That assumes enemies will speak your language or translate the name into their language, have no way to identify a ship besides writing, want to know the name of a ship before knowing whether it's hostile, and won't start a sentence with "the name of the ship is..." to avoid confusion.

UTC Last Hope, a custom built flagship with an FTL engine large enough to tug the rest of the fleet 20,000 light years when their engines can only jump a few thousand, so they could sneak attack the rebel capital world.

It was designed to need the crew transport ships it tugs, so one metric of crew size is 10,000,000; the size of the occupation forces sent to occupy the planet(s orbital centers). If you were to excise the rest of the ships, only 50,000 people could survive on the ship.

"Memento Mori", ex "Cooking Pot". Name changed after the last crew died due to the oxygen leak and the ship returned to it's destination with a dead crew on board.
># Crew?
3 People. Can be operated to full capacity by one.
>Primary function?
Technical mobile repair platform, purposed for small unmanned Solar-centeric stations. Later re-purposed for repairing mining facilities in Koiper Asteroid Field, and then got a small smooth-bore cannon striped to it rather crudely.
>Gross register tonnage?
200 tonns. Relatively small ship.

Terran Commonwealth Ship "Guardian"

>Capable of autonomous operation. Habitat ring and acceleration tanks for 120 crew.
>Fast battleship.
>90,000 tonne mass dry weight. 140,000 tonne with fuel tanks and magazines loaded

Like others of the Sui Riu class, this ship is in most ways a three hundred meter railgun with engines attached. Massive radiators and coolant tanks struggle to keep up with the tremendous thermal output of these warships, but otherwise they are very effective for ships that entered service in 2097.

While capable of 60 meters per second squared acceleration at full output doing so quickly exhaust the ship's reserve of hydrogen reaction mass. Under non-combat conditions a more modest .05 meter per second squared acceleration is available from quantum vacuum plasma thrusters.

Beside the relativistic railgun, the ship has defensive high agility guided missiles and a thirty megawatt free electron laser system.

The Martian and the Expanse are some of the most impressively down to earth mainstream scifi I've seen in years.

> No faster than light
> No space-air resistance
> No artificial gravity
> No infinitely fast communication

Hell, NASA helped significantly with The Martian, and even screened it aboard the ISS.

People can learn while being entertained, it's the writers jobs to blend the two seamlessly, which is what they have started to understand how to do lately.

Unity, Unity-class mothership.
Skeleton crew of 300, to keep ONLY the engines and propulsions functioning, 500 for weapons, and shield manipulation (only barely). 1000 For running carrier capabilities(fighter-size only), and 1500 for function of smaller warship refit. Maximum passenger of 30000 men, in which it includes scientists.
Primary function is either fleet command, spearheading exploration fleets, pullinf fleets around that needs assistance in jumping, or deploying as a mobile base of operations/emergency factory. Also finally an insurance for a world-ending disaster(explining the standard yet large installment of manufacturing and laboratory housed within, which is same for all the other ships of it's class)
around 30000 tonns, without ordinance loaded or manufacturing active.

RCSV Wayward Son, formerly RCSV Kansas

Thirty is optimal, currently running at seven due to damage to reactor during hostile engagement.

Original build designation is mining and geosurveying, but as per form WS5227-ez, we've filed to be reclassified as a class C-8 exoplanetary survey and exploration vessel.

Uhh...not sur u ie e @ ide. Captain Vargas was in charge of that sort of thing and I'd love to pick his brain for you, but most of it is getting microwaved down on C deck. She's pretty damn big, though.
