthem giving Tokens +1/+1 and indestructible
True Name Nemesis printed in a standard set.
>death and Taxes
Not that any of these would be a good idea, imagine Merfolk with TNN or Abzan with SFM
Any other decks, suggestions?
beast within works, along with aggressively mulliganing to get a spirit guide + combo piece to get a turn 2 Balance. I own both decks and have been running them against each other and it's a pretty tough matchup for infect, not 100% unwinnable for it but it's hard
It doesnt deny mana, you can still cheat things in and you eventually run out of gas
Some decks will just entirely go around you.
Legacy DnT has Wasteland and Port that dont just make it difficult, but impossible for your opponent to play magic
I'm thinking of Call the Gatewatch in Balance Superfriends and maybe Painful Truths because the deck is 5c anyway and it's a strong card draw engine. I also pulled a Gideon and tried it out and it's pretty great as a finisher, defs keeping it in
Except Bloom Tender, what's some cheap combos with this card?
After playing standard for one year I was thinking of making a Modern deck, Zoo. I have some questions.
Is the deck playable (as competitive playable) right now against the rest of the meta?
What are the decks worst/best matchups?
I can afford nearly all the deck except for Arid Mesas and Tarmogoyfs, are there any viable replacements?
In return, my thanks and this burrito rabbit.
What's the list you're using? If they aren't playing any other delve cards, I like Hooting Mandrills as a budget replacement. Obviously not nearly as good for the fast explosive starts Zoo normally has, but still good. Otherwise just more burn probably. Or you can try shoving Collected Company in there.
Anyway it's probably going to get fucked for a little bit now that Tron players are all going to be trying out their shiny new Kozilek's Return sideboard toy before they decide whether it's actually good or not. Pretty sure Affinity and straight Burn are just faster right than Zoo right now, but its time will come around eventually.
3 Restore Balance
4 Violent Outburst
4 Ardent Plea
4 Greater Gargadon
1 Riftwing Cloudskate
1 Gideon, Ally of Zendikar
1 Garruk Relentless
1 Kiora the Crashing Wave
2 Jace, Architect of Thought
1 Beast Within
1 Utter End
4 Simian Spirit Guide
4 Wildfield Borderpost
4 Wildfire Borderpost
4 Fieldmist Borderpost
2 Veinfire Borderpost
2 Mistvein Borderpost
2 Flooded Strand
1 Steam Vents
4 Terramorphic Expanse
I have 3 flex spots in that last, currently filling them are 2 Nihilith and 1 Riftwing Cloudskate. Probably going to remove the Garruk, Kiora is decent against Tron because it can stop their creatures and it gives some card draw. I don't really want to get rid of much more removal but maybe I should do that and just run removal in sideboard.
without goyf Zoo can either go burn-ish (that's gruul zoo), or it can go combo-ish (that's Knightfall) or it can go hatebears-ish (scooze, voice, and pridemage), which direction do you want to go?
How about this burrito then?
>zoo is bad
I see. This is the deal, like I said Im just a Standard player and I have been playing for a year.
Since Khans will rotate out in April, I was thinking about selling my Abzan deck right now to cash the fetchs and everything else while it holds value.
However I could also keep the fetchs and start building a Modern deck, but nothing too expensive either since I don't have that kind of income right now.
Since my favorite colours are Green and White and I like nature themes, I figured Zoo would go fine with me, but I don't want to build the deck either if it's not competitive enough like you guys say, because I like to go to GPs or big cash tournaments and what not.
This was the Zoo list I saw: http://mtgtop8.com/event?e=11234&d=263815&f=MO
Or should I just build Modern Abzan?
To be honest Im not that smart, so the easiest more effective playstyle would be my choise.
if you were running azban aggro, then you don't want to play modern azban, its a grindy value deck. Zoo aggro is going to be where you want. Aggro zoo runs the naya colors, you keep your fetches and have the naya shocks. Take a look at these two lists:
zoo was quite bad until nacatl was unbanned and coco was printed.in that first list, go ahead and sub in birds instead of hierarch and Voice instead of goyf for budget alternatives.
Thanks, also I don't mind playing grindy decks at all, is not like I could kill anyone before turn 10 or so (more or less, you get the idea) with Abzan Aggro on standard right now.
look at what card just went up in price
figure out that the card goes in deck A
Deck B is good against Deck A
Buy cards from Deck B
Repeat with decks C,D, etc. and eventually look back to Deck A
I feel very confident that someone will be able to top 8 if not top 16 with Ascendancy in a major now that Twin and by extension, BGx is gone
I just wanna play Grixis Durdle forever and ever, but I've missed on the low prices of most stuff I'd need.
Ive played against that deck before, you run 4 Delver of Secrets, 4 Disrupting shoal, vendillion clique, etc
Heres a deck list, you can also run ninja bear Delver, same except for a few creatures
Basically it is the tempo-iest tempo deck ever. This is not a deck you play if you want friends, or are bad
The only thing which may swing for Tron is how good the new mythic slagstorm thing is.
I actually expect Boggles to make a huge comeback. Ive never played it and have no idea what their infect matchup is but if its even 50/50 it seems very well positioned.
Infect got better by a lot with the best deck in the format being its free win deck, but struggles a bit against some of the other aggro decks, yet makes up for it by beating the other combo decks. Bogles had something like an 85% game 1 win rate with Twin in, I can only imagine how much more popular it's going to be now. Which is fine actually because I like Bogles, it's really simple and autopilot and fun if you're just chilling or playing drunk.
No legacy thread
I play Canadian Threshold. If someone plays cabal therapy, is it correct to counter it or force of will it if I absolutely have to, assuming that I have a Delver down? Or would there be a better card for them to name
>bought into modern eldrazi early and tried to go sultai
>inconsistant results, chalked eldrazi up to being a fad and sold cards
>eldrazi shit is now 3x the price i bought them for
Nope, you have to turn on Faerie Conclave and enchant it on the same turn and leave faeire conclave untapped. Freed from the Real falls off once Faerie Conclave is no longer a creature.
Therapy usually means combo, and they're probably going to name force if it's blind and game 1. If you only have blue card + FoW then don't bother. If you have blue card + FoW + another counter, it's probably worth it.
It really depends on what you're gripping. Cabal Therapy is one of the most skill intensive cards in mtg and I'm shit at legacy so here read an article or something I just googled
Shieeet, thanks for the heads up dude
Just play shocks in place of true duals, lots of people do it
Or get fakes, especially if youre only playing at Pptq or Fnm level. Im slowly acquiring the cards for my thresh deck, people cant tell the difference between the proxied cards and the real ones
anyone else just not care about non-legacy formats anymore?
like i'm on straight red deck for modern and standard now because i'm not interested in any of the meta decks. fuck-you, sideways redguys and GET 'EM.
I primarily play Legacy because they dont kill a deck solely for "muh meta variety", and standard is full of retards who play shitty decks
I refuse to play against a standard deck that has no win condition except a 2/2, 4 of every counterspell in standard, and about 20 silkwrap style cards
Gonna actually play SFV when it drops since Tekken is nowhere in sight for home console yet.
Right now I'm also playing/learning KI again and debating on getting back into 50/50 X
(Mortal Kombat X)
I dig legacy but I only get to play like once a month which blows. I really wish they had weeklies.
I'll probably get SFV then drop it after a week and go back to shitty anime games and kof98.
>a 2/2, 4 of every counterspell in standard, and about 20 silkwrap style cards
>add fork for de ebin fun
>mfw finishing shitters with fork+fireblast at turn 3
>look into playing modern burn
>there's no price, fireblast
>most of your spells are 2 mana, some only deal 3 damage despite this
i'll stick to U/R storm, thanks
modern is a shit format
Or just trade cards until you have a deck. This whole "I sold my deck" business is nonsense, you lose way less if you just trade intelligently. The only thing I actually had to buy for ANT was the LEDs.
1 Bojuka Bog
4 Eldrazi Temple
3 Eye of Ugin
2 Ghost Quarter
2 Godless Shrine
4 Marsh Flats
2 Shambling Vent
2 Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth
4 Blight Herder
4 Oblivion Sower
1 Ulamog, the Ceaseless Hunger
4 Wasteland Strangler
4 Inquisition of Kozilek
4 Lingering Souls
3 Expedition Map
4 Relic of Progenitus
1 Slaughter Pact
4 Path to Exile
1 All Is Dust
2 Celestial Purge
3 Rest for the Weary
2 Stony Silence
That feel when still loses to burn.
Standard being shit is overflowing into modern being shit.
Pretty much sums up my thoughts on the subject and anything I type out here would just be quoting honestly
The Modern price spike is confusing me to no degree.
I am seeing tons of people in quite a lot of big groups Im currently in cashing out on modern and either flat out quitting/taking a break or buying into legacy.
The little I have seen of the Heartless Eldrazi deck made it look very airy, for lack of a better word. There simply seemed to be too many ways to make the Eldrazi cheap and not at all enough threats. The lists I have seen without the Summonings have appeared much scarier.
Screen shot for posterity
So if you pump your creature in response to Exile it doesn't work correct?
>since it doesn't check the power/toughness after targeting
It does. All targetting spells check requirements upon resolution. It's just that spells that are worded like Warping Wail also check them when declaring the targets. A card like Pyroblast, however, only checks them on resolution, it still allows you target any spell or permanent when declaring that you cast it regardless of its color.
I have a playset of bloodcleave cliffs that I don't use.
Should I trade them for fetches with red for my burn deck or keep them?
>Standard is full of Abzan
>Modern banned a gatekeeper deck to let all the midrange and combo in
>Pauper had a card banned that I had just picked up the other day
>Commander nerfed every combo deck that exists and made it useless to try and run something that isn't on a curve
>Running proxies in Legacy is illegal now
Its like Wizards wants me to sell my house to get into Vintage.
I was told to not run serum visions in this. What do you think?
>affinity autist sacs all of his shit to ravager
>sacs Ravager and puts counters on an Ornithopter
>his face when I whip out my World Breaker
I've had this happen, but with something like Inkmoth.
>"Okay, I sac everything to my Ravager, and then I sac my Ravager to put 10+ counters on Inkmoth"
>"Okay in response I bolt your Inkmoth"
Why are Affinity players so retarded?
a guy that untaps a land, and ravnica simic bounce land = infinite green mana for instance
I fucking love that Ad Nauseam is an instant win deck. Tap out for a Lightning Bolt to swing with Swiftspear for win? Grace+Nauseam. Three Pact triggers on the stack? Grace+Nauseam. Wurmcoil beats coming down? Grace+Nauseam.
>built memerazi before the spike
Still, these spikes are ridiculous for an effective tier 2 deck that's going to be hated on. The spike for heartless summoning makes no aense and os completely unproven.
I guess it didn't happen then because I don't post pictures. Sorry bud, just letting you know that the hands can lie. You should pay more attention to shoulders, finger ratios and the rib cage. That's all the tranny spotting advice I'll dispense though.
Sometimes this is the right play, but you shouldn't sperg out when you lose like this. I had a dude at a pptq cry and go "urruurrrg i got no permanents!" when I cast Volc Fallout in response to him putting the counters on Inkmoth. He was super salty.
yfw swiftspear was still alive
But why yes!
Remember: Wear your dredge pride, world wide as a badge of pride!
I see you're not up to date on the situation. Stores can hold unsanctioned events that allow proxies.
Go for it, I've been playing Storm at FNM's for a while and I've noticed almost no decks have hate for it in the sb, the worst thing I've come across is RiP and Chord for Eidion of Rhetoric.
What's the best configuration for burn going into the the new metagame: Naya or RW? I feel like with all of the aggressive decks everyone seems to think are going to be popular that I should be RW in order to have a less painful manabase and have access to maindeck lightning helixes. I've never been a huge fan of command though, so I feel like this might be personal bias getting in the way of playing the objectively best build for the meta. Also, 1x mainboard deflecting palm; super secret tech, or pure jank?
I played straight Boros burn for a long time. When I made the switch over to Naya with cats I noticed myself winning far more. Nacatl is just so explosive and it fixes the problem with running out of gas.
It's up to you I had the same exact opinion as you. I love them now even though I absolutely hate the art, I couldn't ever dream of running without them. Imagine a two Nacatl and one guide hand. It absolutely demands an answer from your opponent because with out one you can threaten lethal on turn three. It helps slow your opponents gameplan down.
At lot of people at my LGS netdeck, so its was full of Tron, Affinity,
Twin, and Bloom.
Like, Its nice to know turn three is a little safer, but a single Karn activation could cause trouble, and infect will kill me turn 1 if I don't have a Tim Allen in hand. But with Twin and Prime time gone now, should I go give it another shot? or should I go looking for another store.
Anon, right now there IS no viable midrange deck in Modern that isn't BGx. Tier 1 has and may continue to have BGr, and Tier 2 has BGw. Goyf, Decay, and discard effects are literally too good to pass up at the competitive level.
Mardu is too focused on using spot removal on creatures, and lacks the heavy hitters you get by including green. Jeskai relies too heavily on badly-gimped countermagic and ALSO misses out on the heavy hitters in green.
>mfw people insisted that Deflecting Palm was a shit card that would never see play
>mfw people at my LGS get salty whenever I blow them out with a card they still insist is shit
I'm building Naya Burn, but don't really have much of the manabase right now. I can definitely pick up the foundries and 2 more foothills (already have a pair). Probably can get mires as well, but tarns and mesas are a bit expensive right now. Is there anything else I should be looking at in the interim to flush my manabase out while I gradually pick up the ZEN fetches?
>mfw I was one of those people who thought it was a shit card
>mfw I lost track of how many different decks get shit on by resolving DP
>mfw it's going to be one of my favorite guilty pleasure cards
Ehh my mardu list is completely viable it's just not great. Abbot of keral keep works as a pseudo goyf in half the games as long as your dropping a spell before combat. Also you randomly get to blow people out with bolt spam + prowess. Not to mention abbot + free card into play lategame. Also you get the free perk of destroying Jund because of souls, path, and free cards from abbot
Well it technically can prevent Etched Champion from being a viable damage carrier since Deflecting Palm doesn't target.
But you still have to outplay Affinity's ability to shuffle damage and disregard blocks as it sees fit.
>Mfw it does next to nothing against storm
It does nothing to Lantern Control either. That's one of the benefits of playing niche decks. People have plenty of dead cards against you game 1.
I am a little scared about all the artifact hate will have at the ready because of Affinity however, but I suspect I will just mill it away anyaway.
I'm this anon (>>44897581)
So you're all basically confirming that maindeck palm isn't jank right? I figure it's good against any of the top decks, and worst case scenario you target a bolt or something and it's basically just a lightning helix.
Burn still rekts storm because of eidolon. sorry fag.
My current build if I put a singleton palm in the main puts me at:
4 charms main
3 helixes main
1 helix sided
1 palm main
2 palms sided
The thought of palming against infect game 1, or blowing out a searing blaze in the mirror is just too good to pass up.
On second thought, palm doesn't interact with blaze how I thought it did, and gets blown out by skullcrack. It also seems mediocre against affinity if they have ravager out. I guess 2 in the side is enough for the relevant matchups.
Guys I kind of want to build 5 color humans. Please remind me why that's a shitty idea.
The way I see it, you could Deflecting Palm choosing Ravager so long as they don't have Etched Champ out, and that forces them into questionable play mode as they shuffle the damage elsewhere.
The right play would be to board in artifact hate first and foremost but I think a skilled player can Palm for incredible value if they outthink the Affinity pilot. But that requires being able to outthink a flowing river of damage.
Not enough functional reprints of Champion of the Parish.
what about wilt-leaf abzan? it's a little bit more aggressive and cheaper than the "classic" modern abzan
you could try to run a version with just 4 birds instead of 6 dorks to lower the costs.
you can also try ti make a version without voice of resurgence if they're extending your budget

I might run Kor Firewalkers in the side if burn picks up steam. I'm really scared of impending tron dominance.
Because it's actually pretty good. I had the exact opinion you guys have now until I tested it out. It's not just a bolt for G. Its a bolt that's going to keep on hitting every turn until your opponent removes it which slows his gameplan down and it gets pumped by Command.
Considering fitting this nigga into my Sanguine Bond deck
I run this guy as a one of in Eldrazi.
Beating in for 7 with annihilator is no joke. And his 20 ability ends games on the spot. Slap down Emrakul, Kozilek, and Newlamog.
That color identity fits with the sand niggers too.
Red for their chaotic nature, beheadings, goat fucking
Black for their mistreatment of humans, pedophile worship etc
White for their false sense of justice
I had the opposite opinion, tested it out and found it often to be a dead draw, also forced me to take more damage from shocklands and forced me to fetch for stomping ground ASAP. Worst case scenario is having a decent hand with a nacatl and two mountains or something similar.
Well that's alright. I noticed myself winning more often with the card. I'd honestly rather go Boros just because I like the flavor and I hate Nacatls art but I can't pass up the higher win percentage.
One day theyll print a good R/W creature and then I'll take the cat out.
The affinity matchup isn't too bad. Every once in awhile they get away from me, but that deck is so anti aggro already...
Might work against tron. I may also just have to concede that this deck blows against tron. They have waaay more inevitability than I could ever hope to muster and short of soaring ahead of them and cycling ghost quarters with sun titan over and over, the matchup is piss poor.
I do need to think of something to combat tron though
If I resolve/flicker 2 missionary triggers I basically win vs burn. Their guides, nacatls, etc just run into my wall of omens or trade with missionaries. I 100% think Firewalker is a better SB card.
Magic, despite being over 20 years old, as undergone a bunch of growtg the past few years. Now WotC is going to milk this cow for every shekel they can get. Once profits start going down they might more strides at listening to the community.
Yes it is. "Team Italia" was the old name for a deck in those colors, and prior to Mardu being a name the wedge was either known as Dega or Italia.
When I'm in Japan next I'll have to snap a few up, they're cheaper there because there's less demand for them. Plus, you know, foreign language shit.
Three or four, I'd imagine?
